123 FINISH UNDER 20 MINUTES IN WESTCHESTER' S FASTEST 5K
by Greg Diamond
On a beautiful June morning, with cool temperatures and a fast
course, the Taconic Road Runners Club put on its biggest race in
several years. The North County News went from the one of the
hardest lOKs in Westchester to perhaps the easiest 5K, and with
prize money and a men's MAC championship it attracted some
fast times to set the pace for many personal records.
Elijah Kitur of the Westchester Track Club won in a Westchester
County record time of 14:22. He was chased by Rachid Tbatti
who also nished under the old record of 14:40 in 14:28. On the
women's side Tara Maguire won over Nilka Jepchirchir by 19 sec
onds with a 17:25. In all, 123 of the 362 nishers ran under 20
minutes. Both champions also won the age-graded competition
Taconic Running Life Editor Katy
Quinn Steps Down
by Debra Kenney
After ve years as serving as Editor of Taconic Running Life, Editor
Katy Quinn is stepping down. Katy cited her increased job re
sponsibilities and job-related traveling as the main reasons for ne
cessitating her resignation as editor. Katy took over the position
as Editor back in 1993 and created an award-winning newsletter!
Her hard work, perseverance, dedication and her attention to de
tail and a standard of excellence is recognized by all of the Taconic
Road Runners membership who enjoyed the Taconic Running Life
Newsletter. We want to thank Katy Quinn for all of her efforts!!
Katy, we hope you will still write some articles for us!
The resignation of Katy Quinn left some rather large shoes (or
should we say running shoes?) to ll. It wasn't long after TRRC
President, Lee Saroken, put out the word that Taconic was looking
for a new editor that she received a response! Tina Cullen told
Lee that she would like to be the editor. Tina has been a member
of Taconic for a little over a year and actually is rather new to the
sport of running, having been running for about three years. She
is currently a Marketing and Sales Consultant at Pepsi Cola in
Somers. Tina told the TRRC Board that she wanted to take a
more active position with the Club. We welcome Tina to the job of
Editor of Taconic Running Life!
and took home $250 each. The men's masters competition was
taken by Don DiDonato in 15:07 with Phil Richey just 10 seconds
behind. Eileen Troy took the women's masters race in 18:58. The
Mast er s wi nner s won $100.
Other notable age group winners included John O'Conner, fresh
off some spectacular 800 meter performances and one of the two
TRRC's Mike Slinskey(l) leads the pack near the 1 mile mark
winners of the TRRC scholarship competition. He ran a 16:15 to
win the 15-18 men's group. Sandra Khannouchi, one time winner
of the Mother's Day 5K and, with her daughter, winner of the mother
-daughter team, ran 18:12 to win the 30-39 women's group.
Due to the point-to-point nature of the race it was logistically dif
cult and the volunteers were more critical than ever. Once again
they were amazing. Bill Foley and Fred Reger set the nish line up
on Route 118 and with Vinnie Juliano put out 0.7 miles of cones,
all initially with owing trafc. Roy Altman set out a perfectly
measured course and included a 1/2 mile mark to help runners
adjust their early pace. Rich Adamski kept registration smooth as
usual. Ed McLaughlin did the usual great job in control of the n
ish line and as announcer. The incredible list of volunteers included
Bob and Eileen Davis, Nancy Vasta, Nancy Young, Lee Saroken,
Kathleen D'Ottavio, Greta Olson, Bob Greenberg, Pete Corsino,

