Description

This course provides an introduction to the key elements of the Language A: Language and
Literature course. While the course can conceivable be understood and taught by studying the
Language and Literature Subject Guide this course is meant to help participants find information
more !uickly make informed choices share and develop teaching and assessment strategies and
discuss any !uestions "ith colleagues and trained facilitators. #articipants "ho have attended $%
"orkshops in the past may notice a change in focus for the ne" classes. While "orkshops in the
past often have been "eighted heavily to"ards reading marking and discussing assessment
this course focuses more closely on the organi&ation and teaching of the course. Through the
structure of the "orkshop''"hether this course is taken online or in a face'to'face environment''
it is hoped that best practice "ill be modeled. To a certain e(tent an online e(perience attempts
to model a real'time classroom but it can also take advantage of technology to make for a
different kind of rich e(perience. )ltimately the course is meant to offer an interesting
frame"ork for you to e(plore the ne" Language and Literature syllabus but the best ideas and
content "ill be coming from the participants themselves.

Attendance Policy
#articipants are e(pected to complete all of the assignments. ,ost of the assignments include
the completion of a sample of "ork or a reflection that "ill be posted. -egular discussion on the
forum is important to the course and should include at least one post for each module but "ould
ideally include entering into a discussion that may involve multiple posts. .ptional reading
vie"ing or listening assignments are available at the discretion of the participant.
Communication Policy
,ost of our communication "ill take place through the discussion forum and through e'mail
though there "ill be some opportunity for synchronous communication. The main discussion
forum "ill be used for the main discussion of the "eek as "ell as any relevant academic
discussions. The /coffee shop forum/ "ill be used for any non'academic discussion 0i.e.
catching up "ith a former colleague seeing "hat is going on at your old school planning an
apartment s"ap "ith the lucky teacher in %arcelona1. The facilitator can be contacted at any
time for a private conversation through the personal e'mail contact link. The facilitator may also
provide an alternate e'mail address. *uring the course there may be opportunities for a
synchronous "ebinar or brief chats. #articipants may be asked to schedule their o"n
synchronous meetings through 2.$# chat or a "ebinar function. 3urrently the /Wimba live
classroom/ is available on the site and has a variety of functions for synchronous meetings
0voice video chat document sharing slide sharing1.
Assessment
Assessment in the course is not meant to involve the assigning of marks and grades. Throughout
the "orkshop the leader "ill offer feedback make suggestions and fill in gaps to be sure that all
participants reach the outcomes of the course. We start "ith the assumption that the participants
are trained teachers and lifelong learners "ho "ill learn through their o"n engagement "ith the
materials and interaction "ith their peers. 4inal assessment in this course "ill be based on
participant self'evaluation in conjunction "ith the holistic assessment of the "orkshop leader
based on the discussion and participation rubric.
