Fools
It is sad to see that a lot of
people never question what
they hear and are prepared to
accept facts without checking
them. They seem eager to follow who screams louder.
Full Fact is an independent fact checking organisation. They provide
free tools, information and advice so that anyone can check the claims
they hear from politicians and the media. http://fullfact.org/
Research can sometimes land you into unsafe territory, especially
online. I was checking the veridicity of a quote and ended up in a racist
white supremacist website. Knowledge is power: you cannot fight your
enemy if you do not know what they are up to.
Croydon Green Fair
I have never been to the Croydon Green Fair before
but will attend this year to support the Stop the South
London Incinerator Group stall if one is set up or just
to see what is going on. I am also interested in
meeting Jo Bodley and her bags fromold umbrellas.
http://familyhandspun.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/the-umbrella-hunter.html
Andrew Dickinson started his website Green Croydon in 2010. He
wanted to encourage residents to be
more environmentally aware and said:
I wanted to perk up our environmental
behaviour as a borough and make
Croydon a greener place to live, work,
and visit. While putting the site
together I was overwhelmed by how
many environmental groups Croydon
could claim to have.
What these well intentioned groups
lacked and deserved was their own
annual event when they can all be
together in one place.
Croydon Green Fair was born. I have
already met a few of those taking part
and will go with an open mind.

Our environmental concerns
In March 2014 Shirley Life
covered Environmental Visual
Audit (EVA) and Neighbourhood
Action Group (NAG) and then
found out that no such groups are
in operation in our area. Worse
still, nobody seemed to have any
interest in setting them up.
Monthly clean-ups, however well
meaning they might be, are not having an impact on the litter front.
A new way must be found to tackle litter which is a social, rather than
a business, problem. Behaviour change among the public is crucial to
solving the issue, and this comes down to education as to how not to
litter and enforcement of anti-littering laws. Peter Schroeder,
environment manager for McDonalds, confirmed that every outlet runs
litter patrols covering a 150m radius of their front door and
competitions are held every year to find the best campaigns run by
individual outlets or franchise owners. One drive-through outlet in
Essex has started printing the registration numbers of its customers
cars on their receipts, for instance a clear deterrent to dropping litter.
Local authorities have a key role to play as well, both with carrot and
stick. They need to do it in earnest.
The rubbish in Langland Gardens is a familiar sight, although I had
never seen a dumped piano as the one found in Lake Road. What are
we going to find next? Free
collections of items of
furniture should be re-
introduced, once a year,
because fly-tipping is more
expensive than any revenue
collected by the Council.

After 8 long years of Tory administration,
Croydon elected a Labour Council. I played
my part in bringing this change about and
will closely follow, with some trepidation,
how matters will evolve.
The new Mayors speech was a good start:
she said that she will not put up with
personal attacks and loutish behaviour in the
Chamber, she will have her own website,
she will support women who cannot speak
English and are, therefore, isolated and she
wants Croydon to be a place where people
are proud to live. Her speech was assertive
and down to earth.
Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed is a
professional woman with a First-class
Degree in Mathematics and a Masters
Degree in Scientific and Engineering
Software Technology. She was born and
brought up in Kerala, in India, and never thought she would leave it.
She came to the UK to join her husband fifteen years ago.
Councillor Patricia Hay-Justice will be the Deputy Mayor. I hope they
will embody the change we
desperately need in our diverse
Borough.
On the first anniversary of the riots,
I helped organise a silent vigil in
The Queens Gardens. The
message has not changed: One
Croydon One Vision.

