24. Please tell us how you learned about Duke graduate program.
I talked to faculties at UFL; in my memory, Duke has a good ECE program as I learned from faculties at Cornell. Duke's ECE
indeed has faculties in my research interest.

Dear Sir,
Stanford cannot provide official transcript in time. This title page is typed up by me with my
grade earned and the following material is from my account at Stanford’s SCPD (Stanford
Center for Professional Development). This is the closest material I can provide regarding the
course I took at SCPD since there was not enough time to acquire official transcript (it
usually takes 6 weeks or more) at the time Professor Reynolds encouraged me to apply to
Duke to meet deadline of 2/1.

Statement of Purpose Chuan Lee
2599596
Dear Reviewer,
In the University of Florida Ph.D. program, I am trying to search for a new Ph.D.
research topic due to down sizing of the original funded project. I have communicated
with Professor Mattew S. Reynolds at Electrical & Computer Engineering Department,
and this application is the result of his encouragement.
y
=== Purposes and Objectives in Undertaking Graduate Study ===
op
My goal is to pursue advanced research in the area of analog mixed-signal/RF circuits
that leads to Ph.D. degree. My future career interest is inclined toward academia
positions. Industrial positions are profit driven while academia positions are research
driven; that is the motivation.
tC
In my Ph.D. research, I want to build upon the foundation of analog circuit design skill
set and further explore the realm of CMOS analog mixed-signal circuitry. The digital
circuitry is expanding its territory from microprocessor towards antenna/sensor, but there
must be some analog circuitry in between, and the analog circuitry must catch up with the
an
ever increasing speed, information quantity and quality, while maintaining low enough
manufacturing cost in order to make the circuitry useful.
My research interest lies in pushing the limit of CMOS analog circuitry in low power
ic
=== Special Interests and Plans; Strengths and Weaknesses in Your Chosen Field ===
My academic and work/internship background is a good blend of design/measure of
different kind of circuits (analog/microwave/RF); layout experience is also part of my
skill set; plus transistor physics that is essential to circuit design, is also included in my
foundation.
However, these experiences have not had a chance to come together as a flow for tapping
out a chip and verifying the result, but this is a matter of obtaining an opportunity and put
them together and I have confidence in carrying out the elemental tasks to tape out in the
research. Besides this, I also would like to strengthen my muscle in high level
electromagnetism and signal processing in order to expand my horizon for the long run in
future research activities; these two are not essential, but they are important to know.
I also worked with Dr. Schaff (William Schaff) in M.Eng program to investigate
degeneratively doped InN bandgap. I did research to understand InN bandgap
characterization history and the present status from the first relevant paper till the most
recent papers, and developed a good understanding of the goal and methods that was
needed to carry out the characterizations. Dr. Schaff and I produced enough data points
for his further research work and publications.
y
I had the opportunity to be laboratory teaching assistant in M.Eng. program for two
op
courses: “Silicon Device Fundamentals” and “RF Circuits and Systems.” Being a
laboratory TA help refreshing my memory and provided me a second chance to look at
the material, this was very rewarding.
tC
=== What Distinguishes Me from Other Candidates ===
I have fresh experience in industry’s two leading companies, which gives me a
comprehensive view of today’s industry needs in the respective area of the two positions.
Instead of drifting between topics and viewing graduate program as a mere degree-
making process, I apply to graduate school because I am stimulated by what I saw and
an
worked on, and this gives me a strong sense and urge of researching and learning. This
industry-stimulated sense of direction, combined with my multi-discipline, well-prepared
academic background for research, distinguishes me from other candidates.
