WINE CLUB

OFTHEWEEK SONOMA WINE SHOP

onoma Wine Shop hosts a very S popular, customized wine club. Located in the California historic

customized wine club. Located in the California historic landmark 1891 Pinelli Building on the Sonoma Plaza,

landmark 1891 Pinelli Building on the Sonoma Plaza, the Sonoma Wine Shop has served the adventurous wine lover for more than three decades. “Social Director” Bryan Cooper and team run a full-service wine shop and wine club, right in the heart of the wine country. Each month, they meet hundreds of their members (and prospective members) and share their finds. One of the keys to their continued success is that they know what it means to offer real service and quality, and they are dedicated to helping their club members find great wines at great prices. The wine club links members with contacts in hundreds of small wineries, providing in-depth knowl- edge about the vineyards and producers. Members receive an exten- sive selection of small production, quality wines, including some very hard-to-find labels and older vintages that are seldom available at any price. At Sonoma Wine Shop, they believe in the wines they sell. They use their tasting room to help show the wines to their members and get critical feedback. By having wines to show to hundreds of people every month, and listening to their members, they simply get better wines and are always on the lookout for the best quality and value. They also enjoy their charming surroundings and keep their showroom open seven days a week for their many visitors. Hand carved wine racks and natural cork floors make their shop intimate and fun. The wine racks, each with a hand-carved scene of Sonoma County, are one of a kind. The tasting room is open every day, and members can pair local cheeses with their wine. The staff host dozens of informal tastings each week. So the next time you are in Sonoma, drop by their shop to get a first hand glimpse at this hub of the wine trade, and the center for a wine club with around a thousand active members. So you should not be surprised that they ship out wines every day all over the world to members just to keep up.

WINE CLUB DETAILS
The Sonoma Wine Shop has four wine
clubs to choose from: the Will Call Club
of over 200 local wine seekers who live
near the shop; the quarterly Tasting
Room Club of two bottles for $50 plus
shipping; the largest Custom Wine Club
anywhere, where they pick each wine
for each member, based on budget and
frequency; and finally the Custom Case
Club where members receive custom-
picked wines with discounted prices
and discounted shipping.
A range of retail prices from $25 to 35 a
bottle make any of these clubs a great
value. Members also receive special
discounts on many wines.
To ship to most states the cost is a very
reasonable $25 per case. Order two or
more cases a year, custom picked for
you and save money with low shipping
and 10% off the entire order.
The wines are all small-production
wines primarily from Sonoma, Napa
and Mendocino counties, as well as
other California wineries. These
wineries are like fine, small restaurants:
they know them all personally and find
some of their best wines to send you.
If you love buttery Chardonnay , they
will send some. If you love big intense
Cabernets, they will send those. You tell
them what you prefer, they’ll ship it.
They specialize in Sauvignon Blanc,
Russian River Pinot Noir, hundred-year-
old-plus vine Zinfandels and Petite
Sirahs.
And they guarantee what they sell. Always.

Wine Garage – Here Comes the Jug!

by Michelle J. Baker

W ine Garage founder Todd Miller drilled a couple of holes in the wall at his bustling Calistoga

wine shop nearly two years ago in anxious anticipation of having his own winery’s juice flowing from one side of the wall to happy customers waiting on the other side. Well, it took a while, but the Wine Garage winery is finally open for busi- ness. From those holes in the wall now hang a couple of fabricated stainless steel nozzles, and out of them flow two right- eous and delicious blends, B1 (a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvi- gnon, Carmenere, Merlot and Petit Verdot) and R1 (a Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, Grenache, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah). “My biggest problem,” says Miller, “is that customers can’t decide which to buy because they love them both so much.” And with good reason. Miller bought the individual lots of finished wine that make up each blend from some of his personal winemaking friends. The wine came from grapes from several of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards. He’s sworn to secrecy on the vineyard sources so the Wine Garage blends don’t compete against the same wines priced at two, three or even four times what Miller sells it for – just $29.99 for a half-gallon jug, filled to order. When Todd and Joy Miller moved to Napa Valley in 2001, they were surprised to find that they could hardly find any wines for less than $45 a bottle. Then they went to a dinner party at a winemaker’s home, and were shocked to discover that many winemakers couldn’t afford to drink the wines they made. That’s when the Millers decided to open the first wine shop in Napa Valley that only carried wines under $25 a bottle. So in 2003, Todd Miller swapped his corporate necktie for jeans and boots and started scouring Northern California for great, undis- covered wines to offer at the new wine shop, the Wine Garage in Calistoga. Miller drove the roads less traveled, meeting with wine- makers, walking in their vineyards, and tasting their grapes, barrel samples and finished wines. The winemakers, tickled to have a real, live wine buyer at their winery, shared stories with Miller over a glass of wine at the dinner table. The Wine Garage carries a wide selection of bargains from Sonoma and Napa, and gems from as far afield as Paso Robles, Lodi,

and Napa, and gems from as far afield as Paso Robles, Lodi, the Sierra Foothills and

the Sierra Foothills and Mendocino County. The store still doesn’t carry any wines priced over $25, and Miller doesn’t buy a wine for the store unless he loves it. What’s best is the Wine Garage staff takes the guesswork out of wine shopping: tell the staff what you’re looking for and they will steer you to the perfect bottle. The Wine Garage is now a licensed winery, and in addition to the blends on tap, they produce a line of their own Wine Garage wines from grapes they crush. For reds they offer a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Napa Valley Zinfandel and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon; there are also two whites, Joy Ride (named for Todd’s wife and business partner, Joy), a lively blend of Albarino, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Muscat, and a 2008 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The Wine Garage’s wine club is one of the best deals around. Club members can choose to receive six bottles of red wine (or three red and three white) six times per year for $100 per shipment, plus shipping. The Wine Garage also offers an “Intense Red” selection of massively concentrated and extracted wines, also six bottles six times per year for $125 per shipment, plus shipping. The Wine Garage, located at 1020 Foothill Boulevard (Highway 29) in Calistoga, is open from 11 a.m. till 6:30 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and 11 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