One of the main purposes of the Taconic Road Runners Club is to
promote running. The events of the past two months have exem
plied how as individuals and as a club we support and participate
in the sport of running .
First, there was the Sybil Ludington 50K. The 20th anniversary
running of TRRC's longest race also brought with it a major rst.
The rst and second place overall nishers at Sybil were both na
tionally ranked female runners. Having Ellen McCurtin and
Danielle Chemiak taking the honors is very appropriate. Tony
Galfano and Ed McLaughlin did an incredible job which took nu
merous hours of work before, after and during the race.
The day following Sybil brought on the rains, but the volunteer
corps of Taconic was not dampened by the weather. We coasted on
down to Rye and successfully scored the Rye Derby with precision
and professionalism. Greg Diamond and Ed McLaughlin orga
nized and executed an event of which we are all proud to be a
par t .
Two TRRC women's teams traveled to Albany on May 30th, to
tackle the Freihoffers 5K National Championship. The teams
placed 19th and 20th and some excellent times were run by team
members. Thanks to coaches Scott Abercrombie, Greg Diamond
and Ed McLaughlin for being there with encouraging words and
c a m e r a s .
The next day the men's teams traveled to NYC to run in the BIG
40 in Central Park in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the
NY Road Runners Club. The race went very well and I hear the
food was fabulous after the race.
As June blossomed so did the mountain laurel, and an invitation
from Pete Meisler to view the plants via a trail run in Fahnstock
State Park. This year they were in full bloom and clearly marked
the trail -OOPS- some of us did take a couple wrong turns, but the
view from the top was magnicent. Maybe next year we can get
Dave Fleishmann to take us all on the Appalachian Trail.
The Avon lOK, formerly Advil, took place on Saturday June 6 in

local women run 1-2 in this race (even though they're from com
peting clubs). The absence of the high prole women runners was
very refreshing and much appreciated by some of us local athletes
(we didn't miss them at all),
Sunday June 7... what can 1 say? The North County News 5K was
such a success that I am at a loss to describe it. [Hard to believe?]
You can read the results (check the total number of runners nish
ing under 21 minutes) and see the photos from the race, but if you
missed it you will not be able to feel the excitement and positive
response from the runners , volunteers and spectators. A point-to-
point race is an extremely difcult race to manage but Greg Dia
mond took a race from conception to reality in his usual profes
si onal manner and wi t h ski l l and commi t ment . I t was at and
wow. . . f ast .
Oh, and by the way , if you want to get faster try one of our track
workouts on Wednesday evening at Yorktown High School. Doug
Miller and the 30 or so regulars would love to see you. And, if you
want company on a long run, join us at the pumphouse on Satur
day morning at 7:30 SHARP. TRRC is promoting running, as you
can see from this sampling, and that's what we are all about.
If this copy of Taconic Running Life looks a little different, the
reason is that Tina Cullen is the new Editor. Congratulations to
Tina on her maiden voyage. I would like to thank all the TRRC
volunteers. I know how much time you are giving up to make
ensuring our reputation of putting on the best races around. Please
continue with the smiles and the caring that have taken TRRC this
far and that will lead us into a future.

Mother's Day 5K - A Personal Perspective
by: Gia Boulos
The rst time I ran Taconic's Mother's Day race, I looked
forward to the day my daughter would be old enough to join
me. That time had come and we were both looking forward
to it. We weren't going into this as a serious competitive
venture, but just as something
we could share, that was just
"for the girls". This is espe
cially important to my daugh
ter, as we live in a male domi
nated household (Dad and
t hr ee br ot her s - ev en t he c at
and dog are male! That's a lot
of testosterone!)
Although we had no time to
train for the event, I wasn't too
DURST AND STOCKER conccmed about Kimberly's
ability to run the distance. In the past, we've gone out spon
taneously and run 3 miles before and being a naturally gifted
athlete, she never had any trouble doing this. She was also
i n t he mi ddl e of her soccer and Sof t bal l season, so she was
certainly getting a lot of running in.
We set out that rainy morning and I
was sure to warn her, not only as a
mother, but as a runner, about the per
ils of starting out too fast. Well, you
guessed it, the horn sounded to start
the race.... and where was Kimberly?
Out in front with Barbara Brittan! So
much for'wamings. I knew she would
soon fade, so I just maintained my
pace and soon we were running side
by side as planned. There was one
problem: by now Kimberly, at about
3/ 4 mi l e i nt o
the race had begun to learn a valu
able lesson negative splits! She
began to panic as we looped the pool
parking lot. She thought she had suddenly developed asthma.
I tried to reassure her and told her that I breathe that way in
every race, and if we just walk a bit she'll catch her breath
J O A N N E B E R T R A M
and we could continue slowly, taking breaks whenever she
felt necessary. As we continued to slowly traverse the course,
stopping to walk often, I
was wai t i ng f or my
daught er ' s compet i t i ve
spirit to re-emerge. She
seemed fearful, not wanting
t o r e t u r n t o a s t a t e o f