LETS TALK ABOUT
ENGLISH
LITERATURE
I was asked to sign a petition because Education Secretary Michael
Gove is planning to make significant changes to English lessons. The
petitioner wrote that syllabus changes mean that classic US books
would be removed from the GCSE syllabus and the focus would be on
pre 20
th
century writers from England. I was puzzled and checked on
http://fullfact.org/ :
Last year the Department for Education set out its requirements for
new courses beginning in September 2015, including that for GCSE
English Literature.
The new requirements mean exam boards have had to update their
syllabuses. And one board, OCR, has said the requirements mean
there is no room on its new syllabus for some of the American novels
that had previously been staples of the course. Other boards are due
to finalise their own syllabuses by the end of this week.
Being dropped from the syllabus doesnt mean the books are banned
from schools. But it does mean students wont be examined on them,
something that is in practice likely to influence how often theyre taught.
GCSE English Literature Syllabus before September 2015:
Students of the English Literature GCSE had been required to study at
least six texts, including ones that
had English, Welsh, or Irish literary heritage
were from different cultures and traditions
were by contemporary writers
In the course of this students had to look at least one work of prose,
poetry and drama. In England they had to study at least one play by
Shakespeare. American fiction such as To Kill a Mockingbird qualified
as coming from a different tradition to English, Welsh and Irish
12

13
literature, meaning it could form a core part of the curriculum.
The new requirements mean students must study texts including:
At least one play by Shakespeare
At least one 19
th
century novel
At least one piece of fiction or drama from the British Isles from 1914
onwards
A selection of poetry since 1789, including Romantic poetry.
Nothing prohibits exam boards from including twentieth century
American fiction on their syllabuses, but if they do include such books
these will be extras in terms of what is required.
The thought that 15 year olds might easily connect with Shakespeare
and Dickens in such a diverse country as the UK is almost ridiculous
because most young people are alienated by the culture, the
characters and the language of those authors.
Shakespeare was born around 1564 and Dickens in
1812 which are two different eras. Why not choose
Marlowe or Trollope? How many would consider The
Wanderer by Frances Burney or The Return of the
Native by Thomas Hardy or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide by
RL Stevenson or The War of the Worlds and The Time
Machine by HG Wells or Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad or The
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde? As an ex teacher, I can assure
you that these books could captivate a young persons mind!
Mr. Gove is delusional: what would reading Hamlet, not an English
prince, by the way, contribute to the education of young people whose
spelling is often atrocious and who ignore punctuation, apostrophes
and syntax? The text would have to be translated to them! Mr. Gove
says he has not banned any books. However, by telling teachers that
they have to teach Romantic Poets, a 19
th
century novel, a
Shakespeare play and a British text, he is narrowing the curriculum
and taking choice away from teachers. It is highly improbable that
teachers, with all the other demands heaped on them, may teach
more than these set texts. How would the young people, especially if
from a disadvantaged background, benefit?
Is Mr. Gove trying to go back to the good old days that never were?

How To Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer
I was particularly interested in the article below because I find
commercial hand sanitizers drying and, also, I question the ingredients
used to make them. Please note that Mother Earth News is an
American website so a few adjustments need to be made when
reproducing articles. This sanitizer may be be slightly costlier in the UK
than the off-the-shelf varieties, especially if you choose organic
materials. It contains no alcohol and is totally natural. Russell and I will
be trying it out and will report back.
Pocket-size gel hand sanitizers are handy for on-the-go cleanup, but
these formulas are drying, costly, and contain 60 to 90 percent alcohol.
Why rub a formula on your hands that is potentially toxic before you eat?
The risk elevates for mothers who carry sanitizers to clean childrens
hands. The good news: You can make your own safe, affordable hand
sanitizer.
Witch hazel, tea tree oil, and peppermint have antiseptic and astringent
properties. Theyre great germ killers. Aloe vera will prevent the skin from
drying outa welcome alternative to commercial sanitizers that leave
hands parched.
Note: Even use of this all-natural solution should be limited to a few times
daily for those with sensitive skin.
Materials
1 cup (235 ml) pure aloe vera gel
1 to 2 teaspoons (15 to 28 ml) witch hazel
3 to 4 drops tea tree essential oil
3 to 4 drops peppermint essential oil
Step 1: Measure the ingredients and stir together in a mixing bowl.
Step 2: Adjust aloe vera content. To thicken the solution, add more aloe
vera gel, one teaspoon at a time.
Step 3: Package the product. Travel-size toiletry bottles are ideal for
toting this hand sanitizer. Save and clean empty bottles for re-use if you
dont want to invest in empty new ones.

