EXT. WOODS - DAY
A peaceful day in the woods, until...
A GUNSHOT!
Bullets fly past a running girl and smash into a tree. The
girl is ALICE, 22, black hair and wide brown eyes, who
screams and drops to the ground.
ALICE
Oh, Lord...please help me.
A hissed whisper comes from the bushes to her left.
FRANK
Alice! Over here, quick!
Alice looks over to see her boyfriend FRANK, 31, skinny with
a tuft of facial hair on his chin, waving towards her. With
one scared look, Alice rolls over and hides behind a stack
of tyres just as a hail of bullets rains onto them.
ALICE
Im scared, Frank.
FRANK
(warmly)
Dont be, Im...
MAN (O/S)
Get out here, you cowards!
Frank peers around the side of the tyres, but retreats as a
shower of red clouds the area. Out in the clearing, DEVON,
30, a suave looking gentleman, stands holding his paintball
gun at his side.
FRANK
(yelling)
Im out of paint, Devon! Have been
for half an hour now!
WOMAN (O/S)
Thats not our problem, is it?
Lexi, 23, hot brunette with long legs, walks into the
clearing behind her boyfriend, gun at the ready.
LEXI (CONTD)
Now come out and meet your maker.
Frank leans against the tyres and sighs.
2.
FRANK
Well...theres only one thing for
it.
Frank hands his gun to Alice and begins to stand.
ALICE
No! Frank, dont!
FRANK
We arent losing to these clowns,
Alice.
With a wink, he stands up. In an instant, he is peppered
with a shower of paintballs. From Alices perspective, the
paint looks frighteningly like blood. He falls on top of the
pile, mock groaning in pain.
DEVON
You next, Alice.
LEXI
Throw your gun over and well go
easy on you.
DEVON
Maybe.
Devon and Lexi smile as Alice rises, holding Franks gun by
the wrong end out in front of her. She throws it at her feet
at puts her hands to her hips. Devon aims directly at her
chest.
DEVON (CONTD)
Any last words?
ALICE
Surprise.
Quick as a flash, Alice reaches behind her back and pulls
her gun out of her pants. She shoots Devon directly in the
forehead and he falls with a cry. Lexi struggles to get her
gun out of the holster but she is too late; Alice shoots her
straight in the chest and she falls to the ground. Frank
rises from the tyre stack and embraces Alice.
FRANK
Thats my girl!
Behind them, Devon and Lexi drag themselves up.
3.
DEVON
Why didnt you have your gun ready?
LEXI
Why didnt you just shoot her?
DEVON
Why didnt you...
FRANK
Guys, just chill. Good game.
Frank extends his hand, but Devon ignores it.
DEVON
Game, right. A stupid game. Either
way, thats your half over. Shall
we?
Devon begins to walk through the woods and the rest follow.
Lexi rubs her chest, moaning.
LEXI
Cant believe you shot me. Talk
about putting a strain on the
friendship.
ALICE
Its not my fault you were slow on
the trigger.
LEXI
Im jussayin...cowering behind
some tyres one minute, Terminator
the next? Sometimes youre harder
to reader than Dan Brown, girl.
Alice blushes, looking away. A hail of bullets flies past
the group and they jump back.
MAN
(yelling)
Hey!
A bald man with a mask over his face runs over and throws
his gun down at Devons feet. He removes his mask to reveal
a bright red face, sweat dripping down.
MAN (CONTD)
What the hell do you think youre
doing?
4.
DEVON
Walking?
MAN
Read the freakin signs...masks are
to be kept on at all times! Did you
know these paintballs travel at
speeds of up to 200 miles per hour?
DEVON
(feigning interest)
No way!
MAN
If one of these hit you in the
eyeball...itd fly right through
and spatter your brains all over
the field. Is that what you want?
Lexi pushes past the annoyed Devon.
LEXI
We are very sorry, sir...but do you
know who you are talking to?
MAN
The Queen of England? I dont
really...
LEXI
I own the place.
MAN
(eyebrow raised)
Youre Ms. Steadman?
LEXI
(laughing)
Nice try. Its Ms. Trotelli. And if
you want to keep your job, I
suggest you step away.
The man, defeated, picks up his gun and quickly hurries
away. Devon laughs and hugs Lexi.
ALICE
Ms. Trotelli?
LEXI
Third time Ive used that, third
time its worked. Men are idiots.
5.
DEVON
Hey!
LEXI
Most men.
Lexi and Devon kiss. As they approach the car, which is
clearly the worse for wear, a large cloud rolls over,
darknening the scene. Alice tries to get in the passengers
seat door, but it wont budge.
FRANK
Sorry, babe...youll have to crawl
over me.
Alice walks around the other side of the car. As she leans
down to get in, she looks into the side mirror and spots a
shadow slink back into the woods. She shakes her head and
moves to enter.
GIRL (O/S)
Fore!
Alice spins in time to see the paintball flying towards her.
She ducks, and just avoids it. It hits the inside of the
passenger window and splatters everywhere.
DEVON
Ugh...really?
GIRL (O/S)
Sorry!
The four all shake themselves off as Frank starts the car.
FRANK (CONTD)
(awkwardly)
So...where to now?
CUT TO --
EXT. CITY STREETS - NIGHT
Alice and Frank walk along the side of a busy road. They are
very dressed up. Frank awkwardly tugs at the jacket sleeve,
which is clearly too small.
FRANK (CONTD)
Aw...havent worn this thing since
College.
6.
ALICE
(giggling)
You look great. Very...grown up.
FRANK
How you talked me into this, Ill
never know.
ALICE
You know the deal with double
dates...we choose one thing, they
choose the other.
The two arrive at the restaurant, Le Cafe Miro 81. It is
obviously very high end. Through the glass windows, Devon
and Lexi can be seen. Devon is glancing at his watch
impatiently.
FRANK
Good Lord, will you look at this
place? Looks like a fucking...
ALICE
(scolding)
Frank!
FRANK
Oh. Pardon my French. This would be
the place to use it, though.
ALICE
I meant the blasphemy.
FRANK
Alice, if God was watching, he
wouldnt have dragged me to such a
horrible place.
Alice pouts, clearly unhappy.
ALICE
Frank, you said you would...oh,
youve still got some paint on you.
Here...
Alice leans over Frank and uses her finger to wipe away some
red paint from his ear. When she pulls her finger away, she
is surprised to see there is no paint on her finger.
FRANK
Did I have red on me?
7.
ALICE
Come on, Shaun.
Alice walks into the restaurant, and Frank reluctantly
follows. As they approach the table, Lexi stands and hugs
the two. Devon remains seated, arms folded.
LEXI
You made it!
DEVON
(muttering)
...eventually.
LEXI
Pretty nice, huh? It was so hard to
get a reservation.
DEVON
It helps that I know a guy. Whats
that old saying...
FRANK
"Fingers in pies"? "Its not who
you know, its who you..."
DEVON
(coughing)
Thank you, Frank. Quid pro quo. The
owner gets me a table, I work his
finances for the quarter.
LEXI
Devon is an investment banker. The
youngest at his firm.
Devon laughs; perhaps louder than necessary.
DEVON
Darling...Im sure Frank and Alice
dont want to hear about all my
financial successes...
Alice glances over at the table next to them, where a waiter
is cutting into a piece of meat aggressively with a large
cleaver.
DEVON (CONTD)
...so what do you do, Frank?
FRANK
Oh. Im an architect, actually.
Into my graphic designing and stuff
online.
8.
Devon raises his eyebrows; he actually seems impressed.
ALICE
Tell him about the project, Frank.
FRANK
I got commissioned to work on the
new hospital downtown.
LEXI
Oh, Ive driven past that. Its
huge!
FRANK
My biggest project yet. The start
of big things, hopefully.
DEVON
Waiter!
The waiter shuffles over to the table.
DEVON (CONTD)
Ill have two glasses of the
Chateau Saint Michelle Riesling.
WAITER
And for you, madame and monsieur?
FRANK
Um...a beer would be great, thanks.
WAITER
A...beer...very well.
ALICE
Make that two.
Frank flashes Alice a thankful grin as the waiter shuffles
off. As he does, Alice catches a glimpse of a plate of
sizzling meat being placed down on the table next to them.
The hot fat spits and sizzles, making her look away.
ALICE (CONTD)
So...where did you two meet?
DEVON
Was about to ask you the same
thing...at his retirement home?
Devon laughs and looks at Lexi, who gives a courtesy
chuckle. Frank and Alice look down at the table.
9.
DEVON (CONTD)
Because of the age difference!
LEXI
I got it.
FRANK
(cold)
She asked first.
DEVON
What can I say, she fell for me as
soon as she saw me.
LEXI
My friend got me into this
exclusive party in the city.
Cocktail dresses, champagne, the
whole Shiraz. Anyway, one of my
exs was there, so I basically
grabbed onto the first guy who
walked past and asked him to
pretend to be there with me.
DEVON
Moi.
Behind Alice, a champagne bottle is opened and the cork
makes a loud noise, making her jump.
LEXI
So he obviously decided he liked
what he saw, because he...
Alice spots a man biting into a piece of meat, a bit of
blood running down his chin...
LEXI (CONTD)
(getting fainter)
...diamond ring, right there on my
desk! I couldnt believe...
The room begins to swirl a little as Alice looks at birthday
cake, candles blazing, being carried away by a waiter. His
face seems lit up by the flames. She stands hurriedly.
FRANK
Hey, you OK?
ALICE
I...just...excuse me.
Alice stumbles away from the table, rushing towards the
toilets. Frank stands and begins to follow.
10.
FRANK
Straight to her head!
Franks rushes up to Alice and grabs her arm gently, leading
her into the disabled toilet.
FRANK (CONTD)
Alice...whats wrong?
ALICE
I...I dont know. I just feel
really weird.
FRANK
Its this place...its him. Did you
see the look on his face when I
told him I was an architect? Must
have figured I was a bum or
something.
Frank slides down and sits next to Alice, who seems to be
recovering.
FRANK
We will have to tell people how we
met soon, you know.
ALICE
Its none of their business, Frank.
Instinctively, Frank takes out a joint and lights it.
ALICE (CONTD)
What are you doing?
FRANK
(admonishing)
Oh, shit! I didnt even realise...
ALICE
Why do you have that here? I
thought you were clean!
Frank is about to answer when the door flies open, and a
waiter pushing a wheel-chair bound customer stands at the
door. The waiter appears to be leaving when his eyes find
the joint, and he looks angrily at the two.
FRANK
Whoops.
CUT TO --
EXT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT
11.
The group stand outside as the waiter slams the door of the
restaurant. Devon turns around, angry.
DEVON
What the hell!?
FRANK
Im sorry, man. I didnt think.
DEVON
Half of my clients were probably
eating there tonight!
LEXI
Calm down, Dev. Shit happens.
DEVON
Shit happens? Jesus, youd think a
person could show the slightest bit
of common...
Devon looks at Lexi, her steely gaze stopping him
midsentence.
DEVON (CONTD)
...it happens, I guess.
Whatever...well see you next time.
Lexi smiles apologetically and grabs Devon by the arm. They
turn to leave, when...
FRANK
Hey, wait! Let me make it up to
you; Ill buy you a drink or ten.
DEVON
I dunno...
LEXI
Sounds good to me!
FRANK
Sweet. And I know the perfect
place, only a few blocks away.
DEVON
Lex, I think we...
LEXI
Come on, babe. Just a few drinks.
Whats the worst that could happen?
CUT TO --
12.
EXT. TALL BUILDING
The four, each pair hand in hand, stand in front of a tall
building. Aside from the occasional person walking in or out
the front swivel door, it appears empty.
