HORTICULTURE SCENARIO IN THENI DISTRICT
"he present day trend indicates that in order to enerate ma%imum income from aricultural operations&
there is a rowin tendency amon the farmers to shift from traditional food crops like paddy& cholam& 'aize etc. to
horticulture crops like !eetables& banana& flowers and spices in "()*I District.
"he total fallow land in the district stood as 34962.385 ha. as stated below+

distributed to farmers. $ubsidy amount of ?s //&-..E0 was released for Drip Irriation system establishment besides
-3&3..E0 released from 'icro Irriation scheme. $o total subsidy for layin drip irriation was ?s 5.&...E0 per hectare for
the beneficiaries of this scheme. Durin -./.0//& under this scheme 4. (a was co!ered. water soluble fertilizer worth of
?s /6...Eha was distributed to the beneficiaries besides subsidy amount of ?s 6...Eha towards cost of seeds was also
released to the farmers. For installation of drip irriation& the subsidy of ?s //-.. per ha from this scheme besides

"he scheme was implemented by the 7entral Go!ernment with aim to Introduce hybrid !eetable culti!ation to
et hiher yield and profit by adoptin latest technoloists. Ander this durin -.//0/- for <rin>al& <hendi and other
!eetables like "omoto& <eans etc. ?s.86..E0 per ha subsidy was i!en for /.. ha. and for hill !eetables like
cabbae& cauliflower and chillies the subsidy was i!en ?s./-6..E0 per ha. for 16 ha. For construction of pandal and
culti!ation of pandal !eetables ?s./664..E0 was i!en as subsidy for 6 ha.
Durin this year -./-0/1 it was co!ered to 56 ha. under <rin>al and /6 ha. under <hendi and -. ha. for other
!eetables at the rate of ?s.86..E0 subsidy per ha. For hill !eetables it was co!ered to -. ha. and for chillies it was /.
ha. at the rate of ?s./-6..E0 subsidy per ha. A special task was i!en to pandal !eetable culti!ation area e%pansion of
5. ha. for small and marinal farmers with the subsidy of ?s./664..E0 per ha. For this ?s.:.36 lakhs was allotted to
co!er //- ha. of hybrid !eetables culti!ation.

In order to enhance the #andal !eetable culti!ation& (ybrid #andal !eetable seeds and pandal
structures are i!en at 6. B subsidy. Durin -./-0/1 under *AD# $cheme *ew #andal ;eatable 7ulti!ation was
introduced with a $ubsidy of ?s. /.6=akhs E(a for the establishment of *ew #andal $tructure. In this -4 (ec was
achie!ed. <ut durin /10/5 year the subsidy is increased to -...=akhsE (a for erectin pandal structures and seeds./5
(a was achie!ed with ?s -3 lakhs of financial outlay.
RAIN;ED AREA DE8ELO+,ENT +RO7RA,,E
"he $cheme was introduced from -./-0/1 in "heni District. In this scheme& (orticulture based farmin system is
de!eloped by plantin 'ano crop with pulses crop as intercrop. For de!elopin this farmin system& 6.B subsidy of ?s
-6... per (a is pro!ided in which fertilizers& #lant protection chemicals are supplied to farmers Durin -./-0/1.
'ano& =ime and 'orina 7rops were co!ered for an area of /6. (ectares with a finance of 18.6 =akhs. Durin -./10
/5. It was #roposed to co!er 3. (ectares with an outlay of -. =akhs in "heni District. "he $ubsidy is ?s.-6&... per
(ectares.
It was also proposed to form 6 nos of farm ponds in the farmers fields with an outlay of "hree lakhs. $pecial
7omponents like reno!ation of old bore wells at the rate of ?s.5... per <ore well& Installation of new electric motors at
the rate of ?s./.&... per motor& layin of pipe lines for water con!eyance at the ?ate of /.... per (ectares are also
under implementation in "heni District. #ermanent ;ermicompost structure with the subsidy of 1.... per unit was also
to be implemented in "heni district under ?AD#. Ander ?AD# $cheme the !arious components can be i!en to /
beneficiary with ma%imum limitation of ?s./ =akh per beneficiary. A total sum of ?s.16.6 =akhs is sanctioned for "heni
District Durin -./10/5. Due to se!ere drouht pre!ailed durin the year -./10/5 it was not able to achie!e.

