Dixon 3 Crab Tales: e-mail - philip.keddell@sky.com - telephone: 01263 726 831 I feel duty bound to make some comment in response to the letter from Hazel Patrickson on the next page in reference to the ABBA show on the Cromer Pier. We are quite happy, within reason, to promote shows on the Pier by offering free space in our issues leading up to the shows, in return for a couple of free tickets. Does that mean that they, the show promoters can be guaranteed a glowing review from us? No, it doesnt, far from it. We both enjoyed the show as did many good people who attended the evening on the Pier and if we had not enjoyed it, I would have said as much. Enough said, in response, I hope, as I will never try to upset our readers for any reason. Moving swiftly on I will make no comment in reference to who should or should not be the Carnival Queen, as I, Mr Graham, (Letter Below) did not interview the entrants as all the judges did. I do take my hat off to all the girls and in the case of the Carnival Prince, the boys, for putting themselves forward. I cannot imagine it is a lot of fun to not be selected by the judges. The Royal Carnival family really look a lovely bunch of jolly souls who will all, I hope, have a great summer with their numerous activities during the Carnival.
The weeks leading up to Carnival Day should be full of fun in the sun, hopefully. I would like to pay a special thanks to Cindy Johnson who went along with me to two events on Saturday 10th May (See Page 9) I enjoyed the show at Woodlands as did everyone who turned up. One of the main benefts of running the Crab Tales is working alongside people like Cindy, Geoff & Dorothy who between them distribute each issue every fortnight. Enjoy Your Crab Tales Philip Keddell

Dear Philip, Since you asked in your last issue, I would have picked Alice Tiffany as this years Cromer Carnival Queen. Call me a rancid, sexist, old dinosaur, but there is something about good looking blonde women that makes one glad to be alive. I bet if you had a cell full of blokes who were about to meet the fring squad and a blonde woman walked in and told them she would be supervising the executions, every man in the cell would feel a little less upset about being shot. Miss Tiffany would have been a credit to Cromer. Yours Philip Graham. FOUND A Volvo remote car key fob was found at Thorpe Market Road, Roughton, on Monday 5th May. Please Tel. 01263 761 272. Dear Editor, Sheringham RNLI held its AGM at the Burlington Hotel on Monday 28th April. The event, which was well attended by crew, committee & members of the public, enabled the branch committee to summarise the casualty services and events of 2013/14 and discuss their plans for 2014/15. The Operations Manager, Mr Brian Farrow, thanked the Senior Helmsman Mr David Hagan for the excellent manner in which Dear Philip, I would just like to say a huge big thank you to the kind person who left a Lonely Bouquet on the bench outside Cromer Church on Friday 2nd May. It was such a lovely gesture and since fnding the bouquet I have since discovered this kind initiative is worldwide. It certainly put a smile on my face and the fowers are pride of place on my dining table! The next event where people can leave a Lonely Bouquet is 29th June. I will certainly be carrying on this lovely idea and will be leaving a bouquet of my own and hope that many more people can put a smile on someone elses face by leaving a bouquet themselves! If you would like to fnd out more you can search for The Lonely Bouquet on Facebook which is where I found out all about it. Keep up the excellent work- I love reading all the local news! Thank you once again Kind regards Gwen Glenister Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk. He said: The Lifeboat had responded to twelve casualty callouts all of which had been successfully concluded. He said the crew were at full complement despite the diffculties in attracting and retaining suitable dedicated volunteers for this exciting but very demanding role. Branch Chairman, Mr Phil Hawes, praised the work of the High Street Shop manager, Mrs Anne Little and Boat House Shop manager Mrs Mary Blyth & all their volunteer helpers for their out- standing success in their fundraising efforts which make such a fundamental contribution to the stations fnancial well-being. He also thanked the Treasurer Mr Mick Holford for his expert management of the branch accounts and the stations fund raising efforts which had yet again shown an increase year on year. The chairman noted that Messrs David Mann & Trevor Holsey had been awarded the Silver Badge & 20 year bar to their long service Badges. Mr Clive Rayment had been awarded his 20 year bar to his long service medal and Anne Hook & Billy Thirtle had both been awarded Bronze badges. Anne for her management of the