"One week Workshop on Chromatography and Spectroscopy" for Teachers of Mumbai University areas from Monday, June 2 - Saturday, June 7, 2014. Chromatography and spectroscopy are the pillars of chemical analysis and is like an axle on which the chemical industries revolve. While these subjects are dealt in theoretical classes majority of the students do not have an opportunity or access to familiarize these students with instruments during their college days.

Excellence being its hall mark, the institution has always strived to instill values and practice. From basic sciences and arts to high-end technology, SIES has played host to some of the most eminent personalities. Chromatography and spectroscopy are the pillars of chemical analysis and is like an axle on which the chemical industries revolve; this alone can be the reason that these topics are taught at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of biological sciences and engineering. While these subjects are dealt in theoretical classes majority of the students do not have an opportunity or access to familiarize these students with instruments during their academic years in the college. When the students face the challenge of working with these instruments in their research career or industry jobs, they would definitely feel that it would have been better for them to have seen and worked with these instruments during their college days. It is also felt that the teachers, who are teaching these subjects also would like to have some contact time with these instruments so that they have sufficient practical experience to teach these modules quite effectively to students. The SIES Institute of Chromatography and Spectroscopy is a new star born under the SIES umbrella recently and the tall aim of this institute is to provide detailed theoretical education and training for both students and teachers. It is also intended to give education and training for the chemists from the industry, who would require such training. The objective of the present workshop is to provide one week training for the teachers of Mumbai University areas, who would be interested in getting hands on experience with various chromatographic and spectroscopic instruments. Taking into consideration the importance of this workshop, Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT) and Chromatographic Society of India (CSI) have decided to support this training both morally and financially, thus subsidizing the course of the teachers. The number of participants for this workshop will be restricted to 24, as hands-on training will be difficult for a larger audience. The seven days programme is accommodated into 6 days schedule by extending the number of working hours each day thus not compromising on any of the theoretical or practical contents. The topics are selected based on the B.Sc. and M.Sc. syllabi of the Mumbai University. The instructors of the course are well versed with the respective techniques and are selected from the academia, instrument companies and the chemical industry. The details of the course are given on page 3 and pictures that speak of the facilities are given on page 4 of this brochure. The course for the entire duration of 6 days will be Rs. 4500 only; this is expected to meet with expenses such as lunch, snacks, tea, hand outs and laboratory consumables. On completion of the course participants will be given a certificate for completing the course satisfactorily. The details of registration and payment are included in the separate registration form.
