1. Plan A Type A (2) is conducted in official days from Mondays to Fridays.
2. Plan B is conducted on weekends or off official hours (evenings).

2. Philosophy and Objectives

2.1 Philosophy
Develop leadership in critical thinking, planning, administration, designing
strategies of development, and expertise in the science of population education.
Ability to seek and create new bodies of knowledge. Application of knowledge and
national power, which include powers of socio-psychology, economy, environmental
resources, geography, culture and folk wisdom, politics, military, science and technology,
information and others. Having morality and ethics up to the standard of the learned society.

2.2 Objectives

The objective of Plan A Type A (2) is to produce academicians who:
2.2.1 are well-rounded on population phenomena in both micro and macro
perspectives and on Thai and global societies multidisciplinarily, and able to seek and
create bodies of knowledge on population education and use them for the benefits of
developments in all social sectors, particularly population quality development.
2.2.2 have an ability to research, plan and design strategies for population quality
development by utilizing research processes and processes for innovative thinking
development.
2.2.3 possess morality and ethics, responsibilities, and determination to develop
and solve population problems appropriate to circumstances and social needs at all levels.

The objective of Plan B is to produce academicians who:
2.2.1 are well-rounded on population phenomena in both micro and macro
perspectives and on Thai and global societies multidisciplinarily, and able to seek and
create bodies of knowledge on population education and use them for the benefits of
developments in all social sectors, particularly population quality development.

2.2.2 have an ability in managing, planning and designing strategies for
population quality development by applying their knowledge from courses taken in class.
2.2.3 possess morality and ethics, responsibilities, and determination to develop
and solve population problems appropriate to circumstances and social needs at all levels.

3. Admission Requirements and Selection Methods
3.1 To be qualified for admission to Plan A Type A (2), an applicant must:
3.1.1 Hold a B. A. in any field from prestigious institutions of higher learning
recognized by Mahidol University.
3.1.2 Have a GPA of at least 2.50. In case of lower GPA, at least 3-year working
experience in related fields is required.
3.1.3 Be qualified according to the needs of the Programme Committee and the
Faculty of Graduate Studies as specified in the Announcement of Application.
3.1.4 Those with qualifications besides what are stated above may be taken into
consideration by the Programme Committee in conjunction with the Faculty of Graduate
Studies, Mahidol University.

3.2 To be qualified for admission to Plan B, an applicant must:
3.2.1 Hold a B. A. in any field from educational institutions recognized by the
Office of Civil Service Commission.
3.2.2 Have a GPA of at least 2.50 and a 3-year working experience in related
fields, and a 5-year working experience in relate field if a GPA is lower than 2.50.
3.2.3 Be qualified according to the needs of the Programme Committee and the
Faculty of Graduate Studies as specified in the Announcement of Application.
3.2.4 Those with qualifications besides what are stated above may be taken into
consideration by the Programme Committee in conjunction with the Faculty of Graduate
Studies, Mahidol University.

3.3 Selection Method
Written and oral examinations or other methods specified by the Programme
Committee.

4. Academic System
semester system

5. Duration of Study
Not exceeding 5 academic years.

6. Registration
Plan A Type A (2)
A full-time enrollment is required. Each semester, no more than 15 credits are
enrolled or according to the advice of advisors.
Plan B
Students are required to enroll no more than 12 credits/semester or according to the
advice of advisors.

7. Evaluation and Graduation Requirements

7.1 Evaluation
Evaluation is according to the regulations on education of higher learning set up by
Mahidol University.

7.2 Graduation Requirements
7.2.1 Plan A Type A (2)
To be qualified for graduation, students must:
(1) Have a full-time study not exceeding 5 academic years.
(2) Complete at least 45 credits: 27 credits of course work and 15 credits for
thesis, with a GPA of no less than 3.00.
(3) Pass an English examination as required by the Faculty of Graduate
Studies, Mahidol University.
(4) Pass an oral defense of Thesis.

7.2.2 Plan B
To be qualified for graduation, students must:
(1) Have a study not exceeding 5 academic years.
(2) Complete at least 45 credits: 39 credits of course work and 6 credits for
independent study, with a GPA of at least 3.00.
(3) Pass an English examination as required by the Faculty of Graduate
Studies, Mahidol University.
(4) Pass an oral defense of thematic paper as required by the University
regulations on education of higher learning.