RNLI Car Park and Billy for his over 50 years service to the Sheringham Branch of the RNLI both as crew member and Branch Committee member. In summary Mr Hawes said: In such a fast a changing world it is wonderful to see that the old fashioned ideas of service and community are still very active in Sheringham RNLI. Dear Philip, Having seen you at the ABBA Thank you For The Music tribute at the Pier Pavilion I was wondering what your comments would be. I can only think that you dont watch many shows on the pier, if you enjoyed this wait until you see a GOOD show. My husband and I go regularly (it was my 3rd visit that weekend) and always have a really good time. Along with several other people around us, we thought this ABBA tribute was awful. The frst half sound was not right, they had no charisma and the vocals were poor. They sounded like amateurs playing in a local village hall. You were lucky to have free tickets, the rest of us had to pay 21.50 for the privilege of seeing them! Hazel Patrickson Cromer Dear Editor, The Roughton Under 5s Playgroup to Celebrate 20 years In October this year it will be 20 years since the Playgroup opened and we are hoping to celebrate this occasion on October 22nd from 3pm with a cold buffet as well as having photos and memories from the last 20 years. We are looking to locate as many of our old children and staff as possible. If any Crab Tales readers are one of these or if they know someone who is please get in touch with us at: enquiries@roughtonunder5s.co.uk or phone Chloe on: 01263 768 138 Many thanks. Dear Philip, May we through the Crab Tales say that the sum raised at the MS Coffee Morning at Thorpe Market Church raised 377.80. Many thanks to all who donated, helped and bought. Mandy Hayward and Hazel Patrickson Dear Philip, I wish to thank all the people who supported us by coming to the Barn Dance organised by The Aylsham Christmas Lights Committee to raise fnance to provide extra Christmas Lights for the Town. We all had a most enjoyable evening and the grand sum of 714 was raised. I would like to thank all the shops who donated food for this event and the members of the Committee who gave home made foods. Thanks also to Mr. John Starling, Headteacher, who gave us the use of the Bure Valley School free of charge, and the many shopkeepers of Aylsham and again our Committee Members who gave items for the Grand Raffe. We had a tremendous number of Prizes. Finally I must thank all the Committee Members who helped prepare the Hall and the food on Saturday afternoon, worked tirelessly during the evening and cleared up so well with the help of some of the dancers at the end of the evening. A tremendous evening. Well Done. Keith Elphick. Chairman. Aylsham Christmas Lights Community Committee. Cromer Skate Park The campaign to build a skate park in Cromer continues to gain momentum and two recent events have added signifcantly to the coffers. On Friday 2nd May, music lovers of all ages packed into Cromer Community Centre for a gig by local icons the Sweetbeats. Photo by Adam Shawyer. On the Saturday 10th May, around 100 people, organised into 19 teams came to do battle and during the interval fsh & chips from Mary Janes were served, Ben Gasse Coope, Joe Gasse Coope, Adam Spruce, Zeke & Noah Downes, beetled round to collect the meals for the quiz teams. Photo by Jean Spruce. The nights entertainment raised a proft of 304 towards the campaign, but this was boosted to 531, due to a generous donation of 227 by Grant Zelos, the owner of Mary Janes. The campaign is now very close to having the total funding required, and anticipates being able to start constructing the skate park within the next few months. Nth. The Judges they faced were: (from L-R) Amy Elizabeth (from her photo studio), Alli (John Olivers) Laurie (Breakers) and Emma (The Rose Garden) Since so many girls & boys had entered this year, they were reduced to a smaller selection for the fnal and after around 40 minutes the judges managed to choose 8 girls to go into the fnal. (Above Right) The boys were judged 1st and 2nd with a joint 3rd. Cromer Pier Show Childrens Auditions Marlenes School of Dancing was a buzz of excitement on Weds 7th May with children from the various dance classes queuing up to take part in the auditions for this years Cromer Pier Show which opens on 21st June at the Pavilion Theatre. Dance school owner Marlene Duniam said: We are very proud of our long relationship with this very famous show, over the years it has given so many of our dance students the chance to experience the thrill of performing in front of a live audience and being part of a show. Many of our students have gone on to work in the theatre and there can be no better introduction to working with a professional company than appearing in the Cromer Pier Show. This years