Less than a year after his
hiring, St. Clair Shores
City Manager, Phil Ludos,
resigned last Friday, May
23, effective immediately.
Differences in opinions
about the future direction
for the city, were cited in a
press release issued by the
city, a release that went on
to say that St. Clair
Shores City Council and
Ludos mutually agreed to
terminate the relation-
ship.
Councilman Chris
Vitale went into further de-
tail about the resignation.
There was a feeling
that councils expectations
were not in the same place
as Mr. Ludos. The city
charter, which is regulated
by the state, allows very
few options to the council
beyond a change in the
city manager. I assure you
this decision was not
made casually, Vitale
said.
The councilman added
that Ludos left the position
with a severance package.
Severance packages
are necessary to attract
good candidates, Vitale
said. When we last adver-
tised this position, few
candidates were applying
until we offered better sep-
aration conditions. This is
a high-responsibility job
where you must please a
majority of seven bosses.
That said, the severance
accepted is not an outra-
geous sum, roughly three
months of salary, and half
of our contractual obliga-
tion. I feel this speaks well
of Mr. Ludos character.
As to what the council
does next, Councilwoman
Candice Rusie, who was
the lone dissenter in the
vote to hire Ludos in the
first place, said discus-
sions are needed before
any decisions can be
made.
We need to have those
discussions and Im sure
we will be having those
very soon, she said.
In the meantime, the in-
terim position is likely to
be offered to current
Assistant City Manager,
Mike Smith, who held the
interim title before
Ludos was hired.
Mike has served us well
multiple times during
transitions and Im hoping
he will accept this respon-
sibility again, Vitale said.
Vitale also mentioned
the positives that came
during Ludos tenure.
There have been many

The numbers were
staggering, in excess
of 85,000 people lining
the route.
More importantly,
the smiles were in the
thousands as well.
On a near perfect
weather day in May,
St. Clair Shores hosted
the 62nd annual St.
Clair Shores Memorial
Day Parade along
Harper Avenue be-
tween 9 and 11 mile
roads.
Im really enjoying
mysel f , Ci ndy
Hodges, who came
down 9 Mile from
Eastpointe, said. Ive
taken my kids to the
last three or four and
we havent been disap-
pointed.
Gilbert Douglas
made the trek from
Detroit to the event
a journey hes made
since 1975.
Ive been coming
here a long, long time,
he said. Ive got to see
it grow and change,
and I like it. I really
do.
Mount Clemens resi-
dents Adam and Kelly
Andrews brought their
7- year- ol d son,
Connor.
This is Connors
first parade, Kelly
Andrews said. And
hes kind of in awe
right now because the
floats and bands and
all that just keep com-
ing.
Adam Andrews sees
the events as more
than just marching
bands and colorful
floats.

Phil Ludos resigned his

last Friday after about
nine months on the job.

Only weeks before the
planned re-opening of
Gilberts Lodge, and
about seven months after
a fire ripped through the
famed local eatery, a sec-
ond blaze derailed any
hopes of the Harper
Avenue hotspot opening
its doors to the public any-
time soon.
I just feel so bad for
them, Shores resident
Emily Kanter said. I drive
by every day on my way
to work, and I see them
working so hard to get
back open, and then this.
Its tragic. My heart goes
out to everybody that
works there, and to the
owners.
Resident Leo Getz
echoed the sentiment.
Its really too bad,
Getz said. Ive been go-
ing there for a long time. I
was looking forward to
returning real soon here.

