Actions (see both sheets)
1) Clanricare & Antrim to Oldbridge hamlet;
defend against Dutch Guards assault across river
2) Supported by remainder of Hamiltons infantry;
attack repulsed as Hugenots cross river
3) Immediately a series of Jacobite cavalry charges
begin, starting with 1 troop of Guards against the
Dutch Guards, followed by all the cavalry versus
the Guards and Hugenots, repeated against
Hanmers and Kirkes supporting forces. Hugenots
smashed; Schomberg killed rallying them.
4) The above Williamites severely disorganised and
can make no progress. They regroup while the
Danes cross; Danes now charged by Jacobites, who
drive of enemy Horse but cannot penetrate
chevaux-de-frise.
5) Clares and Dongans Dragoons meanwhile
watching Mill Ford.
6) King Williams attacking force, led by Ginkels
brigade, crosses at Mill Ford and drives away
Jacobite Dragoons; William engages counter-
attacking cavalry with his second wave
(mainly Ulstermen).
7) With the Jacobite cavalry of the feld or
exhausted, and the Jacobite infantry still rallying,
Tyrconnel orders a withdrawal to avoid
encirclement.

Williamite Batteries SIEGE of ATHLONE
1691
The sieges of Cork and Athlone
Cork & Athlone were two of the more important
sieges. The loss of the former cut a secure line
of communication that the Jacobites had enjoyed
with France.
Athlone was besieged by the Williamites twice, the
frst time only for a week, and without result. The second
siege saw the heaviest bombardment ever made in Ireland.
