District students prepare for military
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Being in the presence of mili-
tary veterans was nothing new
for Seneca High School senior
Chandler Dwyer.
Continuing in the footsteps of
other family members, Dwyer
will be heading to the Navy after
graduating in June. He was able
to see through those around him
the importance of serving in the
military.
However, for some of the other
27 students in the Lenape Region-
al High School District who will
be heading to a branch of the mil-
itary at the end of the school year,
they are heading into uncharted
territory, with little idea of what
to expect.
After being honored at the dis-
tricts fifth annual Armed Servic-
es Awards Ceremony, they were
introduced to a new community,
one of which only a handful of se-
lect alumni can say they are a
part.
At the ceremony, members of
the school and local community
gave thanks to students prepar-
ing to enter the military and com-
munity members who have or are
currently serving.
However, there was another

PARCC testing to
hit public schools
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
It's coming.
The Partnership for Assess-
ment of Readiness for College
and Careers, or PARCC test, will
be administered in all New Jersey
public school districts beginning
in the 2014-15 school year.
The Mt. Laurel School District
has been preparing for the
PARCC through changes in cur-
riculum to align with Common
Core standards and upgrading
the technology needed to take the
test.
However, it was not apparent
how many parents and members
of the community were aware of
the drastic changes about to be
made in the district.
To provide an open dialogue
about PARCC, the school district
held a summit on Thursday night
at Hartford School. The topic was
Common Core standards, PARCC
and the effect it will have on edu-
cation in Mt. Laurel going for-
ward.
Superintendent Antoinette
Rath explained to the audience of
parents, teachers and community
members the transition to PARCC
will not be easy. The goal of the
summit was to get feedback from
participants on how the district
should inform the community
heading into next year.
The district pointed out the
night was not to be a debate about
the new standards. Director of
Curriculum Sharon Vitella point-
ed out such a debate would be
counterproductive.
Some of you may not like the
PARCC assessment, but as a pub-
lic school district in the state of
New Jersey, we have to adminis-
ter the assessment, she said.
Thursday's discussion touched
on two main topics; communica-
tion to parents about the test and
attendance concerns.
Much of the audience at the
summit agreed communication
within the school community was
a necessity. Many suggested hav-

PARCC scores count for all districts
ing a PARCC summit at each school, while
others suggested having more information
through the district newsletter, pamphlets,
online and through other mediums.
As far as attendance goes, Rath ex-
plained students, especially at the lower
levels, were missing too much school and
would fall behind in learning the skills
they need to succeed at the next level.
Nearly 50 percent of our kids are
absent six or more times a year, she
said.
Rath pointed toward students who
are pulled out of school for vacations
as one example of students falling
behind.
Despite the statistics, some were not
sure if there was a way to keep parents
from pulling kids out of school. There were
some suggestions to offer incentives to kids
who attend school frequently, but were
others werent sure what the solution may
be.
Prior to the parent discussion, Rath took
some time to explain why the Common
Core standards and PARCC are important
to children's education in the 21st century.
With ever-advancing technology, she em-
phasized the importance for a child to un-
derstand material.
Being able to memorize facts is simply
not enough, she said. Google can do that
for us.
Rath said she is behind a bill in the
Legislature to pump the brakes on
PARCC and allow school districts to ease
into the test. As it stands, next year's
PARCC scores will count for all school dis-
tricts.
The school district gathered suggestions
from 12 different tables of participants.
Some of the suggestions could be imple-
mented as soon as the coming weeks, while
others may be looked at later on. For a list
of some of the suggestions, log on to mtlau-
relschools.org.

ell phones are one of the great-
est inventions of the last 30
years. Coupled with other tech-
nological advances such as wireless
internet and the creation of social
media, cell phones have given us the
ability to connect to the world in the
palm of our hand no matter where we
go.
In misguided or uneducated hands,
though, cell phones can be dangerous.
Criminals use cell phones to plan and
execute crimes. They can be used to
perpetuate hate. They can be used at
the wrong time, such as behind the
wheel, and be the cause of life-threat-
ening circumstances to others.
And in schools, in the hands of kids
who dont fully grasp the effects of
their actions, they can be objects that
promote cruelty and lewdness, and
can seriously damage a childs future.
A middle school in Basking Ridge in
Somerset County is dealing with this
situation right now. Last week, admin-
istrators said they found nude photos
of students on several cell phones. The
districts superintendent sent a letter
about the incident to parents, inform-
ing them of a deadline for children to
delete the images, otherwise theyd
face disciplinary action through the
school and possibly criminal charges
from the county prosecutors office.
Because the nude pictures were of
middle school students, under the age
of 16, it would be classified as child
pornography.
Monitoring a childs cell phone
usage which includes their calls,
texts, video chats, web browsing and
social media usage is ultimately the
parents job, much like monitoring
what they watch on TV or look at on
the computer at home.
But it may be time for schools to
step up, too, and take a proactive ap-
proach with education. Schools al-
ready take on tough subjects with
young students, such as educating
them about stranger danger and sex
education.
Today, this education should expand
to include the potential dangers of tex-
ting, sharing and social media usage.
Cell phones are great. Texting is
great. Facebook is great. Twitter is
great. And so is everything else you
can do on a phone.
But if its not done properly, with
the right education and guidance, it
can go tragically wrong with the tap of
a touchscreen.
Those phones can be dangerous
Schools should take proactive approach to cell phone, social media education
Your thoughts
Should schools play a larger role in edu-
cating students about the dangers of cell
phones? Share your thoughts on this, and
other topics, in a letter to the editor.

Students thanked by community
out the evening, a connection
only members of the military
could make.
The ceremonys keynote speak-
er was Dennis Devery, a Mt. Lau-
rel native who spent 30 years in
the military, and is the vice presi-
dent for institutional planning
and research at Thomas Edison
State College.
Devery gave the graduating
seniors an honest talk about the
military, saying while many peo-
ple wholeheartedly support veter-
ans, others simply dont care.
This is where bonding with veter-
ans becomes so important.
They are the shoulders on
which you will build your legacy,
Devery said.
While there are many advan-
tages coming with military serv-
ice, Devery explained there will
be many sacrifices and tribula-
tions with it as well.
Seneca High School senior Jay-
den Fries is prepared to make
those sacrifices. Fries, who will
be going into the Air Force, said
he finds it easy to connect with
those who have already served.
You see a veteran, and they
sacrificed, and we are about to
sacrifice ourselves, he said. You
make that connection immediate-
ly.
Dwyer said the appreciation
for veterans couldnt be under-
stated.
Without them, there wouldnt
be us here, he said. We really
appreciate that.
The school districts goal in
holding the ceremony isnt just to
honor military personnel, but to
create a Lenape community
where military alumni can re-
turn home and talk about those
entering the military.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm told the seniors how cru-
cial it was to support their fellow
veterans.
Hopefully this ceremony lets
you know the importance of their
service in your country, she said.
Chris Heilig, the director of
programs and planning for the
district, said the district knows
the importance of serving in the
military. The creation of a com-
munity of military personnel
within Lenapes alumni has
helped to keep the awards cere-
mony going strong for five years.
A number of veterans, old and
young, received awards at the cer-
emony. For students such as
Dwyer and Fries, those veterans
have served as role models for
them.
Soon, Dwyer and Fries will be-
come role models for Lenape stu-
dents of the future.