This years First State
Bank Fi r ewor ks
Extravaganza promises
to be a day full of fun
and activities for the en-
tire family.
It also promises to
light up the sky of the
shoreline of Veterans
Memorial Park with one
of the most spectacular
fireworks displays in
Macomb County.
However, 2014 also
promises to deliver a
unique twist to the pop-
ular event.
Members of the
Activities Committee
hope to organize a syn-
chronized dance to the
1960s hi t , " The
Locomotion," by Little
Eva.
The Guiness World
Record f or The
Locomotion is currently
1,752 people, Activities
Committee member
Maureen Antushevich
said. That has been the
record since 2007. We
are going to break that
this year at the First
State Bank Fireworks
Extravaganza. Our goal
is to have 2,000 people
doing 'The Locomotion'
for the 'Guiness Book of
World Records'.
Antushevich said offi-
cials from "Guiness
Book of World Records"
will be on hand so they
can determine at that
time that the record was
broken.
Were looking for vol-
unteers because part of
the requirement is that
the group, since its so
large, is broken down
into small groups of 50
people, she said. We
need one person, they
call it a steward, for ev-
ery 50 people. We will
accept anyone who
would like to help out so
we can break the world
record.
The attempt will begin
at about 4 p.m. and
Antushevich encour-
aged people to arrive
early.
The gates open at 2
p.m. for the fireworks,
she said. We kept ad-
mission at $2 this year.
Itll be very fun, and we
hope that everyone will
want to be a part of
that.
Theres never been a
dance so easy to do, fel-
l o w Ac t i v i t i e s
Committee member
Dave Rubello said. So
come on out and help us
shatter the record.
The dance must con-
tinue for five minutes,
and a sample of the
dance moves is available
on the committees

School bond
proposal
To the Editor:
I am a student from
South Lake High School
and I am writing to in-
form readers about the
South Lake Schools
bond proposal that will
be voted on in the Aug.
5th special election.
I believe that the bond
proposal is an amazing
deal that is put on the
table and will bring cap-
ital improvements as
well as upgrades to ex-
isting programs.
I believe this bond is a
way for South Lake to
show the community
that we are on the cusp
of something great, our
own renaissance, if you
will.
Our district can get a
bad rap for just about
anything.
But, the fact that peo-
ple honestly think that
gangs operate out of the
halls of this school is
preposterous.
I believe that the bond
will show the communi-
ty that we are a strong
school, were here to
stay and we will not be
bullied into submission
by other districts.
But the recent distress
this district has faced
under the pressures of
decreased enrollment
have only made us
stronger.
I urge all voters of St.
Clair Shores to vote
yes, on the South
Lake Schools bond pro-
posal that will be on the
ballot on Aug.5.
I am asking as a stu-
dent that you support
me, my friends, our pro-
grams and our staff.
Give us the chance to
show you what weve
got, pass the bond and
youll see just how great
we really are.

happen now.
The second fire, which
started in a mechanical
room that contains elec-
trical panels, is under in-
vestigation, by St. Clair
Shores Fre Marshall
Melissa Bodnar.
We investigate every
fire to determine the
cause, Bodnar said. And
were almost done look-
ing at this one, and then
the people at Gilberts can
go from there.
Bodnar said the fire was
extensive, but that was
only a part of the overall
damage to the facility,
Bodnar said.
Theres a lot of smoke
damage, and when there
is smoke damage those
damaged items are ru-
ined, she said. But I
wouldnt call it a total loss
at all.
The fire, which was
called in to the depart-
ment about 4 a.m.
Thursday, May 22, was
controlled within an hour,
with the help of Roseville,
Eastpointe and Warren
fire departments.

positives I attribute to Mr.
Ludos, he said. I am
very pleased with our
new leadership in the po-
lice department. Other
recent hires have shown
the can-do spirit that will
be a requirement going
forward. There has been
a great effort made by
staff to continue our
strong financial situation
position. Consider that
we have a deep talent
pool in our fire, clerk,
DPW, parks and recre-
ation and assessing de-
partments. Theyve all
ridden out multiple
storms and continued to
provide benchmark mu-
nicipal service.

