OVERALL ANALYSIS FOR OUR DESIGNED
DRAIN FILTRATION SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
In the world today, environemtal pollution became a major problem to effect our life.
People created a large amount of rubbish everyday, Some of them are flow through our
storm water drains to the sea which will may impact marine life being harmed and water
polluted. Our company redesigned draining system which can stop rubbish from getting to
the sea and improve our countrys aspect by being green and clean.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To design a drain filtration system to stop rubbish from getting to the sea and collect the
data from the amount of rubbish for research and educational purposes to prevent
environmental pollution.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Drain filtration system manufacturing industry
Industry: Drain filtration system manufacturing industry.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low Only drain filtration system can stop rubbish from
getting to the sea. Buyer cant get this system
from somewhere else. Auckland council owns
stormwater system which can stop stormwater
from getting into the sea, however, it cant stop
any rubbish from getting into the sea. So the
buyer power is low because they dont have
alternatives if they want stop rubbish.

3
(Stormwater and your home, 2014)
Supplier power: Low Dain filtration system is made of some materials
such as porous nickel, Monel metal and steel
which are easy to find. There are a large amount
of suppliers can offer these materials. So the
supplier power is low because the company has
too many alternatives to choose which one they
could buy from. (Liu and Liang, 2001)
Threat of new entrants: High There are low entry barriers because the
technology to scan, capture data and send a
signal already exists. The diagram in Soild and
liquid seperation technology shows how filter
works, and the cost wont too much. So the
threat of new entrants is high. (Rushton, Ward
and Holdich, 2008)
Threat of substitutes: High There are some similar products already exist
before drain filtration system created. There is
already a water filter system has been created,
for example, a slow sand filter that stop polluted
water by flowing through sand which can makes
water change to be more clear. (Caldwell and
Hodges, 2011)
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low Lots of competitors already exist in this market.
For example, Stormdrain curb-inlet multi-stage
filtration already exists which can stop storm
water from getting into the sea. However, there is
no Filtration system industry can provide the

4
product which can stop the rubbish from getting
to the sea and including sensor to send signal and
collect data for educational purpose. (Fox and
McClure, 2006)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: This is an attractive industry from above analysis.
Even though the Low entry barriers can make this market to be less competitive, but this
newly product is the first one can stop rubbish from getting into the sea. Also no product
can cleaning up the inside rubbish which is used likely to flowing to the seawater through
drain and collect data to indicate citizens.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
City Council was the local government authority which represents the city of local area. They
may need drain filtration system to prevent seawater pollution. In New Zealand, there are
large number of cities have sea nearby. Like the port of Tauranga is the NZs largest port
with high value of export marine. They need high quality of seafood to maintain a
competitive advantage in this market. Tauranga city council may needs adopt drain filtration
system to cleaning up rubbish from entering drains and gain a good reputation with high
quality seafood products.
3.4 The Product and Service
Our product is to stop rubbish from entering drains to ensure the quality of seawater is
enough clean and non-polluted by these contaminants. It helps city maintain a green and
clean image which promotes the development of tourism and to avoid marine life are
consuming the plastic pieces and getting sick. Our filtering drain will be installed at the
conjunction of the drains and the rubbish from getting in the drain will be removed by
means of a fine physical barrier to achieve a high quality of seawater. Also, there is a sensor
on the filter will be signal the operator when the filter is full and will automatically replaced
by anoher filter.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners

5
There are a large number of suppliers can offer the materials drain filtration system needs.
Materials like steel, metal, iron and plastic can buy from retail hardware stores or
warehouse. They can became one of our suppliers. If we install drain filtration system in
Auckland, local government can be our partner, this is because the amount of rubbish will
be collected and processed, then stored in the system, the government can public the
analysised data to the citizens for educational purpose.
3.6 Strategy: Focused on high cost
Drain filtration system is a high cost industry. The making process involved advanced
technology and sensor inside. It needs different hardware materials to made of. The cost of
production will be high. Its also focus on narrow market as there are a few manufacturers
are availble for sale it and a low number of buyers to consume it.
The overall strategy is therefore Focused on high cost.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Make the product or service
The most important value chain activity for this business is Make the product or service.
Our aim is to produce a new drian filtration system which helps city council to maintain
clean and pure seawater. Make the product and service is the most important value chain
activitiy for our industry. Make sure our product has a good quality and helps city to keep a
green and clean image.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. SENSOR MAKING PROCESS The poducer will get materials from supplier first, there is
a department called warehouse, they have a materials management system which helps
them to gathering and managing materials, then design a sensor model which can detect if
the filter is full. After this product has been created, test if it works.

3.8.2. DRAIN FILTRATI ON SYSTEM TESTING PROCESS After the sensor has been made, put it
in the filtration drain, there is a department called data warehouse which controls seawater
filtration system to make sure the data has been sent to sendor correctly. There are two
steps need to be tested. One is check if the signal sent to the operator when the filter is full,

7
another one is check if the filter has been replaced by another filter after its full. Then
finished after it shows yes.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. SENSOR MAKING PROCESS
To detect when the filter is full
Send a signal to the operator along with the data of the amount of rubbish
had been collected
3.9.2. DRAIN FILTRATI ON SYSTEM TESTING PROCESS
To stop rubbish from getting to the sea
To ensure drain filtration system runs well
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. MATERI ALS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM The product is made of different materials, we
need to gather them from warehouse or retail hardware store to make it. Materials
management system helps to identify which materials we need, how much are they cost
and what will we going to do with these materials.
3.10. 2. DATA ANALYSI S SYSTEM During the operating process, the data has been sent to
the operator after the amount of rubbish had been collected. The system will analysis data
automatically.
3.10. 3. SEAWATER FI LTRATION SYSTEM It can stop any rubbish from getting into the sea,
and this system is designed to physically block any substances and letting filtered water
flowing through the drain. It will maintain the water is clean and clear image.

CONCLUSION
Overall, our bussiness idea is to create a clean and clear seawater to ensure marine life will
be safe and we can consume the healthy seafood. Drain filtration system helps us to achieve
this goal and the information technology such us sensor making and electronic filter system
makes it being reality in daily life.