LEXI (CONTD)
This is your idea of a good night?
FRANK
Youll see. Follow me.
CUT TO --
INT. TALL BUILDING
LEXI
(puffing)
Would it have been so hard to put
an elevator in this bloody place?
ALICE
Dont tell me youve put on a few
since I last saw you!
LEXI
No, bitch! Im not Supergirl...but
damn...these stairs are gonna kill
me.
FRANK
Elevators can kill too, you know!
DEVON
Hardy-ha. Are we ever going to get
there?
FRANK
Ask, and ye shall receive.
The four finally make it to the very top floor. A large man
is standing outside a plain looking door, arms folded. He
smiles when he spots Frank.
BOUNCER
Hey, Frankie! Here to see your boy?
FRANK
Just a last minute change in plans.
Have they not been yet?
13.
BOUNCER
In about 5. Head in guys, on the
house.
FRANK
Thanks, Blake.
The group head into the room, and their jaws drop. There is
a huge wooden stage one side of the room, with a large glass
wall behind it, looking down onto the road. Onstage, a group
are performing a cover of Let The Bodies Hit The Floor. To
their left, a bar is serving drinks to many customers.
The barmaid is SONJA, 33, a beautiful Latina woman with dark
hair. One of the customers, swilling drink after drink, is
JOE, 42, a curly haired man with a beer belly. To his left
sits RICHARD, 35, a dwarf who is well dressed and politely
sipping his drink.
ALICE
Wow!
FRANK
Impressive, huh? The Rise...as
underground as they come. So to
speak. Go take a seat, Ill get the
drinks.
Frank begins to wander away, and Devon notices Richard.
DEVON
(softly)
Huh! Look at the freak at the bar!
Frank ignores Devon and walks to the bar, tapping Joe on the
shoulder. Joe and Richard smile and greet their friend.
Lexi, Devon and Alice find a table surrounded by bar stools
close to the stage.
JOE
Oh, look who it is! The ball and
chain let you out tonight, did she?
FRANK
(grinning)
Shes here too, you douche.
JOE
Fucked her yet?
Frank mock hits Joe, who laughs.
14.
JOE (CONTD)
(yelling)
Bar wench! More beer!
Sonja, busy, rolls her eyes.
RICHARD
I do apologise for him.
FRANK
Hes not yours to look after.
RICHARD
Someone certainly has to.
JOE
More beer!
Joe leans over the bar and tries to pour himself a drink out
of the tap. Sonja notices and runs up, annoyed.
SONJA
Cut it out! Cant you see Im
trying to do my job here?
JOE
(winking)
One of them.
Sonja walks away and serves another customer, annoyed.
FRANK
I didnt think you guys knew Spike
that well; he mainly works the
weekend shift.
RICHARD
Anything to support my fellow man.
Besides, I hear they arent bad.
FRANK
Spikes been trying to make it big
since High School.
JOE
No offence, Richie.
RICHARD
Why would I take offence to that?
The band finishes playing their song and the club roars in
approval. They salute the crowd and walk off stage, taking
most of their equipment with them. They are replaced by a
15.
group of 4; SPIKE, 29, a physically imposing bald man with a
nose-ring; GOOBER, 19, a pale and skinny brunette with dark
eye shadow; SKINNY, 32, a large black man dragging equipment
behind him; and PHAT, 26, a skinny white boy trying to do
the same.
SPIKE
Alright, you guys ready?
GOOBER
Shit yeah. Look at this crowd,
dude. The place is pumpin!
SKINNY
(exhausted)
Hey Spike, can you...
SPIKE
Quiet, Skin. Im getting my
headspace right!
PHAT
Isnt that your friend, man?
Phat, also exhausted, points towards the bar, where Frank
nonchantly waves to Spike.
SPIKE
Oh, yeah, man...I didnt think he
was gonna make it.
Spikes eyes fall on Alice, who is talking to Lexi.
SPIKE (CONTD)
Huh. Just had to bring her.
GOOBER
Whats wrong with her? Shes hot.
Phat and Skinny exchange winks.
PHAT
No, thats hot.
SPIKE
Ive barely seen him since hes
started dating that
goody-two-shoes.
GOOBER
(mocking)
Aww...poor Spikey. Want me to kiss
you on the vagina to make you feel
better?
16.
Goober grins and walks away, getting her beloved guitar
ready. It is custom made; red and silver, very dangerous.
SPIKE
Bitch. Set this shit up, will ya?
Amps all at the front tonight.
Were going all out.
Phat and Skinny begin to lug out huge amps and the rest of
the equipment onto the stage. The stage seems to lurch under
the immense weight.
Alice and Lexi are sitting alone at the table, an awkward
silence enveloping the two.
LEXI
So...what do you think of Devon?
ALICE
Oh...hes...great, Lex. He seems
really nice.
Lexi laughs, and looks at the stage.
LEXI
You havent changed since College.
ALICE
What do you mean?
LEXI
Tell me what you really think.
ALICE
I...uh...like I said, he seems
cool.
LEXI
Whatever. You and Frank seem to be
going well.
ALICE
Hes great. So sweet, gentle...
LEXI
(quietly)
Thats what you get when you
settle, I suppose.
Alice is about to interject when Frank and Devon reach the
table, green shots in each of their hands, which they lay on
the table.
17.
FRANK
OK...who is ready for the night to
begin?
ALICE
What are they, Frank!?
DEVON
La Fee Verte.
ALICE
Huh?
FRANK
Absinthe. The Green Fairy.
ALICE
Oh, no, Frank. Two beers is
normally my limit.
LEXI
I knew you hadnt changed.
Lexi grabs a shot and looks at Alice with a smirk. Alice,
determined, grabs one and meets her gaze.
ALICE
Fine.
LEXI
Fine. On three.
Devon and Frank grab their shots and hold them high.
DEVON
One.
FRANK
Two.
LEXI
Three.
Alice throws the liquid down her throat and coughs
instantly. Suddenly, the world falls black as she falls off
her barstool...
FLASH --
A dark bedroom in an unknown house. From the POV of the
person the bed, we sit up and...
CUT TO --
18.
INT. THE RISE
Alice, being held by Frank, suddenly sits up. She slowly
gets her bearings and can hear that Frank is yelling at her
over some very loud music.
FRANK
Alice? Alice!?
ALICE
Im...Im...help me...
Alice stands, with the help of Frank, and surveys the scene.
The band are playing on the stage, Spike screaming into a
microphone, Goober shredding her guitar, Phat and Skinny in
the background in front of the large glass wall.
Near the bar, Joe and Richard stand clapping. Sonja, behind
the bar, is too busy serving a customer to even look up.
On the packed dancefloor, Devon stands awkwardly as Lexi
dances with great enthusiasm right up the front. Alice looks
past her at the stage itself; for the first time, she
notices how worn and used it is. The whole wooden structure
seems to sway with each chord. The foundations seem to be
buckling, especially near the front of the stage.
ALICE (CONTD)
Its back, Frank.
FRANK
What? That rash?
ALICE
That feeling. We need to get Lexi.
Without waiting for Frank, Alice dashes into the mosh pit.
She fights her way through the heavy metal crowd, scared
look on her face. She reaches Lexi, who is now separated
from Devon, who is outside the mosh with Frank.
DEVON
She alright?
FRANK
I dunno.
Lexi looks up at Spike who smiles, and reaches down to lift
her onstage. Alice runs up and grabs Lexi by the leg.
ALICE
Lexi...wait!
19.
Lexi does not recognise the voice and lashes out, kicking
Alice in the nose and knocking her away.
LEXI
Let go of me, bitch! Woo!
Spike looks on with glee as Lexi, drunk, begins to bounce up
and down at the front of the stage. Alice, on the floor, can
see screws coming out of the stage foundations. Several
beams are closing to snapping. She is suddenly pulled up,
and she turns to see it is Frank, who begins to pull her to
the side of the stage.
FRANK
Come with me. Come on...
ALICE
No...look...
Cracks begin appearing in the stage, but nobody notices.
Alice screams at Frank, but standing in front of the huge
amp, no words can be made out. All of a sudden, the stage
seems to tear in two. The whole front section cracks and
begins to fall as the support beams give out. Lexi screams
and jumps off the stage, but Spike is not so lucky. His leg
slides directly into the crack and becomes stuck.
SPIKE
Ah, what the fuck!?
Phat and Skinny stop playing and rush to help, but they are
too late. The amps slide off the tilted stage toward Alice
and Frank. He knocks her out of the way and they both hit
the floor. The amp falls onto Frank, pinning his head to the
ground. He screams under the massive weight.
ALICE
(screaming)
Frank!
The crowd are now screaming, trying to get away from the
stage. The second amp falls, and the front part of the stage
flies back up. Firstly, Spike screams as his leg is
completely severed, and blood shoots all over the stage.
Goober slips and hits her head, falling to the stage floor.
Phat and Skinny fall down in front of the pyrotechnics,
which are now pointed directly at them. A spark flies, and
the flames shoot directly at them. In an instant, they are
alight and screaming. They jump off stage and run, causing
more panic.
20.
Alice looks up to see Sonja trying to put down a tray of
flaming shots in panic. Unfortunately, somebody bumps into
her, and sends the entire tray into Devon. He too catches
alive and runs screaming, spreading flames around the whole
club.
On stage, Goober awakens and looks up just in time to be hit
in the face by a falling light. She dies instantly, her
skull caved in. Spike, tears streaming down his face, moans
and continues to bleed out.
JOE
Need a hand?
Alice looks up to see Richard and Joe standing over her,
trying to shift the amp.
JOE (CONTD)
Put a little elbow grease into it!
RICHARD
Im trying, damn it!
Lexi, looking at the charred remains of Devon, Phat and
Spike, runs out of the club and begins down the stairs.
Behind the bar, Sonja grabs the fire extinguisher and starts
to battle the flames. Unfortunately, a large vodka bottle is
engulfed in flames right next to her and it explodes,
sending larges shards of glass into her body. She falls,
dead.
FRANK
Guys...its not budging...get out
of here.
The flames have fully engulfed the now empty club; all that
surrounds the group is flames and bodies. Joe spots what he
thinks is a pole, but in fact is a wire that has come loose.
JOE
Maybe this will...
RICHARD
No, you idiot!
Joe grabs the wires and is electricuted. He dies
immediately.
FRANK
Richard! Get out of here...and take
Alice!
21.
Richard looks at Frank with sorrow, but nods. He runs away,
but turns when he sees Alice isnt following.
RICHARD
Alice...come on! We have to leave!
ALICE
Just go! I cant leave him!
FRANK
Alice...
RICHARD
Alice, please...
Richard looks at the door...at safety...which is ever so
close.
RICHARD (CONTD)
...well die if you...
Before he can finish his sentence, the roof collapses and
crushes him alive. Alice screams and looks away.
On the stairs, the impact of the roof collapsing is enough
to trip Lexi up and send her flying down the stairs. She
lands with her face just in front of a broken bottle, shards
of glass poking right into her eyes.
LEXI
Holy shi...
Before she can finish her sentence, a panicked member of the
stampeding crowd step on the back of her head, sending her
skull directly into the glass. She lays awkwardly on the
stairs, dead, as the rest of the crowd trample over her.
Back in the club, the flames completely circle Alice and
Frank.
FRANK
Alice...you should have...
The frayed wires get hit by the flames. The amp shoots out a
huge piercing sound bit, and Frank screams. He dies, bloody
flowing thick and fast out of his ears. His eyes are open,
but completely dead.
ALICE
(horrified)
F...F...Frank?
The flames close in on Alice, who screams...
22.
FLASH --
A figure, sitting at a desk, writing...
