Chapter I
A Drop From the Ocean of the Nectar of the Glories of
Preaching Ka Consciousness
Introduction
"Spreading Ka consciousness is r Caitanya Mahprabhu's mission;
therefore His sincere devotees must carry out His desire.... The devotees of
Lord Caitanya must preach Ka consciousness in every village and town in
the world. That will satisfy the Lord. It is not that one should act
whimsically for his own personal satisfaction. This order comes down
through the parampar system, and the spiritual master presents these orders
to the disciple so that he can spread the message of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu. It is the duty of every disciple to carry out the order of the
bona fide spiritual master and spread Lord Caitanya's message all over the
world."
Cc. Madhya 16.64
"Preaching is the best service to the Lord. The Lord will immediately be
extremely satisfied with one who engages in this service of preaching Ka
consciousness. This is confirmed by the Lord Himself in Bhagavad-gt
(18.69). Na ca tasmn manuyeu kacin me priya-kttama: 'There is no
servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one
more dear.' If one sincerely tries his best to spread Ka consciousness by
preaching the glories of the Lord and His supremacy, even if he is
imperfectly educated, he becomes the dearmost servant of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. This is bhakti. As one performs this service for
18
humanity, without discrimination between friends and enemies, the Lord
becomes satisfied, and the mission of one's life is fulfilled."
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.6.24
"The members of this (ISKCON) Society must always remember that if
they stick to the regulative principles and preach sincerely according to the
instructions of the cryas, surely they will have the profound blessings of
Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu, and their preaching work will be successful
everywhere throughout the world."

A Note of Explanation: Every word of the text of this book is taken directly
from the books of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupda, Founder-crya of the International Society for Krishna
Consciousness. The texts appearing in boldface type are rla Prabhupda's
translations of verses from the Vedic literatures. The text in regular roman
type consists of excerpts from His Divine Grace's summary studies and
purports.
1. The Mission of the Lord: To Give All
Living Entities the Benediction of
Ka Consciousness
I offer my respectful obeisances unto r Ka Caitanya and Lord
Nitynanda, who are like the sun and moon. They have arisen
simultaneously on the horizon of Gaua to dissipate the darkness of
ignorance and thus wonderfully bestow benediction upon all.
Cc di 1.2
May that Lord, who is known as the son of rmat acdev, be
transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart.
Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has appeared in the age of
Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation ever offered
19
before: the most sublime and radiant spiritual knowledge of the mellow taste
of His service.
Cc. di 1.4
r Ka and Balarma, the Personalities of Godhead, who formerly
appeared in Vndvana and were millions of times more effulgent than the
sun and moon, have arisen over the eastern horizon of Gaua-dea [West
Bengal], being compassionate for the fallen state of the world. The
appearance of r Ka Caitanya and Prabhu Nitynanda has surcharged the
world with happiness. As the sun and moon drive away darkness by their
appearance and reveal the nature of everything, these two brothers dissipate
the darkness of the living beings' ignorance and enlighten them with
knowledge of the Absolute Truth.
Cc di 1 85-89
A Drop From the Ocean
of the Nectar of the Glories of
Preaching Ka Consciousness:
1. It is the mission of the Lord to liberate the conditioned
souls:
The Lord wanted to create the cosmic manifestation to give another
chance to the conditioned souls who were dormant in forgetfulness. The
cosmic manifestation gives the conditioned souls a chance to go back home,
back to Godhead, and that is its main purpose. The Lord is so kind that in
the absence of such a manifestation He feels something wanting, and thus
the creation takes place. Although the creation of the internal potency was
manifested, the other potency appeared to be sleeping, and the Lord wanted
20
to awaken her to activity, just as a husband wants to awaken his wife from
the sleeping state for enjoyment. It is the compassion of the Lord for the
sleeping energy that He wants to see her awaken for enjoyment like the
other wives who are awake. The whole process is to enliven the sleeping
conditioned souls to the real life of spiritual consciousness so that they may
thus become as perfect as the ever-liberated souls in the Vaikuhalokas.
Since the Lord is sac-cid-nanda-vigraha [Bs. 5.1], He likes every part and
parcel of His different potencies to take part in the blissful rasa because
participation with the Lord in his eternal rsa-ll is the highest living
condition, perfect in spiritual bliss and eternal knowledge.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.5.24
2. The sakrtana movement is the pastime of Lord
Caitanya:
The sakrtana movement inaugurated by Lord Caitanya is a
transcendental pastime of the Lord. "By it I live simultaneously to preach
and popularize this movement in the material world." In that sakrtana
movement of Lord Caitanya, Nitynanda and Advaita are His expansions,
and Gaddhara and rvsa are His internal and marginal potencies. The
living entities are also called marginal potency because they have,
potentially, two attitudesnamely the tendency to surrender unto Ka
and the tendency to become independent of Him. Due to the propensity for
material enjoyment, the living entity becomes contaminated by the material
world. When a living entity is dominated by a desire for material enjoyment
and becomes entangled in material life, he is subjected to the threefold
miseries of material existence. He is just like a seed sown in the earth. If a
seed is overpowered by too much water, there is no possibility of its
fructifying. Similarly, if a man is captivated by material enjoyment, and
even if the seed of such enjoyment is within the heart of the conditioned
soul, he can be overpowered by a flood of transcendental activities
performed in love of God. In this way his potential seed cannot fructify into
a conditional life of material existence. The conditioned living entities in
21
the material world, especially in the present age of Kali, are overpowered by
the flood of love of God inaugurated by Lord Caitanya and His associates.
TLC, Ch. 17
3. Lord Caitanya's desire is to spread His mercy throughout
the world:
The special function of rla Rpa Gosvm is to establish the feelings of
r Caitanya Mahprabhu. These feelings are His desires that His special
mercy be spread throughout the world in this Kali-yuga.
pthivte che yata nagardi grma
sarvatra pracra haibe mora nma
His desire is that all over the world everyone, in every village and every
town, know of r Caitanya Mahprabhu and His sakrtana movement.
These are the inner feelings of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. r Rpa
Gosvm committed to writing all these feelings of the Lord. Now again, by
the mercy of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, the same feelings are being spread
all over the world by the servants of the Gosvms.... Those who are on the
level of hogs and dogs will never appreciate such a great attempt. Yet this
does not matter to the preachers of r Caitanya Mahprabhu's cult, for all
over the world they will continue to perform this responsible work, even
though persons who are like cats and dogs do not appreciate them.
Cc. Antya 1.117
4. Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu liberated all living entities in
the universe:
[r Caitanya Mahprabhu said,] "On this earth there are many living
entities ... some moving and some not moving. What will happen to the trees,
plants, insects and other living entities? How will they be delivered from
22
material bondage?"
Haridsa hkura replied, "My dear Lord, the deliverance of all moving
and nonmoving living entities takes place only by Your mercy. You have
already granted this mercy and delivered them.... When Your devotee
Vsudeva Datta submitted his plea at Your lotus feet for the deliverance of
all living entities, You accepted that request. My dear Lord, You have
accepted the form of a devotee just to deliver all the fallen souls of this
world. You have preached the loud chanting of the Hare Ka mah-mantra
and in this way freed all moving and nonmoving living entities from material
bondage."
r Caitanya Mahprabhu replied, "If all living entities were liberated, the
entire universe would be devoid of living beings."
Haridsa said, "My Lord, as long as You are situated within the material
world, You will send to the spiritual sky all the developed moving and
nonmoving living entities in different species. Then again You will awaken
the living entities who are not yet developed and engage them in activities."
There are many unmanifested living entities covered by the mode of
ignorance who will gradually come to the mode of passion. Most of them will
become criminals because of their fruitive activities and again fill the prisons.
"My dear Lord, You have set a plan in motion by descending on the
material world, but no one can understand how You are acting. Formerly,
when Lord Ka descended in Vndvana, He freed all living entities in the
universe from material existence in the same way.... By descending as an
incarnation at Navadvpa, You, just like Ka, have already delivered all the
living entities of the universe."
Cc. Antya 3.67-68, 74-80, 82-83, 86
5. The Lord descended as r Caitanya Mahprabhu to
deliver the entire world:
Advaita crya was always absorbed in thoughts of how to deliver the
fallen souls of the entire world. "The entire world is full of nondevotees,"
23
He thought. "How will they be delivered?" Determined to deliver all the
fallen souls, Advaita crya decided to cause Ka to descend. With this
vow, He began to offer Ganges water and tulas leaves to worship the Lord.
Similarly, Haridsa hkura chanted in his cave on the bank of the Ganges
with the intention to cause Ka's descent. Because of the devotional
service of these two persons; Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu descended as an
incarnation. Thus He preached the holy name of the Lord and ecstatic love
of Ka to deliver the entire world.
Cc Antya 3.223-226
6. The Lord has inaugurated the Hare Ka movement for
the benefit of human society:
Whenever the principles of religion deteriorate and the principles of
irreligion increase, the supreme controller, the Personality of Godhead r
Hari, appears by His own will.
In the present age, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has appeared as
r Caitanya Mahprabhu to inaugurate the Hare Ka movement. At the
present time, in Kali-yuga, people are extremely sinful and bad.... They have
no idea of spiritual life and are misusing the benefits of the human form to
live like cats and dogs. Under these circumstances r Caitanya
Mahprabhu has inaugurated the Hare Ka movement, which is not
different from Ka, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If one associates
with this movement, he directly associates with the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. People should take advantage ... and thus gain relief from all the
problems created in this age of Kali.
rmad-Bhgavatam 9.24.56
7. Out of compassion, the Lord tries to liberate the fallen
souls:
24
[Gajendra prayed,] "Since an animal such as I has surrendered unto You,
who are supremely liberated, certainly You will release me from this
dangerous position. Indeed, being extremely merciful, You incessantly try to
deliver me...."
Only Ka can deliver us from this material existence. Indeed, He is
always trying to deliver us.... He is within our hearts and is not at all
inattentive. His only aim is to deliver us from material life. It is not that He
becomes attentive to us only when we offer prayers to Him. Even before we
offer our prayers, He incessantly tries to deliver us. He is never lazy in
regard to our deliverance.... It is the causeless mercy of the Supreme Lord
that He always tries to bring us back home, back to Godhead. God is
liberated, and He tries to make us liberated, but although He is constantly
trying, we refuse to accept His instructions.... Nonetheless, He has not
become angry. Therefore He is described here as bhri-karuya,
unlimitedly merciful in delivering us from this miserable material condition
of life and taking us back home, back to Godhead.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.3.17
8. The Ka consciousness movement is nondifferent from
the pastimes performed by Lord Caitanya; it is overflooding
the entire world with mercy:
The activities of r Caitanya Mahprabhu are just like an ocean of
nectar. Even a drop of this ocean can inundate all the three worlds.
To inundate the three worlds with nectar is the purpose of the pastimes
of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. How this could be possible was exhibited by
rla Raghuntha Gosvm and later by hkura Narottama dsa and
ymnanda Gosvm, who all represented the mercy of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu. Now that same mercy is overflooding the entire world
through the Ka consciousness movement. The present Ka
consciousness movement is nondifferent from the pastimes performed by
25
r Caitanya Mahprabhu when He was personally present, for the same
principles are being followed and the same actions performed without fail.
Cc. Antya 5.88
9. The Lord sends His representatives to remove the
miseries of life:
Material existence is full of undesirables. Things we do not want are
forced upon us by some superior energy, and we do not see that these
undesirables are under the grip of the three modes of material nature....
undesirable happenings in life cannot be checked by any number of plans.
Such miseries can be removed only by the mercy of the Lord, who sends His
bona fide representatives to enlighten human beings and thus save them
from all calamities.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.14.11
10. The Lord's plan is to end the living entities' suffering:
... because He [the Lord] wants to maintain the creation, He desires the
mass of people to follow the right path of self-realization, which enables the
living beings to enter into the kingdom of God. The Lord wants the
suffering human beings to come back home, back to Him, and cease to
suffer the threefold material pangs. The whole plan of creation is made in
that way, and one who does not come to his senses suffers in the material
world by pangs inflicted by the illusory energy of the Lord.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.10.2
11. The Lord desires to bring all the living entities back to
His kingdom:
26
... the Lord is equally affectionate to all His parts and parcels, despite
material gradation. He descends only to recall these materialistic living
beings back to His kingdom, and intelligent persons take advantage of this
facility offered by the Personality of Godhead to all living beings. No one is
rejected by the Lord from the kingdom of God, and it remains with the
living being to accept this or not.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.11.22
12. The Lord gives the fallen souls the chance for the
highest perfection of life:
The Lord is ever increasingly merciful upon the fallen souls of this
material world. The whole cosmic manifestation is a chance for all to
improve themselves in devotional service to the Lord, and everyone is
meant for that purpose.... The Lord gives the fallen souls the chance for this
highest perfection of life.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.25
13. The Lord wants the suffering living beings to go back
home, back to Godhead:
Sometimes He [the Lord] incarnates Himself or empowers a suitable
living being to act for Him, but in either case the purpose is the same.... The
Lord, therefore, comes to propagate the message of the kingdom of God,
either personally as an incarnation or through His bona fide representative
as the good son of God. Such incarnations or sons of God are not making
propaganda for going back to Godhead only within the human society.
Their work is also going on in all types of societies, amongst demigods and
those other than human beings.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.2.34
27
14. The Lord is very kind to the forgetful souls:
The Lord is very kind to the forgetful souls. He therefore comes Himself
and leaves behind necessary instructions and also sends His good sons as
representatives to call all the conditioned souls back to Godhead. Recently,
within the memory of everyone, Lord Caitanya also appeared for the same
purpose: to show special favor to fallen souls of this age of iron industry.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.3.9
15. How the Lord helps reclaim the conditioned souls:
... unalloyed devotees of the Lord appear on the earth just to execute the
mission of the Lord. The Lord desires the conditioned souls hovering in the
material creation to be reclaimed to go back home, back to Godhead, and
thus He helps them by preparing the transcendental literatures like the
Vedas, by sending missionaries of saints and sages and by deputing His
representative, the spiritual master.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.12.16
16. The Lord's greatest glory: His causeless mercy upon the
conditioned souls:
"The Vedic reciters or the personified Vedas sing thus: 'O
unconquerable, You are the Supreme Personality. No one is equal to You or
greater than You. No one can be more glorious in His activities. All glories
unto You! All glories unto You! By Your own transcendental nature You
fully possess all six opulences. As such, You are able to deliver all
conditioned souls from the clutches of my. O Lord, we fervently pray that
You kindly do so.... The conditioned souls are struggling very hard to escape
28
from the material bondage, and according to their different conditions of
life they have been given different types of engagement. But all
engagements are based on Your knowledge. Pious activities can be executed
only when inspired by Your mercy. Therefore, without taking shelter at
Your lotus feet one cannot surpass the influence of material energy.
Actually, we, as personified Vedic knowledge, are always engaged in Your
service to help the conditioned soul understand You.' "
This prayer of the Vedas personified illustrates that the Vedas are meant
for helping the conditioned souls to understand Ka. All the rutis or
personified Vedas offered glories to the Lord again and again, singing, "Jaya!
Jaya!" This indicates that the Lord is praised for His glories. Of all His
glories the most important is His causeless mercy upon the conditioned
souls in reclaiming them from the clutches of my.
Ka, Ch. 18
17. Ka comes to rescue the fallen souls:
Because we have forgotten Ka, Ka has given us all these Vedas and
Puras. Ka also comes into this material world in order to remind us of
Himself. In this Kali-yuga, people are forgetting Ka more and more. They
are not even interested in Him, but Ka is interested because we are His
sons. A mad son may no longer be interested in his home, in his father or
mother, yet the father never loses interest in his son. He is anxious because
his boy has left home and is suffering. Similarly, Ka's son leaves the
spiritual sky and takes up one material body after another and in this way
travels from one planet to another in different species of life. Therefore
Ka comes to rescue him.
TLK Ch. 16, texts 39-40
Chapter II
29
It Is the Duty of the Devotee to Preach
1. The brahmacr must daily collect alms for the spiritual
master:
sya prta cared bhaiksya
gurave tan nivedayet
The brahmacr should go out morning and evening to collect alms, and
he should offer all that he collects to the spiritual master.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.12.5
2. It is the duty of every disciple to preach:
Spreading Ka consciousness is r Caitanya Mahprabhu's mission;
therefore His sincere devotees must carry out His desire.... The devotees of
Lord Caitanya must preach Ka consciousness in every village and town
in the world. That will satisfy the Lord. It is not that one should act
whimsically for his own personal satisfaction. This order comes down
through the parampar system, and the spiritual master presents these
orders to the disciple so that he can spread the message of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu. It is the duty of every disciple to carry out the order of the
bona fide spiritual master and spread Lord Caitanya's message all over the
world.
Cc. Madhya 16.64
3. Lord Caitanya's order to preach:
30
yre dekha, tre kaha 'ka'-upadea
mra jya guru ha tra' ei dea
[Cc. Madhya 7.128]
"Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord r Ka as they are
given in Bhagavad-gt and rmad-Bhgavatam. In this way become a
spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land."
Cc. Madhya 7.128
4. Lord Caitanya instructs everyone to preach:
In this age of Kali, people cannot follow the instructions of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, and therefore the Lord Himself takes the part of
r Ka Caitanya to teach personally how to become Ka conscious. He
asks everyone to follow Him and to become a guru to deliver the fallen souls
of Kali-yuga.
yre dekha, tre kaha 'ka'-upadea
mra jya guru ha tra' ei dea
"Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord r Ka as they are
given in Bhagavad-gt and rmad-Bhgavatam. In this way become a
spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land." (Cc. Madhya
7.128)
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.1.16
5. Lord Caitanya advised His followers to preach:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu advised His followers to increase the numbers
of Vaiavas.... It is r Caitanya Mahprabhu's wish that everyone should
become a Vaiava and guru. Following the instructions of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu and His disciplic succession, one can become a spiritual
31
master, for the process is very easy. One can go everywhere and anywhere
to preach the instructions of Ka. Bhagavad-gt is Ka's instructions;
therefore the duty of every Vaiava is to travel and preach Bhagavad-gt,
either in his country or a foreign country.
Cc. Madhya 24.277
6. Lord Caitanya orders that the devotee should preach:
A devotee must carry out the order of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. Caitanya Mahprabhu said, yre dekha, tre kaha 'ka'-upadea
[Cc. Madhya 7.128]. Every devotee, therefore, should spread Ka
consciousness by preaching, asking whomever he meets to accept the order
of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord says, sarva-dharmn
parityajya mm eka araa vraja: [Bg. 18.66] "Abandon all varieties of
religion and just surrender unto Me." This is the order of the Lord, who
speaks as the supreme emperor. Everyone should be induced to accept this
order, for this is victory (dig-vijaya). And it is the duty of the soldier, the
devotee, to impress upon everyone this philosophy of life
rmad-Bhgavatam 9.11.25 (IX:2, p 127)
7. A devotee who tries to preach is first class:
As far as the field of spiritual activities is concerned, when a devotee is
self-satisfied and does not preach the glories of Ka, he is not considered a
first-class devotee. A devotee who tries to preach, who has compassion upon
innocent persons who have no knowledge of Ka, is a superior devotee. In
his prayer to the Lord, Prahlda Mahrja said that he was not personally
interested in liberation from this material world; rather, he did not wish to
be liberated from this material condition until all fallen souls are delivered.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.17.26
32
8. Lord Caitanya orders that all accept and distribute Ka
consciousness:
"Since the tree of devotional service is transcendental, every one of its
parts can perform the action of all the others. Although a tree is supposed to
be immovable, this tree nevertheless moves. All the parts of this tree are
spiritually cognizant, and thus as they grow up they spread all over the
world. I am the only gardener. How many places can I go? How many fruits
can I pick and distribute? It would certainly be a very laborious task to pick
the fruits and distribute them alone, and still I suspect that some would
receive them and others would not. Therefore I order every man within this
universe to accept this Ka consciousness movement and distribute it
everywhere. I am the only gardener. If I do not distribute these fruits, what
shall I do with them? How many fruits can I alone eat? By the
transcendental desire of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, water has been
sprinkled all over the tree, and thus there are innumerable fruits of love of
Godhead. Distribute this Ka consciousness movement all Over the world.
Let people eat these fruits and ultimately become free from old age and
death."
Cc. di 9.32-39
9. Serious students of the Ksa consciousness movement
must preach devotional service all over the world:
Serious students of this Ka consciousness movement must understand
their great responsibility to preach the cult of Vndvana (devotional
service to the Lord) all over the world.... I am very hopeful that some of our
students can take up this responsibility and render the best service to
humanity by educating people in Ka consciousness.
Cc. Madhya 23.104
33
10. Devotees should rise from the neophyte stage to the
preaching platform:
Everyone is eligible to become Ka's devotee. One simply has to be
trained according to the approved process. It is the work of Ka's
confidential devotees to turn everyone into a ka-bhakta. If the
confidential devotees do not take up the task of elevating everyone to
Ka consciousness, then who will do it? Those who claim to be devotees
but do not engage in Ka's service to elevate all living creatures to Ka
consciousness are to be considered kaniha-adhikrs (people in the lowest
stage of devotional service). When one rises to the second platform of
devotional service, his business is to propagate Ka consciousness all over
the world. Those who are active in the Ka consciousness movement
should not remain in the neophyte stage but should rise to the platform of
preachers, the second platform of devotional service. Devotional service is
so enchanting that even the first-class devotees (uttama-adhikrs) also
come down to the second platform to preach and render service to the Lord
for the benefit of the whole world.
Cc. Madhya 24.205
11. The devotee's interest is to actively preach Ksa
consciousness:
He [the devotee] is not interested in so-called meditation in the
Himalayas or the forest. Rather, his interest is in the busiest part of the
world, where he teaches people Ka consciousness. The Ka
consciousness movement was started for this purpose.... The members of the
Ka consciousness movement are not at all interested in so-called
meditation in the Himalayas or the forest, where one will only make a show
of meditation, nor are they interested in opening many schools for yoga and
meditation in the cities. Rather, every member of the Ka consciousness
34
movement is interested in going door to door to try to convince people
about the teachings of Bhagavad-gt As It Is, the teachings of Lord
Caitanya. That is the purpose of the Hare Ka movement. The members
of the Ka consciousness movement must be fully convinced that without
Ka one cannot be happy.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.9.44
12. After being saved, the devotee should preach Ka
consciousness:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu also advised Vsudeva to preach about Ka
and thus liberate living entities. As a result, Ka would very soon accept
him as His devotee.
Although Vsudeva Vipra was a leper and had suffered greatly, still r
Caitanya Mahprabhu cured him. The only return the Lord wanted was
that Vsudeva preach the instructions of Ka and liberate all human
beings. That is the process of the International Society for Krishna
Consciousness. Each and every member of this Society was rescued from a
very abominable condition, but now they are engaged in preaching the cult
of Ka consciousness.... If one wants to be recognized as a devotee by
Ka, he should take to preaching work, following the advice of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu. Then one will undoubtedly attain the lotus feet of
r Ka Caitanya, Lord Ka Himself, without delay.
Cc. Madhya 7.148
13. Lord Caitanya wants his followers to preach all over the
world:
"Dear Lord, Your personal associates, devotees, wander all over the world
to purify even the holy places of pilgrimage. Is not such activity pleasing to
those who are actually afraid of material existence?"
35
There are two kinds of devotees. One is called gohy-nand and the
other bhajannand. The word bhajannand refers to the devotee who does
not move but remains in one place. Such a devotee is always engaged in the
devotional service of the Lord. He chants the mah-mantra as taught by
many cryas and sometimes goes out for preaching work. The
gohy-nand is one who desires to increase the number of devotees all over
the world. He travels all over the world just to purify the world and the
people residing in it. Caitanya Mahprabhu advised: pthivte che yata
nagardi grma/ sarvatra pracra haibe mora nma. Lord Caitanya
Mahprabhu wanted His followers to move all over the world and preach in
every town and village. In the Caitanya-sampradya those who strictly
follow the principles of Lord Caitanya must travel all over the world to
preach the message of Lord Caitanya, which is the same as preaching the
words of KaBhagavad-gt and rmad-Bhgavatam. The more the
devotees preach the principles of ka-kath, the more people throughout
the world will benefit.
