Guns and Teachers

School shootings are horrible. Maniacs decide that the idea of killing innocent
children and teachers is cool, so they enter school grounds toting a gun. It has
happened before. In fact, one of the first recorded school shootings happened in the
mid 1760s, when four Lenape American Indians entered a schoolhouse near
Greencastle, Pennsylvania. In the end, schoolmaster Enoch Brown and ten children
were killed only three kids surviving. This first school shooting became known as
the Pontiacs Rebellion School Massacre. Many more shootings have taken place
between then and now. Most of these shootings have happened in the 19
th
and 20
th

centuries. Whether it was an accidental or intentional, they were all very fatal and
tragic.
Many people believe that with the seemingly rising amount of school
shootings in America, teachers should have the ability to carry guns on school
campus. I strongly disagree with this proposition. Having teachers bring guns to
school is unnecessary and unacceptable. I have seen many teachers in the past who
were horrible people and hated their students. You never know when that teacher
might snap. Some students are even worse. It has happened before. If a student
were to have a grudge on a certain teacher for any reason at all, they could
somehow get hold of the teachers firearm and kill them. There are some pretty
horrible people out there, and you never know what might happen.
People also believe that if people knew about the teachers guns, then they
would not even try to start a school shooting. That is not true. Many of the maniacs
who started these school shootings were out of their mind. They went in and did not
expect to come out. They knew that if they opened fire on a school campus, there
was a possibility that the police, or someone else, would retaliate. I do see the need
for firearms on school campuses, but I dont see why teachers need to be the ones to
have them. There is a reason that our country has police officers and security
guards.
I believe that every school should have at least two security guards and
police officers to use as protection. They are actually trained and certified in using
firearms, and the police officers actually have the ability to apprehend and arrest the
suspected shooter. Since the police officer/security guard is trained in the use of a
firearm, they would know what to do in the situation. Two police officers against
one shooter have a pretty good chance of taking care of the problem. However, fifty
teachers untrained in the use of firearms would be even worse. They could
accidentally shoot each other, or even some students. It is inevitable. We could avoid
a lot more trouble this way. This would solve a whole ton of problems, and we
wouldnt have to worry about crazy teachers and students with guns.
In the past, with school shootings, there have been problems with the SWAT
teams and police trying to get into the school to deal with the shooter. That is
probably because the shooter would attack the police upon seeing them. However, if
a school shooting were to happen, the police that were already on school campus
would already be inside the school to take care of the problem. The police are
trained and experienced on how to deal with a firefight, so they would know where
to take cover, when to reload, and how to take care of the shooter.
On December 27
th
, 1890, in Staunton, Virginia, two students had found an old
pistol. A.H. Hathaway, 15 years old, and James Whitworth, 17 years old, had found
the gun in the basement of their school. Both were students of the Kables Military
Academy. While Whitworth was pretending to shoot Hathaway with the pistol,
unaware that it was loaded, he accidentally shot and killed his friend. In another