CUT TO --
Alice opens her eyes to find that Frank is standing over
her. The band is playing, and Lexi is dancing close to the
front of the stage.
FRANK
Alice? Alice!?
Alice slowly gets to her feet. Looking at the stage, she
notices several screws popping out. At the bar, Sonja begins
to walk out with a tray of flaming shots.
ALICE
Were all going to die.
FRANK
Huh?
Alice pushes Frank away and scans the room. She spots a fire
alarm on the wall near the bar and runs, pulling it. The
room is suddenly extinguished with misty water and the alarm
blares. In an instant, the crowd are screaming, making their
way out of the bar.
Spike jumps off the stage and walks up to Alice, furious.
SPIKE
What the fuck is wrong with you?
FRANK
Calm down, Spike. She just...
ALICE
I...I saw something horrible!
JOE
Green Day? They were here last
week.
ALICE
No! Everybody died! The stage
collapsed, the waitress burned
Devon, and...
SPIKE
Your girlfriend is fucking crazy,
dude.
Frank reacts surprisingly badly to this, grabbing Spike.
23.
FRANK
Dont you ever call her crazy.
GOOBER
Shes just an attention whore.
The group look at Goober, standing on the stage with her
arms folded. Behind her, Phat and Skinny stand awkwardly.
ALICE
I swear, the stage, it...
GOOBER
The stage is fine! See!
Goober kicks the side of the stage hard. Quick as a flash,
the lights above the stage unbolt and swing down, narrowly
avoiding Goober. Phat and Skinny yell as the lights smash
into them, sending them flying through the glass wall and
screaming towards the ground below.
GOOBER (CONTD)
Whoops.
CUT TO --
EXT. BUILDING - NIGHT
Lexi holds Alice as they watch an ambulance drive away from
the scene, sirens blaring.
LEXI
So...what the fuck just happened?
ALICE
Its...I...
Frank exits the building and makes his way to the two.
FRANK
I had a quick look at the
stage...and Alice was right. That
thing was about as structurally
sound as Heather Mills. Any
pressure on the front of that old
thing and it all would have come
down.
DEVON
I knew it was a shit hole.
24.
ALICE
Frank, can we go home, please?
Frank nods and takes Alice by the arm.
FRANK
Well see you guys later, OK?
DEVON
Thanks for the great night,
Frank...
Devon walks away. Lexi smiles apologetically and follows.
Frank and Alice begin to walk away from the scene. Street
lights flicker ominously as the two make their way down the
dark street.
CUT TO --
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Frank lays back in his bed and sighs, tapping away on his
laptop. In the bathroom Alice stands in a bed robe brushing
her teeth. She looks down and sees a loose thread, and she
pulls it out with interest.
FRANK (O/S)
Coming to bed, honey?
ALICE
Give me a minute.
Alice tears the string out and throws it in the bin. She
leaves the bathroom and enters Franks room; it looks more
like a childs room, with Star Wars posters and toys strewn
around the place. She gets in bed, worried look on her face.
Frank closes his laptop and places it on the bedside table.
ALICE
Do you think Im crazy, Frank?
FRANK
Hey! No way!
ALICE
Its just...I know what I saw.
FRANK
You dont need to explain yourself
to me...I believe you.
Alice hesitates, sighing.
25.
ALICE
"For the Lord God does nothing
without revealing his secret to his
servants the prophets."
FRANK
Huh?
ALICE
What if Somebody was trying to warn
me about what was going to happen?
FRANK
What, like a Sign from God?
ALICE
I guess. But then why didnt he
save the other two?
FRANK
I dunno, babe. Maybe when your time
is up, your time is up.
Frank switches off the light. Alice rustles around in bed.
FRANK (CONTD)
Look, if youre really worried
about the others, we can see them
tomorrow.
ALICE
Id like that.
FRANK
Goodnight, beautiful
ALICE
Goodnight, Frank.
The two peck each other on the cheek and then close their
eyes. Alice opens hers, still worried.
CUT TO --
EXT. CAR - MORNING
Alice and Frank pull up outside a nice house in the suburbs.
Out the front, a man is busy lopping off branches with a
chainsaw. From outside, the sound of heavy metal can be
heard blaring from the house.
26.
FRANK
Well, this is definitely the place.
They get out of the car. The man with the chainsaw seems to
stop and stare at Alice as they walk past. They reach the
front door and knock loudly.
FRANK (CONTD)
(yelling)
Spike...Spike! You here?
He knocks again and the door swings open ominously. They
carefully enter, making their way through the house, which
is a mess. Things have been thrown everywhere.
FRANK (CONTD)
(concerned)
Buddy...you OK?
They reach the door from where the music seems to be coming
from. Frank throws the door open to find Spike and Goober in
a jam session with two guys, who seem surprised to see
visitors.
GOOBER
Great, look who it is.
SPIKE
Hey, Frank...and you...what are you
doing here?
FRANK
What am I doing? What are you...
Frank spies a lyrics sheet on the floor, and picks it up.
FRANK (CONTD)
(reading)
...the lights fell down...down from
the ceiling...you opened up...this
mortal feeling...flew through the
air...from the top storey...smashed
to the ground...an end so gory.
SPIKE
Uh...get us some beers would ya,
Goobs?
GOOBER
Get them your...
27.
SPIKE
Just do it.
Goober rolls her eyes and exits the room, guitar still
around her neck. She enters a cool room across the hall. She
takes off her guitar and places it down next to the door.
She grabs a six pack, but drops a beer, which smashes on the
floor.
GOOBER
Gah, damn it.
She moves to clean it up, but shrugs and leaves, slamming
the door shut. The beer winds its way towards an electrical
box, and a few sparks fly. The temperature gauge shows the
temperature dropping rapidly. As Goober walks back into the
living room, Frank and Spike are arguing.
FRANK
I cant believe you could be so
callous.
SPIKE
So what? Im making the most of a
shitty situation.
FRANK
They died last night! Walter and
Doug were your friends!
In the cool room, the strings on the guitar constrict as the
temperature continues to drop.
GOOBER
Who?
SPIKE
Phat and Skinny.
GOOBER
Oh. You should get you hand off it,
man. Some of the greatest songs of
all time have been about death.
American Pie...The Last
Song...Grandma Got Run Over By a
Reindeer.
FRANK
Most of those were written by
pros...and had class! This is crass
trash! Exactly why youre never
going to go anywhere.
28.
GOOBER
(angry)
Never going anywhere, huh?
Goober runs back to the cool room and grabs her guitar,
ignoring the cold. She stands in front of the group and
holds her axe close to her navel. She takes out her trusty
pick and grins.
GOOBER (CONTD)
Next time you see this face, Ill
be all over the TV.
Alice can see the strings shaking.
ALICE
(screaming)
Wait!
Goober swings her pick straight into the strings, which snap
on impact. The steel wires flash through the air, tearing
through Goobers throat.
SPIKE
Oh, shit...
Goobers hands fly to her throat, but it is in vain. Blood
begins to pour from in between her fingers at an alarming
rate. She drops to her knees, clawing at her throat.
GOOBER
(choking)
Help...me...
Before anyone can react, her head drops to the floor. Her
body lays, arched, over her guitar; blood spreading from
beneath her crippled form.
CUT TO --
EXT. SPIKES HOUSE - DAY
Frank and Alice look on as the police talk to Spike in his
front yard. A coroners van is parked outside as well.
FRANK
This is fucked.
ALICE
Frank.
29.
FRANK
Sorry. I think we should call the
others.
ALICE
And tell them what?
Frank takes out his phone and walks away.
ALICE (CONTD)
What arent you telling me, Frank?
Frank, avoiding the issue, dials a number and turns away.
Alice sighs and looks down at her shirt. Tugging the fabric
slightly, she clicks.
ALICE (CONTD)
...string?
Alice moves quietly through the yard and, after checking
that she was clear, moves into the house. Moving through the
tape, she enters the room where Goobers body is still on
the floor, covered with a sheet, blood seeping through the
fabric. With a sudden burst of courage, she lifts the sheet,
but then gasps and drops it again, stepping back in horror.
BLUDWORTH
Shes lucky.
Alice spins around to find that BLUDWORTH, a tall and broad
man with an evil smile, is standing behind her in a jacket
that reads CORONER on the back.
ALICE
Im sorry?
Bludworth steps over to the body and lifts the sheet. Alice
looks away, disgusted.
BLUDWORTH
The string severed her carotid
artery clean. She would have bled
out in seconds.
Bludworth clicks his fingers.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
Give me a quick death any day.
ALICE
You call this lucky? She
is...was...so young.
30.
BLUDWORTH
(amused)
As are you.
ALICE
What did you say?
Bludworth chuckles.
BLUDWORTH
Death doesnt discriminate. It
doesnt matter if you are young or
old, black or white, rich or poor.
Its the one thing that connects us
all.
ALICE
God is the one thing that connects
us all.
BLUDWORTH
God cant protect you from this. No
matter what you believe in...death
will get you.
Alice tugs at her jacket strings.
ALICE
But what if He tries to save you?
To warn you?
Bludworth stands up and examines Alice.
BLUDWORTH
There is no saving you, Alice.
Bludworth walks out, leaving Alice stunned. She turns to
leave, but bumps into a man in a similar jacket to
Bludworth.
ALICE
Oh, God! Sorry.
MAN
What are you doing in here, maam?
I havent checked the body yet.
Alice looks at the jacket and spots the CORONER writing.
She runs outside and looks around, but Bludworth is nowhere
to be seen. Frank walks up to her.
31.
FRANK
What were you doing in there?
ALICE
There was a man...did you see him?
He was wearing a coroners jacket,
and...
FRANK
Yeah, he just went inside.
Alice grabs Franks jacket.
ALICE
He knew my name, Frank! What is
happening to me?
Frank hugs Alice.
FRANK
Were going to figure it out, OK?
Frank leads Alice away. Behind the corner of the house,
Bludworth watches them drive away and smiles.
CUT TO --
EXT. FRANKS HOUSE - DAY
Alice and Frank pull up in the driveway to see that Devons
convertible is waiting for them. Lexi and Devon stand in
front of the house waiting. Next to the front lawn, a large
truck is parked, with WASTE-NO-MORE written on the side. A
huge pipe is protruding into the ground and a deep whirring
can be heard.
FRANK
(calling out)
How you doing, Matt?
Behind the wheel of the truck, a young man with a beard
awakens and smiles at Frank.
MATT
Hey, Frank. Just emptying the
septic, will be gone before you
know it.
FRANK
All good! Later.
Matt waves lazily and goes back to sleep. Frank and Alice
approach their friends.
32.
LEXI
Alice, are you OK?
Lexi hugs Alice, who looks taken aback.
LEXI (CONTD)
Frank called us...another accident?
DEVON
Sliced with a guitar, hey? Sounds
like a load of shit.
Frank ignores Devon and looks around.
FRANK
Are Rich and Joe not here yet?
LEXI
No...why? Whats this about, Frank?
FRANK
Ill show you.
Frank tries to open the front door, but the key sticks.
Devon looks at the house; it isnt much to look at, dingy
and paint peeling everywhere.
DEVON
Joy.
Frank managed to kick the door open and the group pile in,
making their way upstairs to Franks bedroom. The others sit
on the bed as Frank fires up his laptop on the desk.
FRANK
OK. Now, I dont want anybody to
freak out when I show you this, but
I think it helps to explain whats
going on.
Frank spins the laptop around, showing a site entitled
CHOOSE YOUR FATE: LIVE OR DIE?
DEVON
You know, Im actually a very busy
man, so...
FRANK
You may have less time than you
think. Read this...
