NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

Introduction:
The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is a globally
recognised qualification offered by an established independent UK examination board with over
30 years' experience in providing health and safety awards in the UK and across the world
including the Middle East, the West Indies and Southeast Asia.
What kind of people take the NEBOSH International General Certificate?
Managers, supervisors and employees based outside the UK who require a broad knowledge
and understanding of health and safety principles and practices. The qualification focuses on
international standards and management systems, enabling candidates to effectively discharge
workplace health and safety responsibilities in any employment sector, in all parts of the
world. The NEBOSH International General Certificate is also suitable for those embarking on a
career in health and safety, providing a sound basis for progression on to the NEBOSH
International Diploma.
Is this qualification recognised?
The International General Certificate qualification meets the academic requirements for
Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety
Management (IIRSM).
What does the qualification cover?
The NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) covers the principles relating to health and
safety, identification and control of workplace hazards and the practical application of this
knowledge. The IGC syllabus takes a risk management approach based on best practice and
international standards, such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes of
practice. Local laws and cultural factors may form part of the study programme where relevant
and appropriate.
The International General Certificate is also suitable for those embarking on a career in health
and safety, providing a valuable foundation for further professional study.
No previous health and safety knowledge is required. However it should be noted that the
examination is offered, and must be answered, in English, and that the course includes a
requirement to write a short report, which must also be in English. NEBOSH recommends that
candidates undertaking the NEBOSH International General Certificate should reach the
equivalent of a scoring of 6.0 or higher under the International English Language Testing System
(IELTS).

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
Management of international health and safety (IGC1)
Control of international workplace hazards (IGC2)
International health and safety practical application (IGC3)-
Pass requirements:
Pass the IGC1 & IGC2 examinations at the end of the course, and the report for IGC3.
Duration: 7 week part-time mode of delivery (12 training days+ exam day)
Venue: To be agreed ( training hall in a hotel in Muscat)
Fees: 900 OMR
Time table and course delivery: The course includes the following activities:
-12 days of face to face tutorial training and group discussion with Arabic support,
- Tutored distance learning sessions including answering ex-NEBOSH questions and
providing individual online feedback for candidates on their answers.
- Two mock exams and feedback sessions + the actual examination day,
- Guidance on exam techniques, past exam questions/answers and pre-exam revision,
- Discussions and guidance on examiners reports of past exams,
- Guidance on IGC3 International health and safety practical application
- Technical language support (English-Arabic)

Structure : The syllabus is divided into 3 units. Each of the first two units is further divided into
a number of elements:
Unit IGC1 Management of international health and safety
1. Foundations in health & safety
2. Policy
3. Organising for health & safety
4. Promoting a positive health & safety culture
5. Risk assessment
6. Principles of control
7. Monitoring, review and audit
8. Occupational incident and accident investigation, recording and reporting


Unit IGC2 Control of international workplace hazards

1. Movement of people and vehicles hazards and control
2. Manual and mechanical handling hazards and control
3. Working equipment hazards and Control
4. Electrical hazards and control
5. Fire hazards and control
6. Chemical and biological health hazards and control
7. Physical and psychological health hazards and control
8. Construction activities - hazards and control


Unit IGC3 International health and safety practical application

Purpose and Aim

The aim of this unit is to assess a candidates ability to complete successfully two activities:

To carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common
hazards, deciding whether they are adequately controlled and, where necessary,
suggesting appropriate and cost effective remedial action

To prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate action,
explaining why such action is needed (including reference to possible breaches of
legislation) and identifying, with due consideration of reasonable practicability, the
remedial measures that should be implemented.

Note:
Unit IGC3 is not normally offered independently of the taught elements. Students will normally be
required to complete the IGC3 assessment within 14 days (before or after) of sitting the
examination for Units IGC1 and/or IGC2. Completion of study for both IGC1 and IGC2 is
recommended in order to undertake the practical application unit (IGC3).
