EDUC 526 Capstone Experience in Digital Teaching and Learning Jennifer Courduff Modeling with Geometry, Geometric Measurement & Dimension Spring 2014
Abstract Modeling with Geometry, Geometric Measurement & Dimension is a 3-week unit plan intended for an 8 th grade Geometry class. Students will be able to apply geometric concepts in modeling situations, explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems. This will be done by using various methods, specifically project-based learning. Students will create a real-world problem that compares various volumes, specifically cones, cylinders, and spheres. Using mathematical formulas and measuring devices, students will collect necessary data. Using multitudes of technology tools, they will organize and present their projects. Collaboration is encouraged throughout the unit, including peer support and reflection.
Goal(s) of the Portfolio This portfolio project will provide students with math, language arts, and technology skills, which are included in the common core standards. Students will be mastering geometry skills, specifically modeling with geometry, geometric measurement and dimension. They will be able to apply density concepts with area and volume in modeling situations. This will be done by doing various activities, mainly project based and technology rich.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Portfolio Working with various technologies rich tools, collaborating with peers, and applying main concepts to project based learning, students will be able to attain the portfolio goals. Students will work in groups to create a real-world problem having to compare various volumes of items commonly sold/purchased. Solving the problem will be calculated using mathematical formulas and measured, both of which will be documented using Educreations app and Numbers Megan Ramos Azusa Pacific University EDUC 526 Capstone Experience in Digital Teaching and Learning Jennifer Courduff Modeling with Geometry, Geometric Measurement & Dimension April 27, 2014 app. The data will be organized, explained, and presented using iMovie. Students will reflect on their peers projects using Blogger. Activities for students will be modified appropriately throughout the lesson to accommodate each students needs.
Objectives: Students will be able to: Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations. Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems. Collaborate in groups to create a project comparing the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres. They will create a real-world problem having to compare various volumes of items commonly sold/purchased. Measure and compare volume of containers in mL. Solve the problem using mathematical formulas, which will be documented using a note taking app, Educreations. Organize their data in a chart using Numbers. Create a final presentation for their project using iMovie. Use Blogger to reflect on their projects as well as their peers presentations.

Could any containers not handle it (spill over)? Did it surprise you? Include examples from both your group's project and some of your classmates'. What did you learn from this project? How will it effect how you use or purchase containers in the future? Comment to at least two peers blogs (feedback & suggestions)