Devotees like the great sage Nrada who travel all over to preach are
called gohy-nand. Nrada Muni is always wandering throughout the
universe just to create different types of devotees. Nrada even made a
hunter a devotee. He also made Dhruva Mahrja and Prahlda devotees.
Actually all devotees are indebted to the great sage Nrada, for he has
wandered both in heaven and in hell. A devotee of the Lord is not even
afraid of hell. He goes to preach the glories of the Lord everywhereeven
in hellbecause there is no distinction between heaven and hell for a
devotee.
nryaa-par sarve
na kutacana bibhyati
svargpavarga-narakev
api tulyrtha-darina
"A pure devotee of Nryaa is never afraid of going anywhere and
everywhere. For him heaven and hell are one and the same."
(rmad-Bhgavatam 6.17.28)
36
Such devotees, wandering all over the world, deliver those who are
actually afraid of this material existence.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.30.37
14. The devotee's duty is to preach Ksa consciousness for
the benefit of those suffering the pangs of material
existence:
The word tmaupamyena refers to thinking others to be like oneself. One
can very intelligently conclude that without devotional service, without
becoming Ka conscious, one cannot be happy. Therefore the duty of all
devotees is to preach Ka consciousness everywhere all over the world,
because all living entities without Ka consciousness are suffering the
pangs of material existence. To preach Kna consciousness is the best
welfare activity. Indeed, it is described by r Caitanya Mahprabhu as
para-upakra, work for the true benefit of others.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.7.53
15. All devotees must preach:
When a person actually revives his consciousness with thoughts of Ka
by the mercy of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, he revives his spiritual life and
becomes addicted to the service of the Lord. Only then can he act as an
crya. In other words, everyone should engage in preaching, following in
the footsteps of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. In this way one will be very
much appreciated by Lord Ka and will quickly be recognized by Him.
Actually a devotee of r Caitanya Mahprabhu must engage in preaching
in order to increase the followers of the Lord. By thus preaching actual
Vedic knowledge all over the world, one will benefit all mankind.
Cc. Madhya 7.153
37
16. One should preach to relieve Lord Caitanya's anxiety
for the fallen souls:
"How will these yavanas be delivered? To My great unhappiness, I do not
see any way."
Haridsa hkura replied, "My dear Lord, do not be in anxiety. Do not
be unhappy to see the condition of the yavanas in material existence."
These words of Haridsa hkura are just befitting a devotee who has
dedicated his life and soul to the service of the Lord. When the Lord is
unhappy because of the condition of the fallen souls, the devotee consoles
Him, saying, "My dear Lord, do not be in anxiety." This is service. Everyone
should adopt the cause of r Caitanya Mahprabhu to try to relieve Him
from the anxiety He feels. This is actually service to the Lord. One who
tries to relieve r Caitanya Mahprabhu's anxiety for the fallen souls is
certainly a most dear and confidential devotee of the Lord.
Cc. Antya 3.51-52
17. The devotee must preach; this will help him advance in
self-realization:
"If a living entity is developed in Ka consciousness and is merciful to
others, and if his spiritual knowledge of self-realization is perfect, he will
immediately attain liberation from the bondage of material existence."
In this verse the word day jveu, meaning mercy to other living entities,
indicates that a living entity must be merciful to other living entities if he
wishes to make progress in self-realization. This means he must preach this
knowledge after perfecting himself and understanding his own position as
an eternal servant of Ka. Preaching this is showing real mercy to living
entities. Other types of humanitarian work may be temporarily beneficial
for the body, but because a living entity is spirit soul, ultimately one can
38
show him real mercy only by revealing knowledge of his spiritual existence.
As Caitanya Mahprabhu says, jvera 'svarpa' haya-kera 'nitya-dsa.'
[Cc. Madhya 20.108]. "Every living entity is constitutionally a servant of
Ka." One should know this fact perfectly and should preach it to the
mass of people. If one realizes that he is an eternal servant of Ka but does
not preach it, his realization is imperfect. rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat
hkura therefore sings, dua mana, tumi kisera vaiava? pratihra tare,
nirjanera ghare, tava hari-nma kevala kaitava. "My dear mind, what kind of
Vaiava are you? Simply for false prestige and a material reputation you
are chanting the Hare Ka mantra in a solitary place." In this way people
who do not preach are criticized. There are many Vaiavas in Vndvana
who do not like preaching; they chiefly try to imitate Haridsa hkura.
The actual result of their so-called chanting in a secluded place, however, is
that they sleep and think of women and money. Similarly, one who simply
engages in temple worship but does not see to the interests of the mass of
people, or cannot recognize devotees, is called a kaniha-adhikr:
arcym eva haraye
pj ya raddhayehate
na tad-bhakteu cnyeu
sa bhakta prkta smta
(SB 11.2.47)
A devotee who faithfully engages in the worship of the Deity in the
temple but does not behave properly toward other devotees or people in
general is called a prkta-bhakta, a materialistic devotee, and is considered
to be in the lowest position.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.29.1b
18. One should preach all over the world:
The Lord is always ready to help the fallen souls, but because they are
fools and rascals, they do not take to Ka consciousness and abide by the
instructions of Ka. Therefore although r Caitanya Mahprabhu is
39
personally the Supreme Lord, Ka, He comes as a devotee to preach the
Ka consciousness movement. Yre dekha, tre kaha 'ka'-upadea [Cc.
Madhya 7.128]. One must therefore become a sincere servant of Ka.
mra jya guru ha tra' ei dea (Cc. Madhya 7.128). One should
become a guru and spread Ka consciousness all over the world, simply by
preaching the teachings of Bhagavad-gt.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.9.41
19. The duty of the disciple is to distribute the
transcendental message for others' welfare, without
material motive:
The life of a sincere devotee of the Lord is thus explained in a nutshell
by Nrada Muni by his personal example. Such a devotee, after his
initiation by the Lord or His bona fide representative, takes very seriously
chanting of the glories of the Lord and traveling all over the world so that
others may also hear the glories of the Lord. Such devotees have no desire
for material gain. They are conducted by one single desire: to go back to
Godhead. This awaits them in due course on quitting the material body.
Because they have the highest aim of life, going back to Godhead, they are
never envious of anyone, nor are they proud of being eligible to go back to
Godhead. Their only business is to chant and remember the holy name,
fame and pastimes of the Lord and, according to personal capacity, to
distribute the message for others' welfare without motive of material gain.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.6.26
20. The devotee should preach ka-kath for the benefit
of human society:
In the impure state of a living being, the respective senses are fully
engaged in mundane affairs. If the ear is not engaged in the service of the
40
Lord by hearing about Him in the Bhagavad-gt or in the
rmad-Bhgavatam, certainly the holes of the ear will be filled up with
some rubbish. Therefore the messages of the Bhagavad-gt and the
rmad-Bhgavatam should be preached all over the world very loudly. That
is the duty of a pure devotee who has actually heard about them from the
perfect sources.... There are hundreds and thousands of sources for
distributing mundane news of the world, and people of the world are also
receiving them. Similarly, the people of the world should be taught to hear
the transcendental topics of the Lord, and the devotee of the Lord must
speak loudly so that they can hear.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.3.20
23. As servants of society, devotees of the Lord travel
everywhere to preach:
The servants of the Lord are actually the servants of society. They have
no interest in human society other than to enlighten it in transcendental
knowledge; they are interested in imparting knowledge of the relationship
of the living being with the Supreme Lord, the activities in that
transcendental relationship, and the ultimate goal of human life.... Without
this knowledge, the human life is baffled. The servants of the Lord, Viu,
are entrusted with this responsible work, and so they wander over the earth
and to all other planets in the universe.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.4.25
22. Lord Caitanya personally demonstrated the importance
of preaching:
To deliver all fallen souls, the Lord traveled from country to country. He
personally tasted the transcendental pleasure of devotional service, and He
simultaneously spread the cult of devotion everywhere.
41
r Caitanya Mahprabhu personally traveled to different regions of
India to spread the bhakti cult throughout the country.... By His personal
behavior He has given an example for devotees to follow. That is, one
should broadcast the cult of devotional service.... A Vaiava is especially
interested in para-upakra, doing good to others. Prahlda Mahrja was
also interested in this. He did not want to be delivered alone; rather he
wanted to deliver all fallen souls, who are bereft of knowledge of bhakti and
who misuse their intelligence for the temporary benefit of the material
body. r Caitanya Mahprabhu also wanted His mission spread all over the
world.
pthivte che yata nagardi-grma
sarvatra pracra haibe mora nma
"In every town and village, the chanting of My name will be heard."
Following in His footsteps, we are trying to broadcast His message
throughout the world. By His mercy, people are taking this movement very
seriously. Indeed, our books are extensively distributed in the Western
countries, especially in America and Europe.... The followers of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu may therefore take this movement seriously and
broadcast it throughout the world, from village to village and from town to
town, just as r Caitanya Mahprabhu Himself did.
Cc. Madhya 25.264
23. The Ka consciousness movement is based on
becoming Ka conscious and making others Ksa
conscious:
"My dear child, continue dancing, chanting and performing sakrtana in
association with devotees. Furthermore, go out and preach the value of
chanting ka-nma for by this process You will be able to deliver all fallen
souls."
42
It is another ambition of the spiritual master to see his disciples not only
chant, dance and follow the regulative principles but also preach the
sakrtana movement to others in order to deliver them, for the Ka
consciousness movement is based on the principle that one should become
as perfect as possible in devotional service oneself and also preach the cult
for others' benefit.
Cc. di 7.92
24. An advanced and empowered devotee preaches:
"A person who has attracted the attention of the spiritual master by his
sincere service likes to dance and chant with similarly developed Ka
conscious devotees. The spiritual master authorizes such a devotee to deliver
fallen souls in all parts of the world. Those who are not advanced prefer to
chant the Hare Ka mantra in a solitary place." ...everyone should
endeavor to preach the cult of r Caitanya Mahprabhu in all parts of the
world and thus become successful in spiritual life. One who is not very
expert in preaching may chant in a secluded place, avoiding bad association,
but for one who is actually advanced, preaching and meeting people who
are not engaged in devotional service are not disadvantages. A devotee
gives the nondevotees his association but is not affected by their
misbehavior. Thus by the activities of a pure devotee even those who are
bereft of love of Godhead get a chance to become devotees of the Lord one
day.
Cc. di 7.92
25. The duty of all sane men is to save the people in
general:
Parkit Mahrja ... anxiously wanted to know from ukadeva Gosvm
how humanity can be saved from gliding down to hell.... Intelligent men
must take advantage of these instructions. Unfortunately, however, the
43
entire world is lacking Ka consciousness, and therefore people are
suffering from the grossest ignorance and do not even believe in a life after
this one. To convince them of their next life is very difficult because they
have become almost mad in their pursuit of material enjoyment.
Nevertheless, our duty, the duty of all sane men, is to save them.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.1.6
26. One should preach about the importance of human life
throughout the world:
The followers of Vedic literature ... are privileged to glorify the Lord by
following the directions of Vedic literature. After realizing the glories of
human life, such people should take up the mission to spread the
importance of human life throughout the whole world. This is the mission
of r Caitanya Mahprabhu.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.6.13
27. Preachers go door to door to enlighten the people in
general:
The great saint Jaa Bharata described both the miserable condition and
the means to get out. The only way out of it is association with devotees,
and this association is very easy. Although unfortunate people also get this
opportunity, due to their great misfortune they cannot take shelter of pure
devotees, and consequently they continuously suffer. Nonetheless, this
Ka consciousness movement insists that everyone take to this path by
adopting the chanting of the Hare Ka mah-mantra. The preachers of
Ka consciousness go from door to door to inform people how they can be
relieved from the miserable conditions of material life.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.14.39
44
28. Devotees of Lord Caitanya take the responsibility to
preach:
The devotees who have taken shelter of the lotus feet of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu take the responsibility for distributing nectarean devotional
service all over the world. They are like clouds pouring water on the ground
that nourishes the fruit of love of Godhead in this world. The devotees eat
that fruit to their heart's content, and whatever remnants they leave are
eaten by the general populace. Thus they live happily.
Cc. Madhya 25.276
29. The duty of saintly persons is to reestablish the
principles of religion:
At the end of every four yugas, the great saintly persons, upon seeing that
the eternal occupational duties of mankind have been misused, reestablish
the principles of religion.
From Satya-yuga to Kali-yuga, the principles of religion and occupational
duty gradually deteriorate.... At the end of Kali-yuga, the principles of
religion, or the occupational duties of humanity, are almost lost. Indeed, in
this Kali-yuga we have passed through only five thousand years, yet the
decline of santana-dharma is very prominent. The duty of saintly persons,
therefore, is to take up seriously the cause of santana-dharma and try to
reestablish it for the benefit of the entire human society. The Ka
consciousness movement has been started according to this principle....
Therefore, following in the footsteps of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, who five
hundred years ago inaugurated the movement of sakrtana, ... we are trying
to introduce this movement, according to superior orders, all over the
world. Now, if the inaugurators of this movement strictly follow the
regulative principles and spread this movement for the benefit of all human
society, they will certainly usher in a new way of life by reestablishing
45
santana-dharma, the eternal occupational duties of humanity.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.14.4
30. Followers of the stra endeavor to preach:
Advaita crya was always absorbed in thoughts of how to deliver the
fallen souls of the entire world. "The entire world is full of nondevotees,"
He thought. "How will they be delivered?"
rla Advaita crya sets the standard for cryas in the
Vaiava-sampradya. An crya must always be eager to deliver the fallen
souls.... One who knows the conclusion of the stras, follows in the
footsteps of his predecessors and endeavors to preach the bhakti cult all over
the world is to be considered an crya.
Cc. Antya 3.223
31. Followers of Lord Nitynanda must preach Ka
consciousness:
When Lord Nitynanda returned to Bengal to preach the cult of bhakti,
love of Godhead, He began touring all over the country. For two
purposesto spread the cult of bhakti and to defeat and subdue the
atheistsLord Nitynanda, the most dedicated devotee of the Lord, moved
throughout the country.
Lord Ka appears in every millennium for two purposes, namely to
deliver the devotees and kill the nondevotees. His devotees also have two
similar purposesto preach the bhakti cult of Ka consciousness and
defeat all kinds of agnostics and atheistic demons. Nitynanda Prabhu
carried out the order of Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu in this way, and
those who strictly follow Nitynanda Prabhu perform the same activities.
Cc. Antya 3.148-149
46
32. One should preach; that is real nonviolence:
Nonviolence is generally taken to mean not killing or destroying the
body, but actually nonviolence means not to put others into distress. People
in general are trapped by ignorance in the material concept of life, and they
perpetually suffer material pains. So, unless one elevates people to spiritual
knowledge, one is practicing violence. One should try his best to distribute
real knowledge to the people, so that they may become enlightened and
leave this material entanglement. That is nonviolence.
Bg. 13.8-12
33. Understanding the purpose of the Lord, the devotee
preaches:
Bewildered by the modes of material nature, the ignorant fully engage
themselves in material activities and become attached. But the wise should
not unsettle them, although these duties are inferior due to the performers'
lack of knowledge.
Men who are ignorant cannot appreciate activities in Ka
consciousness, and therefore Lord Ka advises us not to disturb them and
simply waste valuable time. But the devotees of the Lord are more kind than
the Lord because they understand the purpose of the Lord. Consequently
they undertake all kinds of risks, even to the point of approaching ignorant
men to try to engage them in the acts of Ka consciousness, which are
absolutely necessary for the human being.
Bg. 3.29
34. A brhmaa must preach:
These different orders of society and grades of spiritual advancement are
conceived in terms of qualification. It is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gt
47
that the four social orders and the four spiritual orders are created by the
Lord Himself, in terms of different individual qualities. As the different
parts of the body have different types of activities, so the social orders and
spiritual orders also have different types of activities in terms of
qualification and position.... one has to act according to his position, and by
such activities one must either satisfy the Supreme Personality or else fall
down from his position.
For example, a brhmaa who is born out of the head of the Lord has as
his business to preach the transcendental Vedic sounds, or abda-brahma.
Because the brhmaa is the head, he has to preach the transcendental
sound, and he also has to eat on behalf of the Supreme Lord. According to
Vedic injunctions, when a brhmaa eats it is to be understood that the
Personality of Godhead is eating through him. It is not, however, that the
brhmaa should simply eat on behalf of the Lord and not preach the
message of the Bhagavad-gt to the world. Actually, one who preaches the
message of the Gt is very dear to Ka, as is confirmed in the Gt itself.
Such a preacher is factually a brhmaa....
NOD Ch. 2
35. One who preaches the gospel of Bhagavad-gt is perfect
in pure devotional service:
Ka wants everyone to surrender unto Him, and devotional service
means preaching this gospel all over the world. The Lord says openly in
Bhagavad-gt (18.69): na ca tasmn manuyeu kacin me priya-kttama.
One should preach the gospel of Bhagavad-gt for the benefit of all.
Bhagavad-gt is spoken by the Lord so that human society can be perfectly
organized from all angles of visionpolitically, socially, economically,
philosophically and religiously. From any point of view, human society can
be reformed by the Ka consciousness movement; therefore one who
spreads this philosophy of Ka consciousness for the benefit of all
conditioned souls in the universe is perfect in pure devotional service.
48
Cc. Madhya 19.167
36. Pure devotees preach and deliver conditioned souls:
The Ganges water is celebrated as being able to eradicate all kinds of
sinful reactions. In other words, when a person takes his bath in the
Ganges, he becomes freed from all life's contaminations. The Ganges water
is celebrated in this way because it emanates from the lotus feet of the
Supreme Personality of Godhead. Similarly, those who are directly in touch
with the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and who are
absorbed in the chanting of His glories are freed from all material
contamination. Such unalloyed devotees are able to show mercy to the
common conditioned soul. rla Vndvana dsa hkura has sung that the
devotees of Lord Caitanya are so powerful that each one of them can
deliver a universe. In other words, it is the business of devotees to preach
the glories of the Lord and deliver all conditioned souls to the platform of
uddha-sattva, pure goodness.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.24.58
37. The greatest service is preaching a Vaisnava is
recognized by his preaching work:
"If one releases a conditioned soul or imprisoned person according to
religious principles, he himself is also released from material bondage by the
Supreme Personality of Godhead."
The greatest service one can render to the Lord is to try to infuse
devotional service into the heart of the conditioned soul so that the
conditioned soul may be released from conditional life. rla Bhaktivinoda
hkura has said that a Vaiava is recognized by his preaching workthat
is, by convincing the conditioned soul about his eternal position.... It is the
living entity's eternal position to serve the Lord; therefore to help one get
49
release from material bondage is to awaken one to the dormant
understanding that he is the eternal servant of Ka.
Cc. Madhya 20.6
38. The test of a Vaisnava is how many Vaisnavas he has
made:
rla Bhaktivinoda hkura said that the position of a Vaiava can be
tested by seeing how good a touchstone he isthat is, by seeing how many
Vaiavas he has made during his life. A Vaiava should be a touchstone
so that he can convert others to Vaiavism by his preaching, even though
people may be fallen like the hunter. There are many so-called advanced
devotees who sit in a secluded place for their personal benefit. They do not
go out to preach and convert others into Vaiavas, and therefore they
certainly cannot be called spara-mai, advanced devotees.
Kaniha-adhikr devotees cannot turn others into Vaiavas, but a
madhyama-adhikr Vaiava can do so by preaching.
Cc. Madhya 24.277
39. Performing daily rituals of devotional service is not
enoughone must preach, and in such preaching not be
concerned for success or failure:
The favorable conditions for discharging devotional service are that one
should be very enthusiastic in serving the Lord. The Lord in His form of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu wanted the cult of devotional service to the Lord to
be preached all over the world, in every nook and corner, and therefore a
pure devotee's duty is to discharge this order as far as possible. Every
devotee should be very enthusiastic, not only in performing his daily rituals
of devotional service, but in trying to preach the cult peacefully by
following in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya. If he is not superficially
50
successful in such an attempt, he should not be deterred from the discharge
of his duty. Success or failure has no meaning for a pure devotee because he
is a soldier in the field. Preaching the cult of devotional service is something
like declaring war against materialistic life.... A devotee should see to the
right discharge of devotional service under the guidance of a bona fide
spiritual master and should not stick only to the formalities. Under the
direction of the bona fide spiritual master ... one should see how much
service is being executed, and not simply in the matter of rituals.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.8.21
40. Contrary to the order of Lord Caitanya, some of His
modern so-called followers do not preach:
It is the desire of Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu that the benevolent
activities of the sakrtana movement which was inaugurated five hundred
years ago in Navadvpa be spread all over the world for the benefit of all
human beings. Unfortunately, there are many so-called followers of
Caitanya Mahprabhu who are satisfied simply to construct a temple, make
a show of the Deities, collect some funds and utilize them for eating and
sleeping. There is no question of their preaching the cult of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu all over the world, but even though they are unable to do so, if
anyone else does it they become envious. This is the condition of the
modern followers of Caitanya Mahprabhu. The age of Kali is so strong that
it affects even the so-called followers of Lord Caitanya. At least the
followers of Caitanya Mahprabhu must come out of India to preach His
cult all over the world, for this is the mission of Lord Caitanya. The
followers of Lord Caitanya must execute His will with heart and soul, being
more tolerant than the trees and humbler than the straw in the street.
Cc. di 9.47
41. There must be an organized effort to turn nondevotees
51
into devotees:
... the only reformation that is necessary in society is to make an
organized effort to turn the citizens into devotees of the Lord, and thus all
good qualities of the denizens of heaven will overtake them in their own
way.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.11.19
42. The mission of all genuine devotees is to preach:
All glories and success to rla Nrada Muni because he glorifies the
activities of the Personality of Godhead, and so doing he himself takes
pleasure and also enlivens all the distressed souls of the universe.
No one is happy here within the universe, and what is felt as happiness is
my's illusion. The illusory energy of the Lord is so strong that even the
hog who lives on filthy stool feels happy.... rla Nrada Muni, in order to
enlighten the miserable inhabitants, wanders everywhere. His mission is to
get them back home, back to Godhead. That is the mission of all genuine
devotees of the Lord following the footsteps of that great sage.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.6.38
43. A sdhu is meant to preach:
A sdhu like Vidura is meant to awaken such blind persons [like
Dhtarra] and thus help them go back to Godhead, where life is eternal.
Once going there, no one wants to come back to this material world of
miseries. We can just imagine how responsible a task is entrusted to a sdhu
like Mahtm Vidura.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.13.23
52
44. The duty of enlightened souls is to deliver the fallen
ones:
Vidura particularly came to enlighten Dhtarra and to give him a lift
to the higher status of spiritual cognition. It is the duty of enlightened souls
to deliver the fallen ones, and Vidura came for that reason.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.13.14
45. A saintly person desires everyone to become Ka
conscious:
Because everyone is under the delusion of my and is forgetful of his
prime duty, Ka consciousness, a saintly person always desires that
everyone become a saintly person. It is the function of a saintly person to
invoke Ka consciousness in every forgetful man.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.22.7
46. Devotees must preach all over the world, as ordered by
the spiritual master:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu's devotional cult teaches one not to sit down
in one place but to spread the devotional cult all over the world. The Lord
dispatched Santana Gosvm and Rpa Gosvm to Vndvana to excavate
and renovate the holy places and from there establish the cult of bhakti.
Therefore Vndvana was given to Santana Gosvm and Rpa Gosvm
as their place of residence. Similarly, everyone in the line of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu's devotional cult should accept the words of the spiritual
master and thus spread the Ka consciousness movement. They should go
everywhere, to all parts of the world, accepting those places as prabhu-datta
dea, the places of residence given by the spiritual master or Lord Ka.
