Assignment/Activity Title 1960s Interdisciplinary Year Freshman
Skill Research Portfolio CategoryEthics
For my 1960s Interdisciplinary, I used Animoto in order to create a slideshow containing my research pertaining to animal cruelty in the 1960s and now. This required me to look at the treatment of animals in the 1960s and then proceed to see how animals are still treated today. I had to look through countless pictures and detailed descriptions of how animals have been wronged and abused by humans. Although I was proud of the heart- wrenching feeling I received from seeing these pictures and readings these descriptions, as it proves that I can feel human empathy for others, it also inhibited my ability to look and read the documents objectively, without feeling emotional attachment. Such a violent and traumatizing topic is a good topic to use in order to gain objectivity for further research topics. Although this objectivity is helpful to look through articles and photos to find what I need, I need to consider for presentation what focuses in my presentation will cause the more emotional outbursts, in order to appeal to my audiences emotional side so I can persuade them to follow my path of thinking. This means that in order to create a quality slideshow for an audience I need to access both my right and left brain, my objective and emotional thinking so that I can research the right things which need to be included and so that I can find emotional content so that I can persuade an audience to my side of thinking.
Among the difficult things to do that I found in the research, if found the comparison to animal treatment today especially hard. This was difficult because it required me to not only find legitimate, credible sources for animal cruelty fifty years ago, I also had to relate this to animal cruelty today which meant finding animal cruelty in America, something that is talked about in excess but without any variety. This made me sort through countless repetitive stories of cruelty to find a variety of different types of cruelty still performed in America. I had to dismiss stories, no matter how tragic, if I found they would not be to my advantage. These actions I committed for research have made me a much better researcher than I was as I am able to understand what I need and I can see and research what I need to in a positive and effective manner.
