BOOMTOWN ESTERO
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
R
apid growth is back for Estero, and it will
likely never be referred to as a sleepy little
offshoot of Naples or Fort Myers again.
Estero is coming into its own as a relocation
destination.
As Walmart breaks ground and Hertz begins site work
on its corporate campus, homebuilders are preparing for
an inux of residents.
The U.S. Census Bureau recently rated Lee County
as the tenth-fastest growing metropolitan area in the
nation, and Estero is at the epicenter of that growth.
Estero recently made the Top Ten Florida Cities for
Homeownership, as assessed by NerdWallet.com for home
availability, affordability and population growth.
I think Estero, in general, has kind of become the hub of
everything, with shopping so close, the quality of life and
the university nearby, says Scott Mairn of Pulte Homes,
which opens sales for Corkscrew Shores this month. Its
becoming Main and Main from a livability standpoint.
Corkscrew Shores features resort-style amenities, with
a clubhouse, pool, tness center, miles of walking trails
and a 240-acre stocked lake for shing, paddling and
picnicking on the former Cemex mine property east of
Bella Terra. Model homes will be completed this month
for the community, which is planned for about 660 two-
to-ve-bedroom homes.
They wont be your cookie-cutter, Florida
Mediterranean homes, Mairn adds. Theres going to be
some different architectural styles intermixed.
Last year, new home permits in Estero hit 448, the
highest mark since 2006, with The Preserve at Corkscrew
leading the way. The Preserve, just west of Bella Terra,
is down to about 100 home sites left in the 441-home
community, which offers lake and preserve views,
reasonable monthly association dues and a top-of-the-line
tness center.
Theyve sold about 200 homes in the last 12 months,
reports Nick Cameratta, chief executive for developer
Cameratta Companies. Its exceeded our expectations.
Back in 2007-08, we felt that when the economy returned,
Estero would be one of the rst communities to come back,
and its turning out to be true. Esteros close to everything

you need for a great lifestyle.
As new corporations, residential communities
and retailers transform the local landscape, Esteros
demographics may be changing, too.
The Estero Council of Community Leaders is working
with urban planner Seth Harry to develop a vision for a
new Town Center north of the Hertz campus, which likely
will be the communitys rst mixed use development,
including ofces, retailers and multifamily residences, says
Director of Community Planning Roger Strelow.
Commercial development is going to attract younger
people and middle-aged adults who are still working,
he predicts. If they can live and work in the same
community, thats always a benet. For years, the main
market in Estero has been the retirees. I think that is
changing somewhat and we will be seeing our demand for
open communities with young families increasing.
Longtime Estero Realtor Joe Pavich, Sr., says his rm
is already seeing more young families and rst-time
homebuyers in the market. Hertz and FGCU basketball
have helped put Estero on the map, and people are
starting to relocate with Estero in mind as the destination.
The nation has nally found out where Estero is at, and
theyre coming here, Pavich says. Ive been selling real
estate in Estero since 1992, and this is what weve been
waiting for.
Joining the lineup of new communities is Estero Place,
a single-family community planned for 102 homes at the
corner of Corkscrew Road and Three Oaks Parkway. The
community will include an 11.5-acre preserve along the
Estero River tributary and have limited amenities, allowing
for low association dues.
Meanwhile, another Neal Communities project, Villa
Palmeras, is going strong down the street, across from the
Estero Fire Rescue station on Three Oaks Parkway. Villa

14 JUNE 2014 | ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM
Palmeras is designed for outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts,
with a nature boardwalk and direct access to the Three
Oaks Bike Path, a 30-mile trail extending from Naples
to Fort Myers.
The Brooks also is adding a new community. Pebble
Point at The Brooks is planned for 90 single-family
homes at Coconut Road and Three Oaks Parkway. It is
being built on what was once slated for a new interstate
exchange, but community protests prevailed in getting
this piece of land developed for residential use.
A condominium community, Mirasol, has started
selling just south of Coconut Point Mall, and a senior
living facility is planned for Via Coconut near the Bonita
Community Health Center. Apartments may be going
in near the interstate by the Embassy Suites hotel. A
preliminary plan for the Estero Interstate Commerce
Park includes 136 apartments in 17 two-story buildings.
This cuts a new swatch into our pattern for
development, and our thinking is there probably will be
more multifamily units coming, as well as single family
homes, Strelow says.
As Estero grows, new restaurants and retailers also
are moving into the area. The barren land opposite
Coconut Point Mall on U.S. 41 will nally begin to ll as
Coconut Trace takes shape. Two restaurants are slated
to open there, Pollo Tropical and First Watch.
Estero planners take pride as the community becomes
a desired destination. The Village with a Vision has a
unique community feel, thanks to careful planning and
plenty of citizen input, says Jack Lienesch, chairman of
the Estero Community Planning Panel.
Estero benets from the most stringent architectural
and landscaping standards in Southwest Florida,
Lienesch says. You know youre in Estero without
seeing any boundaries. You can tell by distinctive, upscale
architecture and feel, attractive signs and landscaping.