53
The spiritual master is the representative of Lord Ka; therefore one who
has carried out the orders of the spiritual master is understood to have
carried out the orders of Ka or r Caitanya Mahprabhu. r Caitanya
Mahprabhu wanted to spread the bhakti cult all over the world (pthivte
che yata nagardi grma). Therefore devotees in the line of Ka
consciousness must go to different parts of the world and preach, as ordered
by the spiritual master. That will satisfy r Caitanya Mahprabhu.
Cc. Antya 4.144
47. The Ka consciousness movement has been set up to
distribute knowledge:
Knowledge is meant for distribution. Although there is already much
scientific knowledge, whenever scientists or philosophers awaken to a
particular type of knowledge, they try to distribute it throughout the world,
for otherwise the knowledge gradually dries up and no one benefits from it.
India has the knowledge of Bhagavad-gt, but unfortunately, for some
reason or other, this sublime knowledge of the science of God was not
distributed throughout the world, although it is meant for all of human
society. Therefore Ka Himself appeared as r Caitanya Mahprabhu
and ordered all Indians to take up the cause of distributing the knowledge
of Bhagavad-gt throughout the entire world. Yre dekha, tre kaha
'ka'-upadea/ mra jya guru ha tra' ei dea. "Instruct everyone to
follow the orders of Lord r Ka as they are given in Bhagavad-gt and
rmad-Bhgavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to
liberate everyone in this land." (Cc. Madhya 7.128) Although India has the
sublime knowledge of Bhagavad-gt, Indians have not done their proper
duty of distributing it. Now, therefore, the Ka consciousness movement
has been set up to distribute this knowledge as it is, without distortion.
Although previously there were attempts to distribute the knowledge of
Bhagavad-gt, these attempts involved distortion and compromise with
mundane knowledge. But now the Ka consciousness movement, without
mundane compromises, is distributing Bhagavad-gt as it is, and people are
54
deriving the benefits of awakening to Ka consciousness and becoming
devotees of Lord Ka. Therefore the proper distribution of knowledge has
begun by which not only will the whole world benefit, but India's glory will
be magnified in human society.
rmad-Bhgavatam 10.2.19
48. In our Ksa consciousness movement, all our activities
are concentrated on book distribution:
The word kriysu, meaning "by manual labor" or "by work," is important
in this verse. One should engage in practical service to the Lord. In our
Ka consciousness movement all our activities are concentrated upon
distributing Ka literature. This is very important. One may approach any
person and induce him to read Ka literature so that in the future he may
also become a devotee. Such activities are recommended in this verse....
Such activities will always remind the devotees of the Lord's lotus feet. By
fully concentrating on distributing books for Ka, one is fully absorbed in
Ka. This is samdhi.
rmad-Bhgavatam 10.2.37
49. A sdhu's duty is to enlighten others:
Caitanya Mahprabhu has stated that He wants every village in the
entire world to be a center for Ka consciousness so that people can take
advantage of sdhus and in turn become sdhus. This is the mission of this
Ka consciousness movement.... At the same time, we have to take
compassion upon fallen souls by going from town to town to enlighten
others in Ka consciousness. This is a sdhu's duty.
TLK Ch. 11, text 24

Chapter III
Preaching Ka Consciousness Is the Highest Welfare
Activity
1. Devotees (preachers) are the greatest well-wishers of
living entities:
Persons who are not in Ka consciousness are living a very precarious
life ... but all these circumstantial conditions are due to forgetfulness of
Ka. The Ka consciousness movement is meant to give relief to all
these bewildered and distressed persons; therefore it is the greatest relief
work for all human society, and the workers thereof are the greatest
well-wishers, for they follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya, who is the
greatest friend to all living entities.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.7.28
2. Preaching ka-kath is the greatest missionary activity:
Ka-kath is the only remedy for all people of the world because it can
situate one in pure consciousness of the self and liberate one from material
bondage. To preach ka-kath all over the world, as recommended by
Lord Caitanya, is the greatest missionary activity, and all sensible men and
women of the world may join in this great movement started by Lord
Caitanya.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.5.11
56
3. Preaching is the best welfare activity:
The word tmaupamyena refers to thinking others to be like oneself. One
can very intelligently conclude that without devotional service, without
becoming Ka conscious, one cannot be happy. Therefore the duty of all
devotees is to preach Ka consciousness everywhere all over the world,
because all living entities without Ka consciousness are suffering the
pangs of material existence. To preach Ka consciousness is the best
welfare activity. Indeed, it is described by r Caitanya Mahprabhu as
para-upakra, work for the true benefit of others.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.7.53
4. Preaching the knowledge of the living entity's spiritual
existence is the highest welfare work:
... [the living entity] must preach this knowledge [of self-realization] after
perfecting himself and understanding his own position as an eternal servant
of Ka. Preaching this is showing real mercy to living entities. Other
types of humanitarian work may be temporarily beneficial for the body, but
because a living entity is spirit soul, ultimately one can show him real mercy
only by revealing knowledge of his spiritual existence. As Caitanya
Mahprabhu says, jvera 'srarpa' haya-kera 'nitya-dsa.' "Every living
entity is constitutionally a servant of Ka." One should know this fact
perfectly and should preach it to the mass of people.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.29.1b
5. Preaching Ka consciousness is the highest welfare
activity (the Lord is pleased with one who preaches):
It is said that great personalities almost always accept voluntary suffering
57
because of the suffering of people in general. This is considered the highest
method of worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is present
in everyone's heart.
Here is an explanation of how those engaged in activities for the welfare
of others are very quickly recognized by the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. The Lord says in Bhagavad-gt (18.68-69), ya ida parama
guhya mad-bhaktev abhidhsyati ... na ca tasmn manuyeu kacin me
priya-kttama: "One who preaches the message of Bhagavad-gt to My
devotees is most dear to Me. No one can excel him in satisfying Me by
worship." There are different kinds of welfare activities in this material
world, but the supreme welfare activity is the spreading of Ka
consciousness. Other welfare activities cannot be effective, for the laws of
nature and the results of karma cannot be checked.... If one tries to spread
Ka consciousness all over the world, he should be understood to be
performing the best welfare activity. The Lord is automatically very pleased
with him. If the Lord is pleased with him, what is left for him to achieve? If
one has been recognized by the Lord, even if he does not ask the Lord for
anything, the Lord, who is within everyone, supplies him whatever he
wants.... The best welfare activity is raising people to the platform of Ka
consciousness, since the conditioned souls are suffering only for want of
Ka consciousness.... All the stras conclude, therefore, that spreading
the Ka consciousness movement is the best welfare activity in the world.
Because of the ultimate benefit this bestows upon people in general, the
Lord very quickly recognizes such service performed by a devotee.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.7.44
6. Preaching of Krna consciousness is real mercy:
... we also must know what actual mercy is. To give a sick man something
forbidden for him to eat is not mercy. Rather, it is cruelty. Unless we know
what mercy really is, we may create an undesirable situation. If we wish to
show real mercy, we will preach Ka consciousness in order to revive the
58
lost consciousness of human beings, the living entity's original
consciousness.
Cc. Madhya 9.49
7. Devotee-preachers are engaged in the highest welfare
work:
The self-effulgent Vaikuha planets, by whose illumination alone all the
illuminating planets within this material world give off reflected light, cannot
be reached by those who are not merciful to other living entities. Only
persons who constantly engage in welfare activities for other living entities
can reach the Vaikutha planets.
From this material world ... people can be transferred to the
Vaikuhaloka, if they incessantly engage in welfare activities for all other
living entities. Such incessant welfare activities can really be performed
only in Ka consciousness. There is no other philanthropic work within
this material world but Ka consciousness, which can engage a person
twenty-four hours a day.
A Ka conscious being is always engaged in planning how to take all
the suffering humanity back home, back to Godhead. Even if one is not
successful in reclaiming all the fallen souls back to Godhead, still, because
he is Ka conscious, his path to Vaikuhaloka is open. He personally
becomes qualified to enter the Vaikuhalokas, and if anyone follows such a
devotee, he also enters into Vaikuhaloka. Others, who engage in envious
activities, are known as karms. Karms are envious of one another.... Jns
are not as sinful as karms, but they do not try to reclaim others back to
Godhead. They perform austerities for their own liberation. Yogs are also
engaged in self-aggrandizement by trying to attain mystic powers. But
devotees, Vaiavas, who are servants of the Lord, come forward in the
actual field of work in Ka consciousness to reclaim fallen souls.... the
Lord says that there is no one dearer to Him than those who preach the
gospel of Bhagavad-gt to the world.
59
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.12.36
8. r Caitanya Mahprabhu's sakrtana movement is
meant for making people happy:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu is the most benevolent personality in human
society because His only desire is to make people happy. His sakrtana
movement is especially meant for the purpose of making people happy.
Cc. di 9.45
9. Distribution of transcendental knowledge is the highest
welfare work:
Pthu Mahraja continued: How can such persons, who have rendered
unlimited service by explaining the path of self realization in relation to the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, and whose explanations are given for our
enlightenment with complete conviction and Vedic evidence, be repaid
except by folded palms containing water for their satisfaction? Such great
personalities can be satished only by their own activities, which are
distributed amongst human society out of their unlimited mercy.
Great personalities of the material world are very eager to render welfare
service to human society, but actually no one can render better service than
one who distributes the knowledge of spiritual realization in relation with
the Supreme Personality of Godhead. All living entities are within the
clutches of the illusory energy. Forgetting their real identity, they hover in
material existence, transmigrating from one body to another in search of a
peaceful life. Since these living entities have very little knowledge of
self-realization, they are not getting any relief, although they are very
anxious to attain peace of mind and some substantial happiness. Saintly
persons like the Kumras, Nrada, Prahlda, Janaka, ukadeva Gosvm,
Kapiladeva, as well as the followers of such authorities as the Vaiava
60
cryas and their servants, can render a valuable service to humanity by
disseminating knowledge of the relationship between the Supreme
Personality of Godhead and the living entity. Such knowledge is the perfect
benediction for humanity.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.22.4
10. Preaching Ka consciousness is showing real mercy to
living entities:
"If a living entity is developed in Ka consciousness and is merciful to
others, and if his spiritual knowledge of self-realization is perfect, he will
immediately attain liberation from the bondage of material existence."
In this verse the word day jvesu, meaning mercy to other living entities,
indicates that a living entity must be merciful to other living entities if he
wishes to make progress in self-realization. This means he must preach this
knowledge after perfecting himself and understanding his own position as
an eternal servant of Ka. Preaching this is showing real mercy to living
entities. Other types of humanitarian work may be temporarily beneficial
for the body, but because a living entity is spirit soul, ultimately one can
show him real mercy only by revealing knowledge of his spiritual existence.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.29.1b
11. Distribution of rmad-Bhgavatam all over the world is
a great welfare activity:
The secret of success is unknown to people in general, and therefore
rla Vysadeva, being compassionate toward the poor souls in this material
world, especially in this age of Kali, has given us the rmad-Bhgavatam....
For Vaisavas who are somewhat advanced, or who are fully aware of the
glories and potencies of the Lord, rmad-Bhgavatam is a very beloved
Vedic literature. After all, we have to change this body (tath
61
dehntara-prpti [Bg. 2.13]). If we do not care about Bhagavad-gt and
rmad-Bhgavatam, we do not know what the next body will be. But if one
adheres to these two literaturesBhagavad-gt and
rmad-Bhgavatamone is sure to obtain the association of Ka in the
next life. Therefore, distribution of rmad-Bhgavatam all over the world is
a great welfare activity for theologians, philosophers, transcendentalists and
yogs as well as for people in general.
rmad-Bhgavatam 10.12.7-11
12. Distribution of transcendental literature benefits human
society:
There are so many unwanted literatures full of materialistic ideas of
sense gratification.... The people in general want to read (that is a natural
instinct), but because their minds are polluted they want such literatures.
Under the circumstances, transcendental literature like rmad-Bhgavatam
will not only diminish the activities of the corrupt mind of the people in
general, but also it will supply food for their hankering after reading some
interesting literature. In the beginning they may not like it because one
suffering from jaundice is reluctant to take sugar candy, but we should know
that sugar candy is the only remedy for jaundice. Similarly, let there be
systematic propaganda for popularizing reading of the Bhagavad-gt and
the rmad-Bhgavaram, which will act like sugar candy for the jaundicelike
condition of sense gratification. When men have a taste for this literature,
the other literatures, which are catering poison to society, will then
automatically cease.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.5.11
13. An intelligent man must perform welfare activities:
"By his work, thoughts and words, an intelligent man must perform
actions which will be beneficial for all living entities in this life and in the
62
next."
[Quoted from Viu Pura 3.12.45]
Cc. di 9.43
14. Preaching Ka consciousness is the only remedy
which can bring world peace:
In this material world, everyone is trying to counteract the onslaught of
material nature, but everyone is ultimately fully controlled by material
nature.... So-called scientists, philosophers, religionists and politicians
should therefore conclude that they cannot offer facilities to the people in
general. They should make vigorous propaganda to awaken the populace
and raise them to the platform of Ka consciousness. Our humble attempt
to propagate the Ka consciousness movement all over the world is the
only remedy that can bring about a peaceful and happy life. We can never
be happy without the mercy of the Supreme Lord....
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.9.19
15. Spreading Ka consciousness renders eternal benefits
to human society:
Different people may accept certain welfare activities to be beneficial for
human society, according to their own views, but the welfare activity that
can be rendered to people in general, for eternal benefit, is the spreading of
the Ka consciousness movement. Everyone should be prepared to
propagate this movement.
Ka, Ch. 22
16. Spreading Ka consciousness is the highest benefit for
63
society:
My dear Arjuna, one who is engaged in My pure devotional service, free
from the contaminations of previous activities and from mental speculation,
who is friendly to every living entity, certainly comes to Me.
A devotee of Ka is friendly to everyone. Therefore it is said here that
he has no enemy. How is this? A devotee situated in Ka consciousness
knows that only devotional service to Ka can relieve a person from all
the problems of life. He has personal experience of this, and therefore he
wants to introduce this system, Ka consciousness, into human society.
There are many examples in history of devotees of the Lord risking their
lives for the spreading of God consciousness. The favorite example is Lord
Jesus Christ. He was crucified by the nondevotees, but He sacrificed His life
for spreading God consciousness.... Similarly, in India also there are many
examples, such as hkura Haridsa. Why such risk? Because they wanted
to spread Ka consciousness, and it is difficult. A Ka conscious person
knows that if a man is suffering, it is due to his forgetfulness of his eternal
relationship with Ka. Therefore, the highest benefit one can render to
human society is relieving one's neighbor from all material problems. In
such a way, a pure devotee is engaged in the service of the Lord.
Bg. 11.55
17. A Krna conscious preacher is the best friend of
everyone:
He is a perfect yog who, by comparison to his own self, sees the true
equality of all beings, both in their happiness and distress, O Arjuna!
One who is Ka conscious is a perfect yog; he is aware of everyone's
happiness and distress by dint of his own personal experience. The cause of
the distress of a living entity is forgetfulness of his relationship with God.
And the cause of happiness is knowing Ka to be the supreme enjoyer of
all the activities of the human being. Ka is the proprietor of all lands and
64
planets. The perfect yog is the sincerest friend of all living entities. He
knows that the living being who is conditioned by the modes of material
nature is subjected to the threefold material miseries due to forgetfulness of
his relationship with Ka. Because one in Ka consciousness is happy,
he tries to distribute the knowledge of Ka everywhere. Since the perfect
yog tries to broadcast the importance of becoming Ka conscious, he is
the best philanthropist in the world, and he is the dearest servitor of the
Lord. Na ca tasmn manuyeu kacin me priya-kttama [Bg. 18.69]. In other
words, a devotee of the Lord always looks to the welfare of all living entities,
and in this way he is factually the friend of everyone. He is the best yog
because he does not desire perfection in yoga for his personal benefit, but
tries for others also. He does not envy his fellow living entities. Here is a
contrast between a pure devotee of the Lord and a yog interested only in
his personal elevation. The yog who has withdrawn to a secluded place in
order to meditate perfectly may not be as perfect as a devotee who is trying
his best to turn every man toward Ka consciousness.
Bg. 6.32
18. Preaching is the highest welfare activity:
One who is beyond duality and doubt, whose mind is engaged within, who
is always busy working for the welfare of all sentient beings, and who is free
from all sins, achieves liberation in the Supreme.
Only a person who is fully in Ka consciousness can be said to be
engaged in welfare work for all living entities. When a person is actually in
the knowledge that Ka is the fountainhead of everything, then when he
acts in that spirit he acts for everyone. The sufferings of humanity are due
to forgetfulness of Ka as the supreme enjoyer, the supreme proprietor,
and the supreme friend. Therefore, to act to revive this consciousness
within the entire human society is the highest welfare work. One cannot be
engaged in first-class welfare work without being liberated in the Supreme.
A Ka conscious person has no doubt about the supremacy of Ka. He
has no doubt because he is completely freed from all sins. This is the state of
65
divine love.
A person engaged only in ministering to the physical welfare of human
society cannot factually help anyone. Temporary relief of the external body
and the mind is not satisfactory. The real cause of one's difficulties in the
hard struggle for life may be found in one's forgetfulness of his relationship
with the Supreme Lord. When a man is fully conscious of his relationship
with Ka, he is actually a liberated soul, although he may be in the
material tabernacle.
Bg. 5.25
19. The Ka consciousness movement renders the highest
benefit to human society:
rla Rpa Gosvm has given a definition of auspiciousness. He says that
actual auspiciousness means welfare activities for all the people of the
world. At the present moment groups of people are engaged in welfare
activities in terms of society, community or nation. There is even an
attempt in the form of the United Nations for world-help activities. But due
to the shortcomings of limited national activities, such a general mass
welfare program for the whole world is not practically possible. The Ka
consciousness movement, however, is so nice that it can render the highest
benefit to the entire human race. Everyone can be attracted by this
movement, and everyone can feel the result. Therefore, Rpa Gosvm and
other learned scholars agree that a broad propaganda program for the Ka
consciousness movement of devotional service all over the world is the
highest humanitarian welfare activity.
NOD Ch. 1
20. One should spend fifty percent of his income for
preaching:
66
Mahrja Parkit, therefore, like his grandfather Arjuna, collected all
illicit gold kept for the propensities of Kali and employed it in the
sakrtana-yaja, as per instruction of the rmad-Bhgavatam. As we have
suggested before, one's accumulated wealth may be divided into three parts
for distribution, namely fifty percent for the service of the Lord,
twenty-five percent for the family members and twenty-five percent for
personal necessities. Spending fifty percent for the service of the Lord or
for propagation of spiritual knowledge in society by way of the
sakrtana-yaja is the maximum display of human mercy. People of the
world are generally in darkness regarding spiritual knowledge, especially in
regard to the devotional service of the Lord, and therefore to propagate the
systematic transcendental knowledge of devotional service is the greatest
mercy that one can show in this world.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.17.42
21. The highest act of philanthropy is to engage everyone in
preaching:
The highest perfectional project of philanthropic activities is to engage
everyone in the act of preaching bhakti-yoga all over the world because that
alone can save the people from the control of my, or the material nature
represented by kla, karma and gua.... The Bhagavad-gt ... confirms this
definitely.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.13.46
22. The flaws of human society are corrected by the
preaching of rmad-Bhgavatam:
The preaching of the Bhgavatam principles will automatically render all
men austere, clean both inside and outside, merciful to the suffering, and
67
truthful in daily behavior. That is the way of correcting the flaws of human
society, which are very prominently exhibited at the present moment.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.17.24
23. Preaching rmad-Bhgavatam purifies the world:
... in the absence of a suitable king to curb irreligious tendencies,
educating the people systematically in the teaching of rmad-Bhgavatam
will clear up the hazy atmosphere of corruption, bribery, blackmail, etc.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.17.27
24. Sakrtana drives away the effects of Kali-yuga:
Therefore, O friend of irreligion, you do not deserve to remain in a place
where experts perform sacrifices according to truth and religious principles
for the satisfaction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
In this age of Kali, the greatest common formula of sacrifice is the
sakrtana-yaja. That is the opinion of the experts who know how to
propagate the process of yaja. Lord Caitanya preached this method of
yaja, and it is understood from this verse that the sacrificial method of
sakrtana-yaja may be performed anywhere and everywhere in order to
drive away the personality of Kali and save human society from falling prey
to the influence of the age.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.17.33
Chapter IV
Ka Consciousness Should Be Distributed to Everyone,
68
Without Restriction
1. The sakrtana movement should be preached without
restriction:
Not considering who asked for it and who did not, nor who was fit and
who unfit to receive it, Caitanya Mahprabhu distributed the fruit of
devotional service.
This is the sum and substance of Lord Caitanya's sakrtana movement.
There is no distinction made between those who are fit and those who are
not fit to hear or take part in the sakrtana movement. It should therefore
be preached without discrimination. The only purpose of the preachers of
the sakrtana movement must be to go on preaching without restriction.
That is the way in which r Caitanya Mahprabhu introduced this
sakrtana movement to the world.
Cc. di 9.29
2. The preachers approach everyone impartially:
... vednta-vds, or the bhakti-vedntas, are impartial in distributing the
transcendental knowledge of devotional service. To them no one is enemy
or friend; no one is educated or uneducated. No one is especially favorable,
and no one is unfavorable. The bhakti-vedntas see that the people in
general are wasting time in false sensuous things. Their business is to get the
ignorant mass of people to reestablish the lost relationship with the
Personality of Godhead. By such endeavor, even the most forgotten soul is
roused up to the sense of spiritual life, and thus being initiated by the
bhakti-vedntas, the people in general gradually progress on the path of
transcendental realization.
69
Bhg 1.5.24
3. Ka consciousness should be distributed to everyone,
without discrimination:
With great respect, r Caitanya Mahprabhu requested Advaita crya,
"Give Ka consciousness, devotion to Ka, even to the lowest of men
[calas]."
This is r Caitanya Mahprabhu's order to all His devotees.
Ka-bhakti, devotion to Ka, is open to everyone, even low-class men
like calas. One should follow this order in the disciplic succession
stemming from r Advaita and Nitynanda Prabhu and distribute Ka
consciousness without discrimination throughout the world.
There are different kinds of men, beginning with the brhmaa and
going down to the lowest platform known as cala. Whatever one's
position, everyone in this age of Kali needs to be enlightened in Ka
consciousness. That is the greatest need of the day. Everyone is acutely
feeling the pangs of material existence.... everyone is feeling the resultant
pinpricks of Kali-yuga brought about by human society's indulging in illicit
sex, meat-eating, gambling and intoxication. Now is the time for the
members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness to
distribute ka-bhakti all over the world and thus follow the orders of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu. The Lord has ordered everyone to become a guru
(Cc. Madhya 7.128).... Everyone in every town and village should be
enlightened by the instructions of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. Ka
consciousness should be distributed to everyone indiscriminately. In this
way, the entire world will be peaceful and happy, and everyone will glorify
r Caitanya Mahprabhu, as He desires.
The word cala actually refers to a dog-eater, who is considered the
lowest of men. Even calas can be enlightened in Ka consciousness
due to r Caitanya Mahprabhu's benedictions. Ka-bhakti is not the
monopoly of a certain caste. Everyone is eligible to receive this great
70
benediction given by r Caitanya Mahprabhu. Everyone should be given a
chance to receive it and be happy.
Cc. Madhya 15.41
4. The Ka consciousness movement should be spread
everywhere, to everyone, without restriction:
In distributing love of Godhead, Caitanya Mahprabhu and His associates
did not consider who was a fit candidate and who was not, nor where such
distribution should or should not take place. They made no conditions.
Wherever they got the opportunity the members of the Panca-tattva
distributed love of Godhead.
