InChina,asinallsocietiestoday,thequestionoftheroleofwomenIsgreatlydebated
throughoutdifferentsocialandpoliticalgroups.InimperialChina,womenwereseenas
subordinatestomen.Womendidhavesomepowerinthefamilyandusuallyassumeda
leadershiprole,however,thispowerdidnotextendbeyondthewallsofthehome.
Womencouldnotcarryonafamilyname,andbecauseoftheonechildpolicy,women
wereseenasuseless,becauseifcoupleshadagirl,thefamilynamecouldnotcontinue.
AttheendoftheQingdynastyin1911,theroleofwomenstartedtochangedrastically.
Footbinding,apracticewhereyounggirlsboundtheirfeettightlyintoexcruciating
positionstomakethemseemdainty,wasnolongerpracticed.
Afteryearsofdevelopment,theUnitedNationsgaveChinatherankingof69ththispast
yearforgenderequality,withIndiaatrank101.However,evenwiththisdevelopment,as
youmoveuptheladderinjobs,fewerandfewerwomenareseentowardsthetopwith
jobssuchasCEOorheadofdepartment.
TheroleofwomeninChinagreatlydiffersthroughsocialboundaries,andthoughin
theory,therearemillionsofopportunitiesnowforwomeninChina,womeninruralareas
justdonthaveaccesstothem.Thereisnosetroleforwomeninsociety.Somework
onlyinthehomeandothersareCEOsinmajorcorporations.
Justasallothersocietiesthough,thiswillchangeovertime,andwomenwillbeseen
climbinguptheladderintheworkplace.
