STRUCTURED QUESTION
1 A compound Z containing carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen only, was analysed. 0.1 g of the
compound Z on combustion gave 0.228 g carbon dioxide and 0.124 g water. On reduction
of the compound, all the nitrogen in Z was converted to ammonia. It was found that 0.1 g
of the compound Z produced ammonia equivalent to 17.2 cm

acid when titrated.
(a) How many moles of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen are there in 0.1 g of the compound?
(b) Determine the empirical formula of the compound Z.
(c) The relative molecular mass of the compound was found to be 116. Determine the
molecular formula of Z.
(d) The compound Z dissolves readily in acid. Suggest a functional group in compound
Z.
ESSAY QUESTION
1 (a) Explain why ethanoic acid is soluble in water but benzoic acid is insoluble in water.
(b) (i) Which is more reactive, ethyne (C
2
H
2
) or nitrogen? Give an example to illustrate
your answer.
(ii) Explain your answer in terms of chemical bonding.

(ii) Both ethyne and nitrogen contain triple bonds (one s bond and two p bonds). The p bond
is weaker than the s bond.
When ethyne reacts with hydrogen, two p bonds are broken. But for nitrogen to react with
hydrogen, three bonds (one s bond and two p bonds) must be broken. Hence much more
energy is needed to break a stronger triple bond (N N) in the nitrogen molecule.
This causes nitrogen to be unreactive.