DISCOVERING
MOUND KEY
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
DINING FEATURE
F
rom the water, Mound Key looks like any other
mangrove island in Estero Bay, yet hidden
within the native vegetation is a little known
piece of national history, with a 31-foot-high
mound of shell and sh bones at the core.
I recently joined archaeologist Theresa Schober on
a boat tour to this historic island to learn more about
the Calusa Indians who dwelt there for hundreds of
years before an unwelcome visit from a famed Spanish
conquistador named Juan Ponce de Len in 1513.
As Schober aims to prove in a documentary she is
producing, Mound Key is where the new and old worlds
collided.
The excursion launched from the West Bay dock on a
clear Monday morning, with a group of 28 aboard Capt.
JR Treppers Banana Bay Tour Company vessel. As we
boarded, the gregarious archaeologist welcomed her
guests including one couple who traveled 600 miles
from South Carolina to hear Schober tell of Calusa Indian
culture while standing on the very shell mounds these
natives constructed.
We watched waterfowl and waived to kayakers as we
cruised our way through the mangroves on a course for
Mound Key. When we arrived, Schober set the stage for
our trek around this 125-acre island built of shell.
Everywhere your feet are dry, we will thank the
Calusa, Schober said. And since the Calusa believed two
of their three souls were passed on to smaller animals after
death, she added, If youre bit by a mosquito, thats just
the Calusa saying hello.
The native vegetation includes wild cotton, cactus and
agave plants. The Calusa would dry the strands inside
the agave to make a long, thin rope, then attach it to the

natural needle of the plants pointed tip for sewing,
Schober explained.
Although there is no written record from the Calusa
capital which the natives called Stababa it is named
on the 1514 Freducci Map, documenting Ponce de
Lens earliest voyage to Florida. During the last two
decades, Schober and others have conducted small-scale
excavations at Mound Key. A team from the University
of Florida, funded by National Geographic, returns this
summer to nish ground-penetrating radar to image the
subsurface.
This part of Florida is still a little bit of a frontier
for archaeology, says an enthusiastic Schober, who has
been exploring Calusa territory since 1998. What we
leave behind doesnt lie.
Ponce de Len rst sighted land somewhere on the
East coast traditionally St. Augustine 500 years ago.
He continued sailing along the coastline, coming into the
Calusa territory of Southwest Florida in May. On June
4, his men killed some of the natives and took hostages
at the Isla de la Matanza, or Island of the Slaughter,
which may have been Matanzas Pass near present-day
Fort Myers Beach, Schober said.
With her detailed descriptions, she paints a picture of
Ponce de Len overwhelmed by a Calusa counterattack,
which the Spanish explorer reported as involving 80 war
canoes (carrying 800 to 1,600 ghting men). Although
Schober thinks he may have exaggerated, the attack was
enough to keep him away for eight years, killing a third
of his men.
At that time, Mound Key was the thriving capital of the
Calusa nation the largest group of aboriginal people,
extending up to Charlotte Harbor housing a village of
about 1,000 people, according to Schobers estimates.
As we hiked up the steep incline, Schober explained
the hierarchal society of the Calusa, with the chief, high
priest and members of the ruling class undoubtedly
occupying the tall mounds while the commoners were
sherfolk, living near the waters edge.
The four documents which tell historians the most
about Mound Key are the accounts of Ponce de Lens
voyages; a biography from Pedro Menendez de Aviles,
who established a Spanish outpost in 1566; letters
from Jesuit Father Juan Rogel who operated the rst
mission at Mound Key; and the memoir of Hernando
de Escalante Fontaneda, a Spanish teenager who was
shipwrecked and taken captive by the Calusa. The Calusa
later brought Fontaneda along to greet Menendez, as a
translator to make an alliance.
The resulting oyster feast is the rst documented meal
shared between Europeans and an indigenous people,
occurring long before the pilgrims 1621 feast with the
natives at Plymouth Rock.
One memoir Schober would love to read if it existed
would be from Doa Antonia, the Christian name given
to Chief Carlos sister, whom he gifted to Menendez as a
bride to cement the alliance.
Doa Antonia was one of the rst Calusa to be
baptized, and she was a quick study in Spanish, Schober
explained. The archaeologist suspects Doa was used
as a liaison, or spy, by both the Calusa and the Spanish
during the short-lived peace before Spanish soldiers
killed Chief Carlos and his successor for refusing to