Oak Processionary Moth Caterpillars
When I read about caterpillars in Inside Croydon
(http://insidecroydon.com/2014/05/02/croydon-under-threat-from-plague-of-poisonous-caterpillars/), the
post rang a bell but could not remember when I had first heard about
the issue. Then, whilst decluttering, I
came across a copy of Croydon
Guardian, 6 February 2013.
It was the usual fanfare spin from the now
ex Councils cabinet member for
highways and environmental services: the
council were to embark on a programme
to eradicate the moth for good. The work,
which was free, was taking place in
February because it was when the
caterpillars were hibernating and were
easier to contain. Obviously, the
programme did not work or was never
attempted.
Mid-May, I had noticed contractors
spraying oak trees along Wickham Road
and I immediately connected the matter
with the caterpillars. The vehicle was not
marked and they were using masks and
protective clothing. I did not take pictures
because of the double red lines.
21
I then picked up, in Mr. Patels pharmacy in Broom Road, the official
leaflet that I am reproducing . Please read Controlling OPM
carefully: affected trees are best treated during the spring and
summer when the caterpillars are about.
Did Croydon Council consult the appropriate authority before waging
war? The Council has statutory duties regarding human and animal
health and, in difficult times, needs to make proper use of finances.
I hope that the new administration will keep us better informed. SL
will ask a formal question from the Council as soon as it is practically
possible.

Pomegranates
Pomegranate juice in an
Istanbul market is one of the
most memorable experience in
my many years of travelling. It
was sharpish and refreshing.
Most of the pomegranates I ate
in the UK were tasteless or
bland until recently, probably
because they are becoming
more popular and the public
more demanding.
Punica granatum in Latin, the pomegranate is native from Iran to the
Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and naturalized over
the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. It is widely
cultivated throughout India and the drier parts of southeast Asia,
Malaya, the East Indies and tropical Africa. The tree was introduced
into California by Spanish settlers in 1769. Pomegranates prefer a
semi-arid mild-temperate to subtropical climate and are naturally
adapted to regions with cool winters and hot summers. A humid
climate adversely affects the formation of fruit. The tree can be severely
injured by temperatures below 12 F. The tree adapts well to container
culture and will sometimes fruit in a greenhouse.
One pomegranate provides about 40 percent of the daily requirement
for vitamin C and pomegranates may have anti-cancer properties.
Please refer to the following article if you wish to learn about the health
properties of this extraordinary and beautiful fruit
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/05/10/pomegra
nates.aspx
Dr. Mercola strongly suggests consuming the fruit in its whole form
because it not only will give us added fiber, but it will ensure that we
are not overdoing it on fructose, which is found in high levels in all types
of fruit juices.
If you've never eaten a pomegranate before you may be curious what
part is actually edible, and what's not. If you cut a pomegranate in half,
28
29
you'll find it's filled with juice-filled seed sacs called arils (about 600 of
them in an average pomegranate), separated by thin white (and bitter)
membranes. Arils are the jewels of the pomegranate, and they are
the part you will want to enjoy. Many people enjoy pomegranates alone
as a snack, but you can also sprinkle the arils over salads or cooked
dishes. Inside each aril is a crunchy fiber-rich seed. While some people
spit them out, you can eat them whole, seed and all. So how do you
get out the arils?
The POM Council recommends this simple three-step process:
1 Cut off the crown, then cut the pomegranate into sections
2 Place the section in a bowl of water, then roll out the arils with your
fingers (discard everything else);
3 Strain out the water, then enjoy the arils whole, seeds and all.
You do not really the bowl of water and I
suggest you can wash your hands after
eating the arils because there will be a little
stickiness. I do not fancy adding
chlorinated water to my food!
Shops are slowly beginning to
sell ready arils but you miss all
the fun. Besides, they do not taste the same: I hand-pick
my pomegranates. I bought the best from Lidl.
Ideas
Drop pomegranate seeds into champagne or sparkling wine (cider
was also suggested) for colour and flavour - and festiveness.
Serve arils with olives or sprinkle black olive
tapenade with a few arils for a tart-sweet-salty-bitter
burst of flavours and colours.
Just sprinkle arils in salads: they glisten like little
rubies and dress up any plate.
My favorite way to use pomegranates in desserts is simply to
sprinkle a few arils over ice-cream, frozen yogurt, or sorbet. I never
cook arils.

