Tim Mack Topped Samho Korea Cup
Globe-trotting American
Tim Mack ended a long
drought with a massive victo-
ry in the 11th Samho Korea
Cup 2009 as he defeated
challenger, Kim Yoon Ho,
237-232 in the TV Finals on
Friday.
Tim Mack opened in his
third frame of the title match
as his challenger, Kim Yoon
Ho of KPBA started with a
turkey to build up a 31 pin
lead. When the American
recovered with a turkey in an
attempt to narrow to gap, the
Korean downed another
turkey to maintain his dis-
tance.
The 38-year-old top-seed
then struck out from frame 8
to end the match with 237 while a
costly opened frame in the ninth
Gordon Tunison Took EBC Labor Day Classic
What a way to kick off the
bowling season - a Labor Day
tournament. It couldn't have been
a better way for Gordon Tunison,
who shoots a 254 in the champi-
onship match as he wins the
Entertainers Bowler's Classic
(EBC) Labor Day Classic during
the Labor Day weekend at Bowler
City in Hackensack NJ. Tunison,
who picked up $2,500 for his
efforts, becomes the first handi-
cap bowler to win the title in the
scratch vs. handicap format,
defeating Ray Smarsh, who won
the Scratch Division and $1,250.
Tunison prevailed in a handicap
division that looked more like a
scratch division. With a low hand-
icap cut combined with a high
turnout of scratch bowlers,
Tunison had to get past a handicap
field that included 210+ average
bowlers Rick Warren, Tom Fojtlin
and James Cloud. Tunison does
that, escaping in the Handicap

ending his winning streak with
232.

Cheeks. Woody Jones, Rocky
Salermo, David Tucker, Doug
Herron, Ken Wright, James
Cloud, Dee McGee and Donna

Field.
With that caliber of bowlers
qualifying in the handicap divi-
sion, one would think the scratch
division would be a killer, and one
would be right. Joe Stillman's 780
led the qualifiers, while Doug
McFarlane, Frank Moran, and
Smarsh all shooting 760 or better
to get in. Both Stillman and Tom
Jordan shot 300's during qualify-
ing play, but it's Smarsh who gets
to the championship game,
defeating Johnathan Adams in the
Scratch finals. The other Scratch
Qualifiers were Justin Sloan,
Steve Aiello, Brian Sanders,
Mitch Sacks, Mark Duca and
Steve Tripp.
The champion, whose last
Asian victory was winning
the Team Gold medal at the
2003 World Championship in
Malaysia, ended a six year
drought to cap off the victory
and the top prize of 30 mil-
lion Korean won (approx.
US$24,850).
The runner-up had edged
American pro Wes Malott,
49-39 in the ninth and tenth
frame tie-breaker when both
were locked at 235 in the
third stepladder match to face
Mack in the title match.
Kim also eliminated anoth-
er American pro, Sean Rash,
243-215 in the second match
and fellow-countrymen, Kim
Young Kwan, 246-235 in the
first all-Korean stepladder match.
Duca had a busy day getting to
the Scratch Quarterfinals of the
EBC, but before he got there, he
won the Survivor Tournament,
knocking off Steve Koskinen, 9/
Vs. 8/. For winning, Duca takes
home an extra $250.

scratch division? Think you could
get into the handicap qualifiers?
Because of the high turnout to the
last tournament, the next tourna-
ment will be the weekend of
October 3rd-4th. It's a special
shortened mini 2-day tournament,
but the cash is still large - a guar-
anteed $1,500 for first place. The
squad times are 11:30 am, 1:30
pm, 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm on
Saturday, and 11am and 1pm on
Sunday.

USBC Hall of Fame Ceremony Set for U.S. Women’s Open

ARLINGTON, Texas – When members of the United States
Bowling Congress Hall of Fame class of 2010 are
enshrined, they will do so in a setting befitting the country's
major sports. That's because the 2010 induction ceremony
will be held outdoors May 12 at the International Bowling
Campus.
Inductions will take place in the afternoon before the live
stepladder finals for the U.S. Women's Open that evening
on the lanes of the International Training and Research
Center. That event will be broadcast on ESPN2.
"Our goals in moving the inductions to Arlington are to
spotlight the new International Bowling Museum and Hall
of Fame and International Bowling Campus while possibly
growing the event into something big every year," said
USBC Vice President-Media Pete Tredwell. "The inspira-
tion for this idea comes from the annual baseball and pro
football ceremonies. Those venues allow for large crowds
and major media coverage. Plus having it the same day as
the U.S. Women’s Open brings more focus to both events."
The 2010 event also will include a formal dinner in down-
town Fort Worth on May 11. Fans will be able to purchase
tickets to be with the new and past hall of famers and other
dignitaries with the proceeds going to the IBM/HF.
The Veterans and Meritorious Service part of the class of
2010 will be announced in November with the Superior
Performance inductees to follow in December or January.

bowling transcends people of all
ages.
That was so true on Sept 12th
when Maple Family Centers held
its Grand Re-Opening of Jib Lanes

Bowling Becomes Grand Again in Flushing

LaSpina. John LaSpina made a
few remarks about how good a
center is by treating the employees
as family. After that he asked
employees of his centers to come
out to the lanes for a curtain call.
The time came for the official
ribbon cutting ceremony where
John LaSpina’s 2 year old grand-
daughter, Grace McCarthy did the
honors.
The first of two first balls were
thrown by Mary Frisina, who just
turned 100 years-old and bowls
regularly at maple Lanes and gets
to the center via Access-A-Ride.
After being assisted to the foul
line, she proceeded to throw an 8
count. She was then presented
with a bouquet of flowers. To
show that anyone can bowl, no
matter what their age; John’s 2
year old grand daughter, Grace
threw out the 2nd ball. Using a
ramp, she too, knocked down 8
pins and was given flowers and a
gift for her participation in the fes-
tivities.
Presentations of plaques were
given to the LaSpina Family for
their Community Service.

Veterans Link).
To show how youth bowling is
very important in every LaSpina
center, one of the best youth
bowlers from their centers got to
bowl a challenge match with
Johnny Petraglia and Caroline
Dorin- Ballard.
During the matches, food was
served to those in attendance.
After the matches everyone was
invited to bowl at the newly chris-
tened center.
With more than 180 people in
attendance, the LaSpina family
announced that they have now
become proprietors of a sixth cen-
ter as Rockville Center joins the
family along with: Maple Lanes,
Gil Hodges Lanes, Jib Lanes,
Coram Lanes and Farmingdale
