Volunteer Recognition Charities USA 2014 2015 Volunteer Profiles Catholic Charities USA supports national recognition of volunteers in the Catholic Charities network. Each issue of Charities USA - the Catholic Charities network magazine will spotlight a volunteer that serves in a capacity related to the theme of the issue. The theme over the next three issues is "protecting human life and dignity." The theme will be broken down roughly along the following lines: Summer 2014- "Shadows" of life (services to undocumented, abused and neglected children, domestic violence and sex trafficking victims, sex offenders and johns, people with addictions, children with behavioral health issues, etc.) Article and photos deadline: June 3 Fall 2014 -"Twilight" of life (caregiver support, adult day programs, guardianship, hospice, senior housing, elder abuse prevention, etc.) Article and photos deadline: August 5 Winter 2015 - To be determined (more information will follow in a future newsletter) Article and photos deadline: November 18 Profiles of volunteers should be about 400 words long. They should describe the kind of service the volunteer provides, but also share about the volunteer and what makes volunteering rewarding for him or her. High-quality photos are requested with each profile. To submit a volunteer profile for consideration, please send an email to vmn@catholiccharitiesusa.org. In the subject please include the target issue (i.e. Charities USA - Fall 2014). Include the name, title, email address and phone number of the nominator and the volunteer, as well as the name of the agency. Please ensure that the volunteer approves being recognized. The executive director of each agency should be aware that the nomination is being submitted. Resource Sharing Resource Library - The resources from the old Catholic Charities USA website have been moved over to a third party website - Scribd. Browse forms, policies and training materials. Steering Committee members are in the process of browsing the website and identifying deficits in the library. There will be a call for resources announced over the next few months. VMN News CCUSA Partners with Verified Volunteers - Here at Catholic Charities USA we have been closely studying the issue of volunteer screening over the past several months. Verified Volunteers is truly the only background check platform tailored to the specific needs of the service sector and the first online community to mobilize repeat, vetted volunteers. We believe this platform has the potential to dramatically transform volunteer screening for the better for Catholic Charities agencies throughout the United States. Organizations bring their volunteer programs to Verified Volunteers for a number of reasons: when they are concerned with the sheer amount of time they are spending administering background checks, upset with the low quality of screening they are doing, alarmed at the rising cost of screening as more volunteers are checked, or frustrated because their volunteers tell them they were already screened last week by another organization. If any of those concerns hit home for you and your organization, Id encourage you to talk to Verified Volunteers. The company is backed by Sterling Infosystems, the nation's largest background screening company. At Catholic Charities USA, we are working very closely with Tom Klein, Executive Director of Verified Volunteers, and his team to introduce Verified Volunteers capabilities to Catholic Charities USA volunteer programs and volunteers. Weve also arranged for special discounted pricing for Catholic Charities USA agencies. To get a sense of their solution, please visit their website, www.verifiedvolunteers.com. We ask that you reach out to Tom directly at tom@verifiedvolunteers.com or (646) 485-3747 for additional information and specific details on how this solution can work for your agency. 2014 Annual Gathering Volunteer Managers Pre-Conference Institute CCUSA will be offering Institutes on Saturday, October 4, 2014, prior to the Annual Gathering. These institutes are being designed to offer participants a deeper dive into a specific issue or series of topics. This year, the VMN will be hosting its first ever pre-conference institute, Investing in 81% of Catholic Charities. This will be a great opportunity for volunteer managers across the network to participate in peer-to-peer networking and information sharing. More information and how you can register to be part of this event will follow in the weeks to come! Newsletter changes - Sandy Buck, a member of the steering committee, is the point person for the newsletter. The newsletter is disseminated on the 15th of each month. If you have articles/information that would benefit the Network, please send them to Sandy. Thank you Lyndon for your contributions to the newsletter! Volunteer Topics in the News Fifty-six percent of respondents told pollsters that more volunteering in their community would have "a more positive impact on [their] day-to-day life" than electing a president who agrees with them on important issues. Just 39 percent said that the election of a particular president would have a greater impact.
