Identify keys manuscripts and particular pages from these manuscripts. Appreciate the manuscripts of early christen period of Ireland. Develop the relevant vocabulary to describe the elements in the manuscripts they are exploring.
Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme: On completion pupils should be able to: Discuss where the manuscripts were made, the materials used and who produced the manuscripts. Be able to identify key manuscripts and be able to discuss and draw these images Students will use relevant vocabulary when discussing the manuscripts.

Investigate Students will investigate manuscript inscription lettering and the monks who made them. They will investigate the materials used vellum (calf skin) for pages, the leather to bind manuscript covers, and the techniques and the process of how the monks extracted coulour to create these decorative pages, pigments come from various sources animals, plants and natural minerals the power pigment is then mixed with a binding agent which can range from eggs, blood, gum, sap, honey to ear wax. This page is a fine example of illumination it is still as clear today as it was 1200 years ago. Magnificent sweeping design, surrounded by minute detail. Abstract patterns and tiny humans figures. Look closely and you will see intricacies so delicate and suttle, so extract and compact.
Arrest of Christ Book of Kells
Famous page depicted the arrest of Jesus two figures grab Christ, at the top of the arch two fierce monsters snarled, and with tongues intertwined suggesting the violence of the occasion. Jesus is calm and solemn arm outstretched and surrender. As with other paintings in the book the scene is stylized with no attempts of realistic human depictions.

On either side of the rounded panel our 3 dog like creatures with entwined feet and each biting each others back.

Introduce students to manuscripts by showing them imagery and having a discussion in class about the manuscripts. Distribute visual aid and imagery to help students to get some understanding of the amount of time and work it took to create these manuscripts. Class discussion on the pages from the manuscripts Pupils will work in small groups exploring the manuscripts and filling in worksheets on what they can identity. Distribute visual aid and show slideshow so students can identify and describe some key pages from the books. Show utube clip of the book of Kells and ask students fill in questionnaire based on what they see.
Conclude the scheme by displaying illustrations from the book of Kells and the book of Durrow and posing questions to the students

Timeline/Sequence of Lessons: Week 1 Introduce students to manuscripts their function and how they were made look at the Book Of Durrow and the Book of Kells. Show slide side and discuss and pose questions to the students Week 2 Explore pages from manuscripts Chi Rho, The Arrest of Christ Carpet page and also Carpet page from the book of Durrow. Show YouTube clip and students will fill in questionnaire. Week 3 Students will discuss key manuscripts they have identified students will complete a worksheet. Conclude scheme by displaying key manuscript pages