Lexi steps forward, stooping over the screen. Frank avoids
looking at her cleavage with a grin.
33.
LEXI
Leslie Symonds, aspiring author, is
pleased to present the Death
Defying series...where you get to
go one-on-one with death and cheat
it forever...or fall victim to its
evil reach.
DEVON
And what does this have to do with
anything?
FRANK
Last night, before the lights
killed Phat and Skinny, Alice had a
vision. I picked her up off the
floor and she said we were all
going to die.
DEVON
So she had too much to drink. What
does that prove?
FRANK
Ive read some of Symonds work.
The premise is always the
same...somebody has a premonition,
they manage to save the people who
were meant to die, but then the
survivors start to die off one by
one.
ALICE
Like Phat, Skinny, and the girl...
FRANK
Exactly. What hes written is
coming true!
DEVON
This is ridiculous! Youre saying
we cheated death last night?
FRANK
Temporarily. We stole three deaths
from the Red God, and now they must
be repaid.
DEVON
What?
34.
FRANK
Sorry, Game of Thrones.
Frank, Alice and Lexi huddle around the computer as Devon
stands off at the back.
LEXI
So, what...he posts these books
online?
FRANK
Nah, normally just extracts. You
can buy them at a few small book
stores here and there. But its
been ages since hes published.
ALICE
Why?
Frank hesitates, and Lexi punches him.
FRANK
Ow!
LEXI
Why, Frank?
FRANK
Well...he got into a bit of hot
water a while ago.
Frank hesitates again.
LEXI
Come on, tell us!
FRANK
Leslie was a person of
interest after a series of deaths
a few years ago. He wrote about it
somewhere...here.
Frank clicks on a link, which shows a picture of a
racetrack.
ALICE
(reading)
I would like to apologise to fans
for my decision to recall copies of
my upcoming edition, Final Lap.
Any similarities between the events
that took place at McKinley
Speedway and those that occurred in
(MORE)
35.
ALICE (contd)
my proposed novel...which, may I
add, was written prior to the
tragic crash...were purely
coincidental. The police have since
cleared me and acknowledge that I
share no link with any of the
victims, nor was I in any way
responsible for their deaths.
FRANK
...and it goes on like that.
Basically, the premise was that a
guy has a vision...just like
Alice...at the speedway. He saves
them, yay! But they all die, one by
one, in horrible accidents.
DEVON
Can I have a look?
FRANK
Sure.
Devon walks up behind Frank and throws the laptop out the
window.
FRANK
Hey, my laptop!
DEVON
Youre scaring Lex. Stop filling
her head with this crap.
FRANK
Its not crap!
DEVON
Do you want me to tell you what
happened? Some dumbass architect,
not too dissimilar to yourself, did
a shitty job on a club that should
never have even been built. And it
cost two people their lives, which
sucks, but it happens! Then another
hick gets herself killed this
morning, so what? Accidents happen!
Thats why they are called
accidents!
FRANK
Three accidents in the space of a
few hours? This is real, Devon.
Youre in danger!
36.
DEVON
Im fine. Construction workers die
in accidents...toilet cleaners,
miners...these kind of people. I
dont.
Devon turns to leave the room.
ALICE
Where are you going?
DEVON
Cant a man go to the bathroom
without an interrogation? Where is
it?
Frank points outside his window; in the backyard, a shoddy
outhouse sits.
DEVON (CONTD)
Should have figured.
Devon leaves in a huff, and the three are left alone in the
bedroom.
LEXI
(quietly)
Do you really think this is
happening?
FRANK
I dont know. But I believe Alice.
And I think this Leslie guy knows
something.
ALICE
So what do we do?
Frank takes out a piece of paper and waggles it around.
FRANK
Managed to hack into his site and
find out his address. Its probably
time we pay him a visit.
CUT TO --
EXT. BACKYARD
Devon makes his way towards the outhouse, but steps in dog
poo. He looks down in disgust.
37.
DEVON
Disgusting.
He enters the outhouse and slams the door. He looks at the
dingy surroundings and cringes; unrolling the toilet paper,
he places it around the seat, pulls down his pants, and
carefully sits down. Looking to his left, a fake rubber
spider makes him jump.
DEVON (CONTD)
Jesus!
Devon takes out a cigarette and his prized lighter from his
pocket. He tries to light it...once, twice, thrice...but it
wont work.
DEVON (CONTD)
Come on...
CUT TO --
INT. TRUCK
Inside the truck, a snoring Matt leans against the horn,
which blares loudly. He wakes up with a start.
CUT TO --
INT. OUTHOUSE
Devon, startled by the horn, drops the lighter down the
toilet. Cursing, he looks down the bowl mournfully.
Wrinkling his nose, he gets on his knees and puts his hand
into the bowl, trying to find his lighter.
CUT TO --
EXT. TRUCK
Matt gets out of the truck and walks to check the hose. He
does not spot the laptop on the grass and slips on it,
locking the truck and dropping the keys down the drain.
MATT
Oh, man.
CUT TO --
INT. OUTHOUSE
Devons face darkens further as he tries to take his arm out
of the toilet, but it is stuck!
38.
DEVON
(yelling)
Fuck!
CUT TO --
EXT. TRUCK
Matt smacks the side of the truck in annoyance. A can of
coke falls off the dashboard, flipping a large red switch.
The truck begins to rumble, and Matt steps back.
MATT
Oh, shiiii...
CUT TO --
INT. PIPE
We follow the stream of poo as it runs back down the pipe,
bursting through the septic tank with immense pressure.
Somehow, the matter blocks most of the entering pipes,
meaning the whole stream gets focused towards...
CUT TO --
INT. OUTHOUSE
The toilet begins to shake, and Devon looks down into the
bowl, just in time to be hit by the tidal wave of poo and
refuse. He splutters and tries to scream as the onslaught
hits him full on, choking him on the disgusting content.
Just as it seems that he is about to pass out and die, the
stream ends. Devon looks around the outhouse. Everything is
covered in poo, including himself, as it drips down from the
walls and the ceiling. He wipes his eyes with his now free
arm, and spots his cigarette somehow untouched in his hand.
He also spots his lighter, grabbing it with disdain. He puts
his cigarette into his mouth and smirks.
DEVON
Heres to us.
Devon clicks the lighter, which ignites...the methane gas
enveloping the whole outhouse.
CUT TO --
INT. HOUSE
The massive explosion rocks the house. Lexi runs to the
window first in time to see pieces of wood, poo, and Devon
scattering around the whole yard. She screams, and Alice
grabs her from behind, looking outside in horror.
39.
LEXI
(screaming)
Devon!
CUT TO --
EXT. ROAD
Joe and Richard are driving in Joes sedan. Ahead of them,
they can see Matt banging on the outside of the truck.
JOE
Huh, look at this dude. Chillax,
bro!
BANG. The explosion rocks the sedan, and Joe swerves, just
missing Matt, and ends up on the front lawn of the house.
Pieces of poo hit the windshield, followed by Devons hand,
still clutching his beloved lighter.
Joe manages to get rid of the hand with his windscreen
wiper. Richard and Joe grab each other, screaming.
A few seconds pass when Alice and Frank run out the front of
the house, dragging an inconsolable Lexi behind them. Joe
winds down the window, panting.
RICHARD
Frank...I dont...what?
FRANK
Let us in, Joe. Weve got to get
out of here!
JOE
What happened? I didnt get invited
to Mexican last night.
The three pile into the backseat; Lexi wails at the poor
attempt at a joke.
FRANK
That was her boyfriend.
JOE
Oh. My bad.
Matt stands up, confused and dazed, next to the car.
MATT
Frank?
40.
FRANK
Step on it.
Joe hits the gas and the car flies off the lawn, back onto
the street. Lexi shakes in the backseat, Frank and Alice
holding onto her as tight as possible.
LEXI
No...no...no...
JOE
Is she alrigh...
FRANK
Just drive, Joe!
JOE
Im just asking if shes...
FRANK
(snapping)
Just drive, damn it!
Alice looks out of the back window, where she can see a haze
of waste settling down onto Franks front lawn.
LEXI
Alice...Alice?
She grabs her friends hand and squeezes.
ALICE
Hey...Im here. Youll be
OK...itll be OK.
LEXI
No...no it wont. Were dead. Were
all dead.
Alice looks at Frank, concerned.
FRANK
No...this guy can help, I swear it.
Alice?
ALICE
Yeah. He has to.
CUT TO --
EXT. HOUSE - DUSK
41.
Joe pulls up his car opposite a large and old house, dark
and eerie by nature. He turns off the engine and sits back,
sighing heavily.
JOE
This is heavy, dude.
RICHARD
Forgive me, Frank; but it seems a
little farfetched.
FRANK
I dont really care what you think,
I just want you safe.
JOE
And you think this dude can help?
ALICE
I have faith. Someone had better
stay here with Lex.
Lexi is sitting perfectly still in the backseat, a little
drool running down her cheek.
JOE
Want to play a game, Lexi? Its
called marry, fuck, kill...
RICHARD
(interjecting)
...Ill stay.
Frank, Alice and Joe exit the car and slowly make their way
towards the front door. Joe points out a chained up basement
door to the left side of the house.
JOE
Creepy, huh? Reckon hes got a
little Fritzl action going on?
ALICE
Sssh.
Frank walks to the front door and, after shrugging, knocks.
There is a wait, until slight footsteps can be heard. The
door slowly swings open, but the person can not be seen
behind the flywire door.
MAN
(softly)
Hello?
42.
FRANK
Hi...does Leslie Symonds live here?
MAN
Who wants to know?
FRANK
Im a big fan of your books, man,
and I just wanted to...
MAN
Not interested.
The man goes to close the door, but Alice steps forward
frantically.
ALICE
Please...my name is Alice Carroll,
and this is my boyfriend,
Frank...and this is my...this is
Joe.
JOE
sup, dude.
ALICE
What happens in your books...its
happening to us. Im scared,
and...we need your help.
The door opens slightly. We can now clearly see the man is
LESLIE, early to mid 20s, glasses and slight frame.
LESLIE
Happening to you? What do you mean?
ALICE
Could we please come in?
Leslie looks hesitant, but Alices pleading eyes win over.
He opens the door and lets the three in. Looking around, it
is a very unusual house.
FRANK
Interesting decor.
LESLIE
It was my parents house. Come
through.
Leslie guides the three into the living room, which is piled
high with papers and books. Leslie sits down in the one
available seat; the others stand around awkwardly.
43.
LESLIE (CONTD)
So?
ALICE
We were out last night, at a bar...
Leslie leans forward slightly.
ALICE (CONTD)
...when I had, I know it sounds
crazy, but I saw us all die.
LESLIE
Us all?
ALICE
Me...Frank, Joe...my friend Lexi
and her boyfriend Devon...a
bartender, a guy called Richard,
and...
LESLIE
...a band.
Alice, Frank and Joe gawk.
ALICE
Uh...yeah. Four band members.
LESLIE
Let me guess...the stage collapsed,
the club caught on fire, all that
jazz?
Alice nods.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Get out.
Leslie stands and moves to shuffle them out.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Out!
ALICE
So you cant help us?
LESLIE
I dont know how you got that
information, but...wait. How did
you get my address?
44.
FRANK
I mananged to get it off the
website, Im sorry, man.
LESLIE
Oh. I see. The website. So
thats...wait...
Leslie walks back inside the living room and shuffles
through some paper, before tearing out a notepad.
LESLIE (CONTD)
I didnt upload any of this new
story onto the website yet.
ALICE
Were telling the truth. I had a
vision, we got out, but now people
are dying and we...
LESLIE
...two of the band members, they...
