This brochure explains the various ways

in which the Seven can be supplied, from

the ever popular Classic to the world beating
Superlight R500. A unique aspect of Caterham
ownership is the ability to tailor-make your
vehicle to suit your specic needs. Please
take time to study the various options and
understand the special features. The Caterham
sales team are always available to guide you.
Caterham call their most popular
specication Component Build, which is a
system developed over 40 years to give the
maximum customer satisfaction. All difcult
and safety related parts are factory tted and
to help you, an assembly guide, build advice
telephone line and a post build inspection
service are provided free of charge.
Alternatively, the Seven is available fully built
by Caterhams technicians.
The Lotus Seven was rst raced by
GrahamHill in 1958 and the CaterhamSeven
continues as a road car, proven on the track.
The Seven is a part of motoring history and
I hope to welcome you to the world-wide
camaraderie of this unique British Sports Car.

Caterham Cars have been associated
with Lotus Cars, and the Seven in particular,
since 1959. The company became the sole
distributor for the Seven in 1967 and in
1973 bought the exclusive production rights
from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars.
Now in production for over 40 years, the
Seven has been the subject of continuous
development and improvement. It is a car
with timeless, classic appeal, yet technically
it is more than a match for todays
performance cars. Dynamically, it still
provides the standards by which other cars
are judged.
Major developments on the Seven over
the years have included the introduction of
double wishbone front and de Dion rear
suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, a six
speed close ratio gearbox, a torsionally
stiffer spaceframe chassis with honeycomb
panels for side-impact protection and
lead-free engines with catalytic convertors.
Weather protection, trim and seating have
also undergone constant development.
Sevens are available in a variety of
forms and specications to suit your motoring
requirements and budget. The range runs
from a complete set of components, for self
assembly, to a fully built product. The chassis
are designed around two specic power
units: the Vauxhall 1600 and a range of 16
valve Rover K-Series units.
However, the reintroduction of the
Classic Seven has brought the appeal of a
Caterham to a broader market. By retaining
the traditional suspension and providing a
reconditioned gearbox and live axle, the
Classic remains true to its roots of value and
performance.

Buying a car, particularly one like the
Seven, should be an enjoyable experience,
so we have compiled a list of commonly
asked questions to help you decide which
model will suit you best.
There are two ways to purchase a Seven:
Component
In this option the car is supplied in
kit form with a wired and plumbed chassis;
with bodywork, windscreen, fuel tank, pedals
and instruments already installed. All other
parts are supplied and sorted ready for
assembly and building time is typically
around 70 hours. Each kit is supplied with
an illustrated assembly guide and a technical
help line is available should you encounter
any problems.
Fully Built
With the fully built option the vehicle is
completed and tested at the Factory. The car
is SVA approved, registered and requires
only the customers road tax and insurance to
drive away.
A Caterham is no ordinary car, and
represents the peak of driving involvement,
offering a sophisticated package of handling,
roadholding and ride.
We would strongly advise that anyone
new to performance motoring should take
advantage of a high-performance driving
course, which can be arranged directly through
our Sales Ofce. We believe this will enhance
your enjoyment of owning a Caterham.
If you would like to know more please
ask one of our experienced staff at the
Caterham Sales Ofce on 07000 000077.

Q1. When buying my Seven, can I
choose between a kit and a fully
built car?
A1. Absolutely. We offer all our models in
either Component or Fully Built guise,
depending on your particular requirements.
Please refer to page two for details.
In addition, Caterham stock the largest
number of quality used Sevens in the world.
Purchasing direct from Caterham, assures
you of buying only the highest quality
pre-owned Sevens on the market.
Q2. What is the difference between
the Live axle and de Dion versions?
A2. The Live Axle utilises the traditional
Seven rear suspension conguration providing
a simple low cost lay-out.
The de Dion rear axle is a more advanced
design offering better handling and comfort.
The new model range offers a 40% increase
in chassis stiffness and technically superior
front suspension with revised geometry. The
de Dion cars have a twin wishbone front
suspension as standard.
Q3. What engine options are available?
A3. There are two basic types of engine
offered, with various power and tuning
options available on each.
a. Vauxhall 1600 This excellent 8-valve unit

