ELIGIBILITY
Teacher/School Eligibility
Any K-6 teacher in a public or private (not-for-profit) school is eligible. Grants will be awarded to the teacher’s
school and will be restricted for use by the teacher in his/her classroom. Not more than one application per teacher is
allowed.

Project Eligibility
• Projects must advance the teacher’s science and math teaching units in grades K-6.
• Projects must occur during the school day. Before-school, after –school or take home projects are not eligible.
• Projects must be completed by May 1st so that a project final report can be submitted by May 15th.
• Projects should take place over at least three class sessions.
• Projects should not be based solely on the purchase of a pre-packaged kit.

Budget Eligibility
Funds may be requested for the purchase of project materials for student use only. Computer hardware, audio-visual
equipment, and field trip expenses may not be included in the budget.

CRITERIA
The following criteria will be significant in determining successful proposals:

Clarity. Does this project description make sense? The proposal must be written so the reader has a clear
understanding of the project activities, goals, material needs and evaluation components.

Completeness. The application must adhere to the guidelines and provide all of the requested information.

Timeline. Can the project be completed in the time allotted? In order to achieve its objectives within the suggested
implementation dates, the project description must be reasonable in scope.

Evaluation. The proposed project must demonstrate an evaluation component that will present clear educational
outcomes to be discussed in the final project report.

Cost Effectiveness. Are the project materials excessive in cost or number requested? The project cost should appear
reasonable and appropriate for the activities and outcomes described.

Creativity. To what extent is this an innovative approach? The proposed project must demonstrate an effort to
engage young people in hands-on learning in ways that enhance the current curriculum.

Impact. The project should be challenging and should actively engage students in a positive learning experience.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCES
All applicants are encouraged to review national mathematics and science standards when designing a project. For
more information visit the following web sites: www.nctm.org (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and
www.nsta.org (National Science Teachers Association).

DEADLINE:
Applications must be received by October 1. When October 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, applications will be
due on the first business day of the month.

Please describe the following in as much detail as possible within the space provided:

• Student Learning Objectives

Using a brainstorming activity make charts and webs of ideas and sequences of stories, and literature
discussed in class.

• Methods of Instruction (What do you intend to do in your classroom with your students?)

Use computers, and (or) notebooks and a chart software to help students learn to plot and create web
flow charts of stories, both fiction and non-fiction. Students will also use these flow charts to create their
own stories, and help them write papers, or short stories. This enables creativity and teaches the students
to be prepared and have planning skills.
• Project Timeline (What activities happen and when?)

First students will learn about the project and the upcoming technologies that will be brought in the
classroom. I will teach them how to use the software and the proper way of plotting. I will demonstrate the
flow charts through an example in a combination of two classes. After reading the first short story students
will create their first flow chart of the plot, create another flow chart of main ideas, create a flow chart of
characters, and finally a flow chart of their likes and dislikes about the story. After “all” students have
mastered the short story flow charts we will then move on to a short novel. After having class readings
and homework readings students will come to class and use the technology to create many flow charts
based on the novel. Once students have completed the novel assignment, they will then create flow
charts of their own short story. They will finally write the short story and have a group of classmates
analyze the story and create their flow charts based on the readings.

• Method of Evaluation

I will evaluate students as they are reading, taking notes, and finally making their flow charts on the
computer software. As long as the students understand how to use the technology, how to make flow
charts, plan and organize ideas, my main goal has been accomplished. My second goal for the
students is be able to create the flow chart in an organized fashion before writing a paper. I will grade
students on their pre-paper flow charts and on their actual paper as well. Students will then be
graded how they create flow charts of other student’s short stories. There is a combination of
technology, organization, planning, writing, geometry, and reading contributed to this project! In the
standard course of study for an eighth grade classroom, the purpose is to have students create
written language through media/technology and creativity. I believe that my project meets the
NCSCOS in both of these ways. Not only does it meet the English and media/technology standard
course of study requirements but I within the flow chart making students will gain a better
understanding of geometry, shapes, and what works best in certain areas.

BUDGET
List items to be purchased and costs. Combine like items so that there are no more than six categories.

1. Smart Draw (Flow Chart) Free download

2. A Workshop for all sixth grade teachers
to learn the software and effective ways of $50.00
using it.
3. Notebooks for the classroom. Acer
Aspire ONE 751h-1153 - Atom - 11.6 " - 1 GB
Ram - 160 GB HDD ($279 x 3) I can only $837
purchase three but hopefully every student can
use it at some point.
4. Access to computer lab $0.0

Total Request (may not exceed $1,000) $887.00

Please summarize your project idea and explain how the materials listed in the budget above will be used.
My project will help students can an understanding of technology, reading, and writing, planning,
geometry and organizing all at once. This project involves students reading short stories and creating flow
chats in a creating and imaginative way in order to learn the main elements of literature such as main
idea, plot, and characters. The materials used above will help students learn to make flow charts by
drawing on computers. A computer lab is needed for students to make the flow charts all at once. I am
asking for three small laptop computers that students can use in class or after class to create flow charts
as needed. I will use the laptops as a reward system for students who behave and turn in all assignments
on time. Those students will be allowed to use the computer for flow charts. The notebooks being
purchased are a small version of a normal laptop and are only $279 a piece. They do not hold a lot of
memory but with students only using them for flow chart purposes, they will be efficient. I hope that my
project will help students learn how organize a paper and incorporate technology in their lives at an early
age.