Pier Show presents an all new cast in a show that promises the very best in live variety featuring a rich mix of comedy, music, song and dance and the visual splendour of superb costumes and colourful sets. Asked about the childrens routines for this years show Marlene would only say that she would be working with the shows devisor, director and choreographer Di Cooke and was looking forward to another great year on the pier. A band that I enjoyed very much when I went along with the Crab Tales Editor, Philip Keddell to the Northrepps Village Hall on Saturday May 10th. The evening opened with the Buddy Holly number: It Wont Matter Anymore. The 4 band members gave us a mix of 50s - 60s and country music that involved a good number of the friends of Northrepps Primary School dancing along to. A most enjoyable evening was had by everyone who also tucked into a delicious buffet and they all seemed to buy a raffe ticket or three. Cindy Johnson A Classy Show At A Classy Venue Experience can go a long way when it comes to raising money for a worthy cause, in this case The East Anglian Air Ambulance. On Saturday May 10th at Woodland Holiday Park in Trimingham, Mr Will Reynolds head- lined the evening show featuring his latest CD Live To Love Another Day.
Together with a Special Guest appearances of the UKs No 1 Cliff Richard Tribute Act - Will Chandler, Claire Reynolds, who has starred as Nancy on Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre and a dazzling dance performance by Dance Attitude. Will Reynolds has a presence on stage, he has the ability to play an assortment of different instruments and his inimitable style is relaxed, confdent, professional and his sincerity is apparent. The lovely Claire Reynolds looked stunning and her superb voice is powerful and commanding. Will Chandler Cliff As If had the house movin & groovin, his voice and movement are very much in the same mould as his mentor. The programme for the evening was very well organised and delightful. The atmosphere was charged and the over- whelming success of the show had a large impact on its capacity audience. I was very impressed with the large and tasteful venue. Top Quality. More please. Cindy Johnson Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk. NR27 9DS 10 New To Norfolk Back on January 27th this year, Faye Bethell BVetMed CertGP (ExAp) MRCVS, opened the doors to her all singing and all dancing new Vets practice on the North Walsham to Norwich Road. On the B1150 about 2 miles from Nth Walsham on the left as you drive towards Norwich. At the ripe old age of 28, you cannot but admire and like this young lady, (Pictured Right) who studied for fve years at the Royal Veterinary College in London, before spending 3 years training, whilst working at a local veterinary practices, obtaining her European GP Certifcate in Exotic Animal Practice. This was followed up by working as a locum in Kings Lynn, Peterborough and Cambridge for around 2 years before looking into where she could set up her own practice. Growing up alongside dogs, cats, sheep, horses and the odd goat, it is not surprising that Fayes career path involved animals, but it took a lot of dedication and imagination, not to mention guts and determination, to reach the goal of owning and operating her own independent purpose built veterinary centre at just 28. Faye said:If you look at it like that, then its been a lot of work and effort crammed into just a few years but I could not have achieved all this without the help and support of my family and friends, veterinary colleagues and, of course, the bank manager. Working at veterinary practices across Norfolk & locum work gave Faye great insight into the professional services pet owners really wanted and valued and also the specifc needs of the pets themselves. As Faye put it: All too often I saw property that had been converted from previous uses and offered less than ideal facilities, or found that out-of-hours critical emergency services required owners to travel long distances to an unfamiliar surgery to receive treatment from unfamiliar vets, who treated conditions without the beneft of knowing the full patient records. Add to that the specifc needs of exotic species (a particular interest and focus for Faye) and I quickly realised that if I was going to offer high quality facilities and treatment, then I would probably need to build my own veterinary centre from scratch Land at the family home in North Norfolk was identifed & although the planning permission process was arduous, with the help of specialist Planning & Highway Consultants, permission to start building was secured, the construction started and the doors opened in January 2014. Long hours have gone into identifying the perfect design and layout which is apparent as you enter Toll Barn Veterinary