About De-cluttering
I do not live in a mansion and clutter
was an issue. According to Feng shui,
clutter is low, stagnant, blocked energy
that drains energy from you and lowers
the quality of your life.
In other words, anything that you do
not use, do not like, or do not have a
place for IS clutter. Either use it, like it,
find a place for it, or let it go.
Feng shui requires bringing beautiful, light, vibrant energy with you
when you start decluttering. Essential oils in the air, music, a water
fountain or fresh flowers are also suggested to bring vital Chi to help
eliminate the low and detrimental clutter vibes.
I started decluttering when I realised I no longer enjoyed my home. I
also realised that I had to dedicate more time to myself.
Wardrobes
I do not suffer with any serious disorder possibly associated with
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or depression for which treatment
should be sought. Why did I hoard clothes, then?
I read about the stylist Martine Alexander who regularly works with
clients to detox their wardrobes. She says there are some standard
excuses we make for hanging on to clothes: The most common
statements I get from my clients are that they bought an item in the
sales but dont know what to wear it with, that they bought something
thats too small and plan to slim into it, that they dont want to throw
something away because it was expensive or that they hope an item
will come back into fashion.
I agree with her analysis: I am guilty on all charges.
I feared making the wrong decision about what to keep and what to
throw out and, for a long time, I chose to do nothing at all until I
decided that enough was enough.
I had a history of poor shopping decisions. I used to buy on impulse,
without thinking what an item would go with or when I would wear it.
Often, I never had the right attire for the occasion.
35
Just before Christmas I stopped buying clothes. I sorted through
everything I had and arranged anything I had not worn for over a year
into piles for charity because I believe that everything should be re-
used or recycled.
My husband joined in and, in January, we sent trainers, jeans,
underwear, boxer shorts, socks, shoes, jumpers, sweatshirts, coats
and towels to the Manna Society through our church. The Manna
Society run a Day Centre for homeless people near London Bridge.
http://www.mannasociety.org.uk
We had space in the wardrobe and were happy to know we were
helping somebody. All our donations were freshly laundered, ironed
and in good condition. Anything else went into a clothes recycling
scheme. I am now going through all summer clothes and I have just
found out that they also need mugs, cereal bowls, dinner plates, more
towels (hand and bath), blankets and sleeping bags so I am
decluttering the kitchen too.

My miniscule office needed sorting out because I had mountains of
papers and could never find what I wanted. I bought a Bisley filing
cabinet for 0.99 pence on Ebay. It had no key and I had to order one
for 3.50 but is was still a bargain! I set up some simple folders. I can
now find bills and receipts without searching high and low.
Medicine and toiletries cabinet
I went through everything and removed all the outdated medicines,
the stuff I knew I would never use again, the dirty-looking bandages
and all the creams and ointments that never worked. I kept only what
could be used. I no longer buy in bulk, except toilet paper.
Books and videos
I could not part with any of my books but added tall shelves to take
advantage of every available space. I now know where everything is.
Custom shelving units provide enough space for books, photos, and
decorative pieces. We had a through room: instead of reinstating the
wall that had been removed, we created a partition wall with shelves
that housed all the videos (hundreds) and CDs. We have two rooms
now and great storage.

