Why does Crai g Scott want to make i t easi er to break up our country?
Dear f r i end,
We' ve been down thi s road twi ce before. In 1980 and i n 1995,
the Parti Qu6b6coi s hel d two referendums on the
possi bl e
separati on of Quebec from Canada. And the peopl e of Quebec
chose Canada bot h t i mes.
In the aftermath of the 1995 vote, i t was obvi ous that more
certai nty and cl ari ty was needed to determi ne the appropri ate
and l egal way to deal wi th the possi bl e separati on of a
provi nce. The Li beral government even went so far as to
recei ve an opi ni on from the Supreme Court on thi s i ssue.
The Court stated that the government needed "a deci si on of a
cl ear maj ori ty of the popul ati on of Quebec on a cl ear questi on
to pursue successi on". They used the term "cl ear maj ori ty" not
l ess t han 13 t i mes.
And thi s ooi ni on formed the basi s of the Cl ari tv Act.
But on January 28th, Crai g Scott, your MP, i ntroduced a bi l l i n
Parl i ament that woul d revoke the Cl ari ty Act and state that
50% pl us 1 i s al l t hat i s r equi r ed t o f or ce negot i at i ons on t he
break-up of Canada. And because Mr. Scott' s bi l l doesn' t take
i nto account voter turnout, thi s actual l y means negoti ati ons on
the possi bl e separati on of Quebec coul d be tri ggered wi th the
suppor t of l ess t han hal f t he act ual popul at i on.
