Aim :
Production of maleic anhydride, an organic acid anhydride at Indian Oil Corporation Limited having
capacity of approximately 2.5 kilotonnes per annum used in the manufacturing of wide range of
products like unsaturated polyester resins, alkyd resins, insectides and lubricating oil additives.

Maleic anhydride is an organic compound with the formula C

O. It is the acid anhydride of maleic
acid. It is colorless or white solid with an acrid odour.
The plant produces maleic anhydride by vapor-phase oxidation of n-butane. The overall process
converts the methyl groups to carboxylate and dehydrogenates the backbone.
Industrial production of maleic anhydride is achieved by integration of following unit processes:

maleic acid reactor
and distillation column