Go!ernment of india has introduced the *ational (orticulture 'ission. In "heni District& (orticulture
7rops& =ike 'ano& Amla& Grapes& 7ashew& 7ocoa& =oose Flowers are the ma>or focus crop under this scheme. "he
$cheme has been implemented from the year -..40.8. For area e%pansion prorammes of 'ano& #apaya& Acid lime&
Gua!a& 7ocoa $pices & Flowers 6.B to 86B subsidy is bein pro!ided to the farmers. Ander 9ranic farmin& for
establishment of !ermi 7ompost units& !ermi beds & #ollination support throuh <ee keepin 6.B subsidy is pro!ided.

A centrally sponsored scheme on 'icro Irriation was introduced in @anuary -..4 to increase the area under
impro!ed methods of irriation for better water use efficiency. $ubsidy amount was pro!ided by both central and $tate
Go!ernment. "he 7entral Go!ernment i!es 6.B subsidy to small and marinal farmers and 5.B to other farmers. In
addition the "amil*adu Go!ernment i!eDs 6.B subsidy for small and marinal farmers and 16B $ubsidy for other
farmers. "hus the small and marinal farmers et /..B subsidy for 'icro irriation layin and the other farmers et 86B
subsidy for the same. "his $cheme is also implemented by all line Departments under the 7hairmanship of the District
7ollector.
$ince inception& nearly 52625 he%ta$e# ha!e been brouht under 'icro Irriation throuh this scheme with an

(a of different meditional plants area of culti!ation was achie!ed with a financial allocation of ?s -/.56 lakhs.

"his scheme en!isaes the de!elopment of (orticulture as a whole in the selected !illaes by do!etailin the
e%istin schemes implemented by (orticulture Department. In "heni district& La>#h3!*'$a3 in #eriakulam <lock&
@o"'0!la$*att1 in "heni <lock& ,'thala*'$a3 in 7hinnamanur <lock& Ra1a**a*att1 in Athamapalayam block and
@.@.+att1 in 7umbam block. were selected. In the selected !illaes& baseline sur!ey& #?A e%ercises has done. <ased
on that& action plan was prepared. *ow schemes are bein implemented by do!etailin from e%istin horticulture
$chemes.

Irriated Ariculture 'odernisation and Fater <odies ?estoration and 'anaement ,IA'FA?'2 is a
multidimensional pro>ect that en!isaes brinin about positi!e chanes in the conte%t of irriated Ariculture and Farm
ecoloy& economics& in!ol!in multiple stake holders both at facilitation and implementation le!els.
"he fund released by world bank throuh state o!ernment. In "heni district ;arattar *aalar& Apper ;aiai sub
basins were co!ered under the (orticulture crops like "7 <anana& (ybrid ;eetables seeds ,"omato& <hendi and
<rin>al2. $eeds and plant protection chemical were distributed at 6.B subsidy in pre!ious 1 years and completed.
In "heniyar sub basin this scheme is implemented from -./.0// onwards co!erin "7 <anana and (ybrid
;eetables. In -./.0//& 1: ha were co!ered. Durin -./-0/1 the $cheme was implemented in 13 (a with an outlay of
?s.8.64 =akhs. "his year -./10/5 it was implemented to 36 ha with a financial outlay of /6.-6 =akhs in theni district in
the all 1 sub basins. It was also implemented in selected -. model !illaes in the water shed area of "heni district and
to moti!ated to culti!ate hybrid !eetables in /.. (aDs at the rate of 6 (aDs per model !illae.