sudden, with the fmish line
in sight she took off with a
nal kick and beat me to the
nish line! Although I had
visions of nishing side by
side, 1 was thrilled to see her
nish with the guts and de-
temiination of a winner, us
ing every ounce of strength
she had left to nish strong,
instead of being beaten
down by an early mistake.
As it turned out, she went home with a silver medal which she
wore with pride the rest of the day.
Race director Is note: We asked Gia to write about her expert'
ence because a number of people had commented about how
encouraging she had been with Kimberly after that too fast
start and panic in the pool parking lot. We want to recognize
all the Moms who^ve encouraged and cajoled all of us
through the tough days and helped make us the competitors
we are today. Congratulations to Gia and Kimberly and a
special note of congratulations to Kathleen and Liz D'Ottavio,
our perennial Mother/Daughter team winners, on the birth of
KATE QUINN FINISHES STRONG
Liz's daughter.

Run Montgomery Pinetum Park in Greenwich Connecticut
and touch a heart.
The local Connecticut running clubs will be hosting a
4 mile race for Caryl Robotti, who is now undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.
This unique event will be held in Greenwich Connecticut and will he run in 4-person teams of open men and/or
women, women only, coed (two men, two women), or Municipal (town employees from any town).
Run in some one of the most beautiful parts of New England and enjoy the country air. Walkers are welcome and
encouraged but please, no strollers, head phones or dogs.
NO MAN (or woman) IS AN ISLAND but, when it conies to the sport of running, one has come pretty close.
Caryl Robotti has shown tireless effort as a race director and participant in numerous running events. She currently
serves as President of the Stamford Running Club and she can be credited with the rst all women's race held in Stamford
Connecticut last fall, which proved to be a tremendous success.
Caryl's talents are not limited to putting on running events. I saw her recently at the Jim Fixx 5-mile Memorial Day
race in Greenwich, and was bemoaning my recent running slump and disappointments. Caryl, not only cheered me
on but, left me with a feeling of condence and the power to push to the nish. She touched my heart. That's what
Caryl does, she reaches inside and gives apart of herself to others. Now it is our turn to give back, Please join us in
running this race for Caryl. Do what you do... run (or walk), and as a bonus touch a heart. It is a truly, winning
feeling.

Letters to the Editor... DearTaconic Running Ufe,
Dear Edi tor,
Over the last several days I have reected
on that 5K in Yorktown! My goodness, what a eld!
Without a doubt, it had to be the best 5K in this part of
the country, ever!
When and where did you see a winning time of 14:22,
sixty runners breaking 18:00 and a master, me, getting
8th in his age-group with a 16:47? Never have I seen
such quantity and quality in one race. OK, some would
say the NYRRC Club Team Championship Race is
loaded and Boston has produced some great elds,
but the NYRRC race is in the heart of the biggest run
ning club in the world and Boston leads the nation.
So, not bad for Westchester, right? And for me, the
North County News 5K showed that the 5K is not a
consolation race for the marathon; it is a different ani
mal all together! Just fast and sweet. Top end aero
bic stuff!
Without a doubt, congratulations have to go to Greg
Diamond, the race director, and the Taconic Road Run
ners Club, Wow. My head will be spinning for days to
c o m e .