The Optimist Club of St.
Clair Shores continued its
tradition of honoring St.
Clair Shores finest last
Thursday morning with
the 3rd annual Call to
Courage St. Clair Shores
Police Department
Appreciation and Awards
Breakfast at Lakeland
Banquet Centre.
The support of the
community is what its all
about, said St. Clair
Shores Police Department
Chief Todd Woodcox.
Were a part of the com-
munity, but were also sep-
arate from the community.
Having community sup-
port when they want to put
on an event like this deoes
amazing things for morale
around the department. It
reinforces that what we do
everyday is the right thing,
and that we have the com-
munities' support. This is
just huge.
Three awards were
handed out to officers and
detectives during the
event, each one introduced
by Woodcox complete
with a rundown of events
that led to the honor.
Distinguished Service
Award Detective
Gordon Carrier
On June 9, 2013, a
10-year-old girl narrowly
escaped an abduction at-
tempt, Woodcox told the
crowd gathered for the
event that morning.
Detective Carrier was as-
signed to the case with no
physical evidence and just
a vague description.
Officer Carrier developed
a suspect who was already
on the Sex Offender
Registry, and talked his
way into the suspects
house.
Woodcox went on to ex-
plain how Carrier ob-
served clothing that
matched the description
given by the victim, and
engaged in a lengthy inter-
view of the suspect that led
to statements connecting
the suspect with the crime.
A warrant was issued
and the suspected was ar-
rested.
The suspect has since
pleaded no contest, to
kidnapping, which carries
a penalty of life in prison,
Woodcox said.
This creep will never
again be a danger to our
children. he said.
Meritorious Service
Award Detective/
Sergeant Jay Cohoe and
Detective Margaret Eidt
On January 14, 2014,
Detective Eidt was as-
signed to investigate the
disappearance of Ramsey
Scrivo, as reported by his
mother, Donna Scrivo,
Woodcox said. Detective
Eidt began an aggressive
investigation, and the in-
formation discovered
would prove very helpful
in what would soon be a
homicide investigation.
The chief said that Eidt
and Cohoe stayed after
their shift, on their own
time, once body parts
were found in St. Clair
County, and began putting
together a plan in case the
remains were those of
Ramsey Scrivo.
The remains were iden-
tified as Ramsey Scrivo.
Eidt and Cohoe, with
the assistance of the rest of
the investigation team,
spent countless hours on
multiple search warrants,
neighborhood canvasses
and working with multiple
law enforcement agen-
cies, putting together a
case that will keep a dan-
gerous murderer locked
away, Woodcox said.
Life Saving Award -
Officer Stephen Lathrop
Woodcox concluded the
awards portion of the
event by honoring Lathrop
and telling the crowd how
Lathrop was dispatched to
a 74-year-old male who
had collapsed on the 16th
green of the St. Clair
Shores Golf Club.
Officer Lathrop knew a
few seconds could be the
difference between life
and death, Woodcox said.
So he proceeded to drive
his scout car across the
golf course to the victim.
Lathrop deployed an
Automated External
Defibrillator in an at-
tempt to restore the vic-
tims heart rhythm, but
the effort failed,
Woodcox said.
Officer Lathrop then
began CPR on the victim
until advanced life support
could arrive, he said.
Because of Officer
Lathrops efforts, the heart
attack victim is alive to-
day.

6A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014
Top left, this years parade was filled with patriotic dis-
plays, including these horses from Harmony Acres.
Above, Vito Hibbert expressed his gratitude to veterans
with a sign he made just for the parade. Left, Detroit
Pistons mascot, Hooper, fired up the crowd from atop
the Pistons RV. Below, Macomb County Young Marines
marched the route to a chorus of applause.
Members of the Lake Shore band entertain the crowd.
Honor.
Freedom.

PARADE
Continued from page 1A
I think this is a great
way for parents to edu-
cate their kids about the
honor of being a veter-
an, he said. I need to
show my son that we
have to celebrate the
sacrifices our soldiers
are making and have
made over the years.
The parade is a great fo-
rum to do that.
For 10-year-old Noah
Gabriel, the events was
nothing short of spec-
tacular.
My mind is, like,
blown, he said, shortly
after shaking the hand
and saluting one of the
dozens of veterans
walking the parade
route. I got saluted by
an army guy. Thats
cool.
62nd annual St. Clair Shores Memorial
Day Parade honors veterans and enter-
tains a crowd of about 85,000 spectators.