Kitchen
After removing all the mugs, cereal bowls and dinner plates for the
Manna Society, I went through all the pots and all the gadgets I had
bought and never used. I put them in a huge box and took them to
Oxfam. My kitchen is fit for purpose now.
Utility room
The work is still in progress but the floor is already clear of boxes. I
found a few things I had totally forgotten about and found a loving
home for them all. A new washing machine will soon replace the huge
Maytag about to die. It is now an airy room.
Under the stairs
I found a heap of carrier and paper bags, books,
magazines and empty shoe boxes. All clear now.
There is a lot of wasted space and two ancient
meters in the way. I am looking for inspiration. Any
help is welcome. I found an interesting website,
http://www.avarfurniture.co.uk, and will give them
a call next month.
The loft
The loft is boarded and half of it neatly stores all the suitcases. The
other half will be a laborious summer project.
Recommended: 30-day list
I read somewhere about creating a 30-day list: every time I want to
buy something that is not absolutely necessary, I put it on the list with
the date it was added to the list. The rule is never to buy anything
(except necessities) unless they it has been on the list for 30 days.
Often I lost the urge to buy the stuff and I saved myself a lot of money
and clutter.
We dont need to increase our goods nearly as
much as we need to scale down our wants. Not
wanting something is as good as possessing it.

Police Matters
The Promises have been updated after
the Public Meeting on Wednesday 9
April 2014 because residents expressed
concern about speeding in the Shirley
area on both sides of Wickham Road.
Shirley Life did not receive the more
up-to-date information promised. It is
disturbing to note that only crime in
Shrublands is put on record, whilst one
is aware that there was crime in other
parts of the ward.
We are surprised to note that the location of the next Public Meeting
will be All Saints Church in Bridle Road after much fuss was made
not to change the out-of-ward, previous venue. I seem to remember
that it was decided that the Panel would vote on the matter.
Public Meetings are attended by people of different faiths or none.
A neutral venue such as the Shirley Community Centre would enable
residents to feel at ease.
Many residents in the ward are not online and every effort should be
made to involve them in neighborhoods policing issues. It was
suggested that posters went up in shops and the Library.
You can contact the Team on Shirley.snt@met.police.uk.

May 1725, when the Dean
of Westminster was made
Dean of the Order in perpetuity and King Henry VII's Lady Chapel
at Westminster Abbey designated as the Chapel of the Order.
However, the Order was a revival of an older custom going back
to medieval times when part of the ceremony of knighthood
included a ritual bath symbolic of spiritual purification and a vigil
the night before receiving the honour.

The service was conducted by the Dean of Westminster, the Very
Reverend Dr John Hall.
Picture Partnership had the pleasure of being asked to cover the
Service and Ceremony of the Installation of Knights Grand Cross

READING
GROUP
FOR ADULTS
The group will discuss The Warden by Anthony Trollope on Thursday 12 June from
6 to 7pm.
"The Warden" centers on Mr. Harding, a clergyman of great personal integrity who is
nevertheless in possession of an income from a charity far in excess of the sum
devoted to the purposes of the foundation. On discovering this, young John Bold turns
his reforming zeal to exposing what he regards as an abuse of privilege, despite the
fact that he is in love with Mr. Harding's daughter Eleanor. It was a highly topical novel,
but like other great Victorian novelists, Trollope uses the specific case to explore and
illuminate the universal complexities of human motivation and social morality.
Free monthly talks fom authors or speakers
Nadeem Masood, author of Making Pandemonium, will give a talk about his
experiences as an Opening Ceremony performer and Games Maker at the London
2012 Olympics. His talk will take place on Tuesday 3 June from 2.15-3.30pm.
Please reserve your place at the library for this talk.
Caroline Smith, from Bethlem Royal Hospital's Museum, will give a talk covering
the origins of the hospital, the treatments used, some of the more notable patients
amongst other things. Her talk will be on Tuesday 24 June from 2.15-3.30pm.
Please reserve your place at the library for this talk.

Green Thumb
The awful weather we are
experiencing seems to
have come with a lot of
weeds. Green Thumb
delayed Slowmow for
some Additional Weedkill
treatment but Speedwell
and friends seem to grow
unperturbed.
Slowmow had to be

of the heavy rain. They
phoned early in the
morning to inform us. They are true professionals and pleasant too.
They even gave me a lecture on weeds but I am no gardener and like
Prunella vulgaris (Selfheal).
Shirley Open Gardens 2014
Green Thumb have generously sponsored Shirley Neighbourhood Care

The event will take place on 28 and 29 June and 6 and 7 September

public and raise funds for the charity.