... here is an authoritative statement that in distributing love of Godhead
one should not consider whether the recipients are Europeans, Americans,
Hindus, Muslims, etc. The Ka consciousness movement should be spread
wherever possible... r Caitanya Mahprabhu desired that His name be
spread in each and every town and village on the surface of the globe.
Cc. di 7.23
5. Ka-kath should be preached without restriction:
There are two important ka-kaths current in the
worldBhagavad-gt and rmad-Bhgavatam.... Lord Caitanya advised all
His disciples to preach ka-kath all over the world without
discrimination because the transcendental value of ka-kath can purify
one and all from material contamination.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.5.10
6. Ka consciousness should be distributed
71
unconditionally:
"Now please hear from me about the process of devotional service, which
is applicable in any country, for any person, at all times and in all
circumstances."
The cult of bhgavata-dharma can be spread in all circumstances, among
all people and in all countries.... r Caitanya Mahprabhu confirms that
devotional service to the Lordthe cult of bhgavata-dharma, which is now
being spread as the Hare Ka movementcan be spread in every country,
for every person, in any condition of life, and in all circumstances.
Cc. Madhya 25.120
Chapter V
One Who Preaches Ka Consciousness Is Dear to Lord
Krna and Is Protected by the Lord
1. The preacher is recognized by Ka:
If one gives the conditioned souls a chance to become Ka conscious,
all his activities are approved by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who
is extremely pleased.... Following the examples of the previous cryas, all
the members of the Ka consciousness movement should try to benefit
the conditioned souls by inducing them to become Ka conscious and
giving them all facilities to do so.... By such activities, a preacher or anyone
who endeavors to spread Ka consciousness is recognized by the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. As the Lord Himself confirms in Bhagavad-gt: ...
"For one who explains the supreme secret to the devotees, devotional
72
service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no
servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one
more dear."
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.4.44
2. A preacher in Brahm's party (Brahma-sampradya) is
very dear to the Lord:
The creation of the material world is not blind or accidental. The living
entities who are ever conditioned, or nitya-baddha, are thus given a chance
for liberation under the guidance of His [Ka's] own representative like
Brahm. The Lord instructs Brahm in Vedic knowledge in order to diffuse
this knowledge to the conditioned souls. The conditioned souls are forgetful
souls in their relationship with the Lord, and thus a period of creation and
the process of dissemination of Vedic knowledge are necessary activities of
the Lord. Lord Brahm has a great responsibility in delivering the
conditioned souls, and therefore he is very dear to the Lord.
Brahm also does his duty very perfectly, not only by generating the
living entities but also by spreading his party for reclaiming the fallen souls.
The party is called the Brahma-sampradya, and any member of this party
to date is naturally engaged in reclaiming the fallen souls back to Godhead,
back home. The Lord is very much anxious to get back His parts and
parcels, as stated in the Bhagavad-gt. No one is more dear than the one
who takes the task of reclaiming the fallen souls back to Godhead.
Anyone ... preaching the mission of the Lord in the line of the
Brahma-sampradya is always dear to the Lord, and the Lord, being satisfied
with such a preacher of the authorized bhakti cult, shakes hands with him in
great satisfaction.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.9.19
3. One who preaches is appreciated by and recognized by
73
Ka
... everyone should engage in preaching, following in the footsteps of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu. In this way one will be very much appreciated by
Lord Ka and will quickly be recognized by Him.
Cc. Madhya 7.153
4. The preacher is very dear to the Lord:
"Therefore, my dear young friends ... show mercy to all living entities by
enlightening them in devotional service, thus becoming their well-wishers."
The Lord says in Bhagavad-gt (18.55), bhakty mm abhijnti yvn ya
csmi tattvata: "One can understand the Supreme Personality as He is only
by devotional service." Prahlda Mahrja ultimately instructed his class
friends, the sons of the demons, to accept the process of devotional service
by preaching the science of Ka consciousness to everyone. Preaching is
the best service to the Lord. The Lord will immediately be extremely
satisfied with one who engages in this service of preaching Ka
consciousness. This is confirmed by the Lord Himself in Bhagavad-gt
(18.69). Na ca tasmn manuyeu kacin me priya-kttama: "There is no
servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one
more dear." If one sincerely tries his best to spread Ka consciousness by
preaching the glories of the Lord and His supremacy, even if he is
imperfectly educated, he becomes the dearmost servant of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. This is bhakti. As one performs this service for
humanity, without discrimination between friends and enemies, the Lord
becomes satisfied, and the mission of one's life is fulfilled. r Caitanya
Mahprabhu therefore advised everyone to become a guru-devotee and
preach Ka consciousness (yre dekha, tre kaha 'ka'-upadea [Cc.
Madhya 7.128]). That is the easiest way to realize the Supreme Personality of
Godhead.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.6.24
74
5. One who preaches (to try to relieve Lord Caitanya of
His anxiety for the fallen souls) is most dear to the Lord:
Everyone should adopt the cause of r Caitanya Mahprabhu to try to
relieve Him from the anxiety He feels. This is actually service to the Lord.
One who tries to relieve r Caitanya Mahprabhu's anxiety for the fallen
souls is certainly a most dear and confidential devotee of the Lord.
Cc. Antya 3.52
6. The Lord is pleased with the preacher (who performs the
highest welfare activity):
It is said that great personalities almost always accept voluntary suffering
because of the suffering of people in general.
If
one has been recognized by the Lord, even if he does not ask the Lord for
75
anything, the Lord, who is within everyone, supplies him whatever he
wants.... The best welfare activity is raising people to the platform of Ka
consciousness, since the conditioned souls are suffering only for want of
Ksa consciousness....
7. The Lord is pleased by a compassionate devotee:
Devahti continued: My dear Lord, please also describe in detail, both for
myself and for people in general, the continual process of birth and death, for
by hearing of such calamities we may become detached from the activities of
this material world.... My dear Lord, You are just like the sun, for You
illuminate the darkness of the conditional life of the living entities. Because
their eyes of knowledge are not open, they are sleeping eternally in that
darkness without Your shelter, and therefore they are falsely engaged by the
actions and reactions of their material activities, and they appear to be very
fatigued.
r Maitreya said: O best amongst the Kurus, the great sage Kapila,
moved by great compassion and pleased by the words of His glorious mother,
spoke as follows.
Lord Kapila was very satisfied by the request of his glorious mother
because she was thinking not only in terms of her personal salvation but in
terms of all the fallen conditioned souls. The Lord is always compassionate
towards the fallen souls of this material world, and therefore He comes
Himself or sends His confidential servants to deliver them. Since He is
perpetually compassionate towards them, if some of His devotees also
become compassionate towards them, He is very pleased with the devotees.
In Bhagavad-gt it is clearly stated that persons who are trying to elevate
the condition of the fallen souls by preaching the conclusion of
76
Bhagavad-gtnamely, full surrender unto the Personality of
Godheadare very dear to Him. Thus when the Lord says that His beloved
mother was very compassionate towards the fallen souls, He was pleased,
and He also became compassionate towards her.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.29.3-6
8. Brhmaa-preachers of Ka consciousness are
worshipable, even by Ka:
As admitted by Lord Ka in Bhagavad-gt (18.69), na ca tasman
manuyeu kacin me priya-kttama. The brhmaas preach the cult of
Ka consciousness all around the world, and therefore, although they
worship Ka, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Lord also
recognizes them as worshipable. The relationship is reciprocal. The
brhmaas want to worship Ka, and similarly Ka wants to worship the
brhmaas.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.14.42
9. Preaching activities satisfy the Lord:
The demigods are called sakma devotees, or devotees with material
desires in mind, while the pure devotees are called nikma devotees
because they have no desires in their personal interests. The sakma
devotees are self-interested because they do not think of others, and
therefore they are not able to satisfy the Lord perfectly, whereas the pure
devotees take the missionary responsibility of turning nondevotees into
devotees, and they are therefore able to satisfy the Lord more than the
demigods.... Sometimes the Lord Himself descends for missionary activities,
as He did in the form of Lord Caitanya, but mostly He sends His bona fide
representatives, and thus He shows His causeless mercy towards the
nondevotees. The Lord is so satisfied with His pure devotees that He wants
77
to give them the credit of missionary success, although He could do the
work personally. This is the sign of His satisfaction with His pure nikma
devotees, compared to the sakma devotees.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.12
10. By preaching, one attains the lotus feet of Lord
Caitanya:
If one wants to be recognized as a devotee by Ka, he should take to
preaching work, following the advice of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. Then
one will undoubtedly attain the lotus feet of r Ka Caitanya, Lord
Ka Himself, without delay.
Cc. Madhya 7.148
11. The devotees who, out of compassion, preach are as
confidential to the Lord as Lord Brahm:
A pure devotee of the Lord like Brahm and persons in his disciplic
succession are always unhappy to see the perplexities of the conditioned
souls, who are suffering the onslaughts of the threefold miseries which
pertain to the body and mind, to the disturbances of material nature and
many other such material disadvantages.... The devotees of the Lord who
voluntarily take the responsibility of raising the foolish materialistic sense
enjoyers are as confidential to the Lord as Lord Brahm.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.8
12. Preachers are very, very dear to Lord Ksa; their
salvation is assured:
78
In the Bhagavad-gt, Eighteenth Chapter, the Lord also states that one
who is engaged in preaching Ka consciousness is very dear to Him. A
preacher has to face many difficulties in his struggle to preach pure Ka
consciousness. Sometimes he has to suffer bodily injuries, and sometimes he
has to meet death also. All this is taken as a great austerity on behalf of
Ka. Ka therefore has said that such a preacher is very, very dear to
Him. If Ka's enemies can expect salvation simply by concentrating their
minds on Him, then what to speak of persons who are so dear to Ka? The
conclusion should be that the salvation of those who are engaged in
preaching Ka consciousness in the world is guaranteed in all
circumstances. But such preachers never care for salvation, because
factually one who is engaged in Ka consciousness, devotional service, has
already achieved salvation.
Kra, Ch. 29
13. Ka takes the preacher back home, back to Godhead:
For one who explains the supreme secret to the devotees, devotional
service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no
servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one
more dear.
Anyone ... who tries sincerely to present Bhagavad-gt as it is will
advance in devotional activities and reach the pure devotional state of life.
As a result of such pure devotion, he is sure to go back home, back to
Godhead.
Bg. 18.68-69(1)
14. Ka is merciful to the preacher; He takes him back
home, back to Godhead:
My dear Arjuna, one who is engaged in My pure devotional service, free
79
from the contaminations of previous activities and from mental speculation,
who is friendly to every living entity, certainly comes to Me.
A devotee situated in Ka consciousness knows that only devotional
service to Ka can relieve a person from all the problems of life. He has
personal experience of this, and therefore he wants to introduce this
system, Ka consciousness, into human society. There are many examples
in history of devotees of the Lord risking their lives for the spreading of
God consciousness.... Why such risk? Because they wanted to spread Ka
consciousness, and it is difficult.... Now, we can imagine how merciful Ka
is to those engaged in His service, risking everything for Him. Therefore it
is certain that such persons must reach the supreme planet after leaving the
body.
Bg. 11.55
15. We are protected when we execute our duty to preach:
Our actual duty is to carry out the supreme order of the Personality of
Godhead. If we are fixed in our determination to carry out the supreme
order of the Lord, we are always secure, regardless of where we are situated,
whether in hell or in heaven.... The devotees in the Ka consciousness
movement are preaching all over the world in accordance with the order of
r Caitanya Mahprabhu. They have to meet many karms, but by the
mercy of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, they are unaffected by material
influences.... A sincere devotee who engages in the service of Lord r
Caitanya Mahprabhu by preaching His cult all over the world will never be
affected by viaya-taraga, material influences. On the contrary, in due
course of time he will return to the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord r
Caitanya Mahprabhu and will thus have perpetual association with Him.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.1.19
80
16. The Lord blesses the preacher:
Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu is the father and inaugurator of the
sakrtana movement. One who worships Him by sacrificing his life, money,
intelligence and words for the sakrtana movement is recognized by the
Lord and endowed with His blessings. All others may be said to be foolish,
for of all sacrifices in which a man may apply his energy, a sacrifice made
for the sakrtana movement is the most glorious.
Cc. di 3.78
17. A preacher of Ka consciousness is protected by Lord
Nsihadeva:
The Supreme Personality of Godhead in His transcendental form of
Narahari, Nsihadeva, is always ready to kill the demons, who always
create disturbances in the minds of honest devotees. To spread the Ka
consciousness movement, devotees have to face many dangers and
impediments all over the world, but a faithful servant who preaches with
great devotion to the Lord must know that Lord Nsihadeva is always his
protector.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.8.51
18. Members of ISKCON should be assured of the Lord's
protection and preach:
In all kinds of danger, they [the members of the Ka consciousness
society] should be confident of their protection by the Viudtas or the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, as confirmed in Bhagavad-gt (kaunteya
pratijnhi na me bhakta praayati, Bg. 9.31). Material danger is not meant
for devotees. This is also confirmed in rmad-Bhgavatam
81
(rmad-Bhgavatam 10.14.58). Pada pada yad vipad na tem: in this
material world there are dangers at every step, but they are not meant for
devotees who have fully surrendered unto the lotus feet of the Lord. The
pure devotees of Lord Viu may rest assured of the Lord's protection, and
as long as they are in this material world they should fully engage in
devotional service by preaching the cult of r Caitanya Mahprabhu and
Lord Ka, namely the Hare Ka movement of Ka consciousness.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.3.18
19. One must constantly pray to the Lord for protection and
the blessings to preach:
Unless one is sufficiently protected by the Lord, he may fall down from
his spiritual position; therefore one has to pray constantly to the Lord for
protection and the blessing to carry out one's duty. Lord Caitanya also
entrusted His missionary work to His devotees and assured them of His
protection against the onslaught of material affection. The path of spiritual
life is stated in the Vedas to be like the edge of a sharpened razor. A little
inattentiveness may at once create havoc and bloodshed, but one who is a
completely surrendered soul, always seeking protection from the Lord in the
discharge of his entrusted duties, has no fear of falling into material
contamination.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.24
20. The pure devotee-preachers are the most confidential
servants of the Lord:
... devotees of the Lord are honored equally with the Lord because they
are engaged in the most confidential service of the Lord, for they deliver
out of the material world the fallen souls whom the Lord wants to return
home, back to Godhead.
82
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.1.15
21. Servants of God preach and thus become dear to the
Lord:
... asuras are gradually rectified to God consciousness by the mercy of the
Lord's liberated servitors in different countries according to the Supreme
will. Such devotees of God are very confidential associates of the Lord, and
when they come to save human society from the dangers of godlessness,
they are known as the powerful incarnations of the Lord, as sons of the
Lord, as servants of the Lord or as associates of the Lord.... Such servants of
God are called mahtms, or trthas, and they preach according to particular
time and place. The servants of God urge people to become devotees of the
Lord....
The servants of God come to propagate God consciousness, and
intelligent people should cooperate with them in every respect. By serving
the servant of God, one can please God more than by directly serving the
Lord. The Lord is more pleased when He sees that His servants are properly
respected because such servants risk everything for the service of the Lord
and so are very dear to the Lord. The Lord declares in the Bhagavad-gt
(18.69) that no one is dearer to Him than one who risks everything to
preach His glory.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.2.16
22. Preachers are most pleasing in the eyes of the Lord:
... confidential devotees of the Lord are very much dear to the Lord
because they travel everywhere to preach the glories of the Lord in
different capacities and try their utmost to convert the nondevotees of the
Lord into devotees in order to bring them to the platform of sanity.... when
one becomes a nondevotee or nonbeliever, it is to be understood that the
83
person concerned is not in a sound condition of life. The confidential
devotees of the Lord treat such illusioned living beings, and therefore they
are most pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. The Lord says in the
Bhagavad-gt that no one is dearer to Him than one who actually preaches
the glories of the Lord to convert the nonbelievers and nondevotees.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.13.38
Chapter VI
Ka Empowers the Preacher: The Ka Consciousness
Movement Spreads by the Mercy of Lord Ka and Lord
84
Caitanya
1. Ka can empower a preacher who is true to r
Caitanya Mahprabhu and to the disciplic succession to
excel Himself:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu continued, "You [Nitynanda Prabhu] can
perform a task that even I cannot do. But for You, I cannot find anyone in
Gaua-dea who can fulfill My mission there."
Lord Caitanya's mission is to deliver the fallen souls of this age. In this
age of Kali, practically cent percent of the population is fallen. r Caitanya
Mahprabhu certainly delivered many fallen souls, but His disciples mainly
came from the upper classes.... It was rla Nitynanda Prabhu, however,
who delivered persons like Jagi and Mdhi.... In the incarnation of
Gaura-Niti, the Lord is not supposed to kill demons but deliver them by
preaching Ka consciousness. In the case of Jagi and Mdhi, r
Caitanya Mahprabhu was so angry that He would have immediately killed
them, but Nitynanda Prabhu was so kind that He not only saved them
from death but elevated them to the transcendental position. Thus what
was not possible for r Caitanya Mahprabhu was carried out by
Nitynanda Prabhu.
Similarly, if one is true to Gaura-Niti's service in the disciplic
succession, he can even excel Nitynanda Prabhu's service. This is the
process of disciplic succession. Nitynanda Prabhu delivered Jagi and
Mdhi, but a servant of Nitynanda Prabhu, by His grace, can deliver
many thousands of Jagis and Mdhis. That is the special benediction of
the disciplic succession. One who is situated in the disciplic succession can
be understood by the result of his activities. This is always true as far as the
activities of the Lord and His devotees are concerned....
By the grace of Viu, a Vaiava can render better service than Viu;
85
that is the special prerogative of a Vaiava. The Lord actually wants to see
His servants work more gloriously than Himself. For instance, on the
Battlefield of Kuruketra, r Ka provoked Arjuna to fight because all
the warriors on the battlefield were to die by Ka's plan. Ka Himself
did not want to take credit.... Therefore He asked him to fight and win
fame....
Thus the Supreme Personality of Godhead gives credit to a devotee who
performs any heavy task perfectly. Hanumnj, or Vajrgaj the servant of
Lord Rmacandra, also serves as another example. It was Hanumnj who
jumped over the sea in one leap and reached the shore of Lak from the
shore of Bhrata-vara. When Lord Rmacandra chose to go there, He
paved the way with stones, although by His will the stones were able to float
on the sea. If we simply follow r Caitanya Mahprabhu's instructions and
follow in the footsteps of r Nitynanda Prabhu, this Ka consciousness
movement can advance, and even more difficult tasks can be performed by
the preachers remaining faithful to the service of the Lord.
Cc. Madhya 16.65
2. To become an empowered preacher, one must be favored
by Lord Caitanya or the spiritual master:
Whoever heard Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu chant, "Hari, Hari," also
chanted the holy name of Lord Hari and Ka. In this way, they all
followed the Lord, very eager to see Him. After some time, the Lord would
embrace these people and bid them to return home, after investing them with
spiritual potency. Being thus empowered, they would return to their own
villages, always chanting the holy name of Ka and sometimes laughing,
crying and dancing. These empowered people used to request everyone and
anyonewhomever they sawto chant the holy name of Ka. In this way
all the villagers would also become devotees of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. Simply by seeing such empowered individuals, people from
different villages would become like them by the mercy of their glance.
86
When these individuals returned to their villages, they also converted others
into devotees. When others came to see them, they were also converted. In
this way, as those men went from one village to another, all the people of
South India became devotees.
This spiritual potency is the essence of the pleasure potency and the
eternity potency. By these two potencies, one is empowered with devotional
service. Lord Ka Himself, or His representative, the unalloyed devotee,
can mercifully bestow these combined potencies upon any man. Being thus
endowed with such potencies, one can become an unalloyed devotee of the
Lord. Anyone favored by Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu was empowered
with this bhakti-akti. Thus the Lord's followers were able to preach Ka
consciousness by divine grace.
In order to become an empowered preacher, one must be favored by Lord
r Caitanya Mahprabhu or His devotee, the spiritual master. One must
also request everyone to chant the mah-mantra. In this way, such a person
can convert others to Vaiavism, showing them how to become pure
devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Cc. Madhya 7.98-104
3. If preachers of Ka consciousness are sincere devotees
of Ka, the Ka consciousness movement will spread by
Ka's grace:
The Ka consciousness movement has spread all over the world within
a very short time (within five years), and mundane people are very
astonished at this. However, by the grace of Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu,
we understand that everything is possible by the grace of Ka. Why does
Ka have to take five years? In five days He can spread His name and
fame all over the world like wildfire. Those who have faith and devotion to
Ka can understand that these things happen so wonderfully by the grace
of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. We are simply the instruments. In the fierce
87
Battle of Kuruketra, Arjuna was victorious within eighteen days simply
because Ka's grace was on his side....
If the preachers in our Ka consciousness movement are sincere
devotees of Ka, Ka will always be with them because He is very kind
and favorable to all His devotees. Just as Arjuna and Ka were victorious
in the Battle of Kuruketra, this Ka consciousness movement will surely
emerge victorious if we but remain sincere devotees of the Lord and serve
the Lord according to the advice of predecessors (the six Gosvms and
other devotees of the Lord).... Within the Society we must try to serve the
predecessors by preaching Caitanya Mahprabhu's cult and spreading His
name and fame all over the world. If we attempt this seriously within the
Society, it will be successfully done. There is no question of estimating how
this will happen in the mundane sense. But without a doubt, it happens by
the grace of Ka.
Cc. Madhya 4.79
4. Members of ISKCON must try to spread the movement;
Lord Caitanya will be pleased and the movement will be
successful:
... the members of ISKCON must increase this movement more and
more, according to the principles that we are presently trying to execute. r
Caitanya Mahprabhu, thus being pleased, will smilingly glance upon them,
bestowing His favor, and the movement will be successful.
Cc. di 9.50
5. If preachers are pure and preach sincerely, their
preaching work will be successful by Lord Caitanya's
blessings:
The members of this [ISKCON] Society must always remember that if
88
they stick to the regulative principles and preach sincerely according to the
instructions of the cryas, surely they will have the profound blessings of
Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu, and their preaching work will be successful
everywhere throughout the world.
Cc. di 7.171
6. A sincere devotee is empowered by the Lord to preach:
For ten days r Caitanya Mahprabhu stayed at Prayga and instructed
Rpa Gosvm, empowering him with the necessary potency.
This is a confirmation of the statement ka-akti vin nahe tra
pravartana. Unless one is specifically empowered by the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, he cannot spread the Ka consciousness
movement. An empowered devotee sees and feels himself to be the lowest of
men, for he knows that whatever he does is due to the inspiration given by
the Lord in the heart. This is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gt:
te satata-yuktn
bhajat prti-prvakam
dadmi buddhi-yoga ta
yena mm upaynti te
"To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give
the understanding by which they can come to Me." (Bg. 10.10)
To be empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one has to
qualify himself. This means that one must engage twenty-four hours daily in
the loving devotional service of the Lord. The material position of a devotee
doesn't matter because devotional service is not dependent on material
considerations. In his earlier life, rla Rpa Gosvm was a government
officer and a ghastha. He was not even a brahmacr or sannys. He
associated with mlecchas and yavanas, but because he was always eager to
serve, he was a qualified recipient for the Lord's mercy. A sincere devotee
can therefore be empowered by the Lord regardless of his situation. In the
89
preceding verse from Bhakti-rasmta-sindhu, rla Rpa Gosvm has
described how he was personally empowered by the Lord. He further states
in Bhakti-rasmta-sindhu (1.2.187):
h yasya harer dsye
karma manas gir
nikhilsv apy avasthsu
jvan-mukta sa ucyate
"A person acting in the service of Ka with his body, mind and words is
a liberated person even in the material world, although he may be engaged in
many so-called material activities."