As a 20 year member of TRRC, I'd like to comment on
Nancy Young's article in the last newsletter regarding the
changes in TRRC. I agree with Nancy that the club has
changed, and I was sorry that some of the members are
experiencing this as a negative thing. Changes don't need to
make the "old days" good or bad.
I see the changes as overall being very positive. In the "old
days," rarely was the spouse or child of a runner seen at the
races, now entire families attend. There were extremely few
volunteers at the races. While we still, in general, see the
same people volunteering, there are many more of us than in
the past. The best change for me personally was the chance
to join a women's team and compete in Central Park, which
is both a gratifying and humbling experience. Since I
moved to Manhattan some years ago, I cannot see my
TRRC friends every Wednesday night, as I did for many
years. So it's great to have the opportunity to see them both
in New York City and in Westchester.
The old days were extremely important for me as a new
runner. It was at TRRC where I got encouragement and
advice from more experienced runners about mnning my
rst marathon in 1980 (where did the years go?). I did my
rst speedwork at the Yorktown High Track, enjoyed many
runs in the company of others, and made lifelong friend
ships. And who can forget all those beers and Sambucas at
Sunshine Pizza, Chicken Wings at the Hunterbrook, bus
trips to the Albany 30K Chopperthon, etc. etc.!!
Yes, Taconic has changed. For me, Taconic is like my
second family, and while my rst family has changed over
the years, it is still nonetheless my family, in whatever shape
or form it evolves into. Thanks to Nancy for a great article,
and I hope not all of us are lamenting the "good" old days.

Dear Lee and Ed,
Thanks for a nice event this past Sunday [June
7]. The Millrose people that showed (three men, two
women) really enjoyed the "trip to the country."
As usual, your event was well-organized. Any
glitches weren't apparant to the participants. Best of
all, at and fast as advertised. For me, just what the
doctor ordered - sub sevens with only two months of
trai ni ng!
Thanks again.

Taconic Road Runners Club Announces 1998 Scholarship Winners
The Taconic Road Runners Club is pleased to award John O'Connor of Yorktown High School and Paul J. Maglione
of Hendrick Hudson High School the 1998 "Hooked on Running" Scholarships. In the spirit of the healthy race,
graduating seniors were invited to apply for a $500 scholarship. John O'Connor has been accepted to the College
of William & Mary. Paul Maglione will be attending the University of Rochester. We look forward to seeing these
names at future Taconic Races!
A committee of Taconic volunteers served on a scholarship conmiittee to determine the scholarship winners. This
year there was a tremendous response from the area high schools with 17 applicants. Taconic would like to thank
those members who devoted their time to this great Taconic event including Lee Saroken, Nancy Young, Joanne
Bertram, Steve Greenberg, Margie Jeraci, and Tina Cullen.
John O'Connor "Hooked on Running"
I have been running for only 4 years, but my decision to become a runner is the most valuable decision that I have
made. Until my freshman year in high school, 1 was primarily a soccer player, but in 9th grade I joined the cross-country
team. I remember how much my legs hurt during the rst week, and how long three miles seemed, but for some reason I
stuck with it. The lessons I have learned, the friends I have made and the success I have achieved make me look back at the
rst day of cross country without regret and with much pleasure.
Running is a special and unique type of sport; the amount of effort you put into it is what you receive in return.
Being a runner, I have learned the value of hard work, determination and dedication. When I rst started out with the team,
I would shy away from the more difcult practices, and I didn't know how to set goals and try my hardest to reach them. Its
funny how nine years of school couldn't teach me these things, but only one year of running could. Soon I began to set
goals for myself and then work my training towards accomplishing what I wanted to do. Injuries and disappointment often
plague the runner, but surviving through them taught me how to handle adversity. These lessons spread to other areas of my
life, teaching me how to succeed in the classroom as well.
The only people that understand runners are runners themselves and I have certainly made many friends within
the high school track world. I think it is great to have a sport where, when everything is said and done, you are good friends
with your opponents. I love that I can call up a friend to go for a run on a Sunday, even though we raced against each other
for a county or invitational title the day before. Friendships are so valuable when trying to be as good a runner as you can
be, because training does get difcult and its always good to have friends to help you through it.
I am so glad that I started running, and not just because of how successful I have been. I love to just lace up the
shoes on a sunny day and go for a nice run on the trails. I value everything the sport has taught me, and I plan to never stop
going out for those special runs that we all love.
Paul J. Maglione
Taconic Road Runners Club ^*Hooked on Running" Scholarship
I attended my rst cross country meet while in the fth grade when I accompanied my parents to watch my brother
run. From the opening stampede to the nishing kick, this sport captivated me like none I had ever wimessed before.
I ran my rst road race in October 1992 at the age of twelve. This led me to decide to try to pass the state-mandated
tness test that would allow me to join the high school team while still in middle school. Unfortunately, I could not pass a
single part of this test. Unable to run for the high school team, I regularly attended running clinics which were conducted by
the high school cross country coach at the middle school.
Finally, when I reached high school I was able to join the high school cross country and track teams. In my rst one
mile time trial on the track I ran a time of over seven minutes. Hardly a desirable time for an aspiring distance runner, My rst
5k cross country time was equally unimpressive, just under 30 minutes. I spent the rest of my freshman year bringing up the
rear in just about every race I ran. It didn't matter to me because the love for running was still there, and I knew as I long as I
continued to work hard things would get better.
And they did I trained all summer and joined the cross country team in the fall as a vastly improved runner. My times
on the track saw similar improvements. By the time I was a senior I nished 9th in the same race that I had nished 136th as
a f reshman.
Though my times have diminished, my love for running has not. The sport has taught me to believe in myself and
that hard work and dedication will pay off. By applying this philosophy to other areas of my life I can improve in them just as
I have improved as a runner. I know that if I can improve from a cross country runner who runs a 29 minute 5K to a member
of the Cross-County team, there is nothing that hard work cannot accomplish.