convert.
As we reached the top of Mound One the highest
point in Lee County apart from the county dump a
refreshing breeze greeted us, along with a gopher
tortoise who didnt take much notice of the strange
visitors to this normally quiet island, weaving his way
through the dusty path.
We also sighted a well constructed by the Koreshans
in the early 1900s, along with the unnatural presence
of fenced-in goats. Descendants of the pioneer Hanson
family still own a 9.6-acre parcel of Mound Key, the
only landowners unwilling to sell to the state in the
1990s. Theyve since tried selling through Lee Countys
Conservation 2020 program, but so far, the county and
the owner have not been able to come to terms on price.
They have been stewards of this property for 100
years, Schober mused.
West Bay residents Jerry and Connie Hines marveled
at the little known history so close to home, along with
fellow trekker Shelley Young of Bonita Springs.
There really is a lot more history here than I wouldve
known, she said, making her way back to the boat.
Theresa paints a vivid picture.
Schober is hoping to thrust Mound Key into the
national spotlight through a documentary sponsored
by the College of Life Foundation and the Friends of
Koreshan State Historic Site. Shes received a grant
from the Florida Humanities Council and hopes to air
the documentary on PBS by early 2015.
Boat trips to Mound Key will resume in the fall, and
they ll up fast. To reserve a spot, contact Schober at
MakingHistoryMemorable@gmail.com. Without a guide,
its little more than another mangrove island, but with
Schober, the age-old shells beneath your feet tell a story
of culture, conquest and a connection to people of the
past.

ISLAND VIEW RESTAURANT
Fine dining by the beach at Lani Kai Resort
BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS GATES
A
s the long days of summer beckon a trip
to the beach, dont just think of packing
sunscreen and ip-ops. Locals can now
enjoy a spectacular sunset and ne dinner
at the Lani Kai Island Resort.
This Fort Myers Beach resort has long been known
as the party place for nightlife and spring breakers, as
well as a place to grab a casual bite to eat while at the
beach. Recently, however, the owner has added class to
the resorts top-oor dining options, with the opening of
the new Island View Restaurant.
Bob Conidaris and his family wanted to give this beach
something it hasnt had before, which is an upper-scale
restaurant with good food at reasonable prices, says
Executive Chef Jason Smith-Agate.
He recently relocated from Chicago to run kitchen
operations at Island View, having grown up working in his
fathers three Italian restaurants: When I was eight or nine,
if I got in a ght with my brother, Id have to wash dishes.
Chef Jasons Italian background is evident in the
restaurants new design and menu, with most entres
cooked in an Italian wood-red oven. Hes sticking with
what he does best, incorporating fresh-caught, local sh
and seafood.
The restaurants tagline is: Mr. Seas Reel Raw Bar and
The Art of Wood Fired Cooking.
The only thing not updated in the restaurants $800,000
renovation was a mural painted by Conidaris late wife,
featuring Florida aquatic scenes and wildlife. Restaurant
guests dressed for an evening out will appreciate a
dedicated glass elevator to take them directly to the Island
View restaurant, avoiding the sand-laden elevators, which
go to the adjacent Sundeck Glider Lounge.
Other updates include a granite bar, bamboo oor,
natural plants and a small stage for live piano music and
entertainment. The all-new seating features high-top
tables and chairs, so guests get a better view of the sand,
water and sunset. A more private, curtained dining area
may be reserved for special occasions.
This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Lani Kai, and
Chef Jason commends Conidaris for his vision in creating
a casual ne dining experience with a breathtaking view.
Island View uses fresh ingredients, and every dish is made
from scratch, he adds.
It may be time to trade in those ip-ops for heels and
head to the beach this summer. Enjoy the view without
the heat at this quiet, air-conditioned restaurant at the
top of the Lani Kai.
