ELDERLY NOT A PRIORITY GROUP FOR H1N1 VACCINATIONS
(Valdosta, GA) - Older adults, who are among those hit hardest by seasonal
flu, are least likely to catch the H1N1 virus. That is why the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention did not identify persons 65 and older as a
priority group for the H1N1 vaccine. According to the CDC's web site, there
have been relatively few infections and even fewer cases of serious illness
and death with this new virus in people older than 65. Most people who
have gotten sick from the H1N1 virus have been younger. Laboratory tests
on blood samples indicate that older people likely have some pre-existing
immunity to the 2009 H1N1 flu virus. "Although people 65 and older are
the least likely to be infected with H1N1 flu, they are at a higher risk of hav-
ing serious complications if they do become infected," stated Lynne
Feldman, M.D., MPH, District Health Director. "The CDC has designated
them as a priority for receiving antiviral drugs for this reason."
It is very important that antiviral drugs be used early to treat flu illness in
people 65 and older who are hospitalized and people who are sick with flu
and have a greater chance of getting serious flu complications.
"Once the high risk groups have received the H1N1 vaccine, persons 65 and
older will have the opportunity to be vaccinated when more vaccine arrives,"
said Feldman. The U.S. Government has purchased 250 million doses of the
vaccine, so anyone who wants to get the vaccine will eventually have the
opportunity to do so. Meanwhile, it is important to continue using good
health hygiene methods to protect yourself against the flu. "Everyone needs
to use everyday preventative methods, such as washing their hands frequent-
ly, covering their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and staying
home from work or school when sick," stated Feldman.
The five priority groups to receive the H1N1 injectable vaccine remain:
z Pregnant women
z Persons 6 months to 24 years old
z H1N1 Vaccine & Elderly - page 2
z People who live with or care for infants less than 6 months of age
z Health care and emergency medical personnel
z Anyone from 25 to 64 years of age with certain chronic medical condi-
tions or a weakened immune system.
The H1N1 shot is still available to the five priority groups through-
out the district; however, temporary shortages are expected. Some private
physicians do have the H1N1 vaccine. "We do recommend calling your
health care provider before going to get the vaccine to make sure they have
it," stated Feldman. "Some providers have not yet received the vaccine, while
others are temporarily out. Providers will be receiving more vaccine on a reg-
ular basis." A full list of H1N1 providers is available at www.southhealth
district.com or http://health.state.ga.us. Health departments and providers
are also experiencing a temporary shortage of the seasonal flu vaccine. Due
to the production of the H1N1 vaccine, seasonal flu vaccine was produced
early this year. More seasonal flu vaccine is expected in the health depart-
ments later this month or the first of December.

For more information on the H1N1 vaccine visit the South Health
District or CDC web site. People may also call their local health
department, personal health care provider or South Health District
at 229-333-5370.

REAL ESTATE Injectable H1N1 Vaccine arrives in South Georgia

Valdosta, GA - The injectable H1N1 vaccine (shot) is now available in
health departments throughout the South Health District. Health
departments received their initial supply of the injectable vaccine this
week and are prepared to start dispensing it to the priority groups set
by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The five priority groups to receive the H1N1 shot first are:
z Pregnant women
z People who live with or care for infants younger than 6 months
of age
z Health care and emergency medical personnel
z Anyone from 6 months to 24 years of age
z Anyone from 25 to 64 years of age with certain chronic medical
conditions or a weakened immune system.
The H1N1 shot was made just like the seasonal flu vaccine and is
expected to be as safe and effective. “The H1N1 vaccine will not
prevent you from getting sick from the seasonal flu or other illnesses
with flu-like symptoms,” stated Debra Adams, APRN, Nursing & Clinical
Director. “Persons interested in being protected from seasonal and
H1N1 influenza should get both vaccines this year.”
The H1N1 virus spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing
and sometimes through touching objects contaminated with the virus, just
like other flu viruses. Signs of the 2009 H1N1 virus can include
fatigue, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, chills, coughing and
sneezing. Some people may also have diarrhea and vomiting. According to
the CDC most people feel better within a week; while others have to be
hospitalized due to complications such as pneumonia.
To learn more about H1N1 or if you should get the vaccine call your
local health care provider, local health department or South Health
District at 229-333-5370. Vaccine Information Sheets are available at
www.southhealthdistrict.com or www.cdc.gov.

When all the Thanksgiving leftovers have