To keep oneself free from material contamination and attain the Lord's
favor, one must be sincerely anxious to render service to the Lord. This is
the only qualification necessary. As soon as one is favored by the mercy of
the spiritual master and the Lord, one is immediately given all the power
necessary to write books and propagate the Ka consciousness movement
without being hampered by material considerations.
Cc. Madhya 19.135
7. Unless one is empowered by the Lord, one cannot spread
the holy names throughout the world:
To deliver people in regions throughout the Universe who could not meet
Him, r Caitanya Mahprabhu personally entered the bodies of pure
devotees. Thus He empowered living beings [His pure devotees] by
manifesting in them so much of His own devotion that people in all other
countries became devotees by seeing them.
Unless one is empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, r
Caitanya Mahprabhu, one cannot spread the holy names of the Hare
Ka mah-mantra throughout the world. Persons who do so are
empowered. Therefore they are sometimes called vea-avatras or
incarnations, for they are endowed with the power of r Caitanya
90
Mahprabhu.
Cc. Antya 2.13-14
8. The Lord empowers the devotee to preach:
The Supreme Lord has multi-potencies, which the Lord bestows on His
fortunate devotees. The Lord has a special potency by which He spreads the
Ka consciousness movement. This is also explained in
Caitanya-caritmta (Antya 7.11). Ka-akti vin nahe tra pravartana:
"One cannot spread the holy name of Ka without being specifically
empowered by Lord Ka." A devotee who receives this power from the
Lord must be considered very fortunate. The Ka consciousness
movement is spreading to enlighten people about their real position, their
original relationship with Ka. One requires Ka's special power in
order to be able to do this.... The Lord again comes as r Caitanya
Mahprabhu to induce people to take to Ka consciousness. The Lord also
empowers a special devotee to teach people their constitutional position.
Cc. Madhya 19.114
9. A preacher's success depends on Ka's grace:
While preaching Ka consciousness with full vigor, r Caitanya
Mahprabhu faced many Myvd philosophers. Similarly, we are also
facing opposing svms, yogs, impersonalists, scientists, philosophers and
other mental speculators, and by the grace of Lord Ka we successfully
defeat all of them without difficulty.
Cc. di 7.40
10. The secret of success in spreading Ka consciousness
91
is faith in the order of guru and Ka:
Believing in the words of His spiritual master, He [r Caitanya
Mahprabhu] introduced the sakrtana movement, just as the present
Ka consciousness movement was started with belief in the words of our
spiritual master. He wanted to preach, we believed in his words and tried
somehow or other to fulfill them, and now this movement has become
successful all over the world. Therefore faith in the words of the spiritual
master and the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the secret of success. r
Caitanya Mahprabhu never disobeyed the orders of His spiritual master
and stopped propagating the sakrtana movement. r Bhaktisiddhnta
Sarasvat Gosvm, at the time of his passing away, ordered all his disciples
to work conjointly to preach the mission of Caitanya Mahprabhu all over
the world. Later, however, some self-interested, foolish disciples disobeyed
his orders. Each one of them wanted to become head of the mission, and
they fought in the courts, neglecting the order of the spiritual master, and
the entire mission was defeated. We are not proud of this; however, the
truth must be explained. We believed in the words of our spiritual master
and started in a humble wayin a helpless waybut due to the spiritual
force of the order of the supreme authority, this movement has become
successful.
Cc. di 7.95-96
11. The key to successful preaching is in sincerely serving
Lord Caitanya and following the instructions of the cryas:
r Ka Caitanya Mahprabhu and His associates of the Paca-tattva
distributed the holy name of the Lord to invoke love of Godhead throughout
the universe and thus the entire universe was thankful.
Here it is said that Lord Caitanya made the entire universe thankful to
Him for propagating the sakrtana movement with His associates. Lord
Caitanya Mahprabhu has already sanctified the entire universe by His
92
presence five hundred years ago, and therefore anyone who attempts to
serve r Caitanya Mahprabhu sincerely by following in His footsteps and
following the instructions of the cryas will successfully be able to preach
the holy names of the Hare Ka mah-mantra all over the universe.
Cc. di 7.163
12. Without being empowered by Ka, one cannot
preach; the empowered preacher can raise the whole world
to Ka consciousness:
rla Rmnanda Raya replied to r Caitanya Mahprabhu, "My Lord,
You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If You like, You can cause
even a wooden doll to dance. I see that the truths regarding transcendental
mellow that You have expounded through my mouth are all explained in the
writings of rla Rpa Gosvm. Because of Your causeless mercy toward
Your devotees, You want to describe the transcendental pastimes in
Vndvana. Anyone empowered to do this can bring the entire world under
Your influence."
This passage parallels the statement ka-akti vin nahe tra
pravartana, which means that unless empowered by the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, Ka, one cannot spread the holy name of the
Lord throughout the entire world (Cc. Antya 7.11). Under the protection of
the Supreme Personality of Godhead, a pure devotee can preach the holy
name of the Lord so that everyone may take advantage of this facility and
thus become Ka conscious.
Cc. Antya 1.203-205
13. To spread Ka consciousness, one must be empowered
by Ka; the Ka conscious crya should be considered
nondifferent from Ka:
93
In this age of Kali, real religious propaganda should induce people to
chant the Hare Ka mah-mantra. This is possible for someone who is
especially empowered by Ka. No one can do this without being especially
favored by Ka.... rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura ... comments:
"Without being empowered by the direct potency of Lord Ka to fulfill
His desire and without being specifically favored by the Lord, no human
being can become the spiritual master of the whole world.... Only an
empowered personality can distribute the holy name of the Lord and enjoin
all fallen souls to worship Ka. By distributing the holy name of the Lord,
he cleanses the hearts of the most fallen people; therefore he extinguishes
the blazing fire of the material world. Not only that, he broadcasts the
shining brightness of Ka's effulgence throughout the world. Such an
crya, or spiritual master, should be considered nondifferent from
Kathat is, he should be considered the incarnation of Lord Ka's
potency.
Cc. Madhya 25.9
14. One must be empowered by Lord Ka to spread Ka
consciousness:
[Vallabha Bhaa said to Lord Caitanya:] "The fundamental religious
system in the age of Kali is the chanting of the holy name of Ka. Unless
empowered by Ka, one cannot propagate the sakrtana movement. You
have spread the sakrtana movement of Ka consciousness. Therefore it is
evident that You have been empowered by Lord Ka. There is no question
about it. You have manifested the holy name of Ka throughout the entire
world. Anyone who sees You is immediately absorbed in ecstatic love of
Ka. Without being especially empowered by Ka, one cannot manifest
ecstatic love of Ka, for Ka is the only one who gives ecstatic love. That
is the verdict of all revealed scriptures."
Cc Antya 7.11-14
94
15. Compassionate preachers are empowered by the Lord:
Vaiavas, or devotees, are usually very compassionate upon conditioned
souls. Without even being invited, a devotee will go from door to door to
enlighten people and to bring them out of the darkness of nescience by
injecting knowledge of the living entity's constitutional position as a
servant of Lord Ka Such devotees are empowered by the Lord to
distribute devotional consciousness, or Ka consciousness, to the people
in general.
TLC Ch 1
Chapter VII
Preaching Is Based on Compassion
1. The preacher's mood of compassion:
One who identifies himself as a follower of r Caitanya Mahprabhu
should feel like r Caitanya Mahprabhu, who said, ih-sabra kon mate
ha-ibe nistra: "How will all these yavanas be delivered?" r Caitanya
Mahprabhu was always anxious to deliver the fallen souls because their
fallen condition gave Him great unhappiness. That is the platform on which
one can propagate the mission of r Caitanya Mahprabhu.
Cc. Antya 3.51
2. Impelled by knowledge and compassion, the devotee
95
preaches:
Whenever there is disease in any part of the body, the whole body takes
care of the ailing part. Similarly, a devotee's oneness is manifested in his
compassion for all conditioned souls. Bhagavad-gt says, pait
sama-darina: those who are learned see everyone's conditional life
equally. (Bg. 5.18) Devotees are compassionate to every conditioned soul,
and therefore they are known as aprakya-buddhi. Because devotees are
learned and know that every living entity is part and parcel of the Supreme
Lord, they preach Ka consciousness to everyone so that they may be
happy. If a particular part of the body is diseased, the whole attention of the
body goes to that part. Similarly, devotees care for any person who is
forgetful of Ka and therefore in material consciousness. The equal vision
of the devotee is that he works to get all living entities back home, back to
Godhead.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.7.53
3. Out of compassion for living entities, the sdhu preaches:
The symptoms of a sdhu are that he is tolerant, merciful and friendly to
all living entities. He has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the
scriptures, and all his characteristics are sublime.
A sdhu, as described above, is a devotee of the Lord. His concern,
therefore, is to enlighten people in devotional service to the Lord. That is
his mercy. He knows that without devotional service to the Lord, human
life is spoiled. A devotee travels all over the country, from door to door,
preaching, "Be Ka conscious. Be a devotee of Lord Ka. Don't spoil
your life in simply fulfilling your animal propensities. Human life is meant
for self-realization, or Ka consciousness." These are the preachings of a
sdhu. He is not satisfied with his own liberation. He always thinks about
others. He is the most compassionate personality towards all the fallen souls.
One of his qualifications, therefore, is kruika, great mercy to the fallen
96
souls.... He is merciful because he is the well-wisher of all living entities. He
is not only a well-wisher of human society, but a well-wisher of animal
society as well. It is said here, sarva-dehinm, which indicates all living
entities who have accepted a material body. Not only does the human being
have a material body, but other living entities, such as cats and dogs, also
have material bodies. The devotee of the Lord is merciful to everyonethe
cats, dogs, trees, etc. He treats all living entities in such a way that they can
ultimately get salvation from this material entanglement.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.25.21
4. A Vaisava shows compassion toward sinful, suffering
entities:
Prahlda Mahrja is the topmost example of a Vaiava who is always
compassionate toward sinful persons suffering a hellish life within this
material world. Ka is therefore known as para-dukha-dukh
kpmbudhi, or one who is compassionate toward others' suffering and who
is an ocean of mercy. Like Prahlda Mahrja, all pure devotees of the Lord
come to this material world with full compassion to deliver the sinful. They
undergo all kinds of tribulations, suffering them with tolerance, because
that is another qualification of a Vaiava, who tries to deliver all sinful
persons from the hellish conditions of material existence. Vaiavas are
therefore offered the following prayer:
vch-kalpatarubhya ca
kp-sindhubhya eva ca
patitn pvanebhyo
vaiavebhyo namo nama
"I offer my respectful obeisances unto all the Vaiava devotees of the
Lord. They are just like desire trees who can fulfill the desires of everyone,
and they are full of compassion for the fallen conditioned souls."
The chief concern of a Vaiava is to deliver the fallen souls.
97
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.21.47
5. A bona fide devotee is aggrieved to see the fallen
condition of the world:
A bona fide devotee of Lord Ka is always pained to see the fallen
condition of the whole world. rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura used
to say, "There is no scarcity of anything within this world. The only scarcity
is of Ka consciousness." That is the vision of all pure devotees. Because of
this lack of Ka consciousness in human society, people are suffering
terribly, being merged in an ocean of nescience and sense gratification. A
devotee onlooker is very much aggrieved to see such a situation in the
world.
Cc. di 13.67
6. A devotee is not satisfied with his own salvation; out of
compassion, he preaches to others, and Ka gives him
special protection:
A Ka conscious person should free himself from the clutches of my,
and he should also be compassionate to all others suffering in those
clutches. The activities of the Ka consciousness movement are meant
not only for oneself but for others also. This is the perfection of Ka
consciousness. One who is interested in his own salvation is not as
advanced in Ka consciousness as one who feels compassion for others
and who therefore propagates the Ka consciousness movement. Such an
advanced devotee will never fall down, for Ka will give him special
protection. That is the sum and substance of the Ka consciousness
movement.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.2.36-37
98
7. A devotee feels compassion for the fallen souls:
Devahti continued: My dear Lord, please also describe in detail, both for
myself and for people in general, the continual process of birth and death, for
by hearing of such calamities we may become detached from the activities of
this material world.... My dear Lord, You are just like the sun, for You
illuminate the darkness of the conditional life of the living entities. Because
their eyes of knowledge are not open, they are sleeping eternally in that
darkness without Your shelter, and therefore they are falsely engaged by the
actions and reactions of their material activities, and they appear to be very
fatigued.
Lord Kapila was very satisfied by the request of His glorious mother
because she was thinking not only in terms of her personal salvation but in
terms of all the fallen conditioned souls.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.29.3-6
8. Feeling compassion for conditioned souls, the devotee
preaches:
A pure devotee of the Lord like Brahm and persons in his disciplic
succession are always unhappy to see the perplexities of the conditioned
souls, who are suffering the onslaughts of the threefold miseries which
pertain to the body and mind, to the disturbances of material nature and
many other such material disadvantages. Not knowing adequate measures
for relieving such difficulties, suffering persons sometimes pose themselves
as leaders of the people, and the unfortunate followers are put into further
disadvantages under such so-called leadership. This is like a blind man's
leading another blind man to fall into a ditch. Therefore, unless the
devotees of the Lord take pity on them and teach them the right path, their
lives are hopeless failures.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.8
99
9. Out of compassion, saintly people preach Ka
consciousness:
Saintly people preach God consciousness or Ka consciousness because
they are anxious to save the general populace from the dangers of
animalistic life.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.14.9
10. The Lord is satisfied with a preacher who is tolerant
and merciful:
The Lord is very satished with His devotee when the devotee greets other
people with tolerance, mercy, friendship and equality.
It is the duty of an advanced devotee in the second stage of devotional
perfection to act in accordance with this verse.... Sometimes devotees are
ill-treated by envious persons. It is advised that an advanced devotee should
be tolerant; he should show complete mercy to persons who are ignorant or
innocent. A preacher-devotee is meant to show mercy to innocent persons
whom he can elevate to devotional service. Everyone, by constitutional
position, is an eternal servant of God. Therefore, a devotee's business is to
awaken everyone's Ka consciousness. That is his mercy.... His general
view should be to see every living entity as part of the Supreme Lord.
Different living entities appear in different forms of dress, but according to
the instruction of the Bhagavad-gt, a learned person sees all living entities
equally. Such treatment by the devotee is very much appreciated by the
Supreme Lord.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.11.13
11. Devotees, out of compassion, are kind to the ignorant
100
mass of people and therefore preach (and are blessed by the
demigods):
Pure devotees, out of compassion for the fallen souls, are kplu, very
kind to people in general; they distribute this Bhgavata knowledge all over
the world. A kindhearted devotee is called dna-ntha, protector of the
poor, ignorant mass of people. Lord Ka is also known as dna-ntha or
dna-bandhu, the master or actual friend of the poor living entities, and His
pure devotee also takes the same position of dna-ntha. The dna-nthas, or
devotees of Lord Ka, who preach the path of devotional service, become
favorites of the demigods.... the demigods are automatically pleased with
him and offer all the blessings within their capacity.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.12.51
12. Out of compassion for materialists, devotees preach
Ka consciousness:
The duty of those who follow in the footsteps of Prahlada Maharaja is to
teach the entire world how to be Ka conscious and thus be really
happy.... Materialistic persons are engaged in striving for temporary
benefits, whereas persons advanced in spiritual knowledge, such as Prahlda
Mahrja, are not interested in the materialistic way of life. Instead, they
want to be elevated to an eternal life of knowledge and bliss. Therefore, as
Ka is always compassionate to the fallen souls, His servants, the devotees
of Lord Ka, are also interested in educating the entire populace in Ka
consciousness. The mistake of materialistic life is understood by devotees,
and therefore they smile upon it, considering it insignificant. Out of
compassion, however, such devotees preach the gospel of Bhagavad-gt all
over the world.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.5.55
101
13. Prahlda's prayer for delivering all conditioned souls:
"O best of the great personalities, I am not at all afraid of material
existence, for wherever I stay I am fully absorbed in thoughts of Your glories
and activities. My concern is only for the fools and rascals who are making
elaborate plans for material happiness and maintaining their families,
societies and countries. I am simply concerned with love for them. My dear
Lord Nsihadeva, I see that there are many saintly persons indeed, but
they are interested only in their own deliverance. Not caring for the big
cities and towns, they go to the Himalayas or the forest to meditate with
vows of silence.... They are not interested in delivering others. As for me,
however, I do not wish to be liberated alone, leaving aside all these poor fools
and rascals. I know that without Ka consciousness, without taking shelter
of Your lotus feet, one cannot be happy. Therefore I wish to bring them back
to shelter at Your lotus feet."
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.9.43-44
14. Out of compassion great devotees travel and preach:
Great unalloyed devotees of the Lord are compassionate towards the
fallen, and therefore they travel all over the world with the mission of
bringing souls back to Godhead, back to home. Such pure devotees of the
Lord carry the message of Godhead in order to deliver the fallen souls, and
therefore the common man who is bewildered by the influence of the
external energy of the Lord should avail himself of their association.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.5.3
15. Preaching is based on compassion:
O my Lord, persons who are bereft of the all-auspicious performance of
chanting and hearing about Your transcendental activities are certainly
102
unfortunate and are also bereft of good sense. They engage in inauspicious
activities, enjoying sense gratification for a very little while.
The Lord's pure devotees ... take compassion upon such unfortunate
persons and, in a missionary spirit, try to persuade them into the line of
devotional service. Only by the grace of pure devotees can such unfortunate
men be elevated to the position of transcendental service.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.7
16. Vsudeva Datta's prayer to save all living entities
(exemplifying Vaiava compassion):
Vsudeva Datta told Caitanya Mahprabhu, "My dear Lord, You
incarnate just to deliver all conditioned souls. I have now one petition, which
I wish You would accept.... My Lord, my heart breaks to see the sufferings of
all conditioned souls; therefore I request You to transfer the karma of their
sinful lives upon my head. My dear Lord, let me suffer perpetually in a
hellish condition, accepting all the sinful reactions of all living entities.
Please finish their diseased material life."
When r Caitanya Mahprabhu heard Vsudeva Datta's statement, His
heart became very soft. Tears flowed from His eyes, and He began to
tremble....
A Vaiava is so liberal that he is prepared to risk everything to rescue
conditioned souls from material existence.... He [Vsudeva Datta] was a
most exalted personality who wanted to show mercy upon conditioned
souls.... He was a Vaiavapara-dukha-dukhvery much aggrieved to
see others suffer.... One who executes r Caitanya Mahprabhu's mission
must be considered to be eternally liberated. He is a transcendental person
and does not belong to this material world. Such a devotee engaging in the
deliverance of the total population is as magnanimous as r Caitanya
Mahprabhu Himself ... Such a personality factually represents r Caitanya
Mahprabhu because his heart is always filled with compassion for
103
conditioned souls.
Cc. Madhya 15.160, 162-164
17. Impelled by compassion, the devotee preaches:
When a Vaiava sees mismanagement in the government, he feels great
compassion in his heart and tries his best to purify the situation by
spreading the Hare Ka movement.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.2.3
18. Out of compassion, the devotee preaches:
Vaiavas, or devotees, are usually very compassionate upon conditioned
souls. Without even being invited, a devotee will go from door to door to
enlighten people and to bring them out of the darkness of nescience by
injecting knowledge of the living entity's constitutional position as a
servant of Lord Ka. Such devotees are empowered by the Lord to
distribute devotional consciousness, or Ka consciousness, to the people
in general.
TLC Ch. 1
19. By the compassion and mercy of a devotee, the Lord
delivers a conditioned soul:
Bhacrya's brother-in-law, Gopntha crya, and the devotees of the
Lord were surprised to see the Bhacrya transformed into a great
devotee.
Gopntha crya then began to thank the Lord: "It is by Your grace
only that Bhacrya has been transformed from his stonelike position into
such a devotee." Lord Caitanya then replied to Gopntha crya that it
104
was due to a devotee's favor that a stonelike man could be transformed into
a mild, flowerlike devotee. Actually Gopntha crya had sincerely wished
that his brother-in-law, Bhacrya, would become a devotee of the Lord.
He had sincerely desired that the Lord favor Bhaacrya, and he was glad
to see that his desire was fulfilled by Lord Caitanya. In other words, a
devotee of the Lord is more merciful than the Lord Himself. When a
devotee desires to show his mercy to a person, the Lord acts, and by His
grace one becomes a devotee.
TLC Ch. 26
20. Advanced devotees are compassionate and try to
preach:
When a person is advanced in spiritual consciousness or Ksa
consciousness, he naturally becomes very sympathetic toward all living
entities suffering in the material world. Naturally such an advanced person
thinks of the suffering of the people in general.... If one is actually
sympathetic to fallen, suffering humanity, he should try to elevate people
from material consciousness to spiritual conscious.... By the grace of Ka,
we may raise a person to spiritual consciousness if we ourselves follow the
rules and regulations. If we give up our own spiritual activities and simply
become concerned with the bodily comforts of others, we will fall into a
dangerous position.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.8.9
21. The preacher is the most compassionate personality
towards all the fallen souls:
His [a sdhu's] concern, therefore, is to enlighten people in devotional
service to the Lord. That is his mercy. He knows that without devotional
service to the Lord, human life is spoiled.... He is not satisfied with his own
105
liberation. He always thinks about others. He is the most compassionate
personality towards all the fallen souls. One of his qualifications, therefore,
is kruika, great mercy to the fallen souls.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.25.21
Chapter VIII
The Preacher Should Practice Tolerance
1. Devotees must humbly tolerate opponents while
preaching:
Vaiavas must meet many opponents while preaching the glories of the
Lord, but r Caitanya Mahprabhu recommends that they not become
angry while preaching. Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu has given this formula:
... "One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind,
thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more
tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and should be ready
to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy
name of the Lord constantly." Those engaged in preaching the glories of the
Lord should be humbler than grass and more tolerant than a tree; then they
can preach the glories of the Lord without difficulty.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.4.5
2. The preacher must practice tolerance (in meeting
opposing elements):
106
While engaged in preaching work he [the sdhu] has to meet with so
many opposing elements, and therefore the sdhu, or devotee of the Lord,
has to be very tolerant. Someone may ill-treat him because the conditioned
souls are not prepared to receive the transcendental knowledge of
devotional service. They don't like it; that is their disease. The sdhu has
the thankless task of impressing upon them the importance of devotional
service. Sometimes devotees are personally attacked with violence. Lord
Jesus Christ was crucified, Haridsa hkura was caned in twenty-two
marketplaces, and Lord Caitanya's principal assistant, Nitynanda, was
violently attacked by Jagi and Mdhi. But still they were tolerant because
their mission was to deliver the fallen souls. One of the qualifications of a
sdhu is that he is very tolerant and is merciful to all fallen souls.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.25.21
3. The preacher should tolerate envious persons and go on
preaching:
When one is engaged in devotional service, he is often surrounded by
envious people, and often many enemies come to try to defeat him or stop
him.... The atheists are always prepared to harass a devotee; therefore
Caitanya Mahprabhu suggested that one be very tolerant of these people.
Nonetheless, one has to continue chanting the Hare Ka mantra and
preaching the chanting of this mantra because such preaching and chanting
constitute the perfection of life. One should chant and preach about the
urgency of making this life perfect in all respects.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.24.67
4. The preacher should be humble and tolerate
impediments:
107
Following the orders of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, one who preaches the
glories of the Lord all over the world or all over the universe should be
humbler than grass and more tolerant than a tree because a preacher
cannot live an easygoing life. Indeed, a preacher must face many
impediments. Not only is he sometimes cursed, but sometimes he must also
suffer personal injury. For example, when Nitynanda Prabhu went to
preach Ka consciousness to the two roguish brothers Jagi and Mdhi,
they injured Him and made His head bleed, but nevertheless, He tolerantly
delivered the two rogues, who became perfect Vaiavas. This is the duty of
a preacher. Lord Jesus Christ even tolerated crucifixion.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.5.44
5. The preacher must tolerate inimical persons:
[After discussing "enemies" of the Ka consciousness movementcaste
brhmaas and parents of devotees:]
We have no business creating enemies, but the process is such that
nondevotees will always be inimical toward us. Nevertheless, as stated in
the stras, a devotee should be both tolerant and merciful. Devotees
engaged in preaching should be prepared to be accused by ignorant persons,
and yet they must be very merciful to the fallen conditioned souls. If one
can execute his duty in the disciplic succession of Nrada Muni, his service
will surely be recognized. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gt (18.68-69):
ya ida parama guhya
mad-bhaktev abhidhsyati
bhakti mayi par ktv
mm evaiyaty asaaya
na ca tasmn manuyeu
kacin me priya-kttama
bhavit na ca me tasmd
108
anya priyataro bhuvi
"For one who explains the supreme secret to the devotees, devotional
service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no
servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one
more dear."