Centre. With a bright, spacious & airy reception, there are separate waiting areas for cats, dogs and exotics, avoiding the stress of competing for the same space, and direct access to any of 3 Consulting Rooms and a Nurse Clinic. The Pharmacy & in-house Laboratory sit behind the Reception Area to enable vets and nurses to work without bumping into each other and the Centre is laid out to provide a large Prep Area and Scrub Room leading to two separate Operating Theatres. There is a dog ward able to kennel dogs and a completely separate Cat ward, Exotics Ward and Isolation Ward. Faye paid particular attention to providing a fully dedicated Exotics Ward, complete with vivaria, oxygen cages and incubator units, and this has already been well utilised by the increasing number of exotic species being treated. At 5000 sq ft, the property is large, the spacious facilities are fully heated and air conditioned. There is an enclosed dog run at one end of the building so that long stay pets can be exercised. Top of the range equipment is ftted through- out with a Diagnostic Imaging Suite including digital x-ray and utrasound scanner etc. You name it, they have it. Including CPD related education evenings, in- house lectures on veterinary care of exotic pets to other vets & nurses, dental education evenings, and the Centre is a real hub of activity with a full 24/7 emergency service on site and with vet and nurse available at all times, which is a key service to clients. A close bond between the pet, pet owner and the vet is vital and it is clear that regular contact and friendly relationships developed from consultations that extend to 15 mins (minimum) and beyond. Monthly My Pet Plans and Very Important Pet (VIP) Clubs have also been designed to help clients to spread the cost of all routine healthcare with discounts to members. In summary this is a lovely young lady who is there to help you with your pet. I wish Faye all the best. NR27 9DS 12 Now it is time to leave my second home for the last 14 mths with John & Shirley and go off to the Guide Dogs Training School in Birmingham for special training, then after another 16 weeks of training; I hope I have made the grade and become a Guide Dog, then after 10 weeks of training I will be paired up to a Blind person who I will live with and help to get around everywhere until I retire, I hope I can work well for them, when I retire I hope to go back to John & Shirley if my Blind friend does not need me any more. Ive overheard Shirley & John talking and they say Im a very clever girl; good, intelligent and very fumy. I know they love me and I love them, but I cant wait until I take the next exciting step towards learning to be a guide dog. Comments by my Shirley: Jemima is a ball of fuff, grown into an intelligent giant of a dog, she keeps us busy from morningtil night with her enthusiasm for work and play. She has given us a better understanding of the training a guide dog undergoes and the quality of life someone will eventually gain. Never a dull moment we dont regret a minute! Our highly trained and loving dogs help people with simple everyday tasks that so many of us take for granted. With a guide dog by their side mothers with sight loss can walk their children safely to school, teen- agers can fnally take those vital steps of indep- endence and go to the shops on their own for the very frst time; and many elderly members of our community whose sight has signifcantly deteriorated can get out and about and engage in society rather than being trapped in their homes alone. Fundraising is very important, all funds raised for Guide Dogs are raised through the publics generosity - legacies, donations & fundraising; it takes 50,000 to cover the life time cost of each dog, one very popular way to sponsor a Guide Dog is to name a puppy. If you are interested in giving a donation or sponsoring a Guide Dog please look on the web site to contact either the head offce or your local Guide Dog branch. www.guidedogs.org.uk
Thanks to John Morris for sending us this article and photographs. All I had to do was be good, friendly, look at people and smile, John did all the talking. By January 2014 I had learned many things for John & his wife Shirley they have helped me to grow up, learn special words of command, lead work, getting used to wearing the training coat so everyone knows who I am & what Im doing. February 18th two days before my frst birthday I went for a special meeting at the Breeding Centre and met up with my Mum Faith and her handler Dee, it was the frst time I have seen her since I was 5 weeks old, I was a bit silly and playful, I can see where I get my good looks from. There has been another Shirley I have known in my life, Shirley is my Guide Dogs supervisor who has made sure that other Shirley & John have trained