Taconic Strides Through Burlington -
Li f e I s A Mar at hon- Be I n I t !
By Anne Tuite
Standing at the starting line of my fth marathon, my mind focused on the 26.2 miles ahead
of me, I reviewed my training, retied my shoe-laces for the third time, and exchanged
anxious words of encouragement with my fellow road warriors. As the gun-shot sent us on
our way, my training partner and I embarked on a journey that would test our physical and
mental capacities. All the training had been done, the gallons of water consumed, the goal
was the nish line. The brass ring was ours for the taking. It would only elude our grasp if the speed and the heat
diverted our attention. Fortunately that day our goal was realized and the nish line welcomed us home.
It is said that life's learnings happen in reection. In reecting upon the race 1 realized that it was a metaphor in the journey of life. Yet this
race, and therefore one's life must have a purpose, a goal to run towards. Watching the pack of runners in front of me and hearing those
behind made me realize that we were all bound together by a common goal. However, there were as many different reasons to run the race
as there were runners. Our individual goals created a powerful mass of humanity capable of collective greatness. This sense of purpose
propelled us forward, ready to tackle the hills, accept encouragement from strangers and bestow well wishes on those struggling to
overcome the obstacles that caused them to question their sense of self.
I would posit that we are all in a marathon, the race of life. It is a daily journey that tests your preparedness, your
capacity for challenge, and your willingness to reach down deep inside yourself and go forward. We are each in this
race for a reason, the challenge is dening your own purpose and creating a "training schedule" that will aid in your
development. Without knowing the course a runner would be lost, anxiously taking wrong turns, wasting energy and
becoming exhausted with the thought of continuing. In your race, how many wrong turns have you taken? How
many hills have beaten you? Does your training schedule need to be revised to get you back on course? A runner who
is wavering on stopping will slow down, refuel and continue. Perhaps that is what we all must do to stay on course.
Your challenge is to dene your purpose; discover your goals, your life's mission, and "train" for your individual
greatness. A life without knowing one's purpose is a journey with no destination. Having a purpose for the work you
do gives it credence. It denes who you are. It is the essence of self As you create your training schedule, surround
yourself with those who accept the journey too, give and
receive the encouragement needed to overcome the physi
cal and mental obstacles that you will encounter. Slow
down, refuel your body, mind and spirit and create a re
vised training schedule. The road is yours, the journey has
begun. Victory is a word of your own denition
This philosophical prose was inspired by participating in the
J998 Vermont City Marathon in Burlington. The clean, fresh
air, sparkling waters of Lake Champlain and enthusiastic crowd
made for an excellent running event. The course twists and
turns through the city of Burlington providing a fast pace over
rolling terrain. Taconic was well represented by Fred Reger
(3:31:59), Tina Cullen (3:43:16), Emmy Stacker (3:12:29), Anne
Tuite (3:50) and Mike Slinskev who took 2nd over-all with a
time of 2:22. If you are looking for a novel way to spend
Memorial Day weekend in '99, we found it in Vermont! Con
gratulations to everyone! And to those who supported us in
training!