ALICE
...were knocked out the side of the
club...the girl this morning...
LESLIE
...throat slit, right?
Alice sits down on a table, knocking off several papers.
ALICE
How did you?
LESLIE
I see things. I see things, then I
write about them. Its that simple.
FRANK
Have you been writing about us?
Leslie shrugs. Joe reaches forward and snatches the notepad
from Leslies hands.
LESLIE
Hey!
JOE
Lets see...stage collapses...club
burns down...girl gets stomped into
glass...roof collapses on short
man...ha, short man!
45.
LESLIE
I wrote those last night.
JOE
Fat guy grabs live wire and dies!
Huh, what an idiot.
ALICE
That was you, Joe.
JOE
Fat guy? Eh, close enough.
LESLIE
Like I said, they were last night.
This morning I saw the girl with
her throat slit, a man
exploding...all manner of things.
ALICE
Have you told anybody what you see?
LESLIE
Are you serious? I dont want to
get thrown into a loony bin.
FRANK
We read about the racetrack. Surely
you suspected...
LESLIE
What, suspect that Im psychic or
something? The cops put it down to
coincidence, and so did I.
Leslie turns around, but Alice grabs him by the wrist. He
half turns around to look at her.
ALICE
I know youre scared...Im
terrified. But even if there is
some explanation for this...if
there is the slightest chance that
you can help us, then isnt it
worth trying?
Leslie shuffles, not knowing how to answer.
ALICE (CONTD)
Do you at least know who is next?
Leslie stays silent.
46.
ALICE (CONTD)
OK...look, well give you some time
to think it over. If you think you
can help, here is my address.
Alice writes down her adress on the notepad, and smiles
sadly. The three exit the house, leaving him staring down at
his notepad.
CUT TO --
INT. ALICES APARTMENT - NIGHT
The group sit around the kitchen table, Frank handing around
beers. Alice stands at the window, looking down towards the
front door, which remains empty.
JOE
I maintain we should have grabbed
him and ran.
ALICE
(absent-minded)
Thou shalt not steal.
RICHARD
Its a shame that nobody told
whatever is doing this that thou
shalt not kill.
Lexi, eyes glazed, walks up behind Alice.
LEXI
Hes not coming, is he?
ALICE
Have faith, Lexi. Hell do the
right thing.
LEXI
What do you think it means? Why
would he have the same vision that
you did?
Alice shrugs, and looks back out the window.
RICHARD
Isnt it obvious? They must have
some sort of connection.
Frank puts his beer down on the table, making a point.
47.
FRANK
Can we talk about something else?
Joe takes out a joint and lights it; he offers one to Frank,
but seeing Alices gaze, he shakes his head.
RICHARD
If you were to die...would you
rather be remembered for the wrong
reasons, or forgotten completely?
At the mention of the word die, Alice walks to the bathroom
and closes the door. Lexi sits at the table and almost
skolls a whole beer.
LEXI
Remembered, definitely.
FRANK
Really? I wouldnt want to be the
next Hitler, man. Forgotten.
RICHARD
Forgotten.
JOE
Remembered!
FRANK
Youre only saying that because you
know your wife wont miss you much.
Joe actually looks hurt by this.
JOE
Youre forgetting my kids, Frank.
Better to have bad memories than
none at all.
FRANK
Whatever, man. How much time have
you spent at home in the last six
months?
JOE
As much as I can, Im a busy dude.
RICHARD
Busy doing the wrong things.
Joe sneers and chugs his beer.
CUT TO --
48.
INT. BATHROOM
Alice washes her face in the full sink, then looks at
herself in the mirror. Holding back tears, she touches the
mirror and sobs.
ALICE
Why me? What have I done wrong?
She shudders and looks down. She screams; in the reflection
of the water, Sonjas face stares back at her, screaming as
well. She bursts out of the bathroom and runs back into the
dining room.
ALICE (CONTD)
I just saw...
She stops in her tracks as she sees that Leslie is now
standing at the table, notepad in his hand.
LESLIE
I...I came to help.
A scared smile comes over Alices face, and Frank frowns.
CUT TO --
The whole group sit at the table, Frank circling on foot.
LESLIE (CONTD)
What you saw in the bathroom fits
in with what I dreamed. The
waitress...
JOE
Sonja.
LESLIE
...Sonja, head in water, screaming.
RICHARD
Do you know where shell be?
LESLIE
Ill get to that. Now, if were
going to save her, you need to
understand one thing about my
visions, about my books...
FRANK
In the book, you get to make
choices which decide whether you
live, or die.
49.
LESLIE
Exactly. I think my visions are
slightly different to yours, Alice.
You only get to see one
possibility...one death...I see
several.
ALICE
What do you mean?
LESLIE
My theory is that the decisions and
actions you take influences the way
in which you die. For example, the
girl this morning left her guitar
in the freezer, didnt she?
FRANK
How did you know that?
LESLIE
I saw it, remember? If she hadnt,
I saw her laying on the grass, cut
into tiny little pieces, underneath
a tree.
ALICE
There was a man with a chainsaw on
the front lawn.
LESLIE
There you go.
RICHARD
So is there actually any way to
avoid dying? Or do we just get the
wonderful luxury of choosing our
mode of death?
LESLIE
If you do everything pefectly, you
can certainly postpone it at least.
FRANK
Well, thats a start.
CUT TO --
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
In a tiny shack, dirty and unkempy, Sonja washes the dishes
while two children scream in the background.
50.
SONJA
(yelling)
Sofia...Gabriel! Quiet, please!
Mummy is trying to do her chores!
Sonja looks down into the sink, catching her exhausted
reflection. Her necklace dips down into the water.
CUT TO --
INT. APARTMENT
LESLIE
(reading notepad)
Lets see...the barmaid...she is
going to receive a phone call...and
if she answers it, she will be
safe...for now. If she doesnt...
CUT TO --
INT. HOUSE
Sonja takes out the plug, and her necklace begins to be
sucked down into the hole. The phone rings in the
background, and her head snaps around.
CUT TO --
INT. APARTMENT
Joe runs into the room, holding his phone in his hand.
JOE
I tried to call her, couldnt get
through.
ALICE
Why do you have her number?
Joe shrugs and sits down. Leslie continues.
LESLIE
Assuming that was the call...she
now has another choice to make.
There will be a disturbance of some
description...
CUT TO -- INT. HOUSE
Sonja continues to wash the dishes and the necklace slips
deeper into the garbage disposal. The switch for which seems
to be wobbling slightly on the wall to the left.
51.
Suddenly, a loud bang somewhere in the house. Sonjas head
spins around, confused.
SONJA
Hey! What are you doing back there?
Sonja looks at the sink, then back towards the kids. She
decides to check on them. As she leaves the room, the
garbage disposal flicks on, sending water flying onto the
floor.
LESLIE (V/O)
If she leaves the sink, she lives.
She stays, shes dead already.
JOE (V/O)
So if she leaves, shes safe?
LESLIE (V/O)
Not yet. Another path is in motion.
Sonja returns from the other room, cursing under her breath.
LESLIE (V/O)
...this one comes down to whether
or not she is in the mood for
music...
Sonja crosses the room towards the radio. The water on the
floor seems to have a mind of its own, winding its way
towards her feet. A large kitchen knife lays on the bench,
ready to carve into something. At the last minute she turns,
deciding against the music. She just avoids the water on the
floor and continues with the dishes.
ALICE
Another path?
LESLIE
Its like I said. We cant pick the
chess pieces we are left with on
the board, but we can choose how to
move those pieces around.
Leslie looks around, the group bewildered at what is
happening.
LESLIE (CONTD)
I dont always see that many
versions...some are harder to
change than others, I suppose.
52.
FRANK
So what happens to her now?
LESLIE (CONTD)
Assuming shes still alive, shell
either be at what I assume was her
home...or...where is it, I wrote it
down...a house with a statue of
Poseidon out the front. She may
decide to leave home and head
there.
JOE
I know where she lives.
Everybody looks at Joe, but they remain silent.
FRANK
...and I know the other place.
RICHARD
Where?
FRANK
There are only two houses with
Poseidon statues in the city. Id
know, because I designed one of
them a few months ago. Theres
nobody living in that one yet,
so...
ALICE
Where is it?
Frank grabs a piece of paper and writes down an address.
FRANK
OK. Alice, Leslie and I will go to
this place and see if she is there.
Joe, you take the others to her
house and do the same.
LEXI
Id...Id rather stay with Alice.
LESLIE
You come with us, Im sure Frank
doesnt mind going with the others.
Frank hesitates, but concedes.
53.
FRANK
Fine.
RICHARD
What do we do if we find her?
LESLIE
Keep her alive, I guess.
CUT TO --
INT. CAR - NIGHT
Lexi, Alice and Leslie fly through the streets, following
the instructions of the GPS.
ALICE
Tell me about your visions.
LESLIE
I dunno. Ive had them for as long
as I can remember, I suppose.
ALICE
(over-eager)
How do they happen? I felt like I
blacked out, and...
LESLIE
(snapping)
I dont really like talking about
it, OK? It varies.
Alice sits back, surprised.
ALICE
Your parents wont be wondering
where you are?
LESLIE
It was their place. They died.
ALICE
Oh...Im so sorry. Were you close?
LESLIE
I was home-schooled most my
life...never had any friends or
anything...so yeah, they were my
everything.
54.
ALICE
That must have been hard.
Alice rests her hand on Leslies shoulder. He smiles in
spite of the situation.
LESLIE
Im used to death now.
LEXI
Doesnt it drive you crazy? Always
picturing people dying?
Leslie looks at Lexi with raised eyebrows.
LESLIE
I dunno. You tell me.
CUT TO --
Joe pulls his car up to the side of the road in a very poor
suburb. He points to a tiny shack across the road.
JOE
Thats the one.
He exits the car, and the others quickly follow.
FRANK
Still not going to tell me how you
know where she lives?
JOE
What do you want me to tell ya,
Frank? Shes cool. We hung out a
coupla times.
Joe knocks on the door impatiently. After a wait, two small
children answer the door, wide eyes staring out at Joe.
JOE (CONTD)
Oh...hey, kiddies. Is Mummy home?
The taller boy doesnt answer, but looks back inside
guiltily. Listening carefully, the sound of trickling water
can be heard throughout the house.
JOE (CONTD)
xcuse me.
55.
Joe pushes the door open and enters, the others right
behind. He steps in a pool of water on the floor, and
follows it to the kitchen. He is relieved to see that there
is nobody at the sink, but it is overflowing due to a
blockage in the drain. He turns the tap off and sighs.
JOE (CONTD)
Guess she aint here.
CUT TO --
EXT. MANSION
The others pull up in front of a huge mansion, the statue of
Poseidon standing proudly out the front.
CUT TO --
INT. MANSION
Sonja, laying down in bed, cries out in pain and grabs the
sides. The cry turns into a moan as she looks down. A man,
grey haired, is going down on her.
MAN
How good does that feel?
SONJA
So good, baby...
The man continues to lick away, and Sonja rolls her eyes,
clearly in no pleasure whatsoever. His work is suddenly
interrupted by a loud doorbell ringing through the house.
MAN
Shit! Probably just some
door-knocker. Here...
The man smiles and walks to the closet. We can see that he
isnt in great shape, and he is wearing womens underwear.
He takes out handcuffs and approaches Sonja with glee.
MAN (CONTD)
Spread them, you naughty girl.
Sonja, playing along, giggles and spreads out over the bed.
The man handcuffs her wrists and ankles, above some bright
pink high heeled shoes, to the bedposts.
MAN (CONTD)
And I dont want you screaming for
help, do I?
56.
