SEVEN CASTES of Mohyal Saraswat as they exist at present, namely 1. BALI, 2. BHIMVAL, 3. CHIBBER, 4. DUTT, 5. LAU, 6. MOHAN, 7. VAID The ancient Mohiyals paid homage to their spiritual leader Parashurama, the Jamadagni. Mohiyals have been patrons of Hinduism and Sikhism in remote outposts beyond south Asia in the 1800s. A Mohiyal of the Dutt clan spent nearly all the savings of his life just to sponsor repair at the Atashgah fire temple in Baku, central Asia. Mohiyal is derived from Mahipal, ex.: Possessor of land. The Mohiyals are also known as Mahipa Rajah, Sapthabanshi. They are a sub division of Saraswat Brahmins. They have been agriculturists or soldiers and have little in common with the other Saraswats from time immemorial. While in Ravalpindi the fine superior section of Bhunjahi Saraswats used to give daughters to the Bhimwal Mohiyal Saraswats. 1. SIX CASTES which embraced Islam due to vicissitudes of time: 1. Hussaini Brahmin, 2. Gakhar, 3. Khake, 4. Bombe, 5. Lange, 6. Lohana (Bhaiband Amil). When the Khatris of Punjab ostracized the Aroras, uprooted from Sind, and asked their priest not to perform their marriages and funeral rites, the latter in consternation approached their elderman, Sidh Jachik of Arrokot, to help them in the quandary. Sidh Jachik, distressed at the plight of the Aroras, appealed to saintly Mohiyal Gossain Bhojraj Vaid of Tatta (in Multhan ) to prevail upon his fellow Mohiyals to come to the rescue of the Aroras by performing the religious ceremonies. In response to the humanitarian call, in a rare gesture, seven eminent Mohiyals were drawn from each caste under the leadership of Gossain Sham Lau and Bhojraj Vaid, and declared that they will henceforth adopt the priestly profession (who ceased priestly functions long ago). The Mohiyals who took part in the conclave were Bhojraj Vaid and Shamlau. Their progenies came to be known as Bhojpotre and Shamupotre respectively. These families were expelled from Mohiyal clan as a punishment for having adopted clerical avocation. This episode took place in the closing decade of seventeenth century when there was lot of political turmoil in the country. Lohana / Luvana are Brahmakshatras of Saraswat Brahmins. They are traders in Multan and Mallani in Punjab who migrated to Sind, then further to Kutch. Their descendants are Lohana, Aamil, Bhaiband. Like the wadhwani clan under Wadhoram, Mangwani under Mangoram, Kalkadasani under Kalkadas, Pruthvimalani under Pruthvimal are descendants of Shamlau. The Ramchandani clan under Ramanand, Macchani under Madodas are descendant of Gossain Bodh Raj Vaid and others. 2. FOUR CASTES which migrated to Rajasthan and Gujarat, viz. 1. Anavil / Bhatela 2. Bhanushali / Vegusor / Vegars 3. Nagar / Veduvey 4. Audich / Rawal Brahmins: 3. Page 4 of 10 << previous page | next page >> The Saraswats of India Copyright 2011 IND_SARASWAT. All rights reserved.
