Today we will be looking at how the values and priorities of famous
public figures have a relationship to adversity and overcoming
adversity. This links to the importance of understanding what context
is when studying a text.

Definition
Adversity (n): condition marked by misfortune or distress LESSON LEARNING OBJECTIVE
To be able to recognise and discuss the importance of public life and
responsibility as part of the values and context of The Kings Speech.
TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Mark roll settling activity: TEEL puzzle.
2. 11:40 Last weeks comparison task: your turn. (20mins) Use the table, sample paragraph and notes from last lesson to write your own
paragraph response to the question:
Compare how The Kings Speech and the news article on Alex McKinnon represent adversity and overcoming adversity.
3. 12:00 Public life and adversity: some examples (30mins)
Distribute small pieces of paper with individual little stories of adversity experienced by famous people (from blog) to each students, display
the moral of these stories from the end of the blog.
Students to share their responses with the class at random; read the story and give one answer.
Students to annotate under the following headings:
Subject
- Who is the subject of the story?
Adversity
- What was the adversity experienced by the subject of the story?
Emphasis
- Circle or highlight the areas of the story that are in bold. Why did the writer emphasise these points?


Relationship to public life
- What kind of public figure is the subject or what is the public role of the subject of the story? What is the relationship between this
and the adversity they overcame?
Language Features
- Identify language features: descriptive language, first person, repetition?
Context
- What information about the context of the subject is revealed in the story? Do you know anything else?
Relationship to Bertie in The Kings Speech
- How does the adversity faced by the subject relate to the adversity faced by Bertie in The Kings Speech?
4. 12:30 Writing Task (15mins)
You are to write a paragraph on Berties story, similarly structured to these short stories. Create a catchy headline that names the
adversity he faced. Follow this with a short paragraph on what happened to him, what he did to overcome his adversity, and a bold
statement on what he could have done. End it with the line but he didnt.

CLOSURE n/a if there is spare time, give students the opportunity to do some final work on their comparison response before
handing it in for feedback. All must hand in a response!