Plan A Type (2)
The expenditure for each student is approximately 60,000 baht/year and the regular
budget sources are from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of
Graduate Studies.

Plan A Type A (2) and Plan B
The expenditure for each student is approximately 90,000 baht/year and the
program administration is based on self-reliance.

Interdisciplinary analysis of demographic changes, facts and phenomena on
the micro and macro perspectives, difference of demographic variables based on
concepts and theories of demography, population policies, and factors determining
differences of population size; rate of population growth, demographic
components and structure; patterns of sexual reproduction, death and migration
with an emphasis on importance and relationship between demographic factors and
political, economic, social, technological and resource factors in order to instill
responsibility to tackle demographic and demographic quality development
problems.

SHPE 512 Social and Economics Theories for Population 3 (3-0)
Development

Economics, Sociology, Social-psychology and Anthropology Theories related to
decision-making models on population; population behavior; discussion and prediction of
demographic phenomena; application of theories to develop research on population quality
development and theory construction.

SHPE 513 Population Quality Development: Macro Perspectives 3 (2-3)
Seeking and analyzing various data at a macro level, for instance, data on
potentiality of population, economy, society, psychology, culture, politics,
military, technology, environment, free trade, competition in world market, and
global trends. Data are analyzed by using different techniques in addition to data at
a micro level in order to define strategies and goals of population quality needed to
be developed at a macro level.

SHPE 514 Population Quality Development: Micro Perspectives 3 (2-3)
Seeking and analyzing various data at a micro level in present and future
social circumstances in both short and long terms in addition to data at a macro
level in order to define goals of population quality in a micro level; analyzing and
defining strategic plans at a micro level to meet the specified goals.

SHPE 515 Population Education Research Strategies and Tactics 3 (2-3)
Analyses of problems and weaknesses stemming from defining a conceptual
framework and variables; research processes; reliability and validity of research
instrument; levels of measurement; research designs; errors in applying statistics; methods
of presenting and interpreting data; means to reduce problems and weaknesses; techniques
of presenting and applying research findings.

SHPE 516 Advanced population Education Research Strategies and 3 (2-3)
Tactics
Analyzing and discussing problems and weaknesses stemming from
research conceptual framework and defining variables; developing instrument to
measure indicators; social and demographic measurement scales; techniques to
develop instrument to increase level of measurement; tactics to use instrument
efficiently; utilizing statistic concepts, theories and principles to deal with data not
in line with conceptual framework and assumptions; analyzing strengths and
weaknesses of population education research tactics and finding out solutions;
applying research findings to solve problems and population quality development;
practicum in evaluating and improving research projects.

SHPE 519 Advanced Population Education 3 (2-3)
Prerequisites: SHPE 511 and SHPE 512
Lectures and practices to analyze strategies in thinking, decision-making,
planning, defining visions and population policies in different circumstances and
social levels; projects to solve population problems at different levels; creation and
development of bodies of knowledge and theories which could be applied in actual
situations in communities at the micro and macro levels that are related to social,
cultural and economic development, resources, and technologies, based on socio-
culture and responsibilities for all human beings.

SHPE 521 Human Resources Development 3 (2-3)
Principles, concepts and theories on development and significance of human
resources toward national developments, based on various sciences; planning guidelines
for human resources development based particularly on educational and training
measures; utilization of developed guidelines for the effectiveness and efficiency of
national development.

SHPE 522 Population Management and Administration 3 (2-3)
Lectures and practices to develop efficient patterns of human resources
management and administration; quality development; supervision and psychology;
models of population management and administration; morality and ethics for
occupation and livelihood; monitorship of population changes; population migration
favorable to development; planning and policy proposals to utilize population resources
for the utmost benefits in the development of human society; acceptance and respects
to laws and regulations; instillation of disciplines in the population.

SHPE 523 Population and Development 3 (3-0)
An in-depth study on the relationship between demographic factors and directions
of social, economic and political development, resources, and technologies; Demography &
Development Model with an emphasis on interactions between demographic factors and
population quality development, social, economic and political development, and the
development of resources and technologies. Emphasis is put on demographic factors that
determine developments, which could be explained in-depth and broadly by theories.