By Ed McLaughlin
Over the years some races have dropped off the Taconic Road Runners Club schedule for one reason or another, or a race is
changed in some signicant way. Whenever this happens some club members nd the adjustment difcult. But, not to worr)'! In
order to ease this painful experience we've come up with a solution, it's called Virtual Taconic.. How about re-living some of those
races which no longer appear on the schedule? Something like a time machine,., something like a time warp... something like
being stuck in the nostalgic past... the good old days?
It's easy to do, you know why? The courses are all still there, all you have to do is to show up and run them. Debbie Schramm
lOK? It's still there. Titicus Resevoir 7 Miler? Yep, still there. Guiding Eyes for the Blind lOK? The old North County News
course, including grunt hill? That's right, none of the roads have been moved, not an inch!
Here's how Virtual Taconic will work. Get yourself a can of spray chalk, choose an appropriate starting line, mark it off. Hop in
your car and zip around for the appropriate distance, marking off the miles as you go. Park the car, run the course - be sure to time
yourself. Now here's the virtual part, write down your name, address, age, time, etc. and sign a waiver, then either e-mail or snail
mail it to: Virtual Taconic, PO Box 711, Shrub Oak, NY 10588. along with the race fee of $12.00.
During the year, we will post the times in the newsletter and on the website, at the end of the year we will declare the winners.
Also, you can trace your progress, and improve your time as the year goes by. Say you go out and run Debbie Schramm in 48
minutes in July. Your time gets posted, and you are fourth in your age-group. Now you have the opportunity to back out there
any time you like, say in October when the temperatures are more to your liking, and you run it in 45 minutes. You post your new
time, and - Presto! - you move up to second, what a deal!

Taconic Volunteers Make it Happen -
A Note of Thanks to the Sybil Volunteers
by Tony Galfano
I want to recognize those members of the club who helped make this year's Sybil 50K Race a success. First a thank you to
Ed and Lee for their efforts in putting this event together and helping it run so smoothly. Next, a thank you to all those who
helped out on race day to support the runners at the water stops along the course and at the nish line. Joe Porcaro at
number one. Rich Nash at two. Marci Smith and Stephanie Langtry at three, Ed Dillon at four and six, and Leo Gormley
who stepped in to help out at ve when another volunteer was unable to make it. Frank Messman was in his regular spot
and Don and Beverly McCann weerre at White Pond Rd. and Route 52 in Peckville at mile 21. Kathleen D'Otavio and
Mary Fields were at the ninth station at Farmers Mills Road and Gypsy Trail Road. Thanks to Mike Carney who handled
the last water stop. A thank you to Greta Olsson who was at Route 301 to direct the runners to the nish line. With the
help of Amy and Greg Gates, and Bob Daubenbis at the nish line, Ed, Lee and I were able to keep the post-race activities
moving along. Finally a thank you to Dave Farquhor for his artistic touch in making the over-all awards, and to Owen
McCrudden for his handling the remainder of the trophies. I want to let the volunteers know their efforts are appreciated. I
received a note of thanks from the winne, Ellen McCurtin, saying that you did an amazing job of supporting the runners
("great aid stations") and directing them over the course. Thanks again!!!
Taconic 'Runs' Successful Race for Rye Derby
There are few of us in Taconic who enjoy running in the
rain. How many of us would like to stand in the rain at a
race? Well, on Sunday, April 26th a group of Taconic
Road Runners who normally wouldn't like to run in these
types of conditions, found themselves setting up cones,
handing out medals, spindling at a bionic rate, and keep
ing the tired, drenched nishers in order in the chutes.
Due in part to the hard work of Rich Nash and Ed
McLaughlin, TRRC managed to perpetuate their repu
tation of excellent race organizers. Again, this success
was made possible by those Taconic members volunteer-