me correctly; nice lady, she is a special friend. I went to a childrens school in March, to tell them all about me, but as I can only do doggy talk John & Ruth who looks after Archie the stud dog did the talking for me. There were 500 children which is a lot but I thought they were all very well behaved. I like playing and having fun; free running with Nero & Rich, I also went free running with Josie & Lola who are mum & daughter and are looked after by Lynne they have all helped me to learn how to have fun when free running. After six weeks I left my mum and went to the Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre in Warwick- shire; my new home for the next week was in the Puppy block, this was when I frst met John who along with his wife Shirley would look after me at their home and become my Puppy Walkers for the next 12/14 months. On April 11th last year, I was taken to live with Shirley & John who would care for me and do my initial training. I was not allowed to walk outside my home until I had my frst injections so they had to carry me around the shops at frst. At 12 weeks I had my injections, on my frst visit to the vets, he pushed & prodded a bit, no problem, nice guy. I continued to see him over the next 12 months to have my weight checked; I know just where the weighing scales are! When I was 13 weeks old, I could at last go for walkies and have lots of adventures, new things to see, hear & explore; I also started puppy class so I could begin to learn all the things I would need to know and mix with all the other Guide Dog puppies of the same age. I met Nero there who was being trained by Rich another puppy walker. Nero and I became best buddies, we went on training walks together and then later in the year on train rides to the airport where we saw the planes (strange things they are) away from the work we also had lots of fun free running together. In May I went on my frst visit to the seaside at East Runton. I made many new friends when I visited the shops and restaurants in the village especially East Runton Stores and my biggest adventure here was a trip to the beach. It was interesting to see all that water & sand which felt strange on my feet. While in Norfolk I enjoyed my frst journey on a train and had a bus ride, both strange things but I soon got used to them. Over the next 5 months, through the summer, I continued to visit East Runton and Cromer which helped me to continue my training in a different area from my home, all of the local people liked me I will miss them all. October saw a change in the weather and I had my frst impressions of winter, colder, wet days, at frst I didnt them but I had to get use to them as whoever I would be working with later would need me to go out in all weathers. Through the winter more training and classes to attend learning all the time, I now was able to go fundraising with other Guide Dogs. 13 Crab Tales: e-mail - philip.keddell@sky.com - telephone: 01263 726 831 Viva la Drag ! Openwide Coastal.. ...have taken delivery of a smart new temporary Box Offce while the repair work continues on Cromer Pier after the storm surge last December. Councillor Glyn Williams Cabinet Member for Leisure & Cultural Services offcially opened the temporary offce on Saturday 3rd May. On hand to help celebrate the opening were members of Cromer & Sheringham Operatic & Dramatic Society whose soon to open run of Oliver will be one of the frst to beneft from the new Box Offce. Marlenes School of Dance were represented by children from the various Saturday classes some of whom will be hoping to perform in this years Cromer Pier Show when it opens for the summer run on the 21st June. This years show with an all new cast promises to return to the more traditional routes of the Seaside Special bringing plenty of music comedy, song and dance and of course the frst half fnale with children from Marlenes School of Dance. To help the celebration, members of the Operatic Society brought along a cake to share with those attending the opening Ruth Elliott, one of the publicity team from the society said: Its wonderful to have the Box Offce back at the land end of the pier. Our tickets sales are doing extraordinarily well and having the box offce at this location will make booking tickets much easier for everyone. We have had a long & happy relationship with the Theatre and look forward to continuing that relationship long into the future. Our frst show at the theatre was in 1952, we then missed two years because of the Great Storm of 1953 so this occasion in our 100th year of the Society makes this occasion rather special The Property team at NNDC hopes to have the repair works to the shop, offce and restaurant area completed before the schools break up for the main summer season. This will be a tight programme but the