ABSTRACT

The main aim of this project is to design a shift conversion reactor that used for further
production of hydrogen in an ammonia plant. The reactor/s can be considered designing as an
adiabatic plug flow reactor in which production of hydrogen must be occurred. The reactor is
to be designed such that it will have the optimum, economic cost and catalyst amount. In
order to design the optimum reactor, the project will be started writing the energy balance for
adiabatic operation. Then, the rate law of the overall reaction is found out that is contributed
later in the design equation. Then, the effective pressures are selected as HTS and LTS 6 and
4, respectively. Production of hydrogen reaction is occurred with two catalysts which are
copper-zinc oxide and chromia-promoted iron oxide. The reaction is reversible and
calculations are taken account into with respect to given several equations given in the
project. After required calculations, the Microsoft Excel program is written and according to
this program, the optimum equilibrium conversion temperatures for HTS and LTS are
selected as 773 K and 553 K, respectively. After finding the total reactor volume, catalyst
weight is calculated and it is found as...

3. CONCLUSIONS

The purpose of this project was to design a shift conversion reactor, adiabatic plug reactors in
which production of hydrogen in an ammonia plant. In order to design the reactor,
hydrogenation reaction was occurred with two available catalysts and the calculations were
made in terms of these two catalyst reaction equations. From the energy balance calculation
equilibrium conversion vs temperature relation was determined. The steam to CO ratios at the
reactor inlet was considered as 4. Then the pressure effect on the system is checked and
selected as 6 atm for HTS and 4 atm for LTS. The two plug flow reactors with a single cooler
were preferred optimum design and catalysts that were used as chromia-promoted iron oxide
for HTS and copper-zinc oxide for LTS. By using energy balances and the related equations,
the Microsoft excell is written and from the program, the volume of the reactor is found as
.. By using the volume of the reactor, the catalyst weight is found as ..