April 25, 1998, Carmel, New York
Weather. Cool, Sunny, breezy
29 starters, 25 nishers
What would be more appropriate for the running of the 20th
Annual Sybil Ludington 50K historical Run than to have a
woman be the race's overall winner? Well, 1 guess that would
be to also have a woman as runner-up! That's exactly what
happened this past Saturday as Ellen McCurtin, 31, of New
York City broke the existing course record with a very fast
3:48:34. The old record was Eileen Corley's mark of 3:55:14
in 1986. Following a mere two minutes behind was last year's
defending woman's champ, Daniele Cherniak, 36, of Cohees
NY, her time 3:50:58. We are sure that Sybil, who rst tra
versed the course on April 26, 1777 (on horseback), would
McCurtin, Balsamo and Cherniak
approve. First male runner (3rd overall) was Ralph Balsamo,
McCurtin's Millrose AA teammate, in 3.56:46.
Among the other nishers, we note that Don Villeneuve, a
member of the host Taconic Road Runner Club, completed
his 19th Sybil (for some reason Don missed the very rst one)
in 4:30:37 which was good for third place in the always lough
50-59 age group.
Timothy Kouroumis, 60, received the "Sy Mah" award for
winning the 60-69 age group in the time of 4:38:39.
Just so you don't get the idea that this year's result was .some
sort of uke, you should note that McCurtin was NYRRC's
"Ultra Runner of the Year" a couple of years ago, and Cherniak
is the reigning US National lOOK Champion, having won that
distinction a mere few weeks before Sybil.
I'm sure there's a challenge to be thrown down here. To all of
2 0
the wimpy, with a capital "W", Taconic men who fold like a
poorly made tent when a real race is offered up. This is the
best 50K around, ask anyone, and it's is your own backyard -
what's your excuse?. Thank god for Don Villeneuve, David
Farquhar (who drove down from Mass.), A1 Dumont and Joe
Handelman for carrying the Taconic colors on race day this
year. (Results appeared in the May issue)

Women' s Running
By Debra Kenney
I can't believe the year is half over! It seems like the year is
ying by. It must be because the Taconic Women's Teams
have been running many races. In April we traveled south
and ran the Queens Half-Marathon. It was a tough race be
cause it rained before it started and throughout the race! The
women who participated were: Barbara Britten 1:31:31, Debra
Kenney 1:34:24, Nancy Vasta 1:38:07,
Nancy Young 1: 44: 15, Lee Saroken

On May 30th, the Women's Masters Team
got a very early start and headed up to
Albany to run the Freihoffer 5K Run for
Women. Thanks to Ed McLaughlin,Greg
Diamond and Scott Abercromtjie for do
ing the driving. The Freihoffer Run for
Women was the USA Track and Field Open
& Masters National Championship. It was a beautiful day
and many of the top women runners were there. It was very
exciting to watch Lynn Jennings and Joan Samuelson warm
up. TRRC elded two masters teams and the teams nished
19th and 20th. After the race, we were treated to l ots of
cookies and Freihoffer's bakery products and a live rock and
roll band that performed at the Empire State Plaza.
If I can speak on behalf of the TRRC Masters women that
attended the Freihoffer Run, there was a special feeling we
all felt thatday. For us to be a part of an all women's race that
had over 3000 r unner s f r om al l over was a t hr i l l . I t was al so
great to have the opportunity to meet Mary Fannelli Lund.
Mary used to run with Taconic some years back before the
Lund family relocated to Buffalo. I have heard from a lot of
TRRC members that Mary was a great runner and a very
nice person. 1 can now say I know this Is true. Joan Dietrick
also ran the Freihoffer Run. She is not a Masters yet, but it
was the rst race she has run since her injury almost two
years ago! Welcome back, Joan, we look forward to your
40th birthday. See what running does for you, it makes you
look forward to that big 40, not dread it!
A week later, on June 6th, TRR women headed down to Cen
tral Park along with over 2,000 other women to compete in
the Avon Mini Marathon 10K. Usually this race is very hot,
but this year it was cool and comfortable. Nancy Young's
10K was her best time yet! Congratulations, Nancy!
We are still in 2nd place, which is quite remarkable consider
ing we didn't eld a team for the May NYRR Grand Prix race
because it was the same date as the TRR Mother's Day 5K!

