Centre for Albanian Cultural Heritage - Trakult Centre
So much of what we know as history is subjective. It is an intricate pat-
tern of stories, memories and perceptions, woven through with hard facts
and dates.
The term cultural heritage tries to encompass that complexity including
as it does the tangible and the intangible histories of people and places,
buildings and landscapes.
A country needs to be involved and have a voice in its own history, to un-
derstand the past. Those voices should include not only the voices of the
great and powerful but also from the lives and work of ordinary people.
By being part of our history we understand the present better and stand
some chance of affecting our future.
The Centre for Albanian Cultural Heritage TRAKULT plays a critical
role in involving Abanian people in their own heritage, through proj-
ects, recording and through education, encouraging understanding and
knowledge. The Centres work supports Albanias future capacity to un-
derstand and care for those passing traditions, monuments and memories
a country should not lose.

The Project Voices of Butrint
During spring 2014, Centre for Albanian Cultural Heritage is carrying out the project
Voices of Butrint. The project is funded by the Butrint Foundation, London,UK. The
focus of the project is involving local communities in heritage through oral history.
What is Butrint for local communities? How did Butrint change their lives? How do
they see Butrint after many years of changes? How do they remember Butrint when they
first came? What are their stories related to the site? How would they describe Butrint?
What represent Butrint today? Answers to these questions will form the focus of this
project.
The aims of the project are to:
Integrate in a written history (narrative) the voices and memories of people who live
near the site of Butrint.
Provide to the Butrint Foundation an oral and historical archive, which, in the longer
term can be used to provide resources for schools in the region as well as for visitors
and tourists to Butrint.
An underlying value of this project is engaging local Albanian communities in under-
standing their heritage. The project has entered in its final stage and results will be
published in a report by J uly 2014.
