The B310BDC (DC) Contour Probe is a very portable, battery operated instrument for
Magnetic Particle inspection. The instrument is intended for use where power is limited or
where operator safety is a concern.
BATTERY PACK: Power for the B310BDC is provided by the BP7 (7.2 Ah) or BP15 (14.4 Ah)
battery packs. Overload protection is provided by a replaceable 15A fuse in the BP7 Battery
Pack. A 15A self resetting fuse is used in the BP15 Battery Pack.
REPAIR: Repair of the B310BDC or either of the battery packs is limited and should not be
attempted. Units are sealed and should be returned to the factory for service.
INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION: The B310BDC Contour Probe derives its power from a
12VDC battery pack. The instrument is fitted with a ten foot power cord with a cigarette lighter
type plug. This plug is designed to be mated to the battery pack socket. The unit is energized
by a push button switch on the top of the unit.

FIG. 1
OPERATION: Basically, the B310BDC Contour Probe is an electromagnet producing a
strong DC magnetic field. Place the Probe legs upon the ferrous metal surface at a right
angle to the suspected defect. Push the test switch and lightly dust or float inspection powder
over the area being inspected. Defect indications will be revealed in a direction shown on
figure 2. Turn the Probe 90 degrees from the first test and repeat the procedure. The test
switch should be released only after the powder application. However, if excess powder is to
be lightly blown away, as is the procedure to reveal minute indications, the Probe should
remain energized while this procedure is performed. It should be noted that a DC field may
not in all instances, produce the same sensitivity to detect minute surface defect indications
that might otherwise be obtained with an AC field. A test standard should always be used to
verify sensitivity to detect the smallest rejectable application defect. The B310BDC will comply
with the DC weight lift test of 30 to 50 pounds. Occasional checks of the weight lift test should
be performed during testing.
BATTERY CHARGING: The BP7 battery pack should provide sufficient battery life to operate
the B310BDC for approximately eight hours of use. The BP15 battery pack should provide for
nearly double this use. Recharge either battery overnight only. Do not allow batteries to
remain on charge for longer periods.
The exclusive, reversible strain relief feature permits the B310BDC to be used in very
confined areas. The strain relief may be rotated to exit the top of the unit (figure 3) or conven-
tionally, from the rear (figure 4). With the B310BDC disconnected from the battery, remove
the four phillips-head screws holding the strain relief plate. Rotate the plate assembly around
being careful not to twist the wires more than once. Replace the plate assembly and four
screws.
Operating Environment: Temperature: 32 to 104F (0 to 40C). Relative humidity: 10% to
95%, non-condensing.
Shipping and Storage Environment: Temperature: -40 to 140F (-40 to 60C). Relative
humidity: 5% to 95%. Vibration and shock: As encountered in normal shipping and handling
with no degradation.
The instrument should be wiped clean with a general purpose cleaner after each use.
