Marblehead Festival of Arts

Arts and more at annual festival

By Will Broaddus
Staff writer

T h e c r e a t i ve s i d e o f
Marblehead has been displayed at the Marblehead Festival of Artseach Fourth of July
weekend since 1962.
The event celebrates our
countrys birthday with a fireworks display and concert that
use Marblehead Harbor as a
breathtaking backdrop.
The festival also takes advantage of Marbleheads beautiful
beaches and parks to provide a
setting for every type of art visitors might appreciate.
Musical performances for a
variety of tastes, featuring local
and regional talent and also
appealing to all age groups, take
the stage at Crocker Park.
The 2014 performing arts
lineup will include local favorite
Julie Dougherty, Little Caruso
Clark Rubinshtein, Boston Music
Award Winner blues pianist David
Maxwell, former American Idol
crooner John Stevens, and Fourth
of July headliner, Entrain.
Afternoon performances from local
teens will run Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, beginning at noon.
The film festival is also held in
Crocker Park, in the evening, with
imaginative short works that range
between 2 and 20 minutes in length.
With styles ranging from comic
and animated to experimental, these
works feature the talents of a mixture
of high school students, art school
graduates and media professionals.
The best of painting, photography,
sculpture and printmaking from Essex
County and beyond are displayed in
Abbot Hall, King Hooper Mansion, St.
Michaels Church and other venues
around Marblehead.
These are juried art shows, with
entries selected by judges who also
award prizes to the best works in several categories.
Theater and writing are also represented at the festival, with readings
from dramatic works at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead and readings
of short stories from participants in Writers
World, the festivals literary salon.
Writers World also features workshops and
presentations led by established local authors.
There are sand sculpture competitions for

as a kite festival, complete with sessions on
making your own kite.
A popular Childrens Festival has been held
in recent years that features arts and activities for children age 10 and younger. This
festival is free, although organizers ask that

children be accompanied by a parent.

A generation of new sailors will be trained
witha workshop on building model boats
from kits, which ends with a regatta at
Redds Pond.An adult must accompany all
children at this event.
At a street festival held during the weekend, the streets are blocked off so performers

Salem Heritage Days

An event for Salem, by Salem

By Will Broaddus
Staff writer

SALEM Salem Heritage

Days are organized by residents
of Salem for residents of Salem,
to celebrate the city they all call
home.
For more than 50 years, the
first 10 days of August have been
set aside for bringing activities
and entertainment to the streets
of Witch City.
First and foremost, Heritage
Days honor Salems seniors with
a dinner dance and other special
events and discounts throughout
the city.
But to show appreciation for
children, as well, a kids night is
usually held on Salem Common
with face painting, bounce houses
and other fun activities.
There are two new Heritage
Days events for 2014, starting
with a Concert on the Common
to kick things off on the night of
Friday, Aug. 1.
The first weekend of Heritage Days
will also feature Bridgin Gaps, a free
concert at Salem Willows with performances ranging from local and nonlocal recording artists, live bands,
dance groups, poets and other performance styles.
There will also be guest speakers from nonprofit and charitable
organizations, part of an event
catering to all ages and tastes and
seeking to bridge gaps between
generations, cultures and musical
palates.
While all of this years schedule
isnt yet set, Heritage Days usually
features live musical performances
on Derby Wharf.
There have also been parties and
trips around the harbor on Friendship or other seaworthy vessels.
For anyone curious about the environment below the water, muck
walks tour Salems tidal pools and
take a close look at the creatures that
live there.

There are sports to watch, including the Witches Cup, in which cyclists
circle the Common at high speeds, as
well as a firemans muster and a longdistance swim.
And there are sports for everyone to compete in, which last year includeda Bridge

BEVERLY Of the six bigname musicals that make up

North Shore Music Theatres
2014 season, theres one in particular that theater owner Bill
Hanney is really excited to bring
to town.
The Little Mermaid, Hanney
said, will likely be the biggest
show at the theater ever.
Its not been this side of New
York City ever, he said. Were
one of the lucky ones to get the
rights to it.
Hanney, who saw the show on
Broadway, likened the musical
to the colorful, elaborate stage
adaptation of The Lion King.
Based on the 1989 Disney
film and one of Hans Christian
Andersens stories, The Little
Mermaid will be quite the production, Hanney said, including elaborate costumes, aerial
stunts and a score that many
will recognize from its animated
counterpart.
Being in a round, we get to be
really creative, Hanney added.
The season opens June 3 with
Cole Porters musical comedy,
Anything Goes, followed by
The Little Mermaid in July
and the ever-popular Grease
in August. Chicago brings All
That Jazz and more to town at
the end of September, followed
by the return of Les Miserables
at the end of October.
Closing out the season in
December is the theaters annual
musical production of A Christmas Carol. Fans will be pleased
to know David Coffee is reprising his role of the curmudgeonly
miser Ebenezer Scrooge.
The theater, which celebrates
its 60th anniversary next year,
remains a popular destination
for couples and families alike.
Last year, it broke its own show
run record with two of its musicals The Sound of Music and
Miss Saigon and this year
has already surpassed last years
subscription sales, Hanney said.
In addition to its annual season schedule, the theater also

32nd Annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival

Antique boat festival makes a little music

By Tom Dalton
STAFF WRITER

SALEM Once again this

summer, Salem Harbor will host
magnificent boats from yesteryear when Brewer Hawthorne
Cove Marina holds the 32nd
annual Antique & Classic Boat
Festival.
A wide variety of private
yachts and wooden boats will be
on display the weekend of Aug.
23 and 24.
Where else can one see 1900s60s motor yachts, mahogany
speedboats, sloops, yawls, schooners and a 19th-century goldleaf canoe, festival coordinator
Pat Wells said in a press release.
Although many of these craft
are museum quality, they are real
boats in the water and in use by
their owners today.
One of the vessels expected to
return this year is Speedwell, a
1921 cabin cruiser. Not only is the
old Elco a magnificent sight, but its
owner is one of several boat-owning musicians who have been known to stroll the
docks during the festival serenading other
boat owners.
The public loved that, Wells said.
Music, it turns out, has become an unexpected byproduct of the festival.
This tradition may have started with the
late Nina Vickers, a harp player whose husband, Russ Vickers, used to own Hawthorne
Cove Marina. She often played on the docks
alone or as part of a trio, Wells said.
Last year, the owner of a 60-foot motorsailer brought along her cello.
She invited some musician friends on

board, and we were getting a cello concert,
Wells said.
One year, Billy Joels boat came to the festival. Unfortunately, the famous piano man
did not attend. But we got a very nice captain, Wells said.
Along with the boats and, hopefully, a little spontaneous music, the festival features
acrafts fair, artists, an old-time band, childrens activities, the Blessing of the Fleet and
a boat parade.
