Lab 3: EQUIVALENT INDUCTANCE IN SERIES AND PARALLEL COPULING; COUPLING

COEFFICIENT

OBJECT:
1. Measure equivalent inductance of two coils, for series coupling with aiding current
and opposing current.
. Measure equivalent inductance of two coils, for parallel coupling with aiding
current and opposing current
!. "eter#ine Coupling Coefficient $%& as a function of distance and plot it.

1. Power off LCR meter while making connections and after performing the lab.
2. Carefully handle the apparatus. Do not drop the helmholtz coils or LCR meter down.

!.!.1 .nductance:
ccording to #araday$s law% &'he induced emf in a circuit is e(ual to the negati)e of the rate at
which the magnetic flu* through the circuit is changing with time.+
,1-
.t is an ability of a conductor to induce
)oltage when the current changes. the
smbol for inductance is L and its unit is /enry ,/-.

!.!. Mutual .nduction:
1hen the current in a inductor changes% the )arying flu* can cut across an other inductor nearby%
producing induced )oltage in both inductors. 'his is called 2utual induction. 'he unit of mutual
inductance is also /enry ,/-.
!.!.! Coefficient of Coupling:
'he fraction of total flu* from one coil linking another coil is the coefficient of coupling 3k$
between the coils.

2 1
L by produced flu*
L and L between linkages flu*
k =
,!-
.f k 41 then there is loose coupling between the coils if k has high )alue than there is tight
coupling between them and if k56 then there is no mutual inductance. .n terms of mutual
inductance
