Lectionary Readings
Sixth Sunday of Easter Color: White.
Acts 17:22-31. Paul visits Athens and takes the time to learn and understand its cul-
tural assumptions and icons. When he speaks publicly in the Areopagus, center of phi-
losophy and courts, he rhetorically repurposes these cultural assumptions and icons,
showing how they point to God's kingdom already at work and Jesus Christ as King
and risen Lord.
Psalm 66:8-20. Despite persecution and difficulty, the people of God continue to offer
themselves with thankful sacrifice, wherever they are.
1 Peter 3:13-22. Christ suffered and died for all people in all times and everywhere. So
wherever we are, we are to be ready to give an account for the hope that is us.
John 14:15-21. Jesus says he will give the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to be with and in
his disciples forever, wherever they go, always, everywhere.

Service & Sermon Notes

Welcome to Worship
elcome to New Hope Church, now into our third century serving God! If
you are visiting, you will discover a loving, spirit-filled church family. Here
is some helpful information as you join us in worship today:
- All who worship here are equals in the sight of God, regardless of race, age, gen-
der, physical disability or religious affiliation.
- Communion, when celebrated, is open to all who profess Christ as Lord and Sav-
ior, whether affiliated with this church or not. Children may partake of Commun-
ion as well, if parents approve.
- A nursery is available during the service; please see a greeter for directions. (This
is for infants and children up to 3 years of age.)
- Handicap-accessible restrooms are located off the narthex (main foyer) and adja-
cent to the entrance lobby in the Fellowship Hall/Gym.
- Please complete the tear-off attendance slip attached to the bulletin and drop it in
the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit with us today.
- Thank you for remembering to silence your cell phone during the service.
- We ask that there be no food or beverages in the sanctuary, please.
- If you arrived as a visitor we hope that you leave as a friend and worship with
us often!
New Hope Church exists to:
Glorify God in worship and rejoice in our life together;
Share the Good News of the Gospel in word and deed;
Reach as many as we can with the saving love of Jesus;
Help each person grow toward Christian maturity,
and find their place of service in the church and in the world.

Ministries/Activities Within Our Church
The Church Session will meet Tuesday evening May 27 at 6:30 in the confer-
ence room.
The next C.P.W. meeting will be Saturday May 31 in the office building. We
will plan the trip to the Thistle Farm in Nashville. Please let Mary Thompson
know if you would like to go.
Sunday June 1, Holy Communion in the Morning Worship service will be ob-
served.
The New Hope Mens Ministry will have its next monthly meeting on Satur-
day morning, June 7 at 8:30 a.m. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens
another. - Proverbs 27:17.
Sunday, June 8 is Pentecost Sunday. Everyone remember to where something
red in honor of the coming of the fire of the Holy Spirit!
Fathers Day is Sunday, June 15. The ladies of the church will be serving a
breakfast in honor of all the fathers and men in the church at 8:30. There will be
no Sunday School classes so that the whole church can fellowship together at
breakfast. Honor you father by being in church on Fathers Day!
Stephen Ministry - Got a burden? You dont have to carry that burden alone.
You can have a Stephen Minister who will spend time with you, listen to you,
and walk beside you. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving care
through the Stephen Ministry program at New Hope, please contact the pastor
through the Church office at (615) 449-7020 and request that a Stephen minister
contact you.
CHURCH CAMPS - Our New Hope Children will be attending two camps this
year at Crystal Springs Camp in Kelso, TN. Our first camp is Junior High
Camp for kids going into 7th, 8th and 9th grades. We will be leaving out for
this camp just after church on Sunday, June 8th and the kids will return home
on Friday, June 13th in the afternoon. The second camp is Junior Camp for
kids in Upper Elementary going into the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. We will also
be leaving out for this camp just after church on Sunday June 22nd and the kids
will return on Friday, June 27th in the afternoon. The cost of each camp is $85
for kids who attend New Hope Church and $170 if they have friends who want
to go but do not attend the church. If any child needs help in affording camp
please see the Youth Pastor Brad Unland or the Assistant to the Pastor Robbie
Haynes for more information. Every child needs to fill out health and camp reg-
istration forms and those can be picked up in the church office. The kids inter-
ested in camp will receive these forms this Sunday, May 4th during Children's
Church. Camp has opportunities for kids to worship together and grow in Christ.
They will also spend time swimming, fishing, making crafts, and eating (they
eat a lot at camp!). We hope our kids are getting excited about this summer and
all the great experiences they can explore. Contact Brad for details: e-mail:

Worship Scripture References
The Sabbath Principle Taught in Scripture
Genesis 2:2-3
2
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh
day he rested from all his work.
3
Then God blessed the seventh day and made it
holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Exodus 20:9-11
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
9
Six days you shall labor and do
all your work,
10
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you
shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or fe-
male servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.
11
For in six
days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he
rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it
holy.

Mark 2:27
Then He said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Sabbath is mentioned 154 times in the Bible
The one in seven rest cycle is rooted in the natural order
Jesus refined the true purpose in the Sabbath principle
Why Sunday is observed as Sabbath among most Christians
How the principle affects ordinary living today

The Lectionary Gospel Lesson
This Scripture talks about the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and the love
between God and us and the love relation we have with each other.
The Sabbath principle and the nature of love work together.

John 14:15-21

15
If you love me, keep my commands.
16
And I will ask the Father, and he will give
you another advocate to help you and be with you forever
17
the Spirit of truth. The
world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know
him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18
I will not leave you as orphans; I will
come to you.
19
Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.
Because I live, you also will live.
20
On that day you will realize that I am in my Fa-
ther, and you are in me, and I am in you.
21
Whoever has my commands and keeps
them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,
and I too will love them and show myself to them.

Thought for the Week
ernon McGee tells this story about a man who wanted to argue about the Sab-
bath. The man said, "I'll give you $100 if you will show me where the Sabbath
day has been changed." McGee answered, "I don't think it has been changed.
Saturday is Saturday, it is the seventh say of the week, and it is the Sabbath day. I
realize our calendar has been adjusted, and can be off a few days, but we won't even
consider that point. The seventh day is still Saturday, and it is still the Sabbath day."
He got a gleam in his eye and said, "Then why don't you keep the Sabbath day if it
hasn't been changed?" McGee answered, "the DAY hasn't changed, but I have been
changed. I've been given a new nature now, I am joined to Christ; I am a part of the
new creation. We celebrate the first day because that is the day He rose from the
grave." That is what it means that the ordinances have been nailed to the cross, Colo-
sians 2:14. - J. Vernon McGee.