8A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014
Sports
The three St. Clair
Shores girls softball
teams are preparing for
the first round of the state
playoffs this weekend, the
districts.
Lake Shore and
Lakeview compete in
Division 1, while South
Lake is in Division 2.
All three have a chance
to win the championship.
Only Lakeview is the de-
fending champ, beating
Grosse Pointe North in
last years title game.
Lake Shore lost an ex-
tra-inning game to LAnse
Creuse in the title game,
and South Lake dropped a
close one to Center Line in
the championship tilt.
Below is a look at each
team and its competition
in each district.
Lakeview
Lakeview is the host
team, but the tournament
is being played at Grosse
Pointe South. Head coach
Steve Corbett and his
Huskies get a semifinal
against Grosse Pointe
North.
Lakeview finished third
in the Macomb Area
Conference White
Division at 7-5 and is 10-10
overall as of Friday, May
23.
They swept a double-
header from the
Norsemen on Monday,
May 19, winning 9-7 in 8
innings and 13-2.
The Huskies are led by
senior Becky Corbett and
sophomore Alexis
Nowowiecki. They have
done the pitching this sea-
son and are the leading
hitters in average and
power numbers.
Corbett is the catalyst of
the offense. When she gets
on base, look out for stolen
bases because her speed is
tough to defense.
Other seniors on the
squad are Tabitha Adkins,
Josalyn Spear, Hannah
Mathies, Olivia Peraino
and Beth Cooley. Juniors
are Taylor Genzman, a
lefty slapper, Jessica Bohl
and Maria Mlynarek,
while Cheyenne Smigiel is
a sophomore and Emily
Seccombe is a freshman.
For the Huskies to re-
peat as district champi-
ons, their top three in the
order, Corbett, Genzman
and Nowowiecki, have to
get on base and the rest of
the lineup has to drive
them in if they get the
chance off the districts
best pitcher, South fresh-
man Emma St. John.
Lake Shore
Lake Shore has the best
chance to win a district ti-
tle, but it, too, has to beat a
good foe once again,
LAnse Creuse.
The Shorians finished
second in the MAC White
Division at 9-3 and they
take an 18-11 mark into
the state playoffs. They
finished division play last
week by splitting a dou-

June Fest promises to be a fun-filled day for fami-
lies from all over the area..
Festival is a family-centered event
June Fest 2014 is only
days away, and the offer-
ings of fun for families
continues to grow.
The event is slated to
get underway at 10 a.m.
Saturday, June 7, along
the stretch of Greater
Mack just south of 9 Mile
Road known as down-
town St. Clair Shores.
The annual event aims
to entertain the commu-
nity as well as introduce it
to the businesses in the
downtown area of the
city.
This years fair fea-
tures arts and crafts,
sidewalk sales from
businesses, dance per-
formances, music, a pet-
ting zoo, train rides,
Tootsie the Clown, face
painting and a Made in
Michigan Food Court
just to name a few of the
attractions aimed at fam-
ilies during the event.
A $500 raffle is also
available.
Proceeds from the sale
of raffle tickets go to The
Lake House.

South Lake, Lake Shore and Lakeview softball

ning later this week.
bleheader with Chippewa
Valley and sweeping a
doubleheader against
Grosse Pointe North.
Lake Shores veteran
leaders are Andrea Rico,
Tayl or LaPort e,
Mackenzie Nemitz,
Brooke Wauters, Jordyn
Dunlap and McKenzie
Alvae.
However, head coach
Will Puvalowski has other
talented players to lean
on, including Natalie
VanDerHaegen, Jordan
Miller and Sarah
Ratl edge. Natal i e
Stepenako, Anika
Champine and Gabby
Loprieto are solid contrib-
utors, too.
They bring an awesome
offense to the state play-
offs, but can their pitching
be strong enough to beat
the Lancers?
LAnse Creuse faces
Roseville and Lake Shore
gets Warren Woods-Tower
in the semifinals. Both are
heavy favorites to square
off in what should be a fan-
tastic district champion-
ship game.
Lake Shore wants re-
venge.
South Lake
South Lake, under long-
time head coach Dave
Ahearn, won the MAC
Silver Division with a
perfect 12-0 mark and
14-3 overall.
The Cavaliers best
competition in the divi-
si on came from
Clintondale and they
won two tough games to
claim the crown.
The leaders are seniors
Sarah Nelson and Krista
Nannini.
It has been more than
a decade since the
Cavaliers have won a
district crown and they
havent under Ahearns
tutelage.
South Lake is heavily
favored to make the fi-
nal, as is host Center
Line. These rivals met
last year in the finals
with Center Line win-
ning, and they met earli-
er in the season with the
Panthers winning a 1-0
game.
South Lake has a good
chance to win, but it has
to play defense behind
Nelson to get the job
done.

