Have you ever wanted to make your own batteries? I will show you how to make
one using ordinary household items. The batteries are very small, and to power
bigger things, You may need to make more and connect them.

To Build this, You will need
Water 1.
Carbon Rod 2.
Zinc strip 3.
Wires 4.
Empty spice container 5.
Hot Glue gun 6.
Salt 7.
Something small powered by small batteries 8.
Thats all you need to make your own battery! 9.
I will teach you how to get a carbon rod. Foil can be used as a substitute for the

To get a carbon rod, You can take apart a non alkaline battery. Generally the
batteries will say "super heavy duty" or "heavy duty" Never Ever take apart the
one that says Alkaline.
To take it apart, You need to use needle nose pliers to peel off the outer layer of
the battery Next use a knife to cut off the top of the battery. Once its off, you will
see the top of the carbon rod, slowly pull untill the carbon rod is out.
Step 2: Drill Hole

Drill a whole the size of the carbon rod so it fits snug. Place the carbon rod into
one of the hole leaving about 1/2 an ince sticking out from the top
Get your foil and cut a small rectangle. Keep Folding untill you make a cylinder
about the same size as the carbon rod. Place this into the other whole

Yes. I didn't have any carbon rods and I was showing everyone where you
can find some. If you have some you dont need to take the battery apart

Can't you just get the carbon rods from pencil graphite? I think that would even
work better (multiple rods, more surface area) and is easier to get, especially if
you are a teacher doing this for your class
bbrown26 (/member/bbrown26/)
Very nice! Great to explain the principals behind electricity. Any chance you have
a voltmeter to see how many one of these things pull off?

Check out American Science and
Surplus, www.sciplus.com. They
have a very nice multimeter for $8.95.
Once you have one, you will use it for
*everything*. I keep one in my house,
one in the garage, and one at the
office--they're useful for so much
stuff (but 90% of what you will use is
the Ohmmeter for checking
continuity)
Kevanf1 (/member/Kevanf1/)
I like this, well done. Yes, you get my vote. This is a nice, easy for anybody to
make, Instructable. It' s clean, relatively safe and instructional :)
Now, for some further ideas. You can also make a simple cell using various fruits
and vegetables, lemons are a very good example. I wonder if the voltage would
be increased if you were to add lemon juice or even vinegar to the water? Just a
thought for further experimentation :)

This is a handy way to teach
a novice how things are
made. I would recommend
that the foil be put around
the inside edge of the jar
and not just a square piece.
The salt solution must be as
strong as possible for that
will all ow more current to
flow
sanFarisH (/member/sanFarisH/)
How many volts?
alzie (/member/alzie/) sanFarisH
I remember doing this as a kid looong ago, ~0.5V
Youll need quite few to light a led, 6 - 8 of them for a wht led.
The stronger the acid or base, the better.
Use small containers.
They only need to be slightly larger than your electrodes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc%E2%80%93carbon_battery is a good

the electrolyte used.