Let us continue preaching the message of Lord Ka and not be afraid
of enemies. Our only duty is to satisfy the Lord by this preaching, which will
be accepted as service by Lord Caitanya and Lord Ka. We must sincerely
serve the Lord and not be deterred by so-called enemies.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.5.39
6. The devotee (preacher) accepts reverses as Ka's
mercy:
When something is arranged by the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
one should not be disturbed by it, even if it appears to be a reverse
according to his calculation. For example, sometimes we see that a powerful
preacher is killed, or sometimes he is put into difficulty, just as Haridsa
hkura was. He was a great devotee who came into this material world to
execute the will of the Lord by preaching the Lord's glories. But Haridsa
was punished at the hands of the Kazi by being beaten in twenty-two
marketplaces. Similarly, Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, and Prahlda
Mahrja was put through so many tribulations. The Pavas, who were
direct friends of Ka, lost their kingdom; their wife was insulted, and they
had to undergo many severe tribulations. Seeing all these reverses affect
devotees, one should not be disturbed; one should simply understand that in
these matters there must be some plan of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead. The Bhgavatam's conclusion is that a devotee is never disturbed
by such reverses. He accepts even reverse conditions as the grace of the
Lord. One who continues to serve the Lord even in reverse conditions is
assured that he will go back to Godhead, back to the Vaikuha planets.
109
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.16.37
7. A preacher must tolerate the asuras and make them
become devotees:
It is the nature of demons to give devotees trouble, just as in the West,
Lord Jesus Christ was crucified because he was preaching God
consciousness.... Actually everyone in the material world is more or less an
asura, an atheist. If one preaches, one has to learn to tolerate the asuras and
speak in such a way that they can also become devotees.
TLK Ch. 15, text 35
Chapter IX
To Be Effective in Preaching, the Preacher Must Be Pure
and Follow the Regulative Principles
1. Success formula for book distributors: Follow the rules
and regulations and chant sixteen rounds; follow in the
footsteps of Lord Caitanya:
Upon seeing the chanting and dancing of Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu,
Lord Nitynanda predicted that later there would be dancing and chanting in
every village.
This prediction of r Nitynanda Prabhu is applicable not only in India
but also all over the world. That is now happening by His grace. The
members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness are now
110
traveling from one village to another in the Western countries and are even
carrying the Deity with them. These devotees distribute various literatures
all over the world. We hope that these devotees who are preaching the
message of r Caitanya Mahprabhu will very seriously follow strictly in
His footsteps. If they follow the rules and regulations and chant sixteen
rounds daily, their endeavor to preach the cult of r Caitanya Mahprabhu
will certainly be successful.
Cc. Madhya 7.82
2. For a preacher to have potency, he must be pure:
Our Ka consciousness movement is meant for this purpose. We want
to create pure devotees so that other people will benefit by their association.
In this way the number of pure devotees increases. Professional preachers
cannot create pure devotees.... Only a pure devotee can convert others to
pure devotional service. It is therefore important for all the preachers in our
Ka consciousness movement to first become pure devotees and follow
the regulative principles, refraining from illicit sex, meat-eating, gambling
and intoxication. They should regularly chant the Hare Ka mah-mantra
on their beads, follow the devotional process, rise early in the morning,
attend magala-rati and recite rmad-Bhgavatam and Bhagavad-gt
regularly. In this way, one can become purified and free from all material
contamination.... To make a show of devotional service will not help one.
One must be a pure devotee following the devotional process; then one can
convert others to devotional service.... If a preacher behaves properly in
devotional service, he will be able to convert others. Otherwise, his
preaching will have no effect.
Cc. Madhya 24.98
3. Spiritual strength to preach the Ka consciousness
movement is derived from following the orders of r
111
Caitanya Mahprabhu:
That order [of r Caitanya Mahprabhu] is still existing, and anywhere
and everywhere, in all parts of the world, one can execute it. That order is
to become a spiritual master under the direction of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu by following the regulative principles, chanting daily at least
sixteen rounds of the Hare Ka mah-mantra, and preaching the cult of
Ka consciousness all over the world. If we adhere to the order of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu, we shall get spiritual strength without a doubt, and
we shall be free to preach this cult of the Hare Ka movement and not be
hampered by anyone.
Cc. di 17.126
4. For a preacher to have potency he must be a pure
Vaiava:
Our preachers who are preaching Ka consciousness all over the world
should follow in the footsteps of Nrada Muni and become purified by
following the four principles and chanting the Hare Ka mah-mantra.
This will make them fit to become Vaiavas. Then when they speak to
sinful people about the teachings of this Ka consciousness movement,
people will be affected and take the instructions.... we should follow in the
footsteps of Nrada Muni and become pure Vaiavas. A pure Vaiava is
one who has no ulterior motive. He has totally dedicated himself to the
service of the Lord. He does not have material desires...
Cc. Madhya 24.252
5. ISKCON preaching success formula: Stick to the
regulative principles and preach sincerely according to the
instructions of the cryas:
112
r Caitanya Mahprabhu wanted to preach the sakrtana movement of
love of Ka throughout the entire world, and therefore during His
presence He inspired the sakrtana movement. Specifically, He sent Rpa
Gosvm to Vndvana and Nitynanda to Bengal and personally went to
South India. In this way He kindly left the task of preaching His cult in the
rest of the world to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
The members of this Society must always remember that if they stick to the
regulative principles and preach sincerely according to the instructions of
the cryas, surely they will have the profound blessings of Lord Caitanya
Mahprabhu, and their preaching work will be successful everywhere
throughout the world.
Cc. di 7.171
6. The devotee is fully protected by following Lord
Caitanya's orders:
If one simply follows the instructions of r Caitanya Mahprabhu,
under the guidance of His representative, and chants the Hare Ka
mantra, teaching everyone as far as possible the same principle, the
contamination of the materialistic way of life will not even touch him. It
does not matter whether one lives in a holy place like Vndvana,
Navadvpa or Jaganntha Pur or in the midst of European cities where the
materialistic way of life is very prominent. If a devotee follows the
instructions of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, he lives in the company of the
Lord. Wherever he lives, he converts that place into Vndvana and
Navadvpa. This means that materialism cannot touch him. This is the
secret of success for one advancing in Ka consciousness.
Cc. Madhya 7.129
7. Preaching ability is based on detachment and wisdom:
113
To disseminate transcendental knowledge one must retire from
mundane activities on the strength of enlightenment in knowledge in terms
of Vedic wisdom.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.7.3
8. To push on the Ka consciousness movement, the
regulative principles must be followed:
Unless one is firmly fixed in the regulative principles, one may perform
mischievous acts, even if one is a member of the Ka consciousness
movement. We therefore advise our disciples to strictly follow the
regulative principles; otherwise the most important movement for the
upliftment of humanity will be hampered due to dissension among its
members. Those who are serious about pushing forward this Ka
consciousness movement should remember this and strictly follow the
regulative principles so that their minds will not be disturbed.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.14.35
9. If we follow the rules and regulations (of devotional
service) we can elevate others:
When a person is advanced in spiritual consciousness or Ka
consciousness, he naturally becomes very sympathetic toward all living
entities suffering in the material world. Naturally such an advanced person
thinks of the suffering of the people in general.... If one is actually
sympathetic to fallen, suffering humanity, he should try to elevate people
from material consciousness to spiritual consciousness.... By the grace of
Ka, we may raise a person to spiritual consciousness if we ourselves
follow the rules and regulations. If we give up our own spiritual activities
and simply become concerned with the bodily comforts of others, we will
114
fall into a dangerous position.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.8.9
10. Qualifications for effective preaching:
If a devotee is qualified, sincere and serious about Ka consciousness
and if he follows the instructions of a bona fide spiritual master, as Prahlda
Mahrja did when preaching the instructions he had received from Nrada
Muni, his preaching is effective.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.8.1
11. One who chants sixteen rounds and preaches is "fit to
become a spiritual master for the entire world":
[Santana Gosvm to Haridsa hkura] "Some behave very well but do
not preach the cult of Ka consciousness, whereas others preach but do not
behave properly. You simultaneously perform both duties in relation to the
holy name by your personal behavior and by your preaching. Therefore you
are the spiritual master of the entire world, for you are the most advanced
devotee in the world."
Santana Gosvm clearly defines herein the bona fide spiritual master
of the world. The qualifications expressed in this connection are that one
must act according to the scriptural injunctions and at the same time
preach. One who does so is a bona fide spiritual master.... The members of
the Ka consciousness movement chant a minimum of sixteen rounds a
day, which can be done without difficulty, and at the same time they must
preach the cult of Caitanya Mahprabhu according to the gospel of
Bhagavad-gt As It Is. One who does so is quite fit to become a spiritual
master for the entire world.
Cc. Antya 4.102-103

Chapter X
Conditioned Souls Benefit From Hearing Vedic
LiteratureKa-katha(2)
1. Out of compassion, Ka compiled the Vedic literature
for the liberation of the conditioned souls:
[Lord Caitanya said,] "The conditioned soul cannot revive his Ka
consciousness by his own effort. But out of causeless mercy, Lord Ka
compiled the Vedic literature and its supplements, the Puras. The
forgetful conditioned soul is educated by Ka through the Vedic
literatures, the realized spiritual master and the Supersoul.... In this way one
can acquire real knowledge of his conditioned life and can come to
understand how to attain liberation."
Out of His causeless mercy and compassion, Ka has compiled various
Vedic literatures in His incarnation as Vysadeva. Vysadeva is a
aktyvea-avatra of Lord Ka. He has very kindly presented these
literatures to awaken the conditioned soul to his senses. Unfortunately, at
the present moment the conditioned souls are guided by demons who do not
care to read the Vedic literatures. Although there is an immense
treasure-house of knowledge, people are engaged in reading useless
literature that will give them no information on how to get out of the
clutches of my....
As the aktyvea-avatra Vysadeva, Ka teaches the conditioned soul
through Vedic literatures. Ka externally appears as the spiritual master
and trains the conditioned soul to come to Ka consciousness. When his
original Ka consciousness is revived, the conditioned soul is delivered
116
from the material clutches. Thus a conditioned soul is always helped by the
Supreme Personality of Godhead in three waysby the scriptures, the
spiritual master and the Supersoul within the heart.
Cc. Madhya 20.122-123
2. By hearing the transcendental pastimes of Ka, one
goes back home, back to Godhead:
Following in the holy footsteps of rla ukadeva Gosvm, we have tried
to present this book Ka for being read and heard by the conditioned
souls of this age. By hearing the pastimes of Lord Ka, one is sure and
certain to get salvation and be transferred back home, back to Godhead. It
is recommended by ukadeva Gosvm that as we hear the transcendental
pastimes and activities of the Lord, we gradually cut the knots of material
contamination. Therefore, regardless of what one is, if one wants the
association of Lord Ka in the transcendental kingdom of God for
eternity in blissful existence, one must hear about the pastimes of Lord
Ka and chant the mah-mantra, Hare Ka, Hare Ka, Ka Ka,
Hare Hare/ Hare Rma, Hare Rma, Rma Rma, Hare Hare.
Ka, Ch. 21
3. Hearing (and chanting) the Vedic literature will bring
peace and prosperity to the world:
O King, it is therefore essential that every human being hear, glorify and
remember the Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead always and everywhere.
And for hearing only, all the Vedic literatures are there, compiled by
authorized persons like Vysadeva, who is the powerful incarnation of
Godhead. And as it is ascertained that the Lord is the Supersoul of
everything, He should therefore be heard and glorified everywhere and
always. That is the special duty of the human being. And the human being,
117
when he gives up the process of hearing about the all-pervading Personality
of Godhead, becomes victim to hearing rubbish.... It is said here that it is
incumbent upon the human beings to hear because the scriptures like
Bhagavad-gt, rmad-Bhgavatam, etc., are made for that purpose. Living
beings other than human beings have no capacity to hear such Vedic
literatures. If the human society gives itself to the process of hearing the
Vedic literature, it will not become victim to the impious sounds vibrated by
impious men who degrade the standards of the total society. Hearing is
solidified by the process of chanting. One who has perfectly heard from the
perfect source becomes convinced about the all-pervading Personality of
Godhead and thus becomes enthusiastic in the matter of glorifying the
Lord. All the great cryas, like Rmnuja, Madhva, Caitanya, Sarasvat
hkura or even, in other countries, Muhammad, Christ and others, have
all extensively glorified the Lord by chanting always and in every place.
Because the Lord is all-pervading, it is essential to glorify Him always and
everywhere. In the process of glorifying the Lord there should be no
restriction of time and space. This is called santana-dharma, or
bhgavata-dharma. Santana means eternal, always and everywhere.
Bhgavata means pertaining to Bhagavn, the Lord. The Lord is the master
of all time and all space, and therefore the Lord's holy name must be heard,
glorified and remembered everywhere in the world, and that will bring
about the desired peace and prosperity so eagerly awaited by the people of
the world.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.2.36
4. The purifying effect of ka-kath:
r ukadeva Gosvm said: My dear King, your question is glorious
because it is very beneficial to all kinds of people. To hear the answer to this
question is the prime subject matter of hearing, and it is approved by all
transcendentalists.
The topics of Lord Ka are so auspicious that they purify the speaker,
the hearer, and the inquirer. They are compared to the Ganges waters,
118
which flow from the toe of Lord Ka. Wherever the Ganges waters go,
they purify the land and the person who bathes in them. Similarly,
ka-kath, or the topics of Ka, are so pure that wherever they are
spoken, the place, the hearer, the inquirer, the speaker and all concerned
become purified.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.1.1
5. The Ka consciousness movement gives people a
chance to hear about Ka:
By regular attendance in classes on the Bhgavatam and by rendering of
service to the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost
completely destroyed, and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead,
who is praised with transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable
fact.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.2.18
All the great cryas strongly recommend that people be given a chance
to hear about the Supreme Lord. Then success is assured. The more we
cleanse the dirt of material attachment from our hearts, the more we will be
attracted by Ka's name, form, qualities, paraphernalia and activities. This
is the sum and substance of the Ka consciousness movement.
rmad-Bhgavatam 5.18.11
6. Readers of Ka literature can attain the ultimate goal
of human life:
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Ka, is always full of six
opulencesnamely complete wealth, complete strength, complete fame,
complete knowledge, complete beauty and complete renunciation. The Lord
appears in different complete, eternal forms of incarnation. The
conditioned soul has immense opportunity to hear about the transcendental
119
activities of the Lord in these different incarnations. In the Bhagavad-gt it
is said, janma karma ca me divyam [Bg. 4.9]. The pastimes and activities of
the Lord are not material; they are beyond the material conception. But the
conditioned soul can benefit by hearing such uncommon activities. Hearing
is an opportunity to associate with the Lord; to hear His activities is to
evolve to the transcendental naturesimply by hearing. The conditioned
soul has a natural aptitude to hear something about other conditioned souls
in the form of fiction, drama and novel. That inclination to hear something
about others may be utilized in hearing the pastimes of the Lord. Then one
can immediately evolve to his transcendental nature. Ka's pastimes are
not only beautiful; they are also very pleasing to the mind.
If someone takes advantage of hearing the pastimes of the Lord, the
material contamination of dust, accumulated in the heart due to long
association with material nature, can be immediately cleansed....
Conditional life is due to this contamination only, and as soon as it is
cleared off, then naturally the dormant function of the living
entityrendering service to the Lordawakens. By developing his eternal
relationship with the Supreme Lord, one becomes eligible to create
friendship with the devotees. Mahrja Parkit recommended, from
practical experience, that everyone try to hear about the transcendental
pastimes of the Lord. This Ka treatise is meant for that purpose, and the
reader may take advantage in order to attain the ultimate goal of human
life.
Ka, Ch. 7
7. By hearing rmad-Bhgavatam all miseries are
uprooted, and the Supreme Lord is established within one's
heart:
Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially
motivated, this Bhgavata Pura propounds the highest truth, which is
understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest
120
truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth
uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhgavatam, compiled by the
great sage Vysadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God
realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one
attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhgavatam, by this
culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.1.2
Chapter XI
The Future of the Ka Consciousness Movement
1. The Ka consciousness movement can save the world:
Kirta, Ha, ndhra, Pulinda, Pulkaa, bhra, umbha, Yavana and
the Khasa races and even others who are addicted to sinful acts can be
purified by taking shelter of the devotees of the Lord due to His being the
supreme power. I beg to offer my respectful obeisances unto Him.
The above-mentioned historical names are different nations of the
world. Even those who are constantly engaged in sinful acts are all
corrigible to the standard of perfect human beings if they take shelter of the
devotees of the Lord. Jesus Christ and Hajrat Muhammad, two powerful
devotees of the Lord, have done tremendous service on behalf of the Lord
on the surface of the globe. And from the version of rla ukadeva
Gosvm it appears that instead of running a godless civilization in the
present context of the world situation, if the leadership of world affairs is
entrusted to the devotees of the Lord, for which a worldwide organization
under the name and style of the International Society for Krishna
Consciousness has already been started, then by the grace of the Almighty
121
Lord there can be a thorough change of heart in human beings all over the
world because the devotees of the Lord are able authorities to effect such a
change by purifying the dust-worn minds of the people in general. The
politicians of the world may remain in their respective positions because the
pure devotees of the Lord are not interested in.political leadership or
diplomatic implications. The devotees are interested only in seeing that the
people in general are not misguided by political propaganda and in seeing
that the valuable life of a human being is not spoiled in following a type of
civilization which is ultimately doomed. If the politicians would, therefore,
be guided by the good counsel of the devotees, then certainly there would
be a great change in the world situation by the purifying propaganda of the
devotees, as shown by Lord Caitanya....
... A person, though he be even the most sinful man, can at once be
purified by systematic contact with a pure Vaiava.... So by the order of
Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu, the cult of rmad-Bhgavatam or the
Bhagavad-gt can be preached all over the world, reclaiming all persons
willing to accept the transcendental cult. Such cultural propaganda by the
devotees will certainly be accepted by all persons who are reasonable and
inquisitive, without any particular bias for the custom of the country.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.4.18
2. The Ka consciousness movement should be spread all
over the world:
The flood of love of Godhead swelled in all directions, and thus young
men, old men, women and children were all immersed in that inundation.
When the contents of the storehouse of love of Godhead is thus
distributed, there is a powerful inundation which covers the entire land. In
rdhma Mypur there is sometimes a great flood after the rainy season.
This is an indication that from the birthplace of Lord Caitanya the
inundation of love of Godhead should be spread all over the world, for this
will help everyone, including old men, young men, women and children.
122
The Ka consciousness movement of r Caitanya Mahprabhu is so
powerful that it can inundate the entire world and interest all classes of
men in the subject of love of Godhead.
Cc. di 7.25
3. Ka consciousness will spread all over the world:
The Ka consciousness movement will inundate the entire world and
drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue or even lame, invalid
or blind. When the five members of the Paca-tattva saw the entire world
drowned in love of Godhead and the seed of material enjoyment in the living
entities completely destroyed, they all became exceedingly happy. The more
the five members of the Paca-tattva cause the rains of love of Godhead to
fall, the more the inundation increases and spreads all over the world.
The Ka consciousness movement is not stereotyped or stagnant....
Here it is indicated that this process will spread and inundate the entire
world with Ka consciousness.
Cc. di 7.26-28
4. The Ka consciousness movement will save the
Western countries:
They [Lord Caitanya and Lord Nitynanda] appeared on the horizon of
Gaua-dea to spread the science of Ka consciousness, and it is predicted
that as the sun and moon gradually move west, the movement They began
five hundred years ago will come to the Western civilizations by Their
mercy.
Cc. di 1.102
5. Lord Caitanya's prediction that Ka consciousness will
123
spread all over the world is being realized:
When people came to r Caitanya Mahprabhu to discuss the principles
of various scriptures, the Lord defeated their false conclusions and
established the predominance of devotional service to the Lord. With logic
and argument He very politely changed their minds.
We have been spreading this sakrtana movement in the Western
countries, and in our recent tour of European cities like Rome, Geneva,
Paris and Frankfurt, many learned Christian scholars, priests, philosophers
and yogs came to see us, and by the grace of Ka they agreed that this
Ka consciousness movement, the bhakti cult, offers the topmost
conclusion. Following in the footsteps of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, we are
trying to convince everyone that the devotional service of the Lord is
enjoined in every scripture.... It is not a question of being Christian,
Mohammedan or Hindu. One should be purely religious and freed from all
these material designations.... This argument appeals to all intelligent men,
and consequently this Ka consciousness movement is gaining ground
throughout the world. Due to our solid logic and scientific presentation, r
Caitanya Mahprabhu's prediction that Ka consciousness will spread in
every town and village throughout the world is gradually being realized.
Cc. Madhya 25.20
6. The Ka consciousness movement will gradually spread
all over the universe:
The sakrtana movement went on from one part of the town to another,
as the Lord wandered everywhere performing krtana. In this way He
inundated the whole world by distributing love of Godhead.
One may raise the question how all three worlds became inundated with
love of Ka since Caitanya Mahprabhu performed krtana only in the
Navadvpa area. The answer is that Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu is Ka
Himself. The entire cosmic manifestation results from the Lord's first
124
setting it in motion. Similarly, since the sakrtana movement was first set
in motion five hundred years ago by r Caitanya Mahprabhu's desire that
it spread all over the universe, the Ka consciousness movement, in
continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in
this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of
the Ka consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of
love of Ka.
Cc. di 13.32
7. The Ka consciousness movement is spreading like
wildfire and cannot be checked:
Human life is meant for God realization, but unfortunately the
materialistic civilization is stressing only the senses of the body, not
understanding the living force within the body. As clearly stated in
Bhagavad-gt (dehino 'smin yath dehe [Bg. 2.13]), within the body is the
body's proprietor, the living force, which is more important. But human
society has become so fallen that instead of understanding the living force
within the body, people have become busy with external things. This is a
discrepancy in human duties. Therefore Ka has taken birth or taken
shelter within the womb of the Ka consciousness movement. Men of
Kasa's class, therefore, are very much afraid and are busy trying to stop
this movement, especially in the Western countries. One politician has
remarked that the Ka consciousness movement is spreading like an
epidemic and that if not checked immediately, within ten years it may
capture governmental power. There is, of course, such potency in the Ka
consciousness movement. As stated by authorities (Cc. di 17.22), kali-kle
nma-rpe ka-avatra: in this age, Ka has appeared in the Hare Ka
mah-mantra. The Ka consciousness movement is spreading like wildfire
all over the world, and it will go on doing so. Men who are like Kasa are
very much afraid of the movement's progress and acceptance by the younger
generation, but as Ka could not be killed by Kasa, this movement
cannot be checked by men of Kasa's class. The movement will go on
125
increasing more and more, provided the leaders of the movement remain
firmly Ka conscious by following the regulative principles and the
primary activities of chanting the Hare Ka mantra regularly.
rmad-Bhgavatam 10.2.20
8. If we preach, the Ka consciousness movement will
spread all over the world by the grace of the Lord:
The Ka consciousness movement has spread all over the world within
a very short time (within five years), and mundane people are very
astonished at this. However, by the grace of Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu,
we understand that everything is possible by the grace of Ka. Why does
Ka have to take five years? In five days He can spread His name and
fame all over the world like wildfire. Those who have faith and devotion to
Ka can understand that these things happen so wonderfully by the grace
of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. We are simply the instruments. . .
