And on the seventh day, God went to the lake...
The ancient story of creation as it is written in Genesis goes that God created the universe in all
its beauty - light and sky, trees and the sun and the moon and sea monsters and birds and cattle
and creeping things and humans. The Genesis creation story goes that God creates all this in six
days then takes a look at his handy work and sees that it is good, actually very good. Then the
creation story says this And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and
he went to the lake. Just checking to see if you were paying attention. The ancient story of
creation doesnt say that God went to the lake on the seventh day, but it does say that he rested.
And rest is kind of what happens at the lake, right? God rests. God goes to the lake. And so
being made in Gods image, included in Gods commandments to Moses and the Israelites at Mt.
Sinai is this word that they too are to go to the lake. Ok, God doesnt exactly say that either.
But what God does say is that his people are to remember the Sabbath day (the seventh day),
and keep it holy. Moses and Gods people are to rest and set aside time for God.

With summer upon us many of us (myself included) are in lake mode. After the winter we had
this past year this is very much a good thing. Can I get an amen? Summer/lake season means
that for our church and many churches Sunday morning worship attendance sinks like a weight
tied to the end of a fishing pole line when dropped in water. This is just how it is. But its ok.
And heres why.

Just because you or I are on vacation from First Lutheran Church on Sunday morning doesnt
mean you or I have to be on vacation from God. Google the nearest church to your lake and go
worship on Sunday morning. Appreciate worshipping with a different crowd, pastor, and perhaps
even style of worship. Another opportunity is that if you are around during the week, the first
Wednesday night of the month well have a campfire worship on the south side of church.
Please come for songs, scripture, prayer, and treats. If you are around on Sunday mornings,
throughout June and July well be doing a series that will match this years Vacation Bible School/
Kids Club theme Team God.

Summer time doesnt have to be a vacation from God. Whatever it looks like, summer can be a
time of enjoying Gods creation, resting as God did on the seventh day, and setting aside time for
him, that we would know more and more of a God who never takes a vacation from us.

Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? Psalm 139:7

peace,
Patrick
