Mission Statement
The sisters of the Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, strive to strengthen Sisterhood amongst women by
providing Service and promoting Cultural Diversity to our members and our community, thus securing the bond of
kinship for posterity. Kappa Phi Lambda exists to further educate individuals about Pan-Asian culture, while keeping our
own identities. We aim for academic excellence, keeping in mind the importance of education and learning as the key
to strength, awareness, and fulfillment.

Why AFSP?
Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority Incorporated at Stony Brook University is proud to present its fifth annual event Out of the
Darkness. This benefit dinner is meaningful and dear to our hearts. It is a tribute to one of the founders of Kappa Phi
Lambda at Stony Brook University, Kelly Ngai *Nyx*. Kelly suffered from depression and unfortunately committed
suicide. We feel that it is critical for college students to be aware of individuals who suffer from depression or have
thoughts of suicide before it is too late. The Sisters of Delta Chapter strive to use this opportunity to raise awareness
throughout the campus. Thank you for making this event a successful contribution to depression and suicide
prevention.

Suicide is even more frequent among older people.
The highest rates are found in men over 50. Before
the AFSP was formed, there was no national non-
profit organization dedicated to funding the
research, education and treatment programs
necessary to prevent suicide. Over the past 20
years, we have changed that.

To fully achieve its mission, AFSP engages in the
following Five Core Strategies:

Promotes policies and legislation that
impact suicide and prevention
Provides programs and resources for

Mission Statement
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading
national non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding
and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to
reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by
suicide.

History
In 1987, a number of leading experts on suicide came together with
business and community leaders and survivors of suicide to form AFSP, a
registered nonprofit organization. They believed that only a combined
effort would make it possible to fund the research necessary for progress
in the prevention of suicide. Such an approach has proven successful
with heart disease, cancer and diabetes and it was hoped that it would
be successful in dealing with depression and suicide.
Many of the original founders were concerned with the alarming rise in
youth suicide over the past four decades. During this period, the suicide
of young men had tripled; that of young women had doubled. Suicide is
now the second major cause of death among high school and college
students.
