The Healthy not Hungry mobile phone application
Introduction

Social media websites are used by millions of people, photos are shared easily and
quickly resulting in many positive and negative effects. A negative effect is that
photos, blogs and forum posts relating to eating disorders can be shared
uncontrollably, glamorising and encouraging eating disorders. The solution is to
create the Healthy not Hungy app. This app will provide people with correct
nutritional information and safe diet methods. The user will use the app to take a
photo of their meal, the meal goes through photo recognition and the users daily
intakes are tracked. This app will be used as a fun interactive way for the users to
document their daily meal intakes and the app will monitor the users progession.
This service will provide education that helps the user to reach their goal weight in a
healthy way.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To provide an easy and fun way to learn about nutritional information and monitor
weight change, in order to help those who struggle to maintain a healthy weight.
3.2 Industry Analysis
The New Zealand Health & Fitness mobile phone application industry
Force High/
Low:
Justification

Buyer power: High Buyers have many options such as going to a nutritionist,
dietician or using a diet app. Hundreds of diet apps are
available on the Google play store and the iTunes store,
many of which are free. It is easy for a buyer to change
which app they are using usually at no cost, or very little
cost. (Google Play, 2014)
Supplier
power:
Low There are many New Zealand businesses that we can
choose from to develop the app. The website iStart lists
New Zealand companies that businesses can use to
develop software for them. For example Smudge apps,
Paperkite and CactusLab. (iStart, 2014)
Threat of new
entrants:
High Apps can be made at a low cost, and new apps enter the
market very quickly. App La Carte offers a premium app
making service at a low cost. This app can be made for a
business for under $1000 and will be ready to use in 5 to
10 working days, as this is how long the app submission
for Apple takes.
(Stuff, 2012)
Threat of
substitutes:
Low Unlike other dieting apps the Healthy not Hungry app
focuses on helping the user to reach daily intake goals,
monitoring their meals in a fun way and providing easy to
understand nutritional information. This service is more
like having a trained nutritionist on hand for a fraction of
the price. Mission Nutrition offers nutritional and diet
advice that is priced from $89+ a month. (Mission nutrition,
2014)
Rivalry
among
existing
competitors:
Low Currently there are no other apps like the Healthy not
Hungry app which focuses on reaching a healthy weight,
for those that are either underweight or overweight. The
diet apps on the market focus on calorie counting and diet
tracking in order to lose weight no matter what size you
are. (iTunes, 2014)
Overall attractiveness of the industry:

Buyer power and threat of new entrants is high. Customers have a variety of different
health services smartphone apps to choose from. Supplier power, threat of
substitutes and rivalry among existing competitors are low. There are many app
services to choose from that can create the Healthy not Hungry app at a low cost.
Professional nutritionists and dieticians are an expensive alternative to an app which
also has the benefit of providing the user with information and help at the touch of
their fingertips. There are currently no existing app competitors we are not competing
with diet and weight loss apps, as diet apps are designed to help users reach their
perfect weight not necessarily a healthy weight.
3.3 Customers and their needs

Females represent about 90% of all eating disorders. The average age that an
eating disorder begins is about 17 years, however the average age has been
dropping. For females aged 15 to 24 years anorexia and bulimia are the third most
common chronic illnesses. (Eating Disorders Association of New Zealand, n.d.)
Diets that cut out a large number of good groups can result in quick weight loss, but
are unlikely to be a long term solution and are hard to maintain for the long term.
These diets may also be putting people at risk nutritionally as they may be low in
fibre, vitamins and minerals. (NZ Nutrition Foundation, 2014)
Target market: Females aged 15 to 25 years.
3.4 How this product fulfils the customers needs

The aim of Healthy not Hungry app is to help the user reach a healthy weight,
whether this means the user needs to gain or lose weight. This app will encourage
healthy well balanced meals that reach daily targets of essential good nutrients,
protiens and fats. Unlike other dieting apps this app will encourage users to reach
daily goals by eating more nutritional foods and factos in physical activity, rather than
focusing on fad diets that cut out many food groups.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Suppliers: 1) NZ Nutrition Foundation: In order to provide nutritional information to
our customers we will need to conduct a great amount of research on
food and nutrition. NZ Nutrition Foundation can supply us with this
information that is specific to our Kiwi customers.
2) Smudge mobile phone application developers is a New Zealand
business based in Christchurch whose focus is on quality and crafting
intuition.
Partners: 1) iTunes app store: We will work with the apple iTunes app store who
will distribute our app to sell to our users with an apple device.
2) Google play store: We will work with the Google play store who will
distribute our app to users with an android device.
3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost

This app is focused on people who are currently at an unhealthy weight. The
Healthy not Hungry app is designed to help these people reach a healthy weight
that they can sustain. The user will gain nutritional and diet knowledge that will help
them now and in the future. This app is being sold at a low cost and is an affordable
solution to peoples weight struggles. The app therefore follows the Focused Low
Cost strategy.
3.7 Value Chain Activity

Technology development (and R&D) is the most important value chain activity for my
business. In order to provide our customers with a fun and easy way to learn about
nutritional information and monitor weight change, we will need an extensive amount
of research on nutritional and diet information. The app must be easy to use and of a
high standard in order to accurately give specific nutritional, and diet information to
each customer.
3.8. Business Processes

Business process 1: Diet recommendation process

We will need to identify what diet plan the customer is requiring, whether they need
to gain weight or they need to lose weight. This process will calculate the users body
mass index (BMI) and categorise the user into either an underweight category, or an
overweight category. This process will be used so that the correct diet information
will be given to the user.

Business process 2: Daily intake recommendation process

The daily intake goals need to be specific to each customer and tailored to their
physical needs. This process if very important for us to be able to give our customers
specific daily intake goals, in order to satisfy their nutritional needs while also
reaching their goal weight.

3.9. Functionalities

Business process 1 functionalities:
1. App calculates the users BMI.
2. App determines which diet plan the user should be on depending on BMI.
Business process 2 functionalities:
1. App formulates daily intake goals.
2. App creates daily meal plan specific to the daily intake goals.
3.10. Systems

1. BMI calculating system is an important system as it will identify what category the
user is in (underweight or overweight). The BMI calculated using this system is
critical for the app to be able to identify correctly what diet the user should be put on.
2. Nutritional daily intake calculating system is an essential part of the app in order to
identify the correct daily intake goals for each user. This is a major component as the
user will need specific and correct intake goals in order to satisfy their bodys
nutritional needs.
3. The Meal planning system will help our customers reach their goal of a healthy
weight. Supplying daily intake goals is not enough to help the users reach their
nutritional and weight goals. We must supply them with suitable meal plans that are
specific to their needs so that they can achieve their goal of a healthy weight.