1-2B AUTOMOTIVE | 5-7B CLASSIFIEDS
SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2014
onda put a
multi-drive
system in
its 2014
Accord
Hybrid, with two of three
components relying on
electric power.
Like a bookish or
laptop-ish student,
Honda has studied the
market, scrutinized the
competition and come up
with a different formula
for improved fuel econo-
my. And it claims its 2014
Accord Hybrid is excep-
tional and perhaps the
best among mid-size se-
dans, with an EPA city
rating of 50 miles per gal-
lon.
Think about it: 50 mpg
for all those tedious er-
rands and urban com-
mutes, all in a comfort-
able five-passenger se-
dan that can be equipped
with a camera that cap-
tures outside blind spots
when a right-hand turn is
made following the use of
the turn-signal. Another
available feature is a
warning on a screen di-
rectly in front of the driv-
er that reads BRAKE.
The car doesnt brake au-
tonomously this is only
a suggestion that it might
be a good idea to avoid
the vehicle ahead or your
trash container, in case
you hadnt already fig-
ured that out.
These features will add
to the price as will other
available options. The ba-
sic 2014 Accord Hybrid,
with the Intelligent Multi-
Mode Drive developed by
Honda, starts at a com-
petitive $29,155. Models
in addition to the base
model are the EX-L and
an Accord Touring.
Here, as we understand
it, is how the multi-mode
system works. The EV
mode likely the most
efficient of the three
modes moves the car
from an electric-powered
motor. The gasoline mo-
tor is not engaged and
there is, according to
Honda, no loss of energy
from its friction. Friction
steals energy.
In the second mode,
the hybrid drive mode,
the gasoline engine pro-
duces electricity and then
continues to power the
car. The third mode, the
one engaged at highway
speeds, is the traditional
gasoline-powered en-
gine, in this case a 2.0-li-
ter four.
The batteries in the
Accord Hybrid are lithi-
um-ion. In deceleration,
kinetic energy is cap-
tured and routed to the
lithium-ion battery pack.
In Hondas words, this
system transitions be-
tween electric motor
power, gasoline engine
power and hybrid gas-
electric propulsion, deliv-

ering power to the wheels
without the need for a
conventional transmis-
sion.
We noticed a lot of
whirring as the multi-
mode system was spend-
ing added time in electric
power. Better economy
comes for the small price
of some added noise.
The base Accord
Hybrid comes with stan-
dard features including
Honda Lane Watch and
rearview camera, plus a
10-way power drivers
seat, heated side mirrors
and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The Accord Hybrid EX-L
adds leather seating,
heated front seats with
memory drivers seat,
360-watt premium audio
and power moonroof.
Accord Hybrid Touring
offers an HDD navigation
system, LED headlights
and adaptive cruise con-
trol.
Honda has revised its
driver and front passen-
ger SmartVent side air
bags. Designed to help
provide pelvic and thorax
protection in the event of
a severe side impact, the
outboard-mounted now
deploy in a way that miti-
gates the risk of injury to
a smaller seat occupant.
The forward collision
warning system, which is
included on EX-L and
Touring models, uses a
camera mounted in the
upper portion of the
windshield to detect a ve-
hicle ahead. Audible and
visuals warnings alert the
driver when the system
determines that a colli-
sion with a detected vehi-
cle is likely, Honda said.
The driver remains re-
sponsible for the safe op-
eration of the vehicle.
And like other Honda
models, the Accord
Hybrid has an impact-ab-
sorbing front body design
to help attenuate energy
in the event of a frontal
collision with a pedestri-
an.
The 2014 Honda
Accord Hybrid is assem-
bled in Marysville, Ohio.
Honda said in the past
three years it has invest-
ed nearly $2.7 billion in
innovations to and ex-
pansion of its North
American operations,
with more than $1 billion
spent in Ohio alone.

the 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. These models
are the first to combine the classic Targa con-
cept with cutting edge roof technology. As with
the original 911 Targa of 1965, the new models
feature the Targa roof bar, a movable front roof
section and wraparound rear window. The new
models roof segment can be opened and closed
