Warm-up: T. greets the Ss and asks them about their last holiday.
Presentation: Review of functions responding to good and bad
news
T: Can you give me some expressions we use to respond to bad or
good news?
S: Sorry to hear that/ sounds great/ My goodness/Superb/Are you
kidding? / I cant believe it/ Really?/ incredible!
T: suppose that you have knocked several times on your friends
door. Nobody answered you. What can you deduce? Is he at home?
S1: no
T: what can you say? Use must.
S2: he must be out.
T: what can you say? Use may, might, can, could.
S3: He may be in the caf.
S4: He might have gone to the stadium.
S5: He could be in the office.
T writes down the students contributions on the BB, then asks the
students :
T: what does the first sentence express? Are you sure or not?
S1: certainty.
T: what do the other three sentences express? Are you sure?
S2: uncertainty.
There are other expressions of certainty and uncertainty. Ss
study the phrases used to express certainty and uncertainty
and fill in the following table: [ex. 1, page 131]
