Materials of learning Reported Speech Reported speech refers to using a noun clause to report what someone has said. No quotation marks are used. Reported speech can be composed from these following sentences: 1. Statement 2. Imperrative 3. Interrogative
Statement When we use reported speech, we usually talk about the past. So, the verbs are changed into the past in reported spech. For example: No. Direct Speech Indirect Speech 1. Ill be glad to help you, said Marcus. Marcus said that he would be glad to help me. 2. Youre a good man, said Marcus. Marcus said that I was a good man. 3. This is my axe, said the greedy man. The greedy man said that that was his axe.
When we want to report what someone has said, we usually do not repeat their exact words. At this matter, we use our own words. It is what we call indirect speech. Example: He asked me to open the door. My brother said that he wanted to buy a new T-shirt. While Drect Speech is someone statement or opinion said orally by the speaker. I want to spend my vacation but I dont know where to go. Jane said that she wanted to spend my vacation but that she did not know wehere to go. 6. Im going to Bandung for a few days, Ill phone you when I get back. Jane said that she was going to Bandung for a few days and that she would phone me when she got back.