The man fishes through a box and pulls out a gag. Sonja
looks scared for a moment, but relents, allowing him to gag
her.
MAN (CONTD)
Good. Now, dont go anywhere...
The man exits the room. Sonja looks at the bedside table,
which is filled with oils, a vibrator in a charger, and
condoms; then at her wrist, which has her kids names
tattooed on it. She holds back tears and lays patiently.
Unbeknownst to her, a breeze flies through an open window,
knocking over a bottle of oil, which begins to pour onto the
floor.
The man opens the front door, now in a robe.
MAN (CONTD)
(annoyed)
What do you want?
ALICE
Can you help us? We are looking for
a friend...Sonja? About this tall,
olive skin...
MAN
Cant say Ive heard of her.
Goodnight.
He goes to close the door, but Lexi catches it.
LEXI
Thats her car out there, isnt it?
Where is she?
Back in the bedroom, Sonja watches on helplessly as the
vibrator bursts into life randomly, knocking over a candle
onto the floor. In an instant, the oil catches alight, and
the trail of fire surrounds the bed. Her eyes scream, and
she kicks out in fear, but she cant get free. The vibrator
hits the CD player, and Waterloo by ABBA begins to play.
Back at the front door, Lexi holds the door as the man tries
to close it. The music can be heard as it begins to play.
CD PLAYER
My, my, at Waterloo Napoleon did
surrender. Oh yeah, and I have met
my destiny in quite a similar way.
57.
LEXI
Nobody here, huh?
MAN
Please...leave me alone!
Sonja continues to thrash on the bed, frightened out of her
mind. She suddenly manages to kick water onto the flames,
putting them out. She sighs in relief, until she realises...
...water?
She looks down to see she has made huge puncture holes in
the waterbed with her heels. The water is quickly flooding
out of the matress and into the cavity, lapping around her
body. She screams, but to no avail.
CD PLAYER
Waterloo - Couldnt escape if I
wanted to. Waterloo - Knowing my
fate is to be with you. Waterloo -
Finally facing my Waterloo.
The water continues to rise quickly. Sonja struggles, but
only succeeds in making the situation worse. In an instant,
the water is up to her ears, her mouth and nose the only
parts sticking out of the water.
LEXI
Dont you get it? Shes going to
die!
Sonjas mouth is now below water, and she is drowning. Her
eyes remain open, screaming terror and pain.
From the door, the group can see water trickling into the
hallway.
LEXI (CONTD)
Out of the way!
Lexi pushes the man to the floor and rushes inside, Alice
and Leslie close behind. They throw the door to the bedroom
open to see Sonja fighting for life.
LESLIE
Oh, God.
Lexi rushes to grab Sonjas head and lift it out of the
water. As she does, the vibrator roars to life again and
moves toward the edge of the bedside table.
58.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Dont touch her!
Lexi pulls back just as the vibrator and the charger fall
into the water. The group watch in horror as sparks fly and
Sonjas body catapults itself around in the water. After a
few seconds, she lays still, steam coming out of the water.
She has been fried. Her arm sticks out of the bed, blood
running over the tattoo on her wrist.
CUT TO --
INT. HOUSE
Back at the shack, Joe plays in the living room with the
kids while Frank and Richard pace impatiently. From the
living room, we can see Frank answer his phone, and then
look at Joe sadly, shaking his head. Joe looks at the kids,
who continue playing and look up at him, smiling.
CUT TO --
INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT
The whole group is back at Alices apartment; the mood is
somber, with Joe in particular lost for words.
JOE
I cant believe we left those kids
there, man.
RICHARD
Executive decision. Theyll be fine
with the neighbours, and we cant
afford to get hauled in for
questioning right now.
LESLIE
I just cant believe its true.
The focus now firmly turns to Leslie.
RICHARD
Who is next?
LEXI
(desperately)
Yes, who?
Leslie shuffles in his chair uncomfortably.
59.
ALICE
Phat and Skinny died first in my
vision. Then Goober. After that, it
was hard to tell. If its in order,
I cant really help except to say
that Frank and I are last.
LESLIE
The other band guy is next.
FRANK
Spike?
JOE
You sure?
LESLIE
Positive.
FRANK
Ive been calling him all night,
home and mobile. He could be
anywhere. But I know hes rostered
on in the morning at the site -
thats where well find him.
ALICE
You can all crash here tonight, if
you want. If you can sleep.
CUT TO --
INT. BEDROOM
Alice lays awake as Frank snores softly next to her. She
gets out of bed and walks to the window, finding the weather
is worsening, wind and dark clouds everywhere. She hears a
creak, and leaves the room to investigate. She walks down
the hall and enters the dark study. There seems to be
someone stooped over the desk, and she slowly walks towards
them. A bolt of lightning makes her jump, but illuminates
Leslie, who seems to be mumbling to himself and drawing
something on a piece of paper.
LESLIE
...dead...all dead...
ALICE
Leslie?
Alice shakes Leslie, and he awakens with a yell. He grabs
her arm and squeezes hard.
60.
LESLIE
Oh...Alice? What are you...what am
I...oh, God.
They both look at the sheet, on which he has drawn a circle
over and over until he has etched through the paper and onto
the desk.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Im sorry...it was happening.
ALICE
A circle? Who is that for?
LESLIE
I dont know...I dont always get
the full picture.
Just...glimpses...
ALICE
Earlier tonight, I saw Sonjas face
in the reflection in my sink. Im
having them too.
Leslie smiles.
LESLIE
Its nice to know Im not the only
freak in the world, you know?
Alice seems to reel at the word freak.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Oh, I didnt mean to...
ALICE
Its OK. I just want to know why
this is happening.
LESLIE
I wish I knew. Been happening for
years and Im no closer to the
truth.
Beat.
LESLIE (CONTD)
What do you think?
ALICE
I think God is trying to save
us...weve obviously been marked,
and Death is a powerful being...but
(MORE)
61.
ALICE (contd)
these warnings must mean we have
some higher purpose to serve.
LESLIE
So why arent they having the same
visions?
Leslie nods toward the other rooms.
ALICE
Maybe were meant to save them.
LESLIE
Together?
Alice nods. Leslie, completely misreading the situation,
leans in to kiss her. She pushes him away, furious.
ALICE
What are you doing?
LESLIE
I thought that...
Alice storms away back to her room. Leslie sighs, putting
his hands to his head, and looks at the circle again.
CUT TO --
The circle on the screen slowly fades into the front tyre of
Joes car, which the group walk towards. Joe wiggles the
keys in his hands.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Hey, Joe...do you want me to drive?
JOE
If this is my last day on this
miserable Earth, then Im not
having some random drive around in
my baby. Got it?
LESLIE
Fine, fine.
The group pile into the car; Joe driving, Richard in the
passengers seat, the other four squeezing into the back.
They take off in the direction of the constuction site.
LEXI
Ive decided that if I die today, I
dont want anybody at the funeral
(MORE)
62.
LEXI (contd)
wearing bright colours. None of
that no black crap. I want all
the attention on me.
ALICE
Im not going to let you die, Lexi.
LEXI
Well, you havent saved anyone yet.
LESLIE
It isnt an exact science. Were
going off dreams and guesses.
RICHARD
Thats reassuring. So how do we
save Spike? Which page do we turn
to?
LESLIE
I...dont know. We have to play it
by ear.
RICHARD
Play it by ear. Thats the big
plan?
FRANK
Its all weve got, Richard. Like
he said...its not an exact
science.
RICHARD
You seemed pretty sure about the
possibilities for the barmaid.
LESLIE
(hesitant)
...some come clearer to me than
others.
Richard looks at Leslie in the rear-view mirror; a
distrusting glare. They drive along in awkward silence,
until Joe sobs suddenly. Tears begin streaming down his
chubby cheeks.
RICHARD (CONTD)
Joe...are you OK?
More sobs, more tears. Increasing.
63.
JOE
(emotional)
She had kids, man. I slept with her
about twenty times and I never even
knew she had kids.
The other stop talking, and look at Joe, who is holding back
tears. He speeds up the car slowly.
JOE (CONTD)
I thought she was some random
hooker...but she was just being a
good mother. How is it fair that
she dies before a piece of shit
like me?
FRANK
Youre not a piece of shit, Joe.
RICHARD
Youre a good man. Flawed...but
arent we all in some way?
JOE
Tell that to my wife. Tell that to
my kids. I didnt even let them
know where I was last
night...havent even told them
whats going to happen to me. Oh,
God. They dont even know...
Joe speeds up further, going way too fast. Alice leans
forward with a soothing tone.
ALICE
Its never too late to repent, Joe.
Confessing your sins is the first
step.
JOE
Whats the point? Im going to die
anyway.
ALICE
The point? Everything has...
JOE
A reason? Heard it before. Didnt
mean shit then, doesnt mean shit
now.
64.
ALICE
(annoyed)
I was going to say consequences. If
you dont slow the fuck down,
youre going to get us all killed.
The others in the back reel at this sudden change in Alices
demeanor. Frank looks away, sadly, and somewhat knowingly.
LEXI
Alice!
ALICE
Im just trying to help. To save
us...we all have things to live
for!
JOE
I dont.
Joe turns and looks at Alice; his teary face seems to calm
her a little, and she blushes. Lexi stares at her friend,
confused, and a little scared.
FRANK
You dont think you have a reason
to live? To fight? What about your
kids?
Joe slows down the car slightly.
JOE
I...I love those kids.
RICHARD
Remember those children last night.
Imagine if your kids lost what they
did.
Joe takes his foot right off the pedal, crying.
JOE
Youre right, Rich. Youre...
With no warning whatsoever, the top half of the car seems to
be completely removed as they crash into a moving object.
The world turns completely black.
Lexi groans and slowly comes to. She awakens to see --
The top half of Joes head has been ripped backwards, and is
hanging loosely straight in front of Lexi! She screams and
kicks out, detaching it completely, and it falls onto the
floor. Blood and brain matter scatter around.
65.
Richard, in the passenger seat, looks up to find himself
stuck underneath the back tray of a truck. Looking over at
Joe, he vomits and yells out. Joe remains seated in the
drivers seat, arms on the wheel; but his head above his
lower jaw has been demolished. His bottom teeth grate
against the cold bottom of the tray.
In the back, Alice slowly comes to, and looks out the left
hand side of the car. From up a hill, several men in fluro
clothing either run down, yelling, or stand with their hands
on their heads. Alice can see the path the truck took, all
the way down the hill...straight into the path of the car.
LEXI
(screaming)
Get me out! Please! Get me out! Oh
God...oh God...
Lexi kicks the door and manages to open it, stumbling
outside. The others manage to do the same, standing together
in horror at the scene before them.
RICHARD
Joe...no...
Frank spots the construction site mere blocks away and
begins to run.
FRANK
Come on!
The others follow; Alice tearing Richard away from the
horrifying scene.
The group runs along the side of the road, Lexi stumbling
constantly with tears pouring down her face. Richard steps
back to grab her hand, leading her on. His eyes drift to the
top of her head.
RICHARD
Youve got something in your hair.
Let me...
Lexi, numb, leans over slightly as Richard brushes her hair
with his hand. A smattering of teeth and part of Joes jaw
falls out to the ground.
LEXI
Is...is it gone?
RICHARD
(disgusted)
I...I got it.
66.
Alice runs up to Leslie, who is open-mouthed.
ALICE
Spike...you said...
LESLIE
We can save him, Alice! We have got
to save him!
Leslie runs ahead of Alice, towards Frank. A flash of anger
crosses Alices face, but she continues to run. They are
quickly approaching the construction site.
