Professor John Hill presents Adam Smiths Happiness Project at
2:00pm this afternoon in the Function Room at Brush Hill.
Economics is sometimes called the dismal science, so it may seem
strange to claim that the entire corpus of writings of Adam Smith,
the father of capitalism, was one big happiness project. But that is precisely what Dugald
Stewart, his literary executor and first biographer, argued when he wrote about Smiths
comprehensive genius applied to the study of human nature in all its branches and his
ruling passion, of contributing to the happiness and the improvement of society. This lecture
examines the relationship of happiness and capitalism. What did Adam Smith think happiness
was? How did he relate happiness and his secret recipe for a wealthy nation? J ohn E. Hill is
the author of Revolutionary Values for a New Millennium: John Adams, Adam Smith and
Social Virtue (Lexington Books, 2000). In 2007, Lexington Books published a revised and
expanded second edition, Democracy, Equality and Justice: John Adams, Adam Smith, and
Political Economy. Curry College has recognized him as Person of the Year and for excellence
in academic advising. In addition Curry has given him two Faculty Achievement Awards, and
he has received a national award for advising. For 2007, Curry honored him by naming him
Curry Fellow, the first ever named. As Fellow, he continued his research on J ohn Adams and
especially on Adam Smith, taught a course each semester, made guest appearances in various
classes, and gave two public lectures. He contributes blogs to "The Public Humanist," a blog
project of the Massachusetts Foundations for the Humanities. He has presented papers in
Salzburg, Austria, and Assisi, Italy. In 2012, after teaching at Curry for 43 years, Curry granted