The Town of Yorktown supervisor Linda
Cooper and her right hand person, Patti
Malone, were instrumental in getting the
new course approved with the town board.
Without their support, there probably
wouldn't have been a new NCN, The po
l i ce chi ef. Bob Arruda was the next i n l i ne
to lend his support in a big way. With his
Seargant McMahon at the helm on race day,
trafc on the course was non-exi stent. The
Yorktown Ambulance Corps was present
and fortunately not needed.
The Daily Bagel joined the sponsorship
roles this year and contributed enough to
allow us to do prize money and sweatshirts
for age group winners. They are opening a
new store near the old one on Route 202 (see the yer in this news
l etter.)
The North County News continued its agship role in putting on
their race. Through some tough recent years, with a minimal num
ber of runners involved, they stuck with it.
I've scored and been involved in many races but never was the sole
race director before. I appreciate more than ever what race directors
must live through and the absolutely vital role that volunteers play.

The Men's Masters Team & Other Things
by Scott Abercrombie
As of June 7th we have completed 5 out of 13 races in the New
York Road Runners Grand Prix, and 2 out of 9 in the Metropolitan
Athletic Congress Grand Prix. Our best team effort has been at
the Aspire lOK (MAC Series) in Plainview, Long Island in April.
Our 8th Master was under 38 minutes with Phil Richey, Steve
Calidonna & Rick Ashby 1,2,3 in the 40-44 age group and Scott
Mosenthal 1st in the 45-49 age group. The rest of the gang that
day was Roy Altman, Bob Briglio, Skip Hovdestad, Paul Pacchianna
& myself. The most recent N.Y.R.R.C. Grand Prix race, the 4 miler
on May 31. was a disappointment. We were third, and the Staten
Island club advanced to within a few points of our rst place posi
tion in the scries. History may be repeating itself, as last year we
were essentially tied with Staten Island going into the last race.
Joe Porcaro scored t hi rd f or t he t eam wi t h a t i me of 23: 35 af t er
only 5 weeks of decent training following a yearlong injury! Since
we organized an active Taconic master's team in 1990 Joe has
been our most consistent performer and participant. Greg Dia
mond l ed t he t eam at t he 4 mi l er wi t h a t i me of 22: 27. Bob
Daubenbis, Skip Hovdestad, Kevin Moran & myself rounded out
the team that day. The North County News was our second race in
the MAC series. We won with Phil Richey running the 5K in
15:17, Steve Calidonna in 16:16 & Rick Ashby in 16:34! 362 n
ishers! Special congratulations to Team member Greg Diamond
for transforming the North County News into a super race! Spe
cial congratulations are also due to team member Scott Mosenthal
for winning (over all, not just age group) the 5 mile race around
Lake Carmel on May 2nd, and for his promotion to principal of
Irvington High School! Scott is a great marathon runner from the
past whose running has been somewhat on hold due to coaching
and other community activities. Thanks to having one of our own,
Ken Martin , on the MAC Board, the MAC organization has be
come aware of our children's races on Columbus day. As a result
the Plainview Old Bethpage Road Runners Club in Long Island is
interested in directing a similar race. This is the same club that
does the Aspire lOK and the Ocean To Sound Relay (a spin off
from our Manhattan to Peekskill Relay). So, on June 9th I met
with P.O.B.R.R.C.'s board of directors, and explained all the ins
and outs of the childrens race. They were very receptive, and con
sidering that nearly 500 children participate in our race every year,
it's exciting that this concept may spread into other locations. Some
of the board members were up here two days before, (they refer to
our area as being upstate), to run the North County News 5K, and
1 heard a lot of nice comments on what a great race it was.