SHPE 524 Population and Quality of Life Development
Lectures and practices to study the relationship between demographic factors and
life-quality developments at individual, family, community and social levels; emphasis on
rights and demographic factors that determine the possibility to develop the life quality of
an individual, a family and a society; studying and developing indicators of life quality;
models for population quality development in different social, cultural and political
contexts; proposal of possible guidelines to develop the quality of life for the sustainable
maintenance of the society with reference to social, religious, political and cultural
institutions, identity, and folk wisdom; emphasis is placed on life-quality development in
terms of employment, livelihood in a socio-environment, good health and good citizenship.

SHPE 525 Demographic Analysis 3 (3-0)
A study on demographic data sources, data collection, examination and
correction of data, and measurement and analysis of demographic phenomena including
size, components, geographic distribution, death, sexual reproduction, marriage, migration,
approximation of population size, and projection of the population; application of computer
softwares to analyze demographic data.

SHPE 531 Population Psychology 3 (2-3)
Psychological concepts and theories related to population; geographic distribution;
components of population; analysis of demographic decisions and behaviors with regard to
sexual reproduction and migration; application of psychological concepts and theories to
explain and understand states and behaviors of the population in different societies.

SHPE 532 Population and Public Health Planning and Development 3 (2-3)
Lectures and practices on strategies in planning, coordination, operating and
evaluating public health plans by employing both qualitative and quantitative demographic
factors at micro and macro levels to determine efficient public health planning
organization.

SHPE 534 AIDS Education 3 (2-3)
A study of occurrences, causes and implications of the disease in the past, present
and future, with an emphasis on human factors; An investigation of educational concepts,
theories and processes in the past, present and future as a foundation for population
education analysis; opinions on past and present AIDS education; alternative educational
patterns and guidelines to make the educational system develop behaviors in preventing
and solving AIDS problems effectively.

SHPE 536 Drugs Addicted Education 3 (2-3)
A study of an epidemic of different narcotic substances, dangers, violence, risk
behavior and implications on individual, family, community, society, social institutions,
economy, politics, and development. Concepts, theories and patterns of effective
prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and behavioral changes. Application of concepts,
theories, religious teachings, social and cultural structures, and participation of family,
community and non-governmental organizations as new alternatives for individuals,
families and societies to be drug-free.

SHPE 591 Seminar 3 (1-6)
Emphasis is placed on seminar organization and presentation of concept, theories,
strategies, models and research findings on population, population education and other
related fields. Analysis, synthesis and criticism with specialists to increase or gain
experience, visions, and paradigms of thoughts in order to raise academic level of the field;
problem-solving and population quality development; organization of seminars to exchange
knowledge in order to respond to current topics of interest with other educational
institutions or agencies both locally and internationally.

SHPE 595 Independent Studies 3 (1-6)
To study, analyze and synthesize topics or case studies of personal interest in
population and then synthesize them into models or programs that reflect study findings
and apply them to real situations. Topics under investigation are specified by advisors or
the Board of the Program.

SHPE 599 Research Project 6 (0-24)
A thematic paper by studying concepts, theories, models and case studies from
related documents or primary or secondary data, analyzing them, summarizing the findings
and making recommendations for further application.

SHPE 698 Research M. A. Thesis 15 (0-45)
Defining a research model, conceptual framework, methodology, data collection
and analysis, interpretation and discussions, and presentation of the research findings. The
research could be either qualitative or quantitative or both, and the data could also be
primary, secondary or from literature.

15. Quality Assurance

1) The Programme will evaluate itself by processing Self-Study Report (SSR) and
Self-Assessment Report (SAR). In addition, the Programme Committee will meet
regularly and at least once in each Academic Year to evaluate the Programme. The
evaluation will include an analysis of the number of enquiries about the Programme
made by prospective candidates, the number of new enrolments, the number of
candidates graduating from the programme, the place of origin of Candidates, and
any other information which the Committee agrees is important in evaluating the
success of the Programme.

2) Graduating candidates will be invited to submit an evaluation of the strengths
and weaknesses of the Programme of the Committee.
3) The Programme Committee will encourage and help Supervisors develop their
Supervisory skills through workshops and information seminars.