In "heni District& #eriyakulam is a well known for mano culti!ation . In this mano rowin belt& $tate (orticulture
Farm& #eriyakulam is located 6 kilometers& away from #eriyakulam town on the national hihway connectin
#eriyakulam to 'adurai in "heni District. It is the third oldest Go!ernment farm& started at /:6. ne%t to #.$.coonoor
andGanniyakumari farms . #re!iously it is known as Go!ernment orchard and '97* ,'odel 9rchard 7um *ursery2.
"his farm act as a base for the establishment of (orticultural ?esearch $tation nearby& Fhich was later promoted to
(orticulture 7ollee and ?esearch Institute& #eriyakulam.. As it is situated in famous mano rowin #eriyakulam belt&
this farm fulfills the needs of fruit rowers of "heni and ad>acent districts.
"he farm aims at disseminatin the orchard practices for healthy rowth and economic maintenance of the
tropical fruit crops. It also ser!es as an ocular demonstration plot to fruit rowers on the day today operations to be
carried out in orchard to et ma%imum profit. "he orchard is enaed at production and distribution of quality&
pediree plants to the farmers. "he orchard is situated at an ele!ation of about 3.. feet '$= with 86. mm
a!erae rainfall. "he ma%imum and the minimum temperature is 1:.3I 7 and //.6I 7 respecti!ely. $oil are sandy
loam in condition with p( rane between 8.1 to 8.6.

crop is 'ano& Gua!a& Aonlaand $apota. #roduction of $eedless@amun rafts is peculiar thins in this farm. "he ua!a
layers produced in this farm is familiar amon the farmers around neihborin districts. "his farm is only one producer of
the hihly demand Gua!a !ariety =ucknow0 54 ,#eriform ua!a2 saplins. #roduction of many types of 9rnamental
plants is an added ad!antae. As soft wood raftin in mano is done in well equipped #oly (ouse set up in this farm&
the success percentae is hih. #resence of !ery old& rare mano !arieties like Godur& ?umani& <athiri is peculiar of this

rapes& yieldin 6 times in - years. "his is a peculiar special climate which is not pre!ailin any where in the world.
<ecause of this special conditions we are ettin a yield of 1- tones per ha which is so hih as compared to : tonnes in
the world and -6 tonnes in india per (ec. 9ut of this we are ettin 83... tonnes of rapes to the !alue of 83 crores per
year. )!en thouh we ot hiher yield per unit area& our rapes are not ha!in the standard quality for e%port or
wine makin. "his is because we are rowin rapes wine yard throuh our local wine& rooted cuttins which is hihly
susceptible for pest & diseases. For this& farmers are usin more chemicals and fertilizers also which resulted poor
quality fruits& fetchin less price as compared to any other rapes rown in rest of India. "o a!oid and rectify the

with 1. cumbum !alley rapes rowin farmers. "hese farmers saw the new !arieties& methods of culti!ation& rowin
plants throuh raftin in docride etc.
Fith the effort of (orticulture Department the !arietal trial plots were laid at cumbum with ?ed lobe& $arath
$eedles& 7hristmus red& Flame seedless& #erlette and 'anik chamon throuh (orticulture 7ollee and research station
at #eriyakulam. In this stae "hirumati. "hulasi kannu& FEo."hiru.?a>endiran& willinly come forward to row musket
rapes rafted on Docride rootstock plants& the rape wine rowth was !ery !iorous and resulted in ood yield. "he
pest and disease incidence were also less. "he Docride rootstock plants also ha!e resistance to salt and alkaline soil
and water. 9ur District 7ollector also !isited the field and saw the difference in rowth and yield by the introduction of
new inno!ation.

In "heni District& the soils are red sandy loam with ood drainae& neutral p( and de!oid of salinity. "he tropical
climatic conditions pre!ailin in this reion are fa!orable to reap fi!e har!ests in two years or at least two crops in a year&
accountin for hiher producti!ity of 1- "ons per ha.
In spite of this& the farmers of "heni District are forcin the !ines for three crops per year and as such the quality of
the 'uscat rapes and the berry size are of inferior quality because of imbalance between source0sink relationships due