Cc. Madhya 4.79

Chapter XII
Preaching, Temple Construction and Deity Worship
1. Book distribution is more important than Deity worship:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu set a practical example in that He did not
establish any temples or Deities, but He profusely introduced the sakrtana
movement. Therefore Ka consciousness preachers should give more
stress to the sakrtana movement, especially by distributing transcendental
literature more and more. This helps the sakrtana movement. Whenever
there is a possibility to worship the Deity, we may establish many centers,
but generally we should give more stress to the distribution of
transcendental literature, for this will be more effective in converting
people to Ka consciousness.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.14.39
2. Preaching is more important than Deity Worship:
Deity worship is especially meant for purifying the neophyte devotees.
Actually, however, preaching is more important. In Bhagavad-gt (18.69) it
is said, na ca tasmn manuyeu kacin me priya-kttama: if one wants to be
recognized by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he must preach the
glories of the Lord. One who worships the Deity must therefore be
extremely respectful to preachers; otherwise simply worshiping the Deity
will keep one in the lower stage of devotion.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.14.40
127
3. Writing, publishing and distributing books is more
important than temple construction; compared to playing on
great mdaga:
... to write books and publish them for the enlightenment of the general
populace is real service to the Lord. That was rla Bhaktisiddhnta
Sarasvat's opinion, and he specifically told his disciples to write books. He
actually preferred to publish books rather than establish temples. Temple
construction is meant for the general populace and neophyte devotees, but
the business of advanced and empowered devotees is to write books, publish
them and distribute them widely. According to Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat
hkura, distributing literature is like playing on a great mdaga.
Consequently we always request members of the International Society for
Krishna Consciousness to publish as many books as possible and distribute
them widely throughout the world. By thus following in the footsteps of
rla Rpa Gosvm, one can become a rpnuga devotee.
Cc. Madhya 19.132
4. Distributing books and constructing temples must
continue on parallel lines:
For preaching, construction of temples is also necessary. The Gosvms
not only engaged in writing books but also constructed temples because
both are needed for preaching work. r Caitanya Mahprabhu wanted the
cult of His sakrtana movement to spread all over the world. Now that the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness has taken up this task of
preaching the cult of Lord Caitanya, its members should not only construct
temples in every town and village of the globe but also distribute books
which have already been written and further increase the number of books.
Both distribution of books and construction of temples must continue side
by side in parallel lines.
128
Cc. di 7.164
5. Book publishing and distribution is more important than
temple construction:
... a sannys should not be enthusiastic about constructing temples. We
can see in the life of various cryas in the line of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu that they are not very enthusiastic about constructing temples.
However, if somebody comes forward to offer some service, the same
reluctant cryas will encourage the building of costly temples by such
servitors....
So a bona fide spiritual master should not personally take any
responsibility for constructing temples, but if someone has money and
wants to spend it in the service of Ka, an crya like Rpa Gosvm may
utilize the devotee's money to construct a nice costly temple for the service
of the Lord.... a spiritual master needn't be very enthusiastic for
constructing temple buildings simply in the name of so-called spiritual
advancement. Rather, his first and foremost activity should be to preach. In
this connection, rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat Gosvm Mahrja
recommended that a spiritual master print books. If one has money, instead
of constructing costly temples, one should spend his money for the
publication of authorized books in different languages for propagating the
Ka consciousness movement.
NOD Ch. 7
Chapter XIII
Preachers Must Know the Philosophy of Ka
129
Consciousness
1. All devotees, especially preachers, must know the
philosophy of Ka consciousness:
The blessed messengers of Lord Viu, the Viudtas, said: If you are
actually servants of Yamarja, you must explain to us the meaning of
religious principles and the symptoms of irreligion.
This inquiry by the Viudtas to the Yamadtas is most important. A
servant must know the instructions of his master. The servants of Yamarja
claimed to be carrying out his orders, and therefore the Viudtas very
intelligently asked them to explain the symptoms of religious and irreligious
principles.... The question posed by the Viudtas was very suitable. One
who represents someone else must fully know that person's mission. The
devotees in the Ka consciousness movement must therefore be fully
aware of the mission of Ka and Lord Caitanya; otherwise they will be
considered foolish. All devotees, especially preachers, must know the
philosophy of Ka consciousness so as not to be embarrassed and insulted
when they preach.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.1.38
2. The basis of Ka conscious preaching and missionary
activity is Bhagavad-gt, rmad-Bhgavatam,
Caitanya-caritmta and Bhakti-rasmta-sindhu:
In our Kna consciousness movement we have ... limited our study of
Vedic literatures to Bhagavad-gt, rmad-Bhgavatam, Caitanya-caritmta
and Bhakti-rasmta-sindhu. These four works are sufficient for preaching
130
purposes. They are adequate for the understanding of the philosophy and
the spreading of missionary activities all over the world.
Cc. Madhya 22.118
3. The preacher should study and preach Bhagavad-gt:
Lord Caitanya has advised all His followers to go everywhere and preach
the message of Lord Ka. Since this message is essentially Bhagavad-gt,
the preacher's duty is to study Bhagavad-gt as it is understood by disciplic
succession and explained by great sages and learned devotees. One should
speak to the general populace in accordance with one's
predecessorssdhu, guru and stras. This simple process is the easiest
method by which one can glorify the Lord.
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.16.3
Chapter XIV
Preaching Method (How to Preach)
1. The preachings of a sdhu:
A devotee travels all over the country, from door to door, preaching, "Be
Ka conscious. Be a devotee of Lord Ka. Don't spoil your life in simply
furfilling your animal propensities. Human life is meant for self-realization
or Ka consciousness." These are the preachings of a sdhu.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.25.21
131
2. What a preacher should preach:
bhoktra yaja-tapas
sarva-loka-mahevaram
suhda sarva-bhtn
jtv m ntim rcchati
(Bg. 5.29)
One is expected to understand these three formulas of knowledge
concerning the Supreme Lordthat He is the supreme enjoyer, that He is
the proprietor of everything, and that He is the best well-wisher and friend
of everyone. A preacher should personally understand these truths and
preach them to everyone. Then there will be peace and tranquility all over
the world.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.6.24
3. One has to preach following the clear advice given by r
Caitanya Mahprabhu:
yre dekha, tre kha 'ka'-upadea
mra jya guru ha tra' ei dea
[Cc. Madhya 7.128]
"Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord r Ka as they are
given in Bhagavad-gt and rmad-Bhgavatam. In this way become a
spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land." r Caitanya
Mahprabhu further advised the brhmaa Krma, "If you follow this
instruction, your materialistic life at home will not obstruct your spiritual
advancement. Indeed, if you follow these regulative principles, we will again
meet here, or, rather, you will never lose My company." At whosoever's
house r Caitanya accepted His alms by taking prasda, He would convert
the dwellers to His sakrtana movement and advise them just as He advised
132
the brhmaa named Krma.
This is the sublime mission of the International Society for Krishna
Consciousness. Many people come and inquire whether they have to give
up family life to join the Society, but that is not our mission. One can
remain comfortably in his residence. We simply request everyone to chant
the mah-mantra: Hare Ka, Hare Ka, Ka Ka, Hare Hare/ Hare
Rma, Hare Rma, Rma Rma, Hare Hare. If one is a little literate and can
read Bhagavad-gt As It Is and rmad-Bhgavatam, that is so much the
better. These works are now available in an English translation and are
done very authoritatively to appeal to all classes of men. Instead of living
engrossed in material activities, people throughout the world should take
advantage of this movement and chant the Hare Ka mah-mantra at
home with their families. One should also refrain from sinful
activitiesillicit sex, meat-eating, gambling and intoxication.... The Ka
consciousness movement is trying to elevate human society to the
perfection of life by pursuing the method described by r Caitanya
Mahprabhu in His advice to the brhmaa Krma. That is, one should stay
at home, chant the Hare Ka mah-mantra and preach the instructions of
Ka as they are given in Bhagavad-gt and rmad-Bhgavatam.
Cc. Madhya 7.128-130
4. Preaching by humble persuasion:
... the original purpose of the Myvd sannyss of Benares in meeting
Caitanya Mahprabhu was to defeat His personal conception of God. r
Caitanya Mahprabhu, however, as a preacher, turned the minds of the
Myvd sannyss. They were melted by the sweet words of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu and thus became friendly and spoke to Him also in sweet
words. Similarly, all preachers will have to meet opponents, but they should
not make them more inimical. They are already enemies, and if we talk with
them harshly or impolitely their enmity will merely increase. We should
therefore follow in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu as far as
133
possible and try to convince the opposition by quoting from the stras and
presenting the conclusion of the cryas. It is in this way that we should try
to defeat all the enemies of the Lord.
Cc. di 7.99
5. A preacher's duty is to induce the offenders to chant the
Hare Ka mantra:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu teaches us that those whom preachers meet
are almost all offenders who are opposed to Ka consciousness, but it is a
preacher's duty to convince them of the Ka consciousness movement and
then induce them to chant the Hare Ka mah-mantra. Our propagation
of the sakrtana movement is continuing, despite many opponents, and
people are taking this chanting process even in remote parts of the world
like Africa. By inducing the offenders to chant the Hare Ka mantra,
Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu exemplified the success of the Ka
consciousness movement. We should follow very respectfully in the
footsteps of Lord Caitanya, and there is no doubt that we shall be successful
in our attempts.
Cc. di 7.150
6. Devotees must chant the Paca-tattva mah-mantra
before every preaching function:
We must strictly follow the principle of offering our respects to the
Paca-tattva, as summarized in the mantrar-ksa-caitanya prabhu
nitynanda r-advaita gaddhara rvsdi-gaura-bhakta-vnda. At the
beginning of every function in preaching, especially before chanting the
Hare Ka mah-mantra ... we must chant the Paca-tattva's names and
offer our respects to them.
Cc. di 8.4
134
Chapter XV
How a Preacher Should Deal With Opposing Arguments
1. The main business of a preacher is to introduce
sakrtana:
Although Lord r Caitanya Mahprabhu and His devotees in disciplic
succession can defeat all kinds of learned scholars, scientists and
philosophers in arguments, thus establishing the supremacy of the
Personality of Godhead, their main business as preachers is to introduce
sakrtana everywhere. Simply to defeat scholars and philosophers is not
the occupation of a preacher. Preachers must simultaneously introduce the
sakrtana movement, for that is the mission of the Caitanya cult.
Cc. di 16.8
2. The preacher should avoid "an argumentative attitude":
... one should not concern oneself with the conclusions of various
logicians or philosophers. Of course, those who preach sometimes need to
argue with the contentions of opponents, but as much as possible one
should avoid an argumentative attitude.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.13.7
3. Those who are preachers should be prepared to defeat
135
others' arguments:
The scriptures of the Buddhist cult are chiefly based on argument and
logic, and they contain nine chief principles. Because r Caitanya
Mahprabhu defeated them in their argument, they could not establish their
cult.
Those who are preachers in ISKCON will certainly meet many people
who believe in intellectual arguments. Most of these people do not believe
in the authority of the Vedas. Nevertheless, they accept intellectual
speculation and argument. Therefore the preachers of Ka consciousness
should be prepared to defeat others by argument, just as r Caitanya
Mahprabhu did.
Cc. Madhya 9.49
4. ISKCON preachers should be expert in defeating
atheists:
Atheists may be very expert in mental speculation and may be so-called
great philosophers, but they can be defeated by a Vaiava firmly situated
in his conviction and God consciousness. Following in the footsteps of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu, all the preachers engaged in the service of ISKCON
should be very expert in putting forward strong arguments and defeating all
types of atheists.
Cc. Madhya 9.51
Chapter XVI
Preachers May Wear Ordinary Dress
136
1. For introducing books and philosophy, a preacher may
wear ordinary dress:
For paramahasas, or sannyss in the Vaiava order, preaching is the
first duty. To preach, such sannyss may accept the symbols of sannysa,
such as the daa and kamaalu, or sometimes they may not.... Such a
sannys is free to accept or reject the marks of sannysa. His only thought
is "Where is there an opportunity to spread Ka consciousness?"
Sometimes the Ka consciousness movement sends its representative
sannyss to foreign countries where the daa and kamaalu are not very
much appreciated. We send out preachers in ordinary dress to introduce our
books and philosophy. Our only concern is to attract people to Ka
consciousness. We may do this in the dress of sannyss or in the regular
dress of gentlemen. Our only concern is to spread interest in Ka
consciousness.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.13.9
2. For preaching, devotees may assume Western dress:
Sometimes members of the International Society for Krishna
Consciousnessespecially in the Western countriesfind it difficult to
approach people to distribute books because people are unfamiliar with the
traditional saffron robes of the devotees. The devotees have therefore
inquired whether they can wear European and American dress before the
general public. From the instructions given to King Pratparudra by
Srvabhauma Bhacrya, we can understand that we may change our
dress in any way to facilitate our service. When our members change their
dress to meet the public or to introduce our books, they are not breaking the
devotional principles. The real principle is to spread this Ka
consciousness movement, and if one has to change into regular Western
dress for this purpose, there should be no objection.
137
Cc. Madhya 14.5
Chapter XVII
The Benefits of Giving Contributions to Ka Conscious
Devotees
1. One who gives money to a Ka conscious person is
freed from sinful reactions:
When such possessions [those which are the products of sinful life] are
given to brhmaas and Vaiavas who can engage them in the service of
the Lord because of their advancement in spiritual life, this indirectly helps
the person who gives the charity, for he is thus relieved of sinful reactions.
As Ka promises, aha tv sarva-ppebhyo mokayiymi: [Bg. 18.66] "I
shall save you from all sinful reactions." When our Ka conscious devotees
go out to beg charity or collect contributions in the form of membership
fees, the money thus coming to the Ka consciousness movement is
strictly employed to advance Ka consciousness all over the world. The
Ka conscious devotees collect the money of others for the service of
Ka, and they are satisfied with Ka's prasda and whatever He gives
them for their maintenance. They do not desire material comforts.
However, they go to great pains to engage the possessions of prostitutes, or
persons who are more or less like prostitutes, in the service of the Lord and
thus free them from sinful reactions.
Cc. Antya 3.139
2. Giving contributions to authorized persons gives the
138
donor unlimited benefit:
Money given in charity to a suitable person is guaranteed bank balance
in the next life. Such charity is recommended to be given to a brhmaa. If
the money is given in charity to a non-brhmaa (without brahminical
qualification) the money is returned in the next life in the same proportion.
If it is given in charity to a half-educated brhmaa, even then the money is
returned double. If the money is given in charity to a learned and fully
qualified brhmaa, the money is returned a hundred and a thousand times,
and if the money is given to a veda-praga (one who has factually realized
the path of the Vedas), it is returned by unlimited multiplication.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.3.17
3. Giving a contribution to the Ka consciousness
movement saves one from going to hell:
rla Prabhupda: ...a man will go to hell by taking Ka's money. So some
way or other, take some money from him and engage him in the Ka
consciousness movement.
Bob: And then he may not go to hell?
rla Prabhupda: Yes. You save him from going to hell. Because a farthing
spent for Ka will be accounted: "Oh, this man has given a farthing." This
is called ajta-sukti (spiritual activity one performs unknowingly). They
are very poor in their thought. Therefore the saintly persons move just to
enlighten them a little. To give them a chance. Giving them a chance to
serve Ka. That is the saintly person's duty.
Bob: That is what?
rla Prabhupda: That is his duty. But if he takes money from others and
utilizes it for his sense gratification, then he goes to hell. Then it is finished.
Then he is a cheater; actually he is a criminal. You cannot take money, a
farthing, from anyone, and use it for your own sense gratification.

Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers
Chapter XVIII
Preaching Is More Important Than Chanting In Seclusion
and Visiting Holy Places
1. One should endeavor to preach and not imitate exalted
devotees by chanting in a secluded place:
rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura explains in his Anubhya, "A
person who has attracted the attention of the spiritual master by his sincere
service likes to dance and chant with similarly developed Ka conscious
devotees. The spiritual master authorizes such a devotee to deliver fallen
souls in all parts of the world. Those who are not advanced prefer to chant
the Hare Ka mantra in a solitary place." Such activities constitute, in the
language of rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura, a type of cheating
process in the sense that they imitate the activities of exalted personalities
like Haridsa hkura. One should not attempt to imitate such exalted
devotees. Rather, everyone should endeavor to preach the cult of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu in all parts of the world and thus become successful
in spiritual life. One who is not very expert in preaching may chant in a
secluded place, avoiding bad association, but for one who is actually
advanced, preaching and meeting people who are not engaged in devotional
service are not disadvantages. A devotee gives the nondevotees his
association but is not affected by their misbehavior. Thus by the activities
of a pure devotee even those who are bereft of love of Godhead get a chance
to become devotees of the Lord one day. In this connection rla
Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura advises that one discuss the verse in
140
rmad-Bhgavatam, naitat samcarej jtu manaspi hy anvara (10.33.31)
and the following verse in Bhakti-rasmrta-sindhu:
ansaktasya viayn
yathrham upayujata
nirbandha ka-sambandhe
yukta vairgyam ucyate
(Brs. 1.2.255)
One should not imitate the activities of great personalities. One should be
detached from material enjoyment and should accept everything in
connection with Ka's service.
Cc. di 7.92
2. One should preach and not prematurely retire to a
solitary place:
One should not take to the demoniac activity of claiming to be a
Vaiava just for false prestige, without performing service to the Lord. But
when one engages oneself in the devotional service of the Lord,
automatically the Vaiava reputation comes to him. There is no need to be
envious of devotees engaged in preaching the glories of the Lord. We have
practical experience of being advised by the so-called bbjs in Vndvana
that there is no need to preach and that it is better to live in Vndvana in
a solitary place and chant the holy name. Such bbjs do not know that if
one is engaged in preaching work or in glorifying the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, the good reputation of a preacher automatically follows one.
One should not, therefore, prematurely give up the honest life of a
householder to lead a life of debauchery in Vndvana.
Ka, Vol. 3
141
3. Two kinds of devotees: gohy-nand and tmnand:
... there are two kinds of devotees of the Lord. One is called
gohynand, which means those who are preachers and have many
followers for preaching the glories of the Lord and who live amongst those
many, many followers just to organize missionary activities. Other devotees
are tmnand, or self-satisfied, and do not take the risk of preaching work.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.24.34
4. Preaching is more important than staying in or visiting
Vndvana or Jaganntha Pur for one's own personal
satisfaction:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu then told Nitynanda Prabhu, "Please hear Me,
O holy man: I now request something of You. Kindly grant My request. Do
not come to Jaganntha Pur every year, but stay in Bengal and fulfill My
desire."
The mission of r Caitanya Mahprabhu is to spread the only medicine
effective in this fallen age of Kalithe chanting of the Hare Ka
mah-mantra. Following the orders of His mother, r Caitanya
Mahprabhu was residing at Jaganntha Pur, and the devotees were coming
to see Him. However, the Lord felt that this message must be spread very
elaborately in Bengal, and in His absence there was not a second person
capable of doing it. Consequently the Lord requested Nitynanda Prabhu to
stay there and broadcast the message of Ka consciousness. The Lord also
entrusted a similar preaching responsibility to Rpa and Santana.
Nitynanda Prabhu was requested not to come every year to Jaganntha
Pur, although seeing Lord Jaganntha greatly benefits everyone. Does this
mean that the Lord was refusing Nitynanda Prabhu a fortunate
opportunity? No. One who is a faithful servant of r Caitanya Mahprabhu
must execute His order, even if one has to sacrifice going to Jaganntha Pur
142
to see Lord Jaganntha there. In other words, it is a greater fortune to carry
out r Caitanya Mahprabhu's order than to satisfy one's senses by seeing
Lord Jaganntha.
Preaching Caitanya Mahprabhu's cult throughout the world is more
important than staying in Vndvana or Jaganntha Pur for one's own
personal satisfaction. Spreading Ka consciousness is r Caitanya
Mahprabhu's mission; therefore His sincere devotees must carry out His
desire.
Cc. Madhya 16.63-64
5. A devotee must preach rather than sit in a solitary place:
At the present moment we see that some of the members of the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness are tending to leave their
preaching activities in order to sit in a solitary place. This is not a very good
sign. It is a fact that rla Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat hkura has
condemned this process for neophytes.... Sitting in a solitary place
intending to chant the Hare Ka mah-mantra is considered a cheating
process. This practice is not possible for neophytes at all. The neophyte
devotee must act and work very laboriously under the direction of the
spiritual master and he must thus preach the cult of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu. Only after maturing in devotion can he sit down in a solitary
place to chant the Hare Kna mah-mantra.... The point is that one should
not try to imitate Haridsa hkura at the beginning of one's
transcendental life. One must first become very mature in devotion and
thus receive the approval of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. Only at such a time
may one actually sit down peacefully in a solitary place to chant the Hare
Ka mah-mantra and remember the lotus feet of the Lord. The senses are
very strong, and if a neophyte devotee imitates Haridsa hkura, his
enemies (kma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and mtsarya) will disturb and
fatigue him. Instead of chanting the Hare Ka mah-mantra, the
neophyte will simply sleep soundly. Preaching work is meant for advanced
devotees, and when an advanced devotee is further elevated on the
143
devotional scale, he may retire to chant the Hare Ka mantra in a solitary
place. However, if one simply imitates advanced spiritual life, he will fall
down, just like the sahajiys in Vndvana.
Cc. Madhya 11.176
6. Sdhus who undergo difficulties to preach are superior:
Those who are preachers are superior to those who go to the Himalayas
to meditate. It is good to go to the Himalayas to meditate for one's personal
benefit, but those who undergo many difficulties in order to preach are
superior. They are actually fighting for Ka's sake, and they are certainly
more compassionate. Those sdhus who leave Vndvana to go fight in the
world, to spread Ka consciousness, are superior sdhus. This is the
opinion of Ka in Bhagavad-gt (18.68-69): "For one who explains the
supreme secret to the devotees, devotional service is guaranteed, and at the
end he will come back to Me. There is no servant in this world more dear to
Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear."
If we want to be quickly recognized by Kna, we should become
preachers. This is also the message of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. It is not
that one should remain in India; rather, one should travel all over the world
to preach Ka consciousness.

Chapter XIX
In the Ka Consciousness Movement, Both Men and
Women Preach
144
1. Women as well as men can preach Ksa consciousness:
Seeing that the Myavds and others were fleeing, Lord Caitanya
thought: I wanted everyone to be immersed in this inundation of love of
Godhead, but some of them have escaped. Therefore I shall devise a trick to
drown them also.
Here is an important point. Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu wanted to
invent a way to capture the Myvds and others who did not take interest
in the Ka consciousness movement. This is the symptom of an crya.
An crya who comes for the service of the Lord cannot be expected to
conform to a stereotype, for he must find the ways and means by which
Ka consciousness may be spread. Sometimes jealous persons criticize the
Ka consciousness movement because it engages equally both boys and
girls in distributing love of Godhead.... However, since both the boys and
girls are being trained to become preachers, those girls are not ordinary girls
but are as good as their brothers who are preaching Ka consciousness.
Therefore, to engage both boys and girls in fully transcendental activities is
a policy intended to spread the Ka consciousness movement. These
jealous fools who criticize the intermingling of boys and girls will simply
have to be satisfied with their own foolishness because they cannot think of
how to spread Ka consciousness by adopting ways and means which are
favorable for this purpose. Their stereotyped methods will never help spread
Ka consciousness. Therefore, what we are doing is perfect by the grace of
Lord Caitanya Mahprabhu, for it is He who proposed to invent a way to
capture those who strayed from Ka consciousness.
Cc. di 7.32
2. In the Ka consciousness movement, both men and
women preach; rules governing separation of the sexes:
r Caitanya Mahprabhu appeared to deliver all the fallen souls.
