Problem 1.

A 2300 V (terminal voltage), 1000 kVA, 0.8 PF lagging, 60-Hz, two pole, Y connected
synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 1.1 and an armature resistance
of 0.15 . At 60Hz, its friction and windage losses are 24 kW, and its core losses are
18 kW. The field circuit has a dc voltage of 200 V, and the maximum
f
I is 10 A. The
resistance of the field circuit is adjustable over the range from 20 to 200 . The
OCC curve (E
T
vs I
f
) of this generator is shown in the following figure.

(1) Input the OCC curve into a MatLab file.
(2) How much field current is required to make the terminal voltage equal to 2300 V
when the generator is running at no load?
(3) What is the internal generated voltage
A
E of this machine when the generator is
running at rated condition?
(4) How much field current is required when the generator is running at rated conditions?
(5) How much power and torque must the generator's prime mover be capable of
supplying?
(6) Construct a capability curve for this generator.

Problem 2.

Assume that the field current of the generator in Problem 1 has been adjusted to a value
of 4.5 A.
(1) What will the terminal voltage of this generator be if it is connected to a -connected
load with an impedance of 20 30 ?
(2) Sketch the phasor diagram of this generator.
(3) What is the efficiency of the generator at these conditions?
(4) Now assume that another identical -connected load is to be paralleled with the first
one. What is the new terminal voltage?
(5) What happens to the phasor diagram after the load has been added?
(6) What must be done to restore the terminal voltage to its original value?

Problem 3.

Assume that the field current of the generator in Problem 1 is adjusted to achieve rated
terminal voltage (2300 V) in each of the following questions:
(1) What is the efficiency of the generator at rated load?
(2) What is the voltage regulation of the generator at rated load?
(3) What is the voltage regulation of the generator if it is loaded to rated 1000 kVA with
0.8 PF leading load?
(4) What is the voltage regulation of the generator if it is loaded to rated 1000 kVA with
unity power factor load?
(5) Use MATLAB to plot the terminal voltage of the generator as a function of line
current from 0 to 250 A for all three power factors in (2) (4). For each case, assume
the field current (or open circuit voltage) is fixed.

Problem 4.

Assume that the field current of the generator in Problem 1 has been adjusted so that it
supplies rated voltage when loaded with rated current at unity power factor.
(1) What is the torque angle of the generator when supplying rated current at unity
power factor?
(2) When this generator is running at full load (1000 kW) with unity power factor, how
close is it to the static stability limit of the machine?

Problem 5.

3.8 kV, 10 MVA, 0.8 PF lagging, 60 Hz, two pole, Y connected steam turbine generator
has a synchronous reactance of 12 per phase and an armature resistance of 1.5 per
phase. This generator is operating in parallel with a large power system (infinite bus).
(1) What is the magnitude of
A
E at rated conditions?
(2) What is the torque angle of the generator at rated conditions?
(3) If the field current is constant, what is the maximum power possible out of this
generator? How much reserve power or torque does this generator have at full load?
(4) At the absolute maximum power possible, how much reactive power will this
generator be supplying or consuming? Sketch the corresponding phasor diagram.
(Assume
f
I is still unchanged.)

Problem 6.

A 400 kV, 60 Hz, -connected, 4 pole synchronous generator is rated 480 kVA at 0.8 PF
lagging. It has a synchronous reactance of 1.75 per phase. The prime mover power
limit is 430 kW.
(1) Sketch the capability curve for this generator, including the prime-mover power limit;
(2) Can this generator supply a line current of 0.64 A at 0.7 PF lagging? Why or why
not?
(3) What is the maximum amount of reactive power this generator can produce?
(4) If the generator supplied 300 kW real power, whats the maximum amount of reactive
power that can be simultaneously supplied?
