The metropolitan area of Kobe and Osaka is viewed as the urban as well as industrial
area in Japan. Because Japan is divided into different regions, Osaka is located in the
Hanshin Industrial Zone. This area of Japan is best known for it's impact in providing
industrial services to Japan, while the Kansai region is referred to as the more political
and religious area of Japan. In this region of Kansai, you are more likely to find temples
and shrines, as opposed to factories and smoke stacks.

Osaka, Japan has it's own unique and diverse personality that is shared among it's people
and the city itself. The data base "ProQuest" explains to us that Osaka has it's own
economic personality as well. Japan has a unique economy, as indicated during the
period of 1979 to 1984. During this 5 year period, Japan saw a major economic down
fall, which ultimately led to the vanishing of their "legendary" saving rate. The fall of
this saving rate can be traced back to the ages of the non-working and working
population. The low ratio both of the aged (over 64) and young (under 19) to the
working-age population also had relative absence from the Japanese population has
tended to boost aggregate saving rates.

There are a variety of geographic features that play a part in binding Osaka, Japan with
it's prefecture. The article from this data base gives us a look as to how the geography of
Osaka connects the city itself, to it's prefectures which act as the city's tourist hub.
Osaka's Prefecture is a little west of the center of the Japanese archipelago. The
prefecture is bounded by the Osaka Bay on the west, and by mountains on the north, east
and south. The distinct characteristics of Osaka's geographic features serve as a
connector so to speak, for tourists to have access to the city, as well as the prefecture it
self.

the population not just in Osaka, but in Japan as a whole. We can observe that Osaka
holds the second largest population in Japan, with 8.8 million people living there. In first
is Tokyo with a population of nearly 12.6 million people.

Hulme, D. C. (1996). Osaka ready for the spotlight. Japan Quarterly, 43(4), 82.
Osaka, Japan and it's population have their own unique personalities. This article from
the Japan Quarterly on ProQuest explains that Osaka was once Japan's capital (1,350
years ago). However now that Tokyo has come to power as Japan's most focused city,
Osaka is now seen as the focal point only for the Kansai region. Osaka now works to
attract tourists with their not only their historical landmarks, but their modern business
buildings as well. Business savy tourists are heavily targeted in Osaka, as they look to
enhance thier economic activity.

Although the population of Osaka is at a whopping 8 million at this point in time, a large
percentage of the population was lost during the period of time from 1975 to 1980. Of
the 50% percent that were diagnosed with the cancer in 1975, it is estimated that only 13-
15% were cured. The population of males that were affected by this cancer was said to
be at around 40%, while the women's numbers were only 13%. However as time went
on, and Osaka became more technologically enhacned, patients were diagnosed and aided
quicker, nursing the population back to good health.

Although Osaka is a city centered around religion, they hold possession of some major
Buddhist artifacts and shrines, one of the more unique being the Buddhist Goddess of
Mercy. The wooden statue was crafted in 721, however for unknown reasons, it was
tossed into a sea near Osaka, left to only be found 15 years later. Now, the towering 30
foot statue sits in Kamakura, allowing tourists to visit the statue, as well as the temple
that was constructed to go along with the shrine.