team is confdent that it can be delivered, in the mean- time a temporary box offce will be sited on the slope at the entrance to the pier for 3 months while works are completed. There was more good news for staff members of Cromer Pier this week when they received a Commendation award from the Mayor and members of Cromer Town Council. The award was presented in recognition of the valued and outstanding contribution to the community of Cromer in getting the Pier and Pavilion Theatre up and running so quickly after the December storm surge so that theatre-goers could celebrate the festive season with a visit to the Cromer Christmas Show. Rebecca Wass, General Manager of the Cromer Pier said: I am delighted to have received this award on behalf of all the staff that got stuck in and got the pier open so quickly, it was and still is our mantra that The show must go on what ever the problems The temporary Box Offce will be open daily from 10am - 6pm with extended hours from the opening of the Cromer Pier Show 21st June 20th September. Hayfever (Allergic Rhinitis) Hayfever has been recognised as a problem since medieval times, and those of you who suffer will recognise what a huge problem it can be. Rhinitis just means irritation of the nose and this can be seasonal (usually hay fever) or perennial (all year round). Rhinitis can also be associated with nasal polyps, but this short piece will concentrate on allergic seasonal rhinitis (hay fever). The hay fever season runs from the end of February until the end of October (and if like me you are allergic to most of the plants around during that time, you will recognise symptoms which start before the onset of spring around the beginning of March). The first allergens to emerge are tree pollens (February to June). Weeds follow peaking from April to September and grass starts to release its pollen from May to July. The symptoms of hay fever vary from person to person (and from day to day), but include: itchy runny nose, blocked nose & feeling of being blocked up, a feeling that there is fluid dripping down the back of the throat, itchy runny eyes and some people even feel unwell and feverish (hence hay fever). That is all the bad news, the good news is that there are lots of treatments which do work for hay fever. Antihistamines: these are tablets (or liquid for children) and have little in the way of side effects. The incidence of side effects does vary from patient to patient and from preparation to preparation; so if you do have problems with one medication it is worth trying another. Many antihistamines for adults and children are available from the local pharmacist. If you cannot find one to suit you, it may be worth having a telephone consultation with your doctor to discuss alternatives. Nose sprays: there are 3 choices: A nose spray containing an antihistamine (Azelastine hydrochloride), which works relatively quickly and is good for eye symptoms too, but which does not treat the underlying inflammation in the nose and wears off quickly. A nose spray containing a topical steroid treatment which takes longer to work but which has a longer duration of action. A nose spray which contains both! Eye drops One preparation (Cromoglicate) is available over the counter and if used regularly will provide good relief from the eye symptoms associated with hay fever ( it does have to be used 4 times a day) Nedocromil eye drops only need to be used twice daily and are only available on prescription. Azelastine hydrochloride eye drops are an antihistamine eye drop which is again available on prescription only. There are several measures we can all take to help hay fever symptoms Avoid being outdoors early mornings or late evenings when the pollen is in the lower atmosphere. Wear sunglasses. If your car has air conditioning - use it! Avoid windy hot days. Avoid mowing the grass and stay indoors when the lawn mowers are out. Living near the coast appears to be better than inland. Finally the Allergy UK website has a huge amount of advice and tips about hayfever and other allergies, so have a look at it. (Copyright Maurice Gray) Two Women..... ....were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize. Please allow me to help. Im a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if youd allow me she told him.
Oh, no, Ill be all right. Ill be fne in a few minutes the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands there at his groin.
At her persistence, however, he fnally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside.
She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked: How does that feel?
He replied: That feels great....but I still think my thumb is broken! Thanks to Russell Sparkes for this. 20 High Street Cromer Norfolk NR27 9HG Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk.
