Moral Dilemma: The reality of Educational System in Malaysia

If we see with the naked eye, there is no problem with the education system in our
country, but if we examine in greater depth, in fact there is something wrong in the education
system. So here, I'll talk about the moral dilemmas that occur in the real world, particularly in the
education system. In generals, globalization, borderless world, which is in line with the
sophisticated technological advances have sparked a variety of evolution in every field in
Malaysia, especially in the education system that turns the principles to keep pace with the
requirements of the current world. Education is now being paired with jobs where education is to
fill in the box for future employment. Therefore, students are now highly prefer the education
that offered high employment market. For example in IIUM, the number of students majoring in
Islamic Revealed Knowledge is few compared with students who are studying law or accountant.
This is because, students assume that not many job opportunities offered to field IRK. So, in my
observation, to meet the needs of the present world, the government has planned several
initiatives to improve the quality of education to be at par with the technological advances of
production and services. Thus, the Malaysian education policy changing drastically, actually
indirectly increase the cost or expenses are increasing due to the realization of curriculum
implementation. For example, if we see it today, the government has implemented the "School
Based Assessment" at the school level, where teachers are required to assess students'
achivement based on their performance and teachers are required to complete student data online
in database. Therefore, in order to implement this curriculum, the government needs to make
adjustments and improve facilities like computers and internet in every school. This modification
use the high cost and I believe that it has great implications on rising cost of education in
Malaysia. As the result, whether conscious or not, it has put pressure on the majority of
Moral Dilemma: The reality of Educational System in Malaysia

Malaysians made up of people who are from medium social economis status where thay had to
bear the burden of financial difficulties due to the increased cost of education which is does not
match with their standard of living.
Because of this, low-income communities had to surrender and accept that they are not
able to provide adequate education for their children because the high cost of education. As the
consequence, many of parent in our society who do not send their children to school, especially
in the rural areas. If we ask them why not send their children to school, they would give an
answer because of financial hardship. Therefore, to cover all the issues that arise, an actions have
been implemented to provide financial loans to students who can not afford to continue their
studies. The bodies such as PTPTN had give high loan to students, but the truth is to pay various
fees burden and at last the loan will be repaid by the student in their work later on. In my
personal view who have experience this situation, I have to compete to get the loan because there
are thousands of students who apply for the loan. I am sure that, those who are compete for the
loan want further their studies and dont want burden their family to bear the burden on high
fees. Here, we can see that our government has adopted the capitalist system in the education
system in our country. As evidence, there are two parties in our society, namely the rich who are
able to get education and the poor who are unable to get education due to the high cost of living,
and mostly poor people failed to compete in the market. I hope that the government will have to
review the existing education system so that justice and the welfare of the people can be the main
fundemental in the implementation of the basic education system in Malaysia. If the knowledge
for people in priority, I think there is no problem for the students get a high quality education.
Our government should emulate the developed countries where education is preferred to people
first and also establish free schools for students.