three

please note: photographs may include options

is tted to the Classic range and produces
100bhp in standard form. In addition we
now offer a 1.8 Supersprint tuning package
that increases power to 120bhp.
b. Rover K-series This all-British fuel injected
16-valve engine is available as both a 1.6
and 1.8 litre unit, with various tuning
packages available throughout the range.
The all-aluminium design provides a
lightweight, perfectly balanced package for
the de Dion chassis. Power ranges from
115bhp to 230bhp.
Q4. Should I have a ve or six speed
gearbox?
A4. Most models come with the ve speed
gearbox as standard, but should you require
the ultimate close ratio gearing, our in-house
six speed unit will provide maximum possible
performance.
Q5. Can my car be registered with a
current number plate?
A5. All de Dion cars are constructed entirely
using brand new components and as such
warrant a current pre-x. The Classic range
comes tted with a reconditioned ve speed
gearbox and live rear axle as standard,
thus requiring a Q prex when registered.
We can offer customers the choice of
purchasing a new ve speed gearbox which
along with the six speed option would
guarantee a current prex.
Q6. Are Caterhams easy to register?
A6. Fully built cars are just the same as buying
a new car from anyone else all the work is
done for you. All that remains for the customer
is to purchase the road tax prior to collection
of the vehicle. For home built cars the owner
must submit his car for an SVA inspection.
Q7. Can you arrange nance?
A7. Yes. We have a variety of options for
you to consider (see p17 for further details).
Q8. Are Caterhams easy to insure?
A8. Yes. We have a scheme which is designed
specically for Caterhams (see p17 for further
details).
Q9. Can I have a test drive?
A9. By prior appointment with our sales
staff we will be happy to take customers for
a demonstration drive. If you want a more
hands on experience we have a number of
other schemes available, including
Rent-a-Seven, Autotesting and Track days
(see p16 for further details).
Q 10. How can I order a Seven and
what is the delivery cost and time?
A 10. Ordering is very simple, requiring
completion of the form enclosed with this
brochure and payment of a deposit. A few
weeks later we conrm the order, and
request a second deposit. The balance will
be required on or before delivery. Your car
will be delivered anywhere in the UK at a
competitive rate. Please enquire for delivery
prices and current lead times but plan
around 3-6 months for delivery.

The Caterham Vauxhall Classic represents
one of the best value sports cars on the market.
The traditional appeal of our live axle design
has not diminished with time, offering a light-
weight package with outstanding performance.
Like all our models, the Classic has never
rested on its laurels and has always been
subject to ongoing development, with
all aspects of the car designed to ensure the
benets of modern engineering. The 1.6
Vauxhall unit produces 100bhp fromits 8-valve
SOHC design running on twin Weber 40
DCOE carburettors. With a healthy 107 lbft
of torque the performance of the 1.6 Classic
is impressive, but for those customers wanting
a little extra, we are now able to offer our
unique 1.8 Supersport tuning package that
increases power to 120bhp with torque rated
at 122 lbft.
The Classic can accomodate either of our
ve or six speed gearbox options. The
standard ve speed along with the live rear
axle are supplied as reconditioned units,
which means that this model is registered onto
a Q prex. As an alternative, customers can
purchase a new ve speed gearbox, which
along with the six speed option would provide
a current prex when the vehicle is registered.
Standard equipment on the Classic
range includes full dashboard instrumentation,
aeroscreens, cloth adjustable seats, carpets,
4 into 1 competition exhaust, boot cover,
alloy wheels, rollbar, seatbelts and aluminium
bellhousing and sump.

A new addition to the K-Series range is
the higher capacity 1.8 unit. Similar to the
1.6 in specication, the 1.8 retains all the
lightweight virtues of its smaller brother,
whilst providing increased torque and a
more relaxed power delivery. This model
would ideally suit those wishing to retain
high performance with the ability for longer
distance cruising. Like the 1.6, this unit
can be supplied in both standard and

SPECIFICATIONS VVC
The Caterham Seven VVC represents the
latest in cutting edge engine technology and
provides the usual high levels of Caterham
performance combined with greater levels of
renement.
An evolution of the 1.8 K-Series engine,
the Variable Valve Control unit provides
effortless performance. Hydraulic valve
control brings torque at the bottom end of the
rev range without sacricing top end power.
The VVC will give 150bhp at 7,000 rpm
and 128 lbsft of torque at 4,500 rpm, and is
characterised by its ability to combine
a smooth high-revving power delivery with
greater levels of torque than the standard
1.8 unit. The result is ideal for enjoying the
high performance motoring expected in a
Caterham, matched with pulling power
normally reserved for bulkier cars.
The unique character of the VVC provides
a level of versatility beyond that encountered
in many sports cars. The exibility of the
engine makes for the perfect all-round Seven,
ideal for long distance motoring, short cross-
country blasts or the occasional track day. If
you need a Seven suitable for all occasions,
the VVC remains the perfect choice.

Motorsport has always been a big part
of the Caterham philosophy and over the
past 40 years of Seven production, owners
have consistently turned to the track in order
to exploit the full potential of their cars. The
Caterham 7 has always been unique in its
ability to combine the attributes of a racing
car with the manners and exibility of a road
going vehicle. Today, just as in years gone
by, competitors still enjoy the ability to drive
their Seven to the circuits, race the car, drive
it home again and very probably on the
same set of tyres and with a minimum of fuss.
Caterham have been organising and
supporting various Championships since 1986.
In the UK, there are now literally hundreds of
Caterham 7s competing in a variety of
motorsport disciplines, with many more
racing all over Europe, Japan and the United
States. The Factory backed championships
run in the UK are supported in numerous
ways, ranging from a discounted parts supply,
race day driver hospitality, full administration
back up and a friendly, active social scene.
The Championships
There are currently four separate
Caterham supported championships, each
one involving a completely different vehicle
specication, adhering to a separate set of
regulations. Outlined below is a brief
description of each.
The Caterham Academy
Having rst appeared in 1995, the
Championship was created to introduce total

