Personality Essay
Lewis Carroll once said, Who in the world am I? Ah, thats a great puzzle. Who are
we? That is a question that has gained mans interest for years past and years to come. Self-
discovery is a process I hold with high regards, along with the majority of the world. Everybody
goes through a period in their life where they ask themselves, Who in the world am I? I must
admit that for me self-discovery is something Ive been doing since the day I found out about it. I
take Determine Your Future, What Career is Best for You, What Type of Person are You and
personality test all the time. Personality, I have to say, is my favorite type of self-discovery test.
Personality test help determine what Im like, what I should work on, what type of career would
fit me and more! Recently I took a personality test and the results said that I was a INTJ, also
known as a Rationalist. Of course it went into greater detail about what being a Rationalist
meant and I can honestly say that I agreed with 99.9% of it, not all of it but most of it. I am in
need of self-reflecting to really analyze and evaluate the results. That is what this essay is going
to help me achieve.
People with the INTJ personality type are independent, ambitious, self-confident, and
long-range thinkers. They value truth, knowledge, competence, and autonomy. Rationalists,
INTJs, are brain-stormers by nature. They live in a world of ideas and strategic planning; no idea
M 2
is too far-fetched. Rationalists have very high standards for everything they do; the best and
nothing less. They trust logic, yearn for success; seek knowledge, prize technology, and dream of
understanding how the world operates. Some may call INTJs 'lone-wolves' because they prefer to
work alone, believing others will only slow them down. As teenagers Rationalist can be seen as
serious and reserved, and quite often they're labeled as bookworms. Illogical arguments and
incompetence frustrate Rationalist. Qualities of INTJs that bother others are that they aren't
sociable, too wordy, live in the future, and blow up when criticized. Rationalist pride themselves
on being ingenious, logical, honest, and strong willed. Rationalist are problem-solvers with a
witty sense of humor. Rationalist need time to evaluate because of their analytical nature. They
make reasonable mates, individualizing parents, and strategic leaders. INTJs are always trying to
find out how to make something work better. Also, they tend to be open-minded when it comes
to ideas. Rationalists have a need to accomplish their goals and will work tirelessly on anything
they set their mind to. They are logical and fiercely independent in their critical thinking. INTJ
personalities are very rare, making up as little as 5 to 10 percent of the global population.
Famous Rationalists are Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, and Walt Disney. This is an overview of
what a Rationalist is, and I agree with almost all of it. In fact, I agree with 99.9% of it.
There are quite a few aspects of being a Rationalist that I agree completely. One of the
first things is that, in your mind, the more you know the better off you are. I live by few quotes
and one of them is Know what you know and know what you dont know so you can learn it.
Knowledge is power, seeing knowledge is power in the test results automatically I was like Yes,
yes that is me! There is not a time when Im not trying to learn about the world around me. My
favorite channels are the History, Discovery, and National Geographic channels. Rationalists are
always questioning, just like me! My Godfather always says Questioning is a source of
M 3
learning. As you can guess, due to my love of knowledge I question everything. Who, what,
when, where, why and how are, by far, my most commonly used words. Ive even been called a
mini-journalist multiple times. So, yes I definitely agree with that aspect of my personality type.
Thats not the only thing I agree with though; it also said rationalist dislike illogical arguments
and incompetence. If those arent two things I dislike with a passion then I dont know what is.
One of the most infuriating things is having an argument or discussion with someone who knows
no logic. It gives the argument no purpose at all, a complete waste of time! When I argue or
discuss things with others I either have a point to prove or I want to expand my understanding of
the topic, however I cant do either in an illogical argument. I also despise incompetence, I truly
cant stand it. I just value intelligence and I believe one is not incompetent, you choose to be that
way. That bothers me that you have this whole world of knowledge and you take it for granted.
Rationalists tend to live in the future, that is completely valid when talking in reference to me.
You can ask anybody who knows me well that Im always thinking ahead. I know what I want to
do in the future. I always have a five year plan and a fifteen year plan. For example, right now
people ask what I want to be when I grow up and automatically I respond by going into what I
plan to do after high school; go to MIT (hopefully) get a doctorate degree in Mathematics with a
minor in economics and then go to Yale (again, hopefully) for law, pass the bar and become an
in-house lawyer for a corporation (medical). Contingency plans, I always have one! You always
need a backup, that's one of my mottoes. Which is a good example as to why I agree with the fact
my personality trait is to be strategic. While that is only a bit of what I agree with, just know I
agree with most of it. However like I said, I agree with most of itnot all. There are some
aspects of an INTJ personality that I disagree with.
M 4
I disagree with the fact that Im not social and dont care for social functions based on my
personality trait, along with the element that I cant take criticism without blowing up about it. I
am very social and have many friends who could testify for me. I would even go as far as to call
myself a social butterfly; there are very few people I cant get along with. Especially during
middle school I was friends with all the different cliques. There wasnt a person I didnt know
As for social functions, Im invited to quite a few and I end up going to 8 out of 10 of them.
When I go I socialize with people and turn into the social butterfly I am. I happen to take
criticism very well. I take criticism with a smile because it tells me where I can improve. The
three elements of being a Rationalist are the only things I disagree with. Furthermore, my
personality type is a big factor in the relationships I have.
My relationships with my friends, family and school are deeper and closer because of my
personality type. My relationship with school is close because of my desire to learn and thirst for
knowledge. I want to learn as much as possible so I pay attention and focus as much as possible
in school. Rationalists are very analytical, stable, reliable, and dedicated. This helps me have a
deeper and closer relationship with my friends and family. Along with the fact INTJs value trust
and loyalty. This being because I chose who I surround myself carefully with my analytical skills
and once your close to me Ill treat you like I would myself. I'm dedicated; once I put my trust in
you I'll treat you with the utmost respect. Plus due to myself being so independent and self-
contained, I will understand the value of privacy and independence. I'm a generally 'low
maintenance' person, I wont require much attention either. In addition, I value loyalty so Im a
very loyal person. All-in-all the relationships I have will be strong, deep, and very close. My self-
reflection is coming to an end.
M 5
I am a Rationalist, thats what I am. I am independent, witty, logical, analytical,
intelligent, and self-contained. I am who I am, that wont be changing anytime soon. This
personality test is a big puzzle piece in the puzzle of Who in the world am I? As a result of this
eye opening test giving me a great overview of my personality, I am a few steps closer to being
able to answer the question Who I am? Lewis Carroll was right, finding who one is, is very
challenging. Self-discovery will never die out amongst the generations but carry on and thrive.
Who are we? That question has captured mans interest since the beginning of time, trust me
when I say, its not going anywhere anytime soon.
