CAT-O-EX

ON-EX
Efficient Deaeration for the Brewing Industry
Function Principle
The process basically consists of supplying gaseous hydrogen
to the water to be treated and catalytically splitting the hydro-
gen and the oxygen in the water into ions. Water is formed.
Process
The flow rate and the oxygen concentration of the water to be
treated are measured with a high accuracy. From the values
obtained the required quantity of H
2
is calculated and metred
into the line. The hydrogen is dissolved in a static mixer speci-
ally designed for this purpose. Finally, the water with the dis-
solved oxygen is led through a catalyst bed. It leaves the
system almost O
2
free.
In recent years the standards regarding product quality and
shelf life in the brewing and beverage industries have become
more and more stringent. Adecisive prerequisite to meeting
these requirements is the use of water with very low O
2
concentrations. Whereas just recently one was still content
with residual oxygen levels of 0.1 mg/l, today concentrations
below 0.05 mg/l are typical.
Conventional processes usually need much energy to satisfy
these stringent demands. With our CAT-O-EX system we take
a different path. This unique method is based on the catalytic
removal of the oxygen. The advantage is obvious: Booster or
vacuum pumps, heating or addition of CO
2
or N
2
are not
necessary. This way, the operating costs can be reduced by as
much as 80%.

CAT-O-EX system for the catalytic oxygen reduction of brewing water
Capacity: 250 hl/h
Residual oxygen concentration less than 0.01 mg/l
Features
Catalyst technology
Very low residual oxygen concentrations
Temperature independent operation
Benefits
Very low operating costs
Low noise and wear
Highest product quality
Oxygen reduction at a constantly high level
The liquid deaeration unit ON-EX is used to remove air from
production, brewing and beverage water. Deaeration is effec-
ted in single or multi-stage vacuum tanks, with or without
CO
2
gassing.
On request, N
2
can also be used.
The ON-EX system achieves residual oxygen concentrations
up to 0.05 mg/l.
Function Principle
The water is sprayed into the two-stage vacuum tank to
achieve optimum mass transfer between liquid and gas. The
necessary vacuum of 90-98% is usually produced by liquid
ring vacuum pumps.
For special applications, the combination of water ring vacu-
um pump and air jet injector has proven its worth.
With the use of CO
2
or N
2
as a stripping gas, the residual oxy-
gen concentrations can be considerably reduced.