Therefore He devised many methods to liberate them from the clutches of
145
my.
It is the concern of the crya to show mercy to the fallen souls. In this
connection, dea-kla-ptra (the place, the time and the object) should be
taken into consideration. Since the European and American boys and girls
in our Ka consciousness movement preach together, less intelligent men
criticize that they are mingling without restriction.... However, we are
thoroughly instructing both men and women how to preach, and actually
they are preaching wonderfully. Of course, we very strictly prohibit illicit
sex. Boys and girls who are not married are not allowed to sleep together or
live together, and there are separate arrangements for boys and girls in
every temple. Ghasthas live outside the temple, for in the temple we do not
allow even husband and wife to live together. The results of this are
wonderful. Both men and women are preaching the gospel of Lord Caitanya
Mahprabhu and Lord Ka with redoubled strength. In this verse the
words sab nistrite kare ctur apra indicate that r Caitanya
Mahprabhu wanted to deliver one and all. Therefore it is a principle that a
preacher must strictly follow the rules and regulations laid down in the
stras yet at the same time devise a means by which the preaching work to
reclaim the fallen may go on with full force.

Chapter XX
Other Important Instructions Concerning Preaching
1. Regardless of one's material designations, if he
understands the science of Ka, he can spread Ka
consciousness.
146
kib vipra, kib nys, dra kene naya
yei ka-tattva-vett, sei 'guru' haya
[Cc. Madhya 8.128]
"Whether one is a brhmaa, a sannysi or a sdraregardless of what
he ishe can become a spiritual master if he knows the science of Ka."
To spread Ka consciousness, one need only be cognizant of the
science of the spirit soul. It does not matter whether one is a brhmaa,
katriya, vaiya, dra, sannys, ghastha or whatever. If one simply
understands this science, he can become a spiritual master.... There are two
kinds of Vaiavasbhajannand and gothy-nand. A bhajannand is not
interested in preaching work, but a gohy-nand is interested in spreading
Ka consciousness to benefit the people and increase the number of
Vaiavas.... Unless we accept this principle enunciated by r Caitanya
Mahprabhu, this Ka consciousness movement cannot spread all over
the world. According to r Caitanya Mahprabhu's intentions: pthivte
che yata nagardi grma sarvatra pracra haibe mora nma. r Caitanya
Mahprabhu's cult must be preached all over the world. This does not mean
that people should take to His teachings and remain dras or calas. As
soon as one is trained as a pure Vaiava, he must be accepted as a bona fide
brhmaa. This is the essence of r Caitanya Mahprabhu's instructions in
this verse.
Cc. Madhya 8.128
2. Preaching is a dynamic activity:
The expert devotees also can discover novel ways and means to convert
the nondevotees in terms of particular time and circumstance. Devotional
service is dynamic activity, and the expert devotees can find out competent
means to inject it into the dull brains of the materialistic population. Such
transcendental activities of the devotees for the service of the Lord can
bring a new order of life to the foolish society of materialistic men. Lord r
147
Caitanya Mahprabhu and His subsequent followers exhibited expert
dexterity in this connection. By following the same method, one can bring
the materialistic men of this age of quarrel into order for peaceful life and
transcendental realization.
rmad-Bhgavatam 1.5.16
3. Austerity in preaching work leads to perfection:
Severe austerities in the practice of devotional service are of many
varieties.... the hard labor involved in preaching, preparing literature,
preaching to atheistic men and distributing literature door to door is of
course an austerity (tapo-yuktena). Tapo divya putrak
[rmad-Bhgavatam 5.5.1]. Such austerity is necessary. Yena sattva
uddhyet. By such austerity in devotional service, one is purified of material
existence (kmn anair jahau). Indeed, such austerity leads one to the
constitutional position of devotional service. In this way one can give up
material desires, and as soon as one is freed from material desires, he is free
from the repetition of birth and death, old age and disease.
rmad-Bhgavatam 9.4.26
4. The basic principle of missionary activities is that the
devotee wants to broadcast information of the Lord to
others:
The pure devotees are not only satisfied by knowing everything about
the Lord, but they are also eager to broadcast the information to others, for
they want to see that the glories of the Lord are known to everyone. Thus
the devotee feels satisfied when such an opportunity is offered to him. This
is the basic principle of missionary activities.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.5.9
148
5. The first-class devotee is an expert preacher:
Devotees can be divided into three classes. The first or uppermost class is
described as follows: one is very expert in the study of relevant scriptures,
and he is also expert in putting forward arguments in terms of those
scriptures. He can very nicely present conclusions with perfect discretion
and can consider the ways of devotional service in a decisive way. He
understands perfectly that the ultimate goal of life is to attain to the
transcendental loving service of Ka, and he knows that Ka is the only
object of worship and love. This first-class devotee is one who has strictly
followed the rules and regulations under the training of a bona fide spiritual
master and has sincerely obeyed him in accord with revealed scriptures.
Thus being fully trained to preach and become a spiritual master himself, he
is considered first-class. A first-class devotee never deviates from the
principles of higher authority, and he attains firm faith in the scriptures by
understanding with all reasons and arguments. When we speak of
arguments and reason, it means arguments and reason on the basis of
revealed scripture. The first-class devotee is not interested in dry
speculative methods meant for wasting time. In other words, one who has
attained a mature determination in the matter of devotional service can be
accepted as the first-class devotee.
NOD Ch. 3
6. For preaching Ka consciousness, any material facility
may be employed:
One should not give up anything which can be utilized in the service of
the Lord. That is a secret of devotional service. Anything that can be
utilized in advancing Ka consciousness and devotional service should be
accepted. For instance, we are using many machines for the advancement of
our present Ka consciousness movement, machines like typewriters,
149
dictaphones, tape recorders, microphones and airplanes. Sometimes people
ask us, "Why are you utilizing material products if you condemn the
advancement of material civilization?" But actually we do not condemn. We
simply ask people to do whatever they are doing in Ka consciousness.
This is the same principle on which, in the Bhagavad-gt, Ka advised
Arjuna to utilize his fighting abilities in devotional service. Similarly, we
are utilizing these machines for Ka's service. With such sentiment for
Ka, or Ka consciousness, we can accept everything. If the typewriter
can be utilized for advancing our Ka consciousness movement, we must
accept it. Similarly, the dictaphone or any other machine must be used. Our
vision is that Ka is everything. Ka is the cause and effect, and
nothing belongs to us. Ka's things must be used in the service of Ka.
NOD Ch. 14
7. Converting even one person into a devotee assures going
back to Godhead:
The missionary goal of a devotee is to convert simply one person into a
pure devotee. In this way his admission to the spiritual kingdom is
guaranteed.
TLC Ch. 26
8. One who does not take advantage of the Ka
consciousness movement is doomed:
There is now a flood of the eternal nectar of love of Godhead due to the
incarnation of Lord Caitanya. All living entities are floating in that flood.
The entire world is now thankful to the Lord. Anyone who does not float in
this inundation is most condemned. Such a person cannot be delivered for
millions of kalpas.
One day of Brahm is called a kalpa. A yuga, or mah-yuga, consists of
150
4,320,000 years, and one thousand such mah-yugas constitute one kalpa.
The author of r Caitanya-caritmta says that if one does not take
advantage of the Ka consciousness movement of r Caitanya
Mahprabhu, he cannot be delivered for millions of such kalpas.
Cc. Antya 3.254-255
9. The devotee's desire that Ka be known all over the
universe is blessed by the Lord:
A pure devotee of the Lord like Brahm and those in his line of disciplic
succession always desire that the Lord be known all over the universe by
each and every one of the living entities. That desire of the devotee is
always blessed by the Lord.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.39
11. Success formula for preaching Ka consciousness: One
should act only to satisfy the Lord:
The first concern of a nondevotee is how to enjoy his personal sense
gratification at once, whereas the devotee's first concern is to satisfy the
Lord. This is the distinction between the nondevotee and the devotee....
While the demons fight to satisfy their own senses, devotees engage in
151
devotional service to satisfy the senses of the Lord. The members of the
Kna consciousness movement must be alert in regard to this point, and
then their preaching of the Ksa consciousness movement will be
successful.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.8.38
12. Devotees overcome difficulties in preaching work
through faith in Ka and the order of the spiritual
master:
... sometimes a representative of the Lord engaged in preaching work
meets various so-called difficulties. This was exhibited by Lord Nitynanda
when He delivered the two fallen souls Jagi and Mdhi, and similarly Lord
Jesus Christ was crucified by the nonbelievers. But such difficulties are
gladly suffered by the devotees in preaching because in such activities,
although apparently very severe, the devotees of the Lord feel
transcendental pleasure because the Lord is satisfied. Prahlda Mahrja
suffered greatly, but still he never forgot the lotus feet of the Lord. That is
because a pure devotee of the Lord is so purified in his heart that he cannot
leave the shelter of Lord Ka in any circumstances. There is no
self-interest in such service. The process of culturing knowledge by the
jns or the bodily gymnastics by the yogs are ultimately given up by the
respective performers, but a devotee of the Lord cannot give up the service
of the Lord, for he is ordered by his spiritual master. Pure devotees like
Nrada and Nitynanda Prabhu take up the order of the spiritual master as
the sustenance of life. They do not mind what becomes of the future of
their lives. They take the matter very seriously as the order comes from the
higher authority, from the representative of the Lord, or from the Lord
Himself.
rmad-Bhgavatam 2.8.6
152
13. Preaching creates an auspicious atmosphere; it must be
carefully done:
Any literature or narration in which the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, Uttamaloka, is described and glorified is certainly great, pure,
glorious, auspicious and all good.
The Ka consciousness movement is spreading all over the world
simply by describing Ka. We have published many books, including r
Caitanya-caritmta in seventeen volumes, four hundred pages each, as well
as Bhagavad-gt and The Nectar of Devotion. We are also publishing
rmad-Bhgavatam in sixty volumes. Wherever a speaker holds discourses
from these books and an audience hears him, this will create a good and
auspicious situation. Therefore the preaching of Ka consciousness must
be done very carefully by the members of the Ka consciousness
movement, especially the sannyss. This will create an auspicious
atmosphere.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.1.32
14. Preaching activities are transcendental:
A pure devotee of the Lord, being cognizant of the facts of the particular
time, object and circumstances, always desires to expand the number of
devotees of the Lord in various ways. Such expansions of transcendental
service may appear to be material to the materialist, but factually they are
expansions of the causeless mercy of the Lord towards the devotee. Plans for
such activities may appear to be material activities, but they are different in
potency, being engaged in the satisfaction of the transcendental senses of
the Supreme.
rmad-Bhgavatam 3.9.34
153
15. A preacher must distinguish between devotees and
nondevotees:
Unless one is a first-class devotee, he cannot be a preacher. A preacher is
generally a topmost devotee, but in order to meet the general populace, he
has to come to distinguish between devotees and nondevotees. Otherwise,
an advanced devotee makes no such distinctions. Indeed, he always sees
everyone engaged in the service of the Lord. When one engages in
preaching work, he must distinguish between people and understand that
some people are not engaged in devotional service of the Lord. The
preacher then has to take compassion upon such innocent people who do
not know how to worship the Lord.
Cc. Madhya 8.44
16. Mature disciples should preach, allowing the spiritual
master to retire to write and execute nirjana-bhajana:
Everyone should be engaged in preaching the cult of Ka
consciousness. In other words, when disciples are grown up and are able to
preach, the spiritual master should retire and sit down in a solitary place to
write and execute nirjana-bhajana. This means sitting silently in a solitary
place and executing devotional service. This nirjana-bhajana, which is the
silent worship of the Supreme Lord, is not possible for a neophyte devotee....
Only when one is mature can he sit in a solitary place and retire from
preaching all over the world. Following this example, the devotees of the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness now render service as
preachers in various parts of the world. Now they can allow the spiritual
master to retire from active preaching work. In the last stage of the spiritual
master's life, the devotees of the spiritual master should take preaching
activities into their own hands. In this way the spiritual master can sit down
in a solitary place and render nirjana-bhajana.
154
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.28.33
17. The purpose of selling books (and all activities in Ka
consciousness) is to remember Ka:
There are many regulative principles in the stras and directions given
by the spiritual master. These regulative principles should act as servants of
the basic principlethat is, one should always remember Ka and never
forget Him. This is possible when one chants the Hare Ka mantra.... One
may have other duties to perform under the direction of the spiritual
master, but he must first abide by the spiritual master's order to chant a
certain number of rounds.... Of all the regulative principles, the spiritual
master's order to chant at least sixteen rounds is most essential.
One may sell books or enlist life members or render some other service,
but these duties are not ordinary duties. These duties serve as an impetus for
remembering Ka. When one goes with a sakrtana party or sells books,
he naturally remembers that he is going to sell Ka's books. In this way, he
is remembering Ka....The conclusion is that one must act in such a way
that he will always remember Ka, and one must refrain from doing
things that make him forget Kna. These two principles form the basic
background of Krna consciousness.
Cc. Madhya 22.113
18. Opposition to sakrtana indicates its purity and
genuineness:
"No one should perform sakrtana on the streets of the city. Today I am
excusing the offense and returning home."
Such orders stopping sakrtana in the streets of the world's great cities
have been imposed upon members of the Hare Ka movement.... In most
cities of the Western world we have been arrested many times by the
155
police.... We must remember that such incidents took place in the past, five
hundred years ago, and the fact that they are still going on indicates that
our sakrtana movement is really authorized, for if sakrtana were an
insignificant material affair, demons would not object to it. The demons of
the time tried to obstruct the sakrtana movement started by r Caitanya
Mahprabhu. Similar demons are trying to obstruct the sakrtana
movement we are executing all over the world, and this proves that our
sakrtana movement is still pure and genuine, following in the footsteps of
r Caitanya Mahprabhu.
Cc. di 17.127
19. Preaching Ka consciousness can save the Western
students:
The Ka consciousness movement is very eager to present Vedic
literature in modern languages, especially Western languages such as
English, French and German.... The entire world is imitating the
materialistic civilization of the West, and therefore the Ka consciousness
movement is very much interested in giving the Western people knowledge
by translating the original Sanskrit Vedic literatures into Western
languages....
... The people of the West are seeing their students becoming hippies,
despite gorgeous arrangements for university education. The Ka
consciousness movement, however, is trying to convert misguided,
drug-addicted students to the service of Ka and engage them in the best
welfare activities for human society.
rmad-Bhgavatam 6.5.18
19a. Hearing, preaching and remembering the glories of the
Lord brings fearlessness:
156
It is one's duty to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead
through the hearing process. This is called rotavya. If one has heard
properly about the Supreme Personality of Godhead, his duty is to glorify
the Lord and preach His glories. This is called krtitavya. When one hears
about the Lord and glorifies Him, it is natural to think of Him. This is called
smartavya. All this must be carried out if one actually wants to be immune
from fear.
Cc. Madhya 22.110
20. Preacher-book-distributors are not beggars but are
performing highest welfare activity:
A sannys is supposed to beg from door to door. He does not beg simply
because he is hungry. His real purpose is to enlighten the occupant of every
house by preaching Ka consciousness.... Although the Gosvms were
very aristocratic, they became mendicants just to deliver the fallen souls
according to the order of r Caitanya Mahprabhu. One should also
consider that those who engage in the missionary activities of Ka
consciousness are under the guidance of r Caitanya Mahprabhu They are
not actually beggars; their real business is to deliver fallen souls. Therefore
they may go from door to door just to introduce a book about Ka
consciousness so that people can become enlightened by reading. Formerly
brahmacrs and sannyss used to beg from door to door. At the present
moment, especially in the Western countries, a person may be handed over
to the police if he begs from door to door. In Western countries, begging is
considered criminal. Members of the Ka consciousness movement have
no business begging. Instead, they work very hard to introduce some
literatures about Krna consciousness so that people can read them and be
benefited. However, if one gives some contribution to a Ka conscious
man, he never refuses it.
Cc. Madhya 8.39
157
21. Preachers should preach where the situation is
favorable:
... people are really interested in preaching in a favorable situation. If the
candidates for conversion are too disturbing, a preacher may not attempt to
spread Ka consciousness amongst them. It is better to go where the
situation is more favorable. This Ka consciousness movement was first
attempted in India, but the people of India, being absorbed in political
thoughts, did not take to it.... We preferred, therefore, to come to the West,
following the order of our spiritual master, and by the grace of Lord
Caitanya Mahprabhu this movement is becoming successful.
Cc. Madhya 7.109
22. Preaching of Ka consciousness angers demons:
It is said in Hitopadea, upadeo hi mrkh prakopya na ntaye. If
good instructions are given to a foolish person, he does not take advantage
of them, but becomes more and more angry. Prahlda Mahrja's authorized
instructions to his father were not accepted by Hirayakaipu as truth;
instead Hirayakaipu became increasingly angry at his great son, who was
a pure devotee. This kind of difficulty always exists when a devotee
preaches Ka consciousness to persons like Hirayakaipu, who are
interested in money and women.
rmad-Bhgavatam 7.8.11
23. Preaching as spreading nma-sakirtana:
Chanting of the Hare Ka mah-mantra is potent always, but it is
especially potent in this age of Kali. Therefore ukadeva Gosvm, while
instructing Mahrja Parkit, stressed this chanting of the Hare Ka
158
mantra.
kaler doa-nidhe rjann
asti hy eko mahn gua
krtand eva kasya
mukta-saga para vrajet
"My dear King, although Kali-yuga is full of faults, there is still one good
quality about this age. It is that simply by chanting the Hare Kna
mah-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted
to the transcendental kingdom." (Bhg 12.3.51)
Those who have accepted the task of spreading the Hare Ka
mah-mantra in full Ka consciousness should take this opportunity to
deliver people very easily from the clutches of material existence. Our duty,
therefore, is to follow the instructions of r Caitanya Mahprabhu and
preach the Ka consciousness movement all over the world very sincerely.
This is the best welfare activity for the peace and prosperity of human
society.
r Caitanya Mahprabhu's movement consists of spreading
ka-sakrtana. Para vijayate r-ka-sakrtanam: "All glories to the
r Ka sakrtana!" Why is it so glorious? This has also been explained by
r Caitanya Mahprabhu. Ceto-darpaa-mrjanam: [Cc. Antya 20.12] by
the chanting of the Hare Ka mah-mantra, one's heart is cleansed. The
whole difficulty is that in this age of Kali there is no sattva-gua and no
clearance of the heart, and therefore people are making the mistake of
identifying with their bodies. Even the big philosophers and scientists with
whom we deal are practically all under the impression that they are their
bodies... Thus the most dangerous of the dirty things within our hearts is
this misidentification of the body as the self.... This misconception is the
strongest impediment, and it must be removed. That is the instruction of
Bhagavad-gt and of r Caitanya Mahprabhu.... Caitanya Mahprabhu
therefore says, ceto-darpaa-mrjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]. To cleanse the core
of the heart, which is full of misunderstanding, is possible only through
r-ka-sakrtana. The leaders of the Ka consciousness movement
159
should very seriously take this opportunity to be kind to the fallen souls by
delivering them from the misunderstanding of materialistic life....
... The sakrtana movement, therefore, is a great opportunity. Simply by
hearing Bhagavad-gt and chanting the Hare Ka mah-mantra, one
becomes completely purified. Thus the struggle for existence ceases, and one
goes back home, back to Godhead.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.5.23
24. Preachers of Ka consciousness as paramahasas:
Understanding that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the friend of
everyone (suhda sarva-bhtnm [Bg. 5.29]), they [devotees] act as friends
of everyone on behalf of the Supreme Lord. Making no distinction between
one nation and another or one community and another, they preach Ka
consciousness, the teachings of Bhagavad-gt, everywhere. Thus they are
competent to see the lotus feet of the Lord. Such preachers in Ka
consciousness are called paramahasas. As indicated by the word
vimukta-saga, they have nothing to do with material conditions. One must
take shelter of such a devotee in order to see the Supreme Personality of
Godhead.
rmad-Bhgavatam 8.3.7
25. The Lord assists a pure devotee attempting to deliver
conditioned souls:
... a devotee is always engaged in preaching to deliver conditioned
souls.... A pure devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is always
thinking of how fallen conditioned souls can be delivered. The Supreme
Personality of Godhead, influenced by the merciful devotees' attempt to
deliver fallen souls, enlightens the people in general from within by His
causeless mercy.
160
rmad-Bhgavatam 4.29.46
26. The success of ISKCON preaching activities (book
distribution) is due to faith in previous cryas:
The secret of success in advancement in spiritual life is the firm faith of
the disciple in the orders of his spiritual master.... The Ka consciousness
movement is being propagated according to this principle, and therefore our
preaching work is going on successfully, in spite of the many impediments
offered by antagonistic demons, because we are getting positive help from
our previous cryas.... the success of the ISKCON party, the International
Society for Krishna Consciousness, which strictly follows guru and
Gaurnga, is increasing daily all over the world. rla Bhaktisiddhnta
Sarasvat hkura wanted to print as many books as possible and distribute
them all over the world. We have tried our best in this connection, and we
are getting results beyond our expectations.
Cc. di 12.8
1. How the ordinary citizen can engage in preaching:
... The citizens of the state must give in charity up to fifty percent of
their income for the purpose of creating a spiritual atmosphere in the state
or in human society, both individually and collectively. They should preach
the principles of Bhgavatam by (a) karma-yoga, or doing everything for the
satisfaction of the Lord, (b) regular hearing of the rmad-Bhgavatam from
authorized persons or realized souls, (c) chanting of the glories of the Lord
congregationally at home or at places of worship, (d) rendering all kinds of
service to bhgavatas engaged in preaching rmad-Bhgavatam and (e)
residing in a place where the atmosphere is saturated with God
consciousness. If the state is regulated by the above process, naturally there
will be God consciousness everywhere.

Chapter XXI
Concluding Words
Among His own associates, r Caitanya Mahiprabhu laughingly said, "I
came here to sell My emotional ecstatic love. Although I came to Vras to
sell My goods, there were no customers, and it appeared necessary for Me to
carry them back to My own country. All of you were feeling unhappy that
no one was purchasing My goods and that I would have to carry them away.
Therefore, by your will only, I have distributed them without charging."
When we began distributing the message of r Caitanya Mahprabhu in
the Western countries, a similar thing happened. In the beginning we were
very disappointed for at least one year because no one came forth to help
this movement, but by the grace of r Caitanya Mahprabhu, some young
boys joined this movement in 1966. Of course we distributed r Caitanya
Mahprabhu's message of the Hare Ka mah-mantra without bargaining
or selling. As a result, this movement has spread all over the world, with the
assistance of European and American boys and girls. We therefore pray for
all the blessings of r Caitanya Mahprabhu upon all the devotees in the
Western world who are spreading this movement.

Fortunately, even at our first meeting, His Divine Grace advised me to
preach the cult of r Caitanya Mahprabhu in English in the Western
countries.... I was...convinced that r Caitanya Mahprabhu's message is
the only panacea for suffering humanity. I was also convinced that the
message of r Caitanya Mahprabhu was then in the hands of a very expert
devotee and that surely the message of r Caitanya Mahprabhu would
spread all over the world.... I took his words very seriously and was always
thinking how to execute his order...
... If there is any credit to my activities of translating, it is all due to His
Divine Grace.... I am confident that he is very pleased by this work of

translation. He was very fond of seeing many books published to spread the
Ka consciousness movement. Therefore our society, the International
Society for Krishna Consciousness, has formed to execute the order of r
Caitanya Mahprabhu and His Divine Grace rla Bhaktisiddhnta
Sarasvat hkura....
... On this occasion, therefore, I request my disciples who are determined
to help me in this work to continue their cooperation fully, so that
philosophers, scholars, religionists and people in general all over the world
will benefit by reading our transcendental literatures such as
rmad-Bhgavatam and r Caitanya-caritmta.