CUT TO --
EXT. CONSTRUCTION SITE - DAY
Frank, covered in blood, walks up to the gate of the site
with the others in toe. The guard looks Frank up and down.
GUARD
Whats up with you, Frank?
FRANK
Messy breakfast. We need to see
Spike.
GUARD
Now isnt a good time. Hes in
Miley right now.
Frank pushes into the site at that news, and the others
follow. The guard yells after them.
GUARD (CONTD)
Hey!
ALICE
Miley?
FRANK
In that.
The group stop and gape. At the edge of the site, they can
see Spike sitting behind the wheel of a wrecking ball crane,
smashing his way through the old section of building.
ALICE
The circle!
CUT TO --
INT. CRANE
67.
Spike sits with headphones in, obviously taking pleasure in
the destruction he is creating. As the ball smashes into the
building, the wire holding the ball smashes against some
bricks, slowly beginning to fray.
CUT TOO --
EXT. SITE
Frank looks back to the others.
FRANK
Someone has to go and...
LESLIE
Alice!
Frank turns around to see Alice sprinting down towards the
crane.
FRANK
(yelling)
Alice!
Frank moves to follow her, but several security guards come
up and grab the group.
FRANK (CONTD)
Let me go! My girlfriend is out
there!
Alice rushes up and begins to knock frantically on the door
of the crane. Spike looks at her and locks the door,
frowning.
ALICE
Spike! Open the door!
The ball smashes into the building again, and the wire frays
further. The ball slowly begins to rotate in a circle,
throwing off the direction. Spike is too busy glaring at
Alice to notice.
ALICE (CONTD)
Its your turn!
SPIKE
(yelling)
My turn to what?
ALICE
To die!
68.
The ball suddenly lurches as the wire snaps slightly. The
cabin is pulled forward, and Spike falls down.
ALICE (CONTD)
Get out of there!
Spike tries to exit, but the door is jammed and wont open.
The wire snaps further and the whole structure begins to
bend. The ball swings down, heading straight for the
cabin...and Spike.
SPIKE
Shit! Help me!
Alice, desperately, looks around and grabs a crowbar on the
ground. She starts to lever the door open as the ball swing
closer and closer.
SPIKE (CONTD)
Hurry up!
ALICE
Im trying!
Just as the ball is about to hit, the door flies open. Spike
jumps out just in time. The ball smashes into the cabin,
sending pieces of metal flying everywhere. Fortunately, they
all avoid Spike and Alice, who huddle on the ground in fear.
The security guards holding the group release them and run
down towards the chaos. The group follow, Frank grabbing
Alice and hugging her tighter than ever.
SPIKE
You...you saved me?
Alice, releasing herself from Frank, walks up to Leslie. She
is furious.
ALICE
You lied.
LESLIE
What?
ALICE
You said that Spike was next. You
lied.
Everybody stares at Leslie, who looks nervous.
69.
LESLIE
I...what was I meant to tell Joe?
Youre going to die? He would have
panicked!
FRANK
Thats why you let him drive...he
never should have been in that
seat. You son of a bitch.
LESLIE
I tried to stop him!
FRANK
You didnt try hard enough!
Frank grabs Leslie by the collar.
SPIKE
What the fuck is going on?
FRANK
(ignoring Spike)
You tell us what is going to happen
now, or youre going to skip the
queue.
Leslie, terrified, points to Lexi.
LESLIE
Her.
LEXI
No...no!
Lexi begins to back away, freaking out. She tears at her
hair madly.
FRANK
How do we save her?
Leslie points at Richard, who frowns.
LESLIE
Him...he causes Lexis death.
RICHARD
Me? I wouldnt!
LESLIE
...and she causes his.
Lexi backs away faster, terrified.
70.
LEXI
Stay away from me...stay away!
Lexi runs away as fast as her legs will carry her.
ALICE
Lexi, come back!
The group begins to follow her, sans Spike, who remains
where he was standing.
SPIKE
(yelling)
Can somebody please tell me what
the fuck just happened?
Lexi sprints through the site, avoiding workers and the
numerous holes that scatter the area. She turns to see
Richard amongst the group chasing her, so she turns to the
left, right in front of a concrete mixer.
DRIVER
Jesus!
The driver swerves to miss her, ramming straight into a
wall, knocking the driver out. Lexi continues to run, into a
small building on the edge of the site. The others follow,
with Richard up the back, his small legs pumping as fast as
possible.
In the truck, the unconcious drivers hand slips and hits
the control panel. The metal slide for the concrete swings
around and knocks Richard off his feet and into a large
hole. He smacks his head on a rock at the bottom, knocking
him out cold. The concrete slide comes to a rest at the top
of the hole.
Lexi, in the dark, fumbles around for a lightswitch and
turns it on. She finds herself in a room full of powertools.
Outside, the others stand apprehensively.
ALICE
Let me go. Shell listen to me.
Alice enters the building behind Lexi, who is standing in
the middle of the room; a drill to her left, a massive
industrial sander to her right. A large air compressor sits
in the corner, and a massive buzz saw lays near the back.
ALICE (CONTD)
Lexi...calm down. Its me. Alice.
Lexi is a mess. Hair frazzled, eyes wide, mouth open.
71.
LEXI
You heard what he said. Its my
turn! Im next!
ALICE
(calm)
I heard him, Lex. But you saw what
just happened. We saved Spike! And
if we can save him, we can save you
too.
LEXI
Where is Richard?
ALICE
Hes not here, Alice...its just
you and me...come on...come on...
Lexi slowly makes her way towards Alice.
Outside, a few drops of rain land on the generator outside,
and a few sparks fly. Inside the building, all of the
equipment begins to turn on. Lexi panics, stepping back
towards the sander.
ALICE (CONTD)
Lexi! Its OK...youll be fine...
Lexi is hysterical now, tears streaming. She backs up closer
and closer to the sander...
LEXI
Im not ready to die!
ALICE
You wont! Please, come back to me!
LEXI
Alice...I...Im not ready for this.
Im not strong enough.
ALICE
The girl who protected me all
through college? The girl who stood
behind me...through all the things
I...that I...if youre not strong
enough, then nobody is.
LEXI
Alice...
72.
ALICE
Come to me, Lex. Come on...
Lexi listens. She walks away from the sander and past the
air compressor. Unfortunately, the hose to the compressor
flies off the machine, sending it flying around the room.
The bolt at the end narrowly misses Lexis head, but the air
flow sends Lexis long hair...straight into the buzz saw.
LEXI
(screaming)
No! No! No!
Alice can only look on in horror as her friend is dragged
backwards onto the buzz saw. She screams in pain as her body
dances atop the huge saw, sending blood and guts flying in
all directions. The others burst in at the screaming, and
gape at the scene. Lexis body has rested on top of the saw,
which slowly chews through her chest and out the other side,
sending intestines splattering in every direction. The
equipment suddenly turns off, leaving the scene silent.
ALICE
...I...Lexi...
Alice backs out of the building, resting on the concrete
mixer. Without warning, a small hand bursts out of the
ground next to her, covered in wet cement. Alice screams and
kicks the hand away. She watches it in horror as it spasms
for one last time, then sinks into the wet cement, never to
be seen again.
ALICE (CONTD)
Richard? Richard!?
Leslie and Frank burst out of the building in time to see
Alice turn around, a horrified look upon her face. She looks
up at them, shuddering slightly, slowly stepping backwards.
FRANK
Alice...what are you doing?
ALICE
I...I...
FRANK
You can fight it...dont let it
take you!
Alice shakes her head, grabbing her hair and shaking it
around. In an instant, she turns and begins to run out of
the site as fast as her legs will carry her.
73.
FRANK
(yelling)
Alice!
Frank moves to follow, but Leslie grabs his arm.
FRANK
What are you doing?
LESLIE
Wait!
A truck rushes past where Frank was about to run. Frank
looks at Leslie, shocked.
FRANK
You knew?
Leslie nods sadly. Frank looks up, but Alice is gone.
CUT TO --
INT. ALICES APARTMENT - DUSK
Frank throws his phone down in frustration as Leslie sits at
the table, flipping through his notepad. Frank leaves the
room and comes back with his bong, sitting next to Leslie.
LESLIE
Is that wise?
Frank chuckles, in spite of the situation.
FRANK
You know whats funny? Alice always
said this damn pipe would kill me.
Beat.
FRANK (CONTD)
Shes not answering her cell.
Beat.
FRANK (CONTD)
Did you know how that was all going
to play out today? Honestly?
Leslie nods. Frank takes a hit from his bong.
FRANK (CONTD)
Just answer me this...was there any
chance that we could have saved
them? Any at all?
74.
Leslie shakes his head, eyes on the table. Frank nods.
FRANK (CONTD)
Look...I understand why you did
what you did. It cant be easy
having to tell six complete
strangers they are doomed to die.
Frank takes another hit and coughs.
FRANK (CONTD)
So...how does this story end?
LESLIE
Do you really want to know?
Frank nods.
LESLIE (CONTD)
The only vision I have had of you
and Alice goes back to your
original death...her holding you as
the flames close in.
FRANK
Really? You see our original
deaths?
Leslie nods.
FRANK (CONTD)
What do you suppose that means? I
mean, you said you saw new ones for
everyone else right?
LESLIE
In the vision I saw the girl get
her face smashed in by a
light...then I saw the guitar
string rip her throat...so yeah. I
saw everything.
Frank stands, excited.
FRANK
Maybe there is no second death for
us, then! Maybe we survived!
Leslie looks unconvinced.
LESLIE
That truck was going to hit you,
remember? You are on Deaths list.
75.
Frank sits back down.
FRANK
Damn. But what about Alice? In this
dream, or whatever...did you
actually see her die?
LESLIE
Hmm...she was holding you, and the
whole place was on fire. There was
no way that she could have...
FRANK
Did you actually see her die?
LESLIE
Well, no, technically.
Frank jumps up again.
FRANK
Weve got to find her, now! She
might be safe!
LESLIE
If shes safe, whats the big rush?
FRANK
Well...ahh...Alice hates me telling
this story.
LESLIE
What have you got to lose?
Frank takes another bong hit, and points to it. A large
thunderclap can be heard from outside.
FRANK
Alice hates me smoking pot...but a
few years ago it was the least of
my problems. I got in with the
wrong crowd and really got hooked
on all sorts of shit...cocaine,
mostly.
LESLIE
Thats heavy.
FRANK
You have no idea. Anyway, I got
found out, got sent to rehab...and
thats where I met Alice.
76.
LESLIE
What? Alice?
FRANK
Yep.
LESLIE
No way.
FRANK
Its crazy, right? Turns out she
had problems of her own. Shed been
diagnosed with bipolar as a
teenager, and I guess by the time
shed reached College shed had
enough. She tried to kill herself
with painkillers, and rather than
admit her problem publically, her
parents sent her to rehab. Made her
someone elses problem, you know.
LESLIE
So in the car was...
FRANK
Her in the car...hell, her running
over to save Spike. When shes bad,
her mood swings like crazy. She
becomes a completely different
person.
LESLIE
How did Lexi not know?
FRANK
You didnt know Lexi. Nice enough
girl, but her head was so far up
her own ass she could see out her
mouth. But give her credit, she
kept Alices rehab a secret.
Beat.
FRANK (CONTD)
Even if Alice is safe...she doesnt
know it. If she goes off the deep
end...
LESLIE
...youre afraid shell kill
herself.
Frank nods.
77.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Think. Where would she go?
FRANK
I cant think, Leslie.
Beat.
FRANK (CONTD)
(warmly)
Shes been getting a lot better.
Once we started hanging out, then
eventually dating...I saw a big
change in her. She still had her
down days...but theyve been less
and less frequent lately.