factor in providing close racing is that all the
cars must be genuine ex-Championship cars,
or new Academy specication Sevens purchased
direct from the factory. The 2000 season
consists of two hillclimbs and nine circuit races,
whilst for the technical specication all interested
parties should consult the Championship literature.
The Caterham Roadsport
Championship
The Rover K-Series engine was introduced
into Caterham racing back in 1992 and soon
established itself as the most popular of all
Caterhamformula. The cars originally appeared
as 1.4 ltr 110bhp units but were quickly
upgraded to 130bhp Supersport units. 1998
saw an all new Championship introduced,
utilising the latest specication 1.6 lt, 133bhp
units complete with Caterhams own close
ratio six speed gearbox. This formula has
proved to be both fast and competitive and
will continue with the same structure for 2000.
The K-Series championship attracts
competitors of all abilities and levels
of experience. Beyond the Scholarship, this
championship can provide the perfect platform
upon which to build a career in motorsport
and with full grids at every round, close
competitive racing is guaranteed.
As with all Caterham backed
Championships, the major mechanical
components are sealed to provide close
competition and to keep running costs to a
minimum. The entire technical specication is
set out in strict regulations, which are then
carefully monitored throughout the season by
the Championship scrutineers.
The Caterham Superlight R Challenge
The Caterham Superlight Challenge
provides the ultimate Seven Championship in
terms of speed and exhilaration. This formula
provides straight-line performance on a par
with many single seat formulas, and a huge
level of grip provided by the Avon slick
racing tyres. Weight is kept to a minimumby
the exclusion of unnecessary road going
equipment such as lights and dashboard
instrumentation.
1998 saw the introduction of a new 1.8 ltr
K-Series race unit into the series, providing
190bhp from its dry-sumped all aluminium
design. Running in conjunction with Caterhams
own 6 speed gearbox, this high-technology
race engine has provided performance and
handling beyond that of the previous Vauxhall
engined racers.
Like the K-Series championship, the
Caterham Superlight R Challenge enjoys
healthy grids with fast, competitive racing.
This championship is aimed at the
experienced competitor providing the
ultimate thrill to those drivers with more
condence and greater ability on the track.
novices to the world of motorsport. Available
to 50 competitors every year, the championship
offers a complete package with fully sponsored
cars at a subsidised all inclusive price. The
package includes: Caterham 1.6 Vx Sport,
Full ARDS tuition for National B licence,
Medical examination to enable RAC licence,
Club membership, Entry fees, Kart race, Test
Day with instruction, 3 Hillclimbs, 3 Sprints &
2 Circuit races.
The Academy is designed to introduce
drivers to a range of Motorsport disciplines
and to encourage drivers to continue with
motorsport in years to come. As such, this
championship attracts competitors from all
walks of life, male and female and of all ages
with a particular emphasis on developing a
strong social bond between competitors.
The Caterham Graduate Series
Created in 1997 to provide a natural
progression for ex-Academy competitors, this
series is based on a similar formula
consisting of speed events and circuit races.
Ideally suited to novices, drivers may or may
not have previously taken part within the
Academy, whilst the vehicle itself should not
deviate fromthe strict Academy specication.
Open to any competition license holder, the
Graduate Series provides a perfect stepping
stone to all those not wishing to get involved
in higher cost, higher prole championships.
The emphasis is on fun and all those involved
enjoy a friendly club atmosphere coupled
with close, competitive motorsport.
Like all Caterham Championships, the key

Autotests are a great way to show your
driving skills (or lack of them!) in a Caterham
7. With instructors on hand to help, you
will race against the clock, your friends,
colleagues and fellow competitors to nd out
who really has got the hang of it.
The Caterham Motorsport Club is open
to drivers and social members looking for a
great day out as well as offering the full
Caterham Experience for any corporate
entertainment need.
For further information ring the Caterham
Motorsport Club hotline on 07000 217721.
The Caterham Motorsport Club has been
set up to bring a taste of motorsport to
enthusiasts everywhere, Caterham owners
and non-owners alike. If you thought you
needed to be a racing driver to experience a
Grand Prix circuit or had to own a Caterham
to drive one on the track - think again!
Our intention is to provide members with
the complete track experience and to make
the opportunity available to drivers of any
type of car. Variety is a key element to the
success of our trackdays and the wider the
spectrum of vehicles present, the more
enjoyable the day. So whether you purchase
a Seven or not, regardless of what you may
drive, come along and enjoy the unique
excitement of a Caterham Motorsport Club
track day.
Track Days take place at all the major
circuits around the UK and allow participants
to explore the limits of their skill in their own
vehicle. With qualied instructors and
celebrity racers on hand to offer tips and
advice, drivers are soon able to hone their
skills and develop greater levels of track craft
and car control. As part of the day, Caterham
Cars staff will demonstrate why the Caterham
Seven has been unrivalled on the track for so
many years. In addition Caterhams own cars
can be made available to all participants
who would like to get behind the wheel
themselves. Just as you think its not possible
to go any faster, an experienced driver will
take you out for some demonstration laps in
one of the Clubs top of the range Sevens.