LESLIE
Where does she turn on those down
days?
Frank looks at the wall. A cross stares back at him, and he
clicks.
FRANK
I think I know where she is.
CUT TO --
EXT. CHURCH - NIGHT
Leslie pulls his car up to a large and old church. It is
pouring with rain and a storm seems to be brewing. The tall
trees next to the church are being thrown around violently
by the wind.
LESLIE
You sure this is the place?
FRANK
Only one way to find out.
The two exit the car, and Frank leads the way to the front
of the church. He pushes the doors open and enters. He stops
in his tracks, with Leslie behind.
ALICE
I knew youd come.
Standing at the front of the church, in a long and beautiful
white dress, stands Alice. Behind her, an elderly chaplain
stands smiling. Frank, open mouthed, makes his way up
towards her.
78.
FRANK
Alice...what is this?
ALICE
Our future...or, if we dont have a
future...our now.
Thunder cracks outside, and the lights flicker. Leslie looks
around, uncertain.
LESLIE
Guys, I dont think we should...
FRANK
(ignoring Leslie)
Its all I ever wanted, Alice.
ALICE
After losing Lexi...I...I just knew
that God was punishing me for what
Ive done in the past.
FRANK
Alice, what happened to you wasnt
your fault.
ALICE
(crying)
Nobody made me take those pills,
Frank.
FRANK
You cant help your...your...the
way you are. That was Gods design
for you.
ALICE
Then His design was faulty.
The lights suddenly cut out. The chaplain begins to walk
around the church, lighting candles. Shadows of the group
begin to dance around the walls. For an instant, there seems
to be a third person standing behind Frank and Alice, but
when Leslie looks again, the shadow is gone.
FRANK
Youre not faulty. Youre
beautiful.
Alice smiles and rubs her hand on Franks chin.
79.
ALICE
I didnt deserve you.
FRANK
(laughing)
Who, me? The dirtbag junkie?
ALICE
You...the compassionate boyfriend.
The two kiss. Alice pulls away, looking at Frank with
regretful tears in her eyes. Leslie stands, concerned.
LESLIE
Seriously! We have to go!
ALICE
Did you see it too?
Alice looks at Leslie, who shakes his head, then back to
Frank. She leans in close to his ear.
ALICE
(whispering)
I have a confession to make.
FRANK
What is it?
ALICE
(whispering)
The reason I left the construction
site...it wasnt because of Lexi...
FRANK
Huh? Then why did you...
ALICE
...I saw it, Frank.
FRANK
What did you see?
A sudden gust of wind breaks a branch off a tree outside,
which smashes through a glass pane high on the wall of the
church, above the massive and old pipe organ. Leslie jumps
up as the rain and wind begins to enter the church.
ALICE
(crying)
This. I saw this.
Another massive thunderclap.
80.
ALICE (CONTD)
...and I finally knew that this is
where I was meant to be...where it
was meant to end. With you.
FRANK
End? Alice, it doesnt have to end.
I wont let it!
Leslie looks up at the pipe organ. The wind is blasting
through the pipes, sending eerie music echoing around the
old church. One of the pipes seems to be wobbling slightly
under the strain.
ALICE
Its time, Frank.
Frank grabs Alice; he is crying too.
FRANK
This isnt you talking, Alice! You
have to listen to me!
ALICE
This is me...this is me...
FRANK
No...please...come back to
me...please...
Alice leans in and kisses Frank on the cheek.
ALICE
I love you.
Frank kisses her back passionately on the mouth.
FRANK
I love you too.
Frank moves to hug Alice tighter, but she steps back and
pushes him away. He looks up as a bolt of lightning shoots
through the window, hitting the pipe organ. The loose pipe
flies off, through the air, and impales Frank right through
the chest. Leslie screams and jumps back. The chaplain
faints, falling to the floor. Alice, expressionless, hugs
Frank and helps him to the floor, where he coughs up blood
and breathes heavily.
FRANK (CONTD)
(weak)
A...A...Ali...
81.
ALICE
(calm)
Shh, shh. Its OK. Im here.
Alice looks down at Leslie, who stands, stunned.
ALICE (CONTD)
Ill take care of Frank. Get the
chaplain out of here!
Leslie moves to the old man and begins to help him out of
the church. As he moves down the steps, he hears the door
slam closed. He runs up to the door and bangs on it
desperately.
LESLIE
(yelling)
What are you doing?
Inside the church, Alice locks the door and slowly moves
towards the closest candle stand. Without hesitation, she
kicks it over. The curtains on the side light on fire, and
it quickly spreads.
Outside, Leslie runs around to a window and manages to elbow
the glass, but there are bars behind, and he is unable to
climb in. He manages to look in and see Alice, again
expressionless, kicking over more of the candle stands.
LESLIE (CONTD)
Stop it! You dont have to do this!
Alice ignores him and continues. Leslie runs around the back
of the church, desperately looking for a way in. He finds
the back door, but it is locked as well. He bangs his fists
on it, yelling in anger.
Inside the church, the flames now fully envelope the room.
Alice walks calmly up to where Frank lays, taking his last
breaths. In a strikingly similar fashion to the premonition,
Alice holds Franks now dead body as the flames close in.
She closes her eyes as they fully consume her. Not one
scream is heard from outside.
CUT TO --
EXT. LESLIES HOUSE - NIGHT
Leslie pulls up to his house in his car, the rain and storm
receding slightly. He is crying, and he rests his head
against the wheel, breathing heavily. He looks at his house
and gasps. The basement door, locked before, is wide open.
He exits his car, walking across the lawn carefully, and
slowly enters the dark basement.
82.
There are books and shelves everywhere, covered in layers of
dust. In the corner, the furnace is blazing. In front of the
furnace, a large figure stands, throwing papers into the
flames.
LESLIE
Who the hell are...
The figure turns - it is Bludworth.
LESLIE (CONTD)
...Dad?
BLUDWORTH
Hello, son.
LESLIE
What are you doing here? What are
you doing to my stuff?
BLUDWORTH
Im protecting you.
Bludworth picks up more papers, and throws them into the
furnace.
LESLIE
I dont know what youre talking
about.
BLUDWORTH
Dont you?
Bludworths piercing gaze unnerves his son.
LESLIE
You know about me?
Beat.
LESLIE (CONTD)
I dont need protecting. There is
nothing to connect me to...
BLUDWORTH
Im not protecting you from the
police. Im protecting you from
yourself.
Bludworth grabs a scrapbook off a shelf and walks towards
his son. The flames crackle and snap in the background.
83.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
Its time I told you the truth
about your mother.
LESLIE
You told me, she died in a car
accident...
BLUDWORTH
I didnt tell you the whole story.
CUT TO --
INT. LECTURE THEATRE
A lecture theatre in the 1980s. A young man, presumably
Bludworth, stumbles into the room, obviously late. He
bumbles his way to the nearest seat, which happens to next
to a beautiful young woman.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
We met at Medical School. So long
ago now...we both had dreams of
becoming doctors, helping the sick,
the frail...
CUT TO --
EXT. WEDDING - DAY
An older Bludworth pulls back his new wifes veil and kisses
her as their friends and family applaud.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
We rushed into our engagement...I
can aknowledge that now. But when
youre young, and in love...you
tend to get in over your head.
CUT TO --
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
Bludworth and his wife lay in bed, asleep.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
Life was perfect. Dream wife, dream
career...until it manifested.
LESLIE (V/O)
Mum could see it too?
84.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
She certainly could.
The wife screams and wakes up, panting heavily. Bludworth
wakes in an instant, looking at her, concerned.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
She told me shed had a terrible
nightmare...a boat sinking off the
coast from where we lived. She
described the details of the
dream...each individual death, the
way their died, even the
expressions on their faces...it was
so vivid. I told her it was
nothing...that it was just a dream.
But the next day...
CUT TO --
INT. HOUSE
The wife approaches Bludworth holding a newspaper, crying.
The article on the front cover shows a boat accident, with
all the victims killed.
CUT TO --
INT. BASEMENT
Bludworth looks at the scrapbook and frowns.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
I still wasnt convinced...but then
the dreams became more regular. And
each time...they would come true.
Like clockwork. A building
collapse...a mine explosion...every
single time.
LESLIE
Did...did she try to help?
BLUDWORTH
I told her not to. Too risky, I
told her. She didnt listen. She
tried to warn the people she saw,
if she could track them down in
time. But they wouldnt listen.
Even if they did...they died
anyway. One by one, in horrible
accidents.
Bludworth turns his back, staring into the flames.
85.
CUT TO --
INT. HOSPITAL
An older Bludworth is working with a patient when his wife
walks in, a stressed look on her face.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
This continued for some
time...until one day, when she had
a particular vision...
LESLIE (V/O)
What did she see?
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
...her own death.
CUT TO --
INT. BASEMENT
Leslie steps back, shocked.
LESLIE
Her own death?
BLUDWORTH
She was due to travel by train the
next day to visit her Aunt. She had
a vision that the train would
derail, killing her.
LESLIE
What did she do?
BLUDWORTH
She didnt go. She tried to stop
the train, but it went...and, of
course, it derailed. I told her it
was over...but she was terrified.
Convinced that Death himself was
following her wherever she went.
She started to see herself dying
everywhere...crossing the road, at
the diner, at the hospital...it
slowly drove her insane. But she
continued to successfully avoid
death each time.
CUT TO --
INT. HOSPITAL
86.
Bludworth wheels in a decidely pregnant wife.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
Then, the greatest news of
all...she was pregnant. With you.
The boy who never should have been
born.
Bludworth stands next to the hospital bed proudly, holding
baby Leslie.
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
I thought that perhaps new life
would defeat death...but it wasnt
true. Your mother continued to
dream about her death, and she
continued to cheat it. Until one
day...she realised that it was too
dangerous to be around you.
LESLIE (V/O)
So what did she do?
BLUDWORTH (V/O)
What she thought she had to.
Bludworth enters the bedroom to find his wife dangling,
dead, from a noose hung from the ceiling. In the next room,
he can hear his son crying.
CUT TO --
INT. BASEMENT
Bludworth opens the scrapbook, pointing to drawings from
Leslies childhood.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
Raising you alone wasnt easy.
Especially when it became obvious
that you were just like your
mother.
One of the drawings is of a car exploding; the next, of a
man standing over a boy, stabbing his throat.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
They wanted me to get you
professional help...but only I knew
the truth. I withdrew you from
school and did the best I could in
the circumstances. I became a
coroner so I could...keep an

eye...on your...projects. I used my
position...your dream victims...to
test some theories I held about
finding a way to defeat death for
good. Because I knew that one day,
you would be in the same situation
as your mother. But nothing works.
Bludworth turns around, unblinking. He tosses the scrapbook
into the fire with disdain.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
Do you understand what Im saying?
Death cant be defeated.
LESLIE
Somebody told me that I get these
visions for a reason...that I
should be serving a higher purpose.
BLUDWORTH
And how did that turn out for
Alice?
Bludworth pulls out photocopies of Leslies notepad and
returns them to his pocket. Leslie looks stunned at the
mention of Alices name.
BLUDWORTH (CONTD)
You cant help these people.
LESLIE
But Mum tried to...
BLUDWORTH
(yelling)
You cant help them!
Bludworth flies into a rage, grabbing boxes and throwing
them into the fire. Leslie backs out of the basement,
running into the night, as smoke pours out of the open door
of the basement.
CUT TO --
INT. GARAGE
Spike sits by himself in his garage, plucking an an acoustic
guitar. The lights flicker, and he looks up timidly. A ping
pong ball bounces on the floor from the side of the garage,
and Spike watches it as it bounces once...twice...thrice